On a recent trip to Western Massachusetts we hit up Munich Haus in Chicopee, Massachusetts before we made our way to a hockey game in Springfield. Having been to German restaurants before, sometimes what they bring relative to the charm and ambiance causes the food to be lacking in terms of quality. But the Munich Haus is the perfect balance of both! The restaurant has a warm and cozy feel to it and the staff dons traditional German garb as they greet you at the door and serve you at the bar or at your table. The beer list contains a healthy amount of options both on draft or in a bottle ranging from some local options to a myriad of German offerings. There are familiar hefeweizens or dunkels and then some more obscure German offerings worth checking out. We started the evening with a pretzel for the table which came with a nice honey mustard. The pretzel was piping hot and fresh and was a great appetizer option. Homemade kettle chips and a dip are also provided prior to the meal. Salads were served with each meal and the salad included mixed greens, a cucumber salad, a cabbage salad and a bean salad on the plate. The French dressing was a nice accompaniment to the salad. I opted for the pretzel crusted chicken with spaetzle and butternut squash. The pretzel coating on the chicken breast was soft and the chicken was cooked perfectly. The spaetzle was cooked ideally with a little bit of crunch on some pieces from being cooked fresh before it was placed on the plate and the butternut squash was very nice. My co-diners enjoyed a weiner schnitzel with the same sides and a chicken schnitzel with hunter sauce on it with the same sides, as well. Each of us raved about the meals and this would definitely be a place to check out again! read more

Pro-tip to start off the review ... if it's the right timing, ask for the lunch menu! We walked in at 2:20 p.m. and were given a dinner menu. Later, I found out that there is a lunch menu where the entrees were basically priced at half the dinner menu. And they give you a ridiculous amount of food ... so lunch portions (and prices) would have been much more appreciated. I almost knocked one star off for not letting us choose between lunch and dinner in the late afternoon, but decided the experience was good enough not to. It's pretty amazing how much great German food there is in Western Massachusetts! My guess is these restaurants are all connected ... Student Prince, etc. but not exactly sure. The Student Prince in Springfield has been our 'go to' restaurant for German since the Hoffbrau House closed. Lately the quality of the food has slid a bit at Student Prince and parking is such a pain many times, we decided to try Munich House in the neighboring town of Chicopee. I am a sucker for vintage restaurants and 1920's - 1940's decor living in Los Angeles for much of the year. (pre-Covid) The Student Prince has the same old-timey feeling as The Smokehouse in Burbank or Musso and Frank Grill in Hollywood. The Munich Haus is newer and doesn't have the same 'old school' vibe ... but the decor is cozy and unmistakably German. Many times German restaurants can be over-the-top and make you feel like you are eating in a tacky Christmas Shoppe or inside an actual cuckoo clock. The Black Forest restaurant in NJ and Village Lanterne in Lindenhurst, NY come to mind ... all good fun, but lots of dusty bric a brack scattered throughout, fake leaves, etc. The Munich Haus feels classier ... there is not a bunch of tacky decor, although you will see the traditional stein collection and old photographs. I love how they play German beer hall songs on the speakers ... it really sets the mood and festive oompa drinking music just puts everyone in a better mood. So how is the food? We each cleaned our plates. This isn't cheap food (or beer) as a pre-warning. You get a LOT of food for the price ... it's amazing to me that someone could polish off a whole platter. I guess at $24 for sausage, schnitzel, pork chop and one other item, its a good value but what human could eat all that food and sides? The food here tastes fresh and homemade. We had the jaeger schnitzel, a giant pretzel and an order of sausage. Everything was fantastic. All the sauces and sausages are made in house. The pork schnitzel (also available in chicken ... or for a $5 upcharge, veal) was done very well. It was fried perfectly ... crispy on the outside but not chewy and tough on the inside. It was covered in a fantastic mushroom gravy (jaeger schnitzel), which tasted home made. Maybe a touch salty ... but very filling. The sausages were clearly homemade but kind of blah ... I feel like if I had to do my order again, I'd have not got sausage because it wasn't really worth $20 for sausage and I probably could have grilled them at home. The Pretzel was fantastic. You could tell it was homemade the way German pretzels should be. Many places just use dough ... or worse yet, have pre-made pretzels. Not here. The sauces were a bit bland. There was honey mustard and some sort of a herb butter or mild cheese dip. Melted cheese dip might have been better ... this was the spreadable kind. Each table gets an order of fresh made potato chips (not french fries), which are addictive. The beer list was interesting ... 16 German beers on draft! Many of the choices were from great breweries ... but not exactly the best beers that they offer. Maybe hard to get on draft, so they offer the second tier? There is a sampler with SIX 4 oz. pours ... or you can get a small beer or a larger beer. (go with the large!) At $6 - $8 per beer, the prices weren't bad ... even though the beer prices aren't listed on the menu, which can get scary. They also have a great selection of German Schnapps if you really want to get buzzed fast. Schnapps always does the trick! Our waitress was nice and very competent. One of the best waitresses we've had ... not obtrusive but there when you needed her. Good menu suggestions and descriptions from her as well. If not for giving us the dinner menu in the late afternoon, she'd have been perfect! The bar area with it's high booths is where we preferred to sit. The side rooms are nice but lacked ambiance, in our opinion. They also have a patio seating outdoor and a 'beer hall' seating section under a tent in the back. Overall ... great food, huge portions, a bit pricey, big beer selection, good service and the value was good for what we paid. We will certainly come back. It doesn't have that old timey feel the Student Prince has but parking is easier than Springfield (although the lot here is small, so you may need to street park) and we felt the food quality was better at Munich Haus. read more

One trip to Munich Haus and it immediately hopped to one of my top 3 restaurants in the area. The second you walk in... You are leaving the United States and entering a Bavarian Bar in a countryside village of Germany. I loved that they offered samplers so that we could try more of their stuff. Ended up having the beer sampler, app sampler (almost all fried food - wish there was a couple non-fried items on it), and the Schnitzel sampler which was DELICIOUS. I'm angry because now it will be difficult to decide between the Schnitzel sampler and trying something new.. I loved all the decorations and staff. This is my favorite German restaurant. I started going to this place for their game feast. Every year they conduct 3 or 4 game feasts. You get to try a lot of different kinds of meat like Kangaroo, Venison (deer), alligator, rabbit, wild turkey, rabbit, giant squid, bison, elk, llama etc. This is an all you can eat buffet. There is dessert station as well. You can buy beer if you like. They conduct this in a big banquet hall, with live music. It is a fun event. I also attended their octoberfest dinner which is done once a year in the same banquet hall. There is a german food buffet, one free beer, german music and a lot of fun. When you go for al a carte, first you will be given a chips and a beer cheese sought of sauce. Chips is really crispy and sauce is good. I went for the Munich sampler for appetizer. Potato pancake was good. Pierogi was filled with creamy cheese which was nice. Fried cheese was also soft cheese. Generally I don't like pickles, and fried pickles was alright. Mushroom with crab stuffing had a very fishy taste. Not everyone will like it. Nurnberger sausage was good. For entree I went for Schnitzel. It had Jager, Rahm and paprika schnitzels. I was expecting paprika schnitzel to be spicy, but I didn't feel any spiciness. All 3 were equally good. If you don't like pork, you can change it to veal schnitzels for an upcharge ($5). I am pleasantly surprised by the fact that they have alligator, kangaroo and venison (deer) in their regular menu. They have a nice selection of beers. Most of them (or may be all of them) are top German beers. Each beer comes in its own specialized glass designed by the corresponding brewery. That is an amazing perfectionism I loved in them. My absolute favorite beer is Franziskaner. After that Erdinger is my favorite. Both are Weissbiers. This seems to be a very popular place. There is a small parking lot on the side of the restaurant. dishonest restaurant. Most restaurants have free refill if you ordered a soft drink (or iced tea). This restaurant charges you $2.50 per cup. That's fine. Most restaurants would let you know in advance if you ordered a refill that is not free, this restaurant would not tell you a thing. They just charged you quietly. When I confronted the waitress for this ridiculous practice, her answer just blew me away: we normally don't tell customers this. Their food is tasteless and dry. Maybe that's the reason they need to make the extra income by charging you quietly for refills. read more

We came here last night (Sunday). Beauitful Christmas decorations and live music! German food + beer available. I got raddler which is beer/sprite with Jager Schnitzel (which included a soup). The soup was something w/ chicken & paprika.. whatever it was.. It was good! I recommend adding more water to the jager sauce as it was pretty thick. Otherwise it was still very delicious. It's so much food so I ended up taking home left overs. I couldn't even finish the beer. I was struggling walking out of there I was so full. Service was good. Nothing special but wasn't bad either! We got two huge plates of schnitzel potatoes w/ soup + 2 beer and paid $58 not including tip. I thought that was great compared to some other restaurant prices! I would definitely go back. For a taste of old world Bavaria this is the place! Rouladen, schnitzel, spaetzel, sauerkraut were very good. The dinner salad was an interestingly delicious combo of three bean , lettuce and cabbage slaw. Nice selection of German beers on tap and in bottles. German beer is my favorite! The good the salad is outstanding, very good coffee, and the German style chips for munching on the table are a nice touch. The no so hot. The fish was cold, the mashed potatoes were barely tepid and the in-season veggies were under cooked and barely warm. An excellent dining experience... Five of us met for dinner and had a wonderful meal. My kids and I all had the Wiener Schnitzel and others had the Shrimp. My brother commented on the fact that the meals were served piping hot... one of his usual complaints about other restaurants whose foods sit under a heat lamp and cool off (and dry out). Our server, Brittany, was attentive, friendly and informative. If one of my businesses required someone who could multitask and deal with customers with a smile, I'd hire her in a heartbeat. While a little pricier because we upgraded our soups (we're not salad people and my kids and I don't do Clam Chowder, the soup of the day) it was terrific. read more

I go every year for their game dinners, and they are absolutely fantastic! The service is prompt, and the banquet hall is beautiful and well-organized for such a large event. There are a lot of options to choose from at the game dinners, and the meats are cooked to perfection. They also have a nice carving station which consists of kangaroo, bison, venison and elk. Also, their coffee is excellent and I would love to know what brand they use! read more

I had visited Munich Haus some years back and recall finding the dining experience decent but far from stellar. Today, I am pleased to say this is one of the best German restaurants in New England. The beer selection pairs wonderfully with the cuisine offered, especially the Spaten Oktoberfest, Weihenstephaner Kristallweissbier and Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier. The appetizers are generous and plentiful, especially the sausage platter. The sides are as generous as they are delicious with the buttery, crispy spätzle, the sweet red cabbage and sweet'n'sour sauerkraut. There is not one dish I wouldn't recommend, but for me, the star item on the menu is their famous Zigeuner Schnitzel. The rich and intensely flavorful sauce is the boss. Never had German food before and this place served a delicious meal! The potato crisps with horseradish dip to start was phenomenal, the pretzel crusted chicken meal was delightful! Next time definitely trying the Schnitzel because my boyfriends meal looked phenomenal! They stick to true German style lagers and love that they added a few local beers as well!!! The Munich Haus is conveniently located between Springfield and Holyoke. We did not plan to eat there but Judd's restaurant offering Czech-American cuisine that appeared dark and closed made is look for alternative. After disappointment with visiting restaurant that possibly offers czech meals, we tried restaurant offering german meals. Munich Haus is spacious, gorgeous looking restaurant, with additional outdoor seating and tent bar with heating. Following the German tradition, they have tons of beers to pick from and also non-beer-drinkers can satisfy their thirst without being judged. Service was really friendly and patient. After settling on the bar, we received complimentary house made potato chips that was crispy and well seasoned. We ordered fried camembert cheese which tasted great and potato pancakes which were not so good for me as a person who grew up with these being made certain way. My boyfriend born and raised in the United States enjoyed both (new meals to him) fully! Then we shared one of two vegetarian options meal - Beyond meat sausages with red cabbage and traditional spatzle. Several years after my first review, we are still making the trek to Munich Haus when we have a craving for German food. After trying most of the schnitzels we have settled on our favs - chicken, jager and the berliner. They give you plenty of meat combined with two sides. With the dinner portions it's at least two meals for me. For the sides I like both the red cabbage, sauerkraut and spatzle (still) but I'd have to say the salad is a surprising treat. The combination of the dressing, chickpeas and pickled cucumber is amazing. Occasionally I also order the potato pancakes which, when paired with apple sauce, is quite tasty. My children love the homemade chips and the dip, particularly the dip. We are always asking for seconds and even took a cup to go! While it's a drive for us we definitely will be going back over and over again! read more

Hands down this is the best restaurant I've been to in Chicopee...yet. My colleagues and I arrived around 6:30 on a Thursday night and were told there was an hour wait...on a Thursday night...that's how good it is. We were able to sit at the bar and order much sooner. We started with the appetizer sampler and we ate it too fast for me to get a picture of everything. It was delicious! Next we each had a salad with our meals. They were very tasty. I ordered chicken schnitzel and had mashed potatoes and butternut squash with mine. SO GOOD! This is the best German food I've had. Did I mention how great the appetizer sampler was;) The beer tap was directly in front of us. Needless to say, they could have left the taps running because the bartenders were nonstop pouring beers. The waitstaff was very friendly and helpful with ordering. It's also Christmas time and the restaurant was decorated so nicely. Whenever I come into town this is one of my favorite spots to dine. The side salad that comes with the meals is mixed greens, 5 bean salad, sliced cucumbers in a sauce, and shredded red cabbage. Best sow salad I have ever had. This establishment makes homemade potato chips with a dipping sauce, so good. I usually get the Scallop dinner with these little pasta balls. They offer a unique variety of foods, plenty of German plates as well as fish, veal, pork. The dining room is a bit loud so we sit in a booth at the bar. On Saturday they have a accordion player who travels around the restaurant to great every table. The servers here wear German outfits, great touch. I was surprised to see that so many servers had tattoos as well as bartender. I don't care if people have tattoos but it took away from the feel of environment. French onion soup snockingly awful--Used chicken broth and barely melted (not broiled) cheese over soggy bread. Rice was undercooked, seasonal veggies raw. We dined here on May 5, 2016. What a complete letdown!!! The atmosphere is in need of sprucing up. I was facing a mirror on the wall that was coated in dust. It was a Friday night and it was fairly empty. The presentation of all the food was poor. We started out with drinks. My husband had a beer and I ordered the blood orange Cosmo. I thought it would be a blood orange color but it was bright yellow. I asked if this was the right drink and our server said yes but thought was a strange color too. She didn't know what was in the drink because she had just come back after a long absence and wasn't up on some of the new items. Say what?? It tasted okay so I didn't want to bother sending it back. Appetizers: We got the Munich Sampler and the frog legs for appetizers. My daughter loved the frogs legs and ate the entire dish. The Munich Sampler was disgusting! The potato pancakes were greasy and dark brown. Most pierogies I've had are boiled then crisped up but the ones in the sampler were like empanadas. Most everything else was lukewarm so we gave up eating the rest. Oh and they give you only 1 shrimp. Soup and Salad: My husband said the French onion soup was okay...not great and not terrible. I got the salad with the "special" Roquefort dressing that is supposedly so good, they charge you almost $2.00 for it. Our server came out with a "salmon colored" dressing in a bowl with a hunk of Roquefort cheese in it. She then crushed up the cheese with a fork and mixed it. I guess I was supposed to be wowed by this display. Now for the taste....it tasted like bottled French/Thousand Island dressing, which was very sweet, with chunks of Roquefort cheese. It actually tasted like it has sweet gherkins in it. I couldn't eat it. My daughter got the Caesar salad which was good. Main Meals: My husband go the Wiener Schnitzel. The breading was too thick, mushy, plus the veal was pounded too thin. He ended up scraping the breading off one side, leaving it on the other. The spaetzle was greasy. My daughter had the Chicken Riesling. Same thing, too much breading. The sauce had a tiny hint of wine in it but it was cold and coagulated and tasted more like a basic roux/white sauce. I had the "Famous Sauerbraten". It says braised on the menu but it was 4 slices of overdone, tough roast beef that was covered in Sauerbraten gravy. Braised meat usually is fall-apart tender. The mashed potatoes that came with it were underseasoned and almost cold. Nothing came out piping hot except for maybe the French onion soup. We will never come back here and I very rarely say that. I dined at Munich Haus this past Sunday evening. It was a very discouraging experience. We started with thev Fried Cheese Appetizer and sadly it had a hint of fish flavor! I don't know but it must have been fried in the oil for fish? Both of us had the Weiner Schnitzel with Spaetzle and Cabbage. I dined with a friend and was raving about the Veal Schnitzel and Spaetzle. The Veal had a greasy flavor and the spaetzle was very dry, chewy and unflavorful. UNFORTUNEATELY, , I ordered a Weiner Schnitzel Dinner and Apple Strudel to go to take home to my Mother when I placed my Dinner order. The To Go dinner was equally very dissapointing! And, the Strudel pastry was soggy with a watery apple filling that had been sitting too long and should never have been offered. On a positive note the Tossed Salad with delicious Roquefort Dressing was excellent. It had a variety of crisp greens with Chick Peas, Red Beans and marinated Cucumbers. The Server was pleasant but, disinterested. I have dined at Munich Haus many times over the years and I often would pick up To Go on my way home from work. I hope this was just an off night for the Munich Haus but, frankly it will be long time before I return. The pricing is average for fine dining but, this was far from a fine dining experience. We go out at least two nights a week and thankfully we have a variety of local fine dining restaurants to go into our rotation. The Munich Haus was not a good experience. read more
