There are so many sushi restaurants in LA; most of them are quite similar - they offer similar rolls and run of the mill Japanese food. I like Murakami for two things : their yellowtail collar is excellent!! Not only was it done well, at a little over $20(at this writing) it was a fantastic deal! I also like their ChiRashi bowls - the fact that you can choose the fish and make your own combination is very nice. I have not seen it in any other restaurants. Service was super tentative and friendly. We had to wait a while for our food to come, but it was a weekend night so that's understandable. The ambience is casual and relaxing, kind of like a neighborhood eatery. Parking can be super difficult in this area. I recommend going north of Melrose and try to find spots in the residential area. But make sure you read the signs! read more

After 7 years of coming here, I'm done. Quality has gone downhill fish isn't as fresh, portions are smaller, and prices keep going up. Tonight sealed it. The place was nearly empty, yet service was slow. My 'Rich Man's Roll' tasted fishy, sashimi was bland, and I actually had to ask for salt at a sushi restaurant. Then a waiter placed a dirty napkin directly on my dish while I was eating and accused me of throwing it at him when I removed it. Completely false and unacceptable. What's worse is the manager/owner, who has spent years greeting me with hugs and asking about my son, suddenly couldn't be bothered. She sat at the bar eating, didn't come over, and I had to track her down myself only to be told she'd "check the camera." That's when it clicked the friendly relationship was completely phony. When it actually mattered, there was no accountability or care. Plenty of better sushi spots out there. Don't waste your time or money here. read more

The food was totally good -- not amazing, but good. The service and staff were excellent -- friendly, present, personable. And the fact that dogs are allowed on the patio was a huge plus. It's hard for a sushi place to really stick out, and that's why I gave Murakami only four stars -- it really felt similar to lots of other Japanese places in the neighborhood, and not better (or worse) than most of the rest of them. Got the build your own bowl with salmon, spicy salmon, imitation crab, and eel! Food was delicious and the service was very kind. Got seated at 8PM very quickly and the food came out fast. Loved the music and ambiance of the environment. read more

This is one of my favorite Japanese nigiri and sashimi restaurants in Los Angeles. A great Melrose desitnation for authentic quality Japanese food. The fish is always fresh. Tomoko is one of the coolest waitresses and hostesses! She greets regulars with so much enthusiasm and joy. There's a small outdoor seating they we've dined at when we have our pups. Inside is intmate and cozy. And of course there's bar seating. Street parking isn't too difficult and I think there's valet parking on the weekends. read more

Great place for lunch. Came sunday on opening and there was no wait. Parallel parking available in the side streets. Food here was a great deal. 20$ for soba and a mini chirashi bowl. For two people the total came out to under 60$ for lunch specials. Portion sizes were just enough. read more

Great find on YELP! My sister and I were looking for a spot on Melrose, and so glad she found this one. So many selections and specials to choose from - great prices, good portions - everything was delicious! Sashimi combo was so fresh and came with miso soup, salad, and rice. The Japanese breakfast special had several options - Japanese omelet, spinach, fried collar, pickled veggies rice, salad, miso soup, and agedashi tofu. (My sister just got back from Japan and said the Breakfast was authentic and just like how they served it over there.) This quaint sushi spot is incredible. You can taste the freshness of the food. We found a parking spot a short walk away. When we entered, we were greeted and seated promptly. We always start with some cold filtered sake and nigiri. Off to a great start. Very large pieces of fish on the nigiri. We ordered several rolls including the Omg. Red Dragon, Dragon, Snowman, Typhoon and Caterpillar. I don't know which was the best. Seriously, they were all that good. We finished with some baked green mussels. Yummy! Food: 3.5/5 Service: 3.5/5 Ambiance: 3/5 We got the sashimi omakase and the cuts were yummy but soo thin and tiny. I think it was like half or a third of the normal size sashimi's I'm used to. If you are used to paying a fixed price, beware if you order "omakase" which quite literally means you trust the chef, you are in their graces to receive the best cuts at the price the chef sets. You might be surprised at the bill if it's much more than you planned for, but you also risk being pleasantly surprised by the cuts, so it's definitely a win-win for some! I knew what I didn't like, so I told the head chef (Taro) in advance and he accommodated for my preferences :) Parking situation is quite tough--you can either find street parking a few blocks down or just do valet next door for $7! All in all, the omakase was delicious indeed, though the price was quite steep. We were soo hungry afterwards that we had a second meal elsewhere but I certainly do not regret coming here! read more

Really fresh sushi. I got the $65 omakase and each bite was amazing, especially Otoro and Uni. Would recommend for Omakase. It's located on Melrose Ave in a quaint, unassuming Japanese restaurant. Took me back to the local restaurants in Japan. The sushi chefs were so friendly and I loved conversing with them and their love for food. They loved seeing our reactions to the nigiris. They even gave us free octopus at the end! Watched the Dodgers win a spot to World Series with them so the restaurant was in a great mood. Great people and great vibes! read more

Well, I firmly believe it's the GOAT of Chirashi bowls in LA. When I first started coming here, (maybe 2012?) it was $24.75 for a 7 item bowl. Now it's $36 for 8 items. It's still great. They have kept their commitment to quality. Good service too. This is the only thing place I order Scallops with Masago. At other places, it's a cheap dish, here, it's fresh tasting. Way more filling than expected. Actually pretty solid. Tried the salmon and yellowtail nigiri too, decent, fresh, did the job. The only real miss was the crispy rice. Stale. In New York, that's basically a crime. Not sure how you mess up the one thing that's supposed to be crispy. Still, overall, good experience.
