I was with a friend on a Saturday evening and she had heard about this place near her apt. We called ahead of time to see what the wait was like, and they told us to come in. I'm so glad we did! We started with some miso soup, which came in cute mugs. We were waiting for a long time for the entrees, but they served us some soybeans on the house to tide us over. So nice! We both got the rice bowls. I had the spicy tuna (double), avocado and seaweed salad. It was great. Fish was fresh and the sushi rice was tasty. The fish has quality, it tastes fresh and the cuts are fat free and tender. 2. Great prices for what you are eating. I definitely recommend the bowl! 3. Service is friendly and efficient. To paraphrase the late Steve Jobs, simplicity is the ultimate sophistication. I can't help but imagine Mr. Jobs would have appreciated Murakami Sushi. Murakami occupies a wholly unassuming Melrose storefront. The staff are all quiet, self assured pros. My lunch companion and I gave the chef/owner, Mr. Murakami his head. Mr. Murakami, in turn, set before us, wave after wave of nigiri: albacore, monk fish liver, salmon, Spanish mackerel, scallop, eel, mackerel and snapper. One piece more perfect and surprising than the next. Each piece singularly and memorably crafted. And not just sushi. Our meal was bracketed by oyster shots and a course of soft shell crab. Both elegantly served and outstandingly delicious. The preparation of all, was artful, clean and without needless fuss or ado. Completely and thankfully absent from my Murakami experience was attitude and showmanship. Just a self contained artist doing what he does. Mr. Murakami is an understated master who lets his food do the talking. You should meet Mr. Murakami. Do it soon. read more

SO FRESH!! Not only did we walk in 30 minutes before closing, and the staff were so welcoming, but the quality of the food was supreme. Salmon skin maki was unlike I've had before- loaded with veggies that complimented the salmon skin but did not overpower the crunch goodness whatsoever. Since my friend introduced me to this place, I've been three times in two weeks, brought new people here, and plan on returning weekly. I found absolutely everything enjoyable- The portion size vs price is outstanding... The service staff and the sushi chefs are incredibly friendly, polite and accommodating (I brought a picky friend that wanted to sub out everything)... The sushi is top grade. Nothing is "fishy", the tuna isn't "stringy", the wasabi and ginger are fresh and abundant... The place is cute inside and isn't too busy if you go for lunch between 12-2... So, so good! read more

Just finished a wonderful meal here at Murakami. We called and made a reservation for 815 and to our delight a single table was ready in a very busy restaurant with all the other tables taken. Our order was promptly taken by Eddie and Tomoko and although the food did take a little longer than expected, they gave us free edamame to hold us in. Walked in at 5:30pm to a completely empty restaurant. My boyfriend and I were seated quickly and our orders were taken care of right away. My boyfriend ordered the most expensive chirashi bowl option with the fish already chosen for you. On the other hand, I opted for the "make your own" chirashi with 5 options. I chose tuna, salmon, ikura, aji, and uni (extra charge). Sadly there was no aji so I substituted it for red snapper which was delicious so I enjoyed it regardless. I requested the garlic soy sauce on the side and while delicious, the taste can be too strong for some of the delicate fish so be careful with it. Murakami gets 4 stars from me because it was just okay. It'd been on my bucketlist for the longest, but sadly the food was quite mediocre. There are definitely better chirashi bowls out there :( read more

MY ALL TIME FAVORITE SUSHI SPOT IN LA. Ask for the garlic soy sauce (unless you're on a date lol trust me) I'm not sure what else to say besides this place is awesome. The fish is always fresh, the service is amazing, and the prices are as fair as they could be. I always make my own chirashi bowl and add uni if I'm feeling extra , it's usually under $25 and I'm always satisfied. I've been a customer since wilcox and they're always consistent. It's a well-loved spot for lovers of chirashi, which is a bowl of sushi rice (so it's seasoned with salt, a little sugar, and vinegar) with whatever sashimi that suits you. They have a variety of chirashi bowl dishes you can choose, or build your own, by choosing however many types of fish or toppings you want. This is NOT poke'. It's chirashi. We did a make your own bowl option and ordered two cut rolls as well (my boyfriend can take in a lot of sushi). No complaints. Fish was fresh and the garlic soy sauce did NOT disappoint! Only thing I might add if I'm being a Debbie downer is this: we were seated at the bar and did not see our server after the first initial order.. sadly no refills on green tea or sake were to be had. NEVER. AGAIN. I had been coming here for YEARS and ordering about once a week until the woman who claims to be the owner was so insanely rude to me I promised her I would not only make sure it was known on every review platform possible but would never eat there again. I spend hundreds if not a few thousand on sushi a year and the treatment I received was just atrocious. The previous TWO times I had ordered from them they had messed up my order so when I called and finished placing my order I asked her to please double check the order before they bagged it up. The whole time on the phone it was extremely loud in the background and she was acknowledging other people while attempting to take my order. When she read the order back to me it was wrong. I was attempting to correct her and tell her to please double check the order when they bag it and started to speak louder so she could hear me when she all of a sudden became very defensive and yelled "you're yelling at me and I don't deserve this" and hung up. Mind you it was her talking to other people the whole time, not getting my order right the last two times in a row, and telling me she couldn't hear me. I attempted to call back to which she hung up on me twice. The third time I asked to speak to the owner to which she claimed she was. I explained how often I eat there and how appalled I was that this is how she treats customer to which she laughed at me. I was so furious I hung up. This sushi is too expensive for their staff, regardless of if it is an owner or not, to be this insanely rude to loyal customer who was simply trying to make sure her order was right because it was wrong the previous two times and was also read back wrong. I have found way better sushi places where you get more bang for your buck since this incident and they are all super welcoming as well as consistently correct with my order. Crazy rockin at Santa Monica and la brea Studio sushi in studio city (well with it) Niko Niko at la cienega and Santa Monica. No one deserves that stress when paying good money for food and attempting to place a simple order. Shame on you Murakami! read more

Fast friendly service and fresh fish. I came here for a casual dinner with my bf and we parked on the street. They have all the offerings of a typical sushi restaurant, and everything was delicious. Found this spot on Yelp after I found out the other spot I was going to go to was closed. Saw lots of good reviews, so thought I'd check it out. I was greeted immediately and taken to a table. The place is relatively small, but even with the tables eventually filling up, it didn't feel crowded. While waiting for my friend I got lots of attention from the wait staff to make sure I had something to drink and was taken care of. My friend and I ordered the garlic edamame and crispy rice with spicy tuna as appetizers and they were SO tasty!!! We both ordered Chirashi bowls. The bowls seem to give you more bang for your buck. She customized hers and I got the number 5. The fish was fresh and melted in your mouth. I recommend this place and will definitely be coming back. read more

The service was fine, no complaints there but the food was just... not good. The fish tasted and felt cheap. I couldn't bite through the salmon sushi. I just left it on the plate.
