Okay, you know about their great corned beef, shepherds pie and their libations. I'd like to comment on their festive decorations. Exquisitely done. From the dining table, walls and chandeliers. Little leprechens and green beads. Fun. I adore their fabric booth seats. They still feel new and clean. I'm not a fan of sticky, plastic, cut-up and worn out plastic booth seats. We popped in on Tuesday to take an Irish-Amrtican friend to dinner to thank him for some recent kindnesses. It was a public holiday (Kuhio Day) so it wasn't busy. We do hope that people will dine there--it's great. I had the cornbeef and cbbage which I've had every time I've been there, my wife had Irish dip she said was excellent, and our friend enjoyed the fish and chips. The calamari starter with cocktail suace was excellent and between us we had 5 glasses of Smithwick's red Irish ale (remember not to pronounce the "w" in Smithwick!). Such a nice place, cheerful atmosphere and easy to park at the city lot kitty corner. During the pandemic we tried to support them by doing curbside pick up every now and then. Our UBER driver recommended this place....and it was a great find for vacationers in Honolulu looking for a non-touristy place to relax and have a great meal. FIRST....THE FUN PART.....when walking here we turned the corner and they were filming the TV show MAGNUM PI! Murphy's is that downtown institution that you have bound to have a casual business lunch at, or perhaps stopped by after work for pau hana with colleagues, or maybe you went to one of their famous block parties.They have been around for a long time and for good reason, they do what they do and they do it well. Serve up some great dishes and with fun and stellar service. The menu is straight-forward and features a pretty wide array of items for the most pickiest of eaters. You won't be disappointed. But you come here for a few of their main items that stand out: the Blarney Burger is pretty stellar with a moist burger patty set between cheddar and Guiness cheeses. The Shepherd's Pie is my go-to and they definitely make the best on the island with ground lamb and vegetables topped with a smooth mashed potatoes and charred to beautiful perfection. For a heavier meal, the Irish Dip is a treat with sliced sirloin set in a baguette and added heat from the horseradish mayo and a nice briny-flavor from the Guinness au jus, don't worry....it's not enough to get drunk at over lunch. First time coming to Murphy's to Dine In and it was an awesome experience. At first service was very slow. There was literally nobody in here and it took us a while to get our orders taken. But once it was taken, everything was all gravy. Husband and I started with our drinks. I got my favorite beer Fresh Squeezed IPA by Deschutes and he got the Red Zeppelin IPA by Aloha Beer Company. Also a round of well tequila and Jameson. I ordered their half portion of fried spicy chicken wings. Comes with ranch. It is soooo tasty. Incredibly crunchy and flavorful. I loved it. My husband got their corned beef and cabbage. The corned beef was super juicy and not dry or tough. Steamed vegetables were delicious, as well as the mashed potatoes. My husband and I were recently in Oahu and this was one of the places he had to try. He saw it on the travel channel or cooking channel (not sure). We got there at approximately 8:58 and they were closing the kitchen for the night. They were so inviting and asked the cooks if they would make us something and they agreed. It was so nice on the outside and inside. The dining area is really clean and made me feel warm and safe. The staff was very friendly. The bar itself, reminded me of a pub in Ireland with the decor, so of course I loved that. We had Smithwick's which we have trouble finding, so yay. We went out late on a Sunday, so probably poor choice on our part, as the area is a little unfortunate. To be honest, I wasn't sure that I wanted to get off the bus. Most of the surrounding area is boarded up. I am not sure if its due to businesses closed down or protecting them from the immense amount of transients in the surrounding areas. Sorry for all that, because honestly, it was worth the trek. I almost gave it a 4 star because of the surrounding area, but the treatment we received was worth a 5. I've been meaning to write a review for this spot. The hubs and I went here for a quick lunch. We were greeted by a waitress who immediately seated us with a couple menus. I eagerly perused my choices and my eye stopped short at a crab,shrimp and cheese sandwich on sourdough. That is my favorite kind of bread. I usually opt for a side of fries, but this time egg salad was my choice. The hubs ordered shepherds pie with a side of greens. He enjoyed it and shared some with me. My first bite of the sandwich was ok. I was wondering if this was supposed to be a seafood melt. It tasted lukewarm, the flavors of the shrimp and crab were a bit bland. Love this place. For dinner we always try to come on weekdays when it's a-little slower. Friday's is a madhouse, which is great for business, but I would recommend reservations. We always park at the Marin Tower municipal parking on Smith Street and walk down Marin Street to Murphy's. Nothing beats the Guinness pour and Irish whisky selection , but if your with family for dinner we always like the Irish Prime Rib sando, Open Face Turkey sando with extra gravy, Shepard's Pie, Fish and Chips and Gaelic Steak. Try to get one of the home made pies on Friday or if they make it during the weak days, but the key lime pie is always great. Enjoy yourselves. Called in to make reservations for lunch. Ambience was semi dark, aircon was really nice, since it was splurging hot outside. Really clean and doesn't look like a bar. Looks more like fine dining to me. I would love to make this a normal getaway from work lunch place to dine in. Host was fast to greet and took us to our reserved table. A lot of workers come for lunch here. I did not want to eat big so I got the Murphy's club and my friend got the chicken with side order rice. The club came with either slaw or fries. I get a lot of out-of-town friends visit me year-round. They don't like to do the typical tourist things or go to places other tourists go to. Of all the places I took them to, Murphy's consistently gets high praises. Not just them; I don't take them to places that I don't go myself! Murphy's is located on Merchant Street, close to Nimitz Highway. There's a municipal parking lot just across the street, but it's not cheap. It'll cost you 10 bucks, and it only accepts credit cards. If you're lucky, you might be able to find metered parking nearby. Head towards the building with the green awning over the doorway. The second you step into through the door, you're transported to some pub in Dublin! (I've never been there, but I imagine that's what a pub in Dublin would look like!) The restaurant is in front and the bar is behind. The staff is always smiling and polite, quickly ushering us to our seats. They have a lot of beer on tap, and being an Irish bar / restaurant, they are expected to have Guiness, which they do. I unfortunately am the driver so I never get to drink...(Well, I don't drink anyways. Maybe once or twice a year.) My favorite pupu off the menu is the Potato Skins. quartered potatoes with bacon and chives smothered with cheddar and baked... I highly recommend it, but be careful: they don't serve it on Sundays! Choosing the main dish is a problem. THEY'RE ALL GOOD! My top three choices would be: Corned Beef Cabbage (of course!) Gaelic Steak (New York steak with green peppercorn and brown gravy) and the Shepherd's Pot Pie. (Lamb Stew covered with mashed potatoes and baked) The shepherd's pie is my favorite. Lamb usually has a gamey taste but not this one! Tender cubes of lamb meat with onions, carrots and celery, simmered in what I believe is a red wine gravy. The stew is then covered with mashed potato and baked, which gives it a slight and very subtle crust, which adds a delightful texture. You're probably going to be stuffed by the time you finish your main dish. But you've come this far... You can't leave without having their famous bread pudding! It's a block of bread crust and raisins, cubed and fused together with a towering crown of whipped cream. This is all drenched with a whiskey cream sauce. Like I stated earlier, I don't usually drink alcohol. But I didn't say I don't like alcohol! I love the flavor of that Irish whiskey! Once you dig in, you can't stop! Your meal at Murphy's isn't complete without their bread pudding. Oh, there are other desserts on the menu, but this is what I feel differentiates Murphy's from other restaurants. Are you a fan of YuMmY fresh corned beef and cabbage? Well that's what my review is all about! :D This is a well-known bar and grill smack dab in the middle of Chinatown a bit on the outskirts nearer the ocean (pier). It's a short way across the street but is very nearby Aloha Tower (also at the pier) too. Find parking along the street (after hours right in front), in one of the nearby municipal parking lots (for nominal fee - be aware they close at 12am), or at the kitty corner parking lot (for fee). Outside looks like an old-fashioned perhaps Irish restaurant. Inside, think dark green, dark wood, off-white walls. The lighting is on the dim side but in no ways dark just not blazing stark bright white. There are wooden tables chairs and booths in the main dining area. The pub part is quite a bit darker and seems hidden inside on the inside right side lol. Inside is quite large and larger once you realize that the pub part is on the other side of the restaurant. It's not a new looking place but it is comfy. There are multiple big screen TVs all around but more like here and there. There is a back room which is an elevated area that has one large table in the lower section and a bunch of tables that can be put together in the upper area, or the upper area which also contains booths along the walls plus the lower area can also seat a large-sized group all together. The large table only works where it is; the pillars which separate the two sections prevent the tables in the two sections from being put all together. Hard to explain but if you see the spacing, you'll understand what I mean. Hope that helps your coordination efforts to gather a group here. Service is good and friendly. If you need anything and they're super busy (which they do get bc it's a really popular place), then just go up to the waitstaff and ask for what you need. They're genuinely good ppl here. During St. Patrick's celebrations, Mr. Murphy holds a block party! He is also a huge University of Hawaii (UH) Football fan and supporter and holds an annual fundraising block party (such as the pigs skin pigout) for the team! They've got a large selection of beers and an extensive menu with nice yummy selections. According to Murphy's Law: "Anything that can go wrong will go wrong". Recently, I was invited by a friend to join himself and his co-workers for drinks after work at Murphy's. Of course, accepting the invite was a no-brainer for me since I was still on vacation, but at the same time though I had heard of Murphy's I myself had never been there before. I asked my friend for directions and where to park, and thanks to yelp I was also provided with their address and website. As I was driving, I was skeptical whether I would get lost or not, and thankfully I was not affected by Murphy's Law as I found Murphy's Bar without great difficulty. I have to admit I wasn't sure what to expect walking into Murphy's, but I was pleasantly surprised by its welcoming atmosphere, delicious food, and terrific customer service. I was part of a group of 6, and we were grateful to have a bar table to ourselves amongst the after work crowd. PARKING: There is street parking OR there is a pay lot that is located diagonally across from the bar. If you choose the pay lot, select the "evening" pay option priced at $5, that way you won't have to worry about paying hourly. Also, make sure to place your ticket on your dashboard before leaving your car. FOOD: 1) Irish Dip (thin slices of sirloin on a baguette with horseradish mayonnaise, served with Guinness au gus): One of my favorite dishes of the evening! I think it's the dip that makes the sandwich a true winner in taste and satisfaction. Give it a try! 2) Salmon Pate with minced onions, capers, and sour cream with toasted rounds: Every person I was with had tried this on a previous visit, and I received some very rapid encouragement by all to try it. This was quite good! I enjoyed it very much and would definitely recommend this dish. 3) Fried spicy wings with ranch dressing: Believe it or not we ordered 2 of these! They were not too spicy in my opinion and the side of ranch dressing is very generous as well. 4) Basket of fries: Served hot and crispy, just the way french fries should be served. SERVICE: Terrific! The main bartender and his helpers were very friendly, polite, outgoing, and humorous. They were very approachable and easy to speak with despite the crowded bar that evening. NOTE: Orders for drinks and food must be placed with the bartender. There is no server/waitress walking around taking orders. NEXT VISIT: I wouldn't mind trying their corned beef and cabbage. For the Downtown/China Town area, there really is not better restaurant or drinking hole! Murphy's has been around for a long time, has a prominent location off of Merchant Street, and has some awesome, old town New York style architecture and décor. Ah, but it's the food and drink that drive traffic to Murphy's. You must make a lunch-time reservation or you may stand around watching everyone else eat for up to 60-minutes. They have a great selection of booths or stand-alone tables in essentially three separate rooms. The ambiance is rustic, the food is too in many ways, and the service as always been top-shelf. I went there recently with a few of by Bank friends for after work drinks and pupus. Their Happy Hour prices were very reasonable, and the crowds relatively young and hip. Murphy's has a special place in my heart because of their willingness to help others. When Aloha Airlines closed, me and my many friends that suddenly lost our careers were hosted by Murphy's for an outdoor street festival and fundraiser. This place is good for good, old fashioned Irish Food. We got the Shepard's Pie, Meat Loaf, and Macadamia Nut Pie. The shepard's pie was really good. The mashed potatoes were cooked perfectly and were whipped well. The lamb was tender and the broth was very flavorful. Everything just worked well with this dish. The meat loaf and gravy had a nice flavor. Unfortunately the inside of the meat loaf was cold. It wasn't too pleasant. I wish the inside was hot like the meat was in the shepard's pie. The macadamia nut pie was outstanding. It is like a local version of pecan pie. The nuts complimented the sweet inside. The pie was just amazing. We came here semi-regularly pre-COVID and loved it. We came back tonight and it was such a let down. Service was mediocre. Fish and chips were SO SAD. Frozen unseasoned fish for sure. We came here specifically for the fish and chips so it was so disappointing to see they had changed so drastically in such a bad direction. Our office ordered lunch and everyone was disappointed in the quality. Specifically the meats. The chicken was tough and rubbery, it didn't even seem like real meat. Like it was cartilage glued together. The beef stew was like it came out of a can. The jambalaya was horrible. My full size caesar salad did not fill up the container and was not filling. Loved this Irish pub in the heart of Honolulu! My Irish dip was delicious, and my husband's corned beef and cabbage was a treat. I want to go back soon to try their crab and shrimp melt. And BTW, be sure to have a Smithwick beer! read more
