We are local people and love Must Be Heaven. My daughter and I had lunch there yesterday after church. She had the half Muffuletta and I had the French Dip Sandwich. Both were wonderful and the service was good as usual. We did not order dessert yesterday but love the homemade pies and cookies as well as the hand dipped Blue Bell Ice Cream. As someone who lives in Brenham, we really enjoy the great food and service, and appreciate the owners who support the community in so many different way. I mean, meh. I gave 2 stars because the food didn't make me sick. We came in from Houston and the moment we walked in (it was busy), the vibe was off. The patrons, who I assume were locals, were giving us the stares- I thought it was my imagination, but my friend independently mentioned it after we left. The lady taking the orders, was a cute blonde, but her attitude sucked and she just seemed generally annoyed. Food was fine, I guess, but nothing exceptional. The building and decor are super cute. Too bad the locals aren't a bit more welcoming. The general vibe was grouchy. The whole experience felt like a scene out of footloose.. Small town religious, old folk, lacking a funny bone. My husband and I met up with family driving in from Austin at Must be Heaven this past Saturday August 21st, 2010. We chose the location because Brenham, TX is half way btwn us. You really get the feeling you have stepped back in time when you stumble on this adorable little town. It is truly an American treasure. The local downtown revitalization program has done an outstanding job preserving the original character of this place. I hesitate to write this because you don't want too many tourists and progress to invade what makes small towns so charming. That said there are many delightful little stores up and down the main road. You must check them out. Talk about finding hidden gems!!! Good-- The food is down home delicious and made fresh daily. It is primarily a lunch place with an old time ice cream parlor rolled into it. I must say their chicken salad sandwich is delicious with a side of fresh fruit. Everything looked good and I think everyone enjoyed what they ordered. After walking around to all the shops we ventured back to Must be Heaven for Blue Bell ice cream. Nothings better on a HOT TX summer day than a scoop of your favorite creamy cold desert YUM!!! If you have never had it--- indulge your senses and dive right in... you won't be sorry. The staff are all friendly and you really get the feeling that everyone knows each other. Bad- Although quaint the interior leaves a little to be desired and you kinda feel like you are back in elementary school eating lunch in the cafeteria. Ugly- Nothing to report. We tried to have lunch here on a Saturday afternoon around 1:30. Bad idea! The line was so long, and not moving, so we moseyed on over to another restaurant for lunch. We did however come back for dessert and I only have one word for you - YUM! When you walk into the restaurant, you'll see that it's basically divided into two big rooms. The first big room is the dessert / soda fountain area, and the second big room is where you order sandwiches and salads etc. Both rooms have booths along the sides and tables and chairs in middle. Must Be Heaven, like pretty much all of downtown Brenham, exudes that small town charm in a big, tasty way. The old style soda fountain is awesome, and the homemade pies made my dad's eyes pop right out of his head. I swear the coconut pie was six inches high with mouth-watering meringue... It was a tough call, but we skipped on the pie and went for the Blue Bell ice cream. It just seemed appropriate. It was a warm spring day and something cool sounded just right - plus we were in Blue Bell country. I had a single dip of mocha almond fudge that was HUGE for a whopping $2 and the hubby had a chocolate shake made with Blue Bell Dutch Chocolate ice cream and milk - the way shakes are supposed to be made - for around $3. I love small town prices! Must Be Heaven was a great little stop on our Brenham itinerary. I'd like to try them out for lunch one day, but not if the line is always that bad. I'm a big fan of sandwiches, and especially independant non-chain sandwich shops. Unfortunately, Must Be Heaven was disappointing. I had a french dip, and while everything was good, it was not great. This place is way overrated. Maybe we should have tried the desserts, but we saving it for Blue Bell. The line was out the door for no reason that I can understand. It's just normal overpriced sandwiches, bags of chips, and fountain drinks. Not too much for the vegetarian. Line wasn't too long so we avoided a long wait. Lots of lunch items you can get here, but we opted for pie only. Got 2 slices. One was an apple cobbler pie with a scoop of Bluebell vanilla. So sweet with a crispy crust. Piping hot apples that's easily cooled with a mix of ice cream. I got a slice of bread pudding drenched and dripping full of brandy-spiked caramel. With raisins embedded in the bread pudding, it was quite a decadent dish to top off a big lunch and ice cream earlier. read more

This is the place to go for lunch in Brenham! So you walk in, and this place is a hole in the wall, a big one, but down to earth texas country-y, if that makes any sense. You walk up to the counter/line and you place your order. I went with a combo of chicken salad (chicken and almonds! yay because I hate celery) and the chicken tortilla soup. They make your order in front of you, and they put it on a cafeteria tray, you take it and walk to a table. They also have this fixings bar with cherry tomatoes, carrots, broccoli, baked potato toppings, and tons of dressings. No salad though. I used the stuff to jazz up my soup and chicken salad. Everything I ate was amazing. I wasn't expecting much, looking at seemingly normal sliced bread and cold cuts over the counter, but it was so delicious! The soup was nice and hearty, and the chicken salad was the best I've ever tasted. I also had their peach tea, awesome! The decorations here are so cute, dusty, but cute and vintage, even in the bathroom. Go here! And visit the blue bell factory too. While taking our niece for classes at Blinn College today, we had a coue hours to fill. We looked up this local eatery and loved the 60's style malt shop environment. We had several pies and cheesecakes. Our favorite slice was the Bourbon, pecan, chocolate chip pecan pie. It was so good we ordered it and took back home to Cypress for Thanksgiving dessert. Can't chase it with oreos and caviar but you can get some OK red velvet cake Blue Bell ice cream, they still don't have the new peach cobbler from Blue Bell, shame on them.
