River Rat Restaurant - Baked penne with Italian sausage

TLDR: The River Rat is an overall good experience, but the food ranged from amazing to mediocre…read more The place itself was relatively lively and cozy. The servers were attentive to our needs. The dishes I ate will be rated separately because of their range in quality. Bread Basket: 4/5 The bread basket that came with the prime rib that I ordered was better than most. It came with multiple freshly baked dinner rolls with some char on them and crispy breadsticks, complemented by a garlicky butter. Soup of the Day (Seafood Bisque): 5/5 This soup was the best dish of all that I had ordered. Despite being a side dish for the prime rib, its rich flavor overshadowed everything else I ate for the evening. House Salad: 2.5/5 The salad is a standard salad that you can skip. Nothing special. Louisiana Lemon Pepper Walleye: 4/5 The walleye was the second best dish. It was a well seasoned, large filet that had a great tartar sauce to go with it. This is a dish I would order again if I came back. Prime Rib: 3/5 The prime rib was surprisingly underwhelming. The edges of the prime were a little tougher than I'd like, and the prime rib itself came out a little cold. The au jus could have been reduced to be a little more concentrated as well. Overall, if I were to come back I would choose to order some different menu items, apart from the soup.

UPDATE after revisiting:…read more Unfortunately, my opinion of this place hasn't changed. The restaurant feels extremely dated, the service was below average, and the food was below average as well. What makes it frustrating is that this place has so much potential, but the overall operation feels stale and stuck in the past. There seems to be very little culture or energy among the staff. Some employees give the impression that they've been doing the same thing for 10 years and are simply going through the motions. Nothing feels fresh, exciting or particularly memorable. The biggest missed opportunity is the evening and weekend business. After 8 PM, there should be a reason for people to stay here for drinks--an interesting cocktail program, better bar atmosphere, music, events, late-night specials or something that creates energy. Instead, people looking for that experience are going elsewhere. That's a huge amount of potential business walking out the door. This feels like an upper-management problem more than anything else. The location and foundation are already here. What it needs is fresh leadership with a clear vision for the food, service, bar program, employee culture and overall guest experience. With the right operator, I genuinely think this could become one of the most popular restaurants in the area. Right now, though, everything feels like it's running on autopilot. Ownership needs to recognize how much potential is being left on the table and bring in leadership capable of taking this place to the next level.

It feels like the kind of place that has something for everybody--drinks, food, darts, a little arcade area, and that friendly local-bar vibe where you could easily hang out for a few hours. I only stopped in on a Tuesday to use the ATM, so I haven't had a chance to try the food or drinks yet, but just based on the atmosphere, I'm actually excited to come back and give the place a proper visit. My only complaint was the smell. There was definitely an odd sewage/urine-type smell in parts of the place, and after seeing other reviews mention it, I understand what people are talking about. It wasn't enough to make me dislike the place, but it was noticeable. Without that issue, just based on my first impression, I probably would have given it five stars instead of four. Overall, really cool neighborhood-bar atmosphere and definitely a place I want to come back to. I'll update my review once I've actually had the food and drinks.

Both meals were delicious, fresh, and very satisfying. The weather was beautiful, and we really enjoyed sitting outside on the dock watching the boats come and go. It created a relaxing atmosphere that made the experience even more enjoyable. It wasn't overly busy, and the service was fairly quick. Our server was pleasant and attentive when we spoke with her, and I could tell she was taking care of multiple tables. My only real complaint was that our drinks weren't refilled very often, and we had to ask for refills rather than having them offered proactively. It's a small thing, but I do appreciate having my soft drink kept topped off during a meal. Other than that, the experience was very positive. The prices were reasonable, the food was excellent, and the waterfront setting was fantastic. We'd definitely return and would recommend Bumpers Landing to anyone looking for a relaxing meal by the water.

UPDATE after multiple visits:…read more Now that I live nearby and have been to Bumpers Landing multiple times, my original impression has definitely changed. At best, this place is mediocre--and that's frustrating because the property itself has unlimited potential. The waterfront atmosphere during the summer is easily the best thing Bumpers has going for it. When the outdoor areas are open, it's a great setting. Take that away during the colder months, though, and it starts feeling like just another neighborhood hole-in-the-wall bar. The food is decent but nothing memorable, and the service has consistently been mediocre. A lot of the staff seem like they've been there forever and are simply going through the motions. There's very little energy or hospitality that makes you excited to come back. The culture also seems to revolve heavily around the owner, Paul. There are references to him throughout the bar, including a custom neon sign joking that knowing Paul won't get you a discount. I've also personally watched him enter the restaurant with what felt to me like a "local celebrity" presence. Maybe some regulars enjoy that, but to me it comes across as more ego-driven than guest-driven. I've also noticed political messaging displayed within the business. Regardless of whether I personally agree or disagree with those views, I don't understand the business decision. A restaurant should be somewhere everyone feels welcome. Why potentially alienate paying customers over politics? From an operational standpoint, the biggest issue I see is culture. During my most recent visit, one of the apparent leaders was running around helping serve food and handling whatever needed to be done, which I respect, but the overall staff still had very little energy. It feels like a bar that happens to serve food rather than a restaurant/bar actively trying to create a memorable experience. That's the disappointing part: the location itself could be incredible. Bring in fresh leadership, reinvigorate the staff, improve the food and service, create some actual culture and energy, and take full advantage of that waterfront property. This could easily be one of the best neighborhood bars in the area. Right now, though, I wouldn't recommend it. There are other waterfront options competing for the same customers, and a great location alone isn't enough. Bumpers has all the ingredients to be something special--it just needs an operation that lives up to the property.

It wasn't busy, but it was still nice to get our order taken quickly after we sat down. The beer prices are reasonable, particularly on tap. But, my wife's Moscow Mule seemed a bit weak, and it cost more than the beer. The food arrived quickly, too, and everything was hot off the grill. My wife and I both got the salmon sliders. Each sandwich has a generous chunk of perfectly cooked salmon. I ordered the tater tots, which were amazingly crispy and flavorful. My wife got the same thing, with french fries. The fries are good, but I like the tots better. My daughter's mac & cheese was super cheesy and buttery, and just needed a little salt to make it perfect. My son got a burger with a fried egg on it, and he said it was nice and beefy. Prices were reasonable, too. And, there are big screen TVs wherever you look. I can see this becoming a regular stop for good food and drinks.

We sat down, the music was so loud you couldn't even have a conversation, couldn't hear the waitress, we waited a long time for her to return to our table, we asked her if they could turn down the music and were told "Well I can ask, but the people at the bar want it loud.", We got up and left. Plus, the menu was full of tree nut allergens and there was not one label.
