A lot comes to mind when you hear the name Fresno. Raisins, Agriculture, Bridge to nowhere, but Sushi is not one of them. So when my son asked us to meet him, his lovely wife and our 3 granddaughters for dinner on a recent visit I didn't have my hopes up. Namikaze is a nice quiet restaurant that from its decor could easily be an Italian, French or American restaurant. Just change the paintings on the wall. The Menu is pretty expansive. A full menu of Sushi, noodles, gyoza and rolls made it difficult to choose but eventually we narrowed it down. I always try the Unagi (eel) at any sushi restaurant. It is my barometer for how good everything else will probably be. It was good. I also ordered the Kimono Roll while my wife had Shogun roll. We also tried the Chicken Gyoza. Everything was terrific. Excellent taste and fresh. Next time someone asks me about Fresno I'll say "Fresno! They have good sushi there". Definitely Recommended. read more

I came by for the first time on a weekday lunch with the intentions to grab a quick meal to-go. The lunch crowd is light as to be expected. I was immediate greeted by the two Sushi chefs behind the counter as I walked in. Not long after, the host greeted me and handed me a menu for me to select my order to go. I considered a poke bowl, however, their sauces were pretty standard. So instead I opted for their seaweed salad that came with a number of protein including tuna, edamame, shrimp, avocado, and masago. It was $19, so it wasn't necessarily inexpensive, however I figured a poke bowl with a couple proteins would run me right about there as well. The sushi chef got right away to work preparing my meal and I was in and out within 5 minutes. When I got home, I opened up my box and was a little underwhelmed with the presentation. The protein is cut up into small pieces and mixed in with the seaweed salad. In addition it is not pure seaweed as it is also mixed in with a bunch of other greens such as sprouts. So while the presentation was not what I was expecting, I was pleasantly surprised that I really enjoyed the flavors and textures. I will definitely order this again. read more

Made a reservation but came a bit earlier and they were still able to seat us. Place didn't seem to have a wait for dinner on Saturday but the tables were filled. The place could be a bit cleaner - there was food/crumbs on the chairs. The staff cleaned it up quickly when I asked. They were also very helpful and friendly throughout our meal. Got the karaage and ebi tempura to start - the batter/breading on both weren't what you normally get. The karaage was almost like those frozen chicken tenders. Tempura was okay (sauce lacked oroshi). For the entrees, we got the dragon roll, crunchy roll, and katana roll - all pretty decent, just your typical rolls. We also got the chicken yakisoba and uni pasta with the fresh uni and roe. I wasn't graded as soon as I walk in but a couple minutes later someone finally said I'll be right with you .The place could be a little cleaner and some of the fixtures were broken. I will say our waitress was really nice but not super attentive. We started with spicy garlic edamame, which was OK. We got muscles and a crunchy. My favorite was the crunchy. It was really good. Trying this place for the first time. Saturday are busy and for the looks of it they get pretty busy. I ordered on line for take out. They were going to take an hour to have it ready. But luckily they make it shorter to 10 min. We order sushi and fried rice. The sushi was called tofu lover. This is a vegan sushi. It had tofu in top and cucumbers, avocado, tofu, and asparagus. They were dipped in a sauce. They also ask you what type of sauces you like to dip them in and I got the spicy shriracha and the spicy mayo. The sushi was very delicious only that it seemed very small. I wanted more after I finished it. The fried rice was very good too. The ambiance is very familiar. I saw ladies having fun. So pleased with my first experience here! I just picked up an order to go but will definitely be back in the future. The inside was welcoming and clean. We were in the area and decided to stop in for lunch. The location is clean and nice. We were greeted by the sushi chefs when we entered so it was nice. We ordered the chicken gyozas which were soft and not crispy. The Philadelphia roll was very delicious. The EBI shrimp tempura roll was also very delicious and probably one of the best ones I have had in Fresno. I ordered the tonkatsu ramen which the broth was super flavorful and I enjoyed it but I didn't like the pork that was inside. It was very fatty and squishy and thick. Tried out Namizake Sushi for lunch, and it turned out to be a great choice for the day. I was pleasantly surprised to find out they offer lunch specials, which I hadn't known about before. You can pick two items, and I chose the Crispy Spicy Chicken Rice Bowl and the Ebi Shrimp Roll. Luckily, it wasn't very busy when I arrived, though the crowd did pick up towards the end of my meal. When the food arrived, I was impressed by how delicious it looked. The portions were definitely bigger than I expected. The sushi was fresh and even better with the ginger provided. The chicken was delicious--very crispy and fresh. It wasn't very spicy, but I actually preferred it that way! Overall, it was a great experience and a fantastic lunch special. The first time I was here was a couple years ago. I don't remember leaving with a great first impression. Came here for a second time on the invitation of friends. Second impression was pretty mid as well. They have a large menu with a good variety of non-sushi options that could satisfy most people. We got a bunch of appetizers to share. Someone mentioned all the sushi rolls seem to taste the same. They really like teriyaki sauce on their rolls as well, which was kind of a weird addition to sushi. Appetizers: - loaded fries -- these were okay, the sauces were good, fries were meh, likely frozen - karaage -- I wouldn't actually call this karaage, it tasted like frozen chicken that barely has batter and definitely was not crunchy like karaage should be - gyoza -- pretty good, sauce that came with it was good - sashimi plate (listed under specialty plates, but chose to get this instead of the sashimi appetizer platter due to the small size of the appetizer) -- this was probably the best thing we ate, the salmon was amazing and the opaque white fish was great as well, not sure which fish it was. The only bad thing is that the rice that came with it was steamed rice, not sushi rice I got the origami sushi roll with rice rather than wrapped in cucumber. It was pretty good, except the rice was not actually sushi rice. It was steamed white rice that was unseasoned. The rice was also pretty mushy. Others got the braised pork belly rice bowl, which was okay. The pork belly could have used more flavor and there also wasn't much pork belly compared to the amount of rice they give. Service was okay. They did happily accommodate our table as we had one extra person arrive than what was on the reservation. However, they brought out 3 out of 5 water glasses for us and told us the kitchen was currently washing more glasses. Then they brought out two more waters in plastic cups. Ambiance was fine, it can get pretty loud when the place is full. Overall, probably would not choose to come back again. We got the lunch special- tonkatsu ramen and spicy tuna roll. The ramen was fine, came with single slice of pork and a half jammy egg. Nothing else tho. No corn, nori and other fixins like a traditional ramen. The bowl is also a "lunch size". The spicy tuna roll was lacking flavor. Not spicy at all and tasted bland. Sukiyaki beef rice bowl was also meh. Beef pieces were hard. Takoyaki were decent. Nice crunch even tho they're traditionally not deep fried which they were here. Parking plentiful. We've been coming here for date nights for quite a while and have always enjoyed it, which is why it's disappointing to say the last two visits have been really poor. Both times, the service has felt inattentive and careless. Simple requests, like asking for sauce trays, were ignored, and we were left to pour soy sauce directly onto our plates. After our food was brought out, our server was nowhere to be found. Tonight in particular was frustrating. The restaurant was nearly empty, yet our server became distracted talking with a friend who came in and completely forgot about our table. We finished eating and waited about 10 minutes just to receive our bill. I understand that serving can be a difficult job, but when the restaurant isn't busy, basic attentiveness should still be expected. The menu is not shy here--appetizers, entrees, rice and noodle dishes, and lots of sushi--a mix of basic and distinct options for all. We shared the Takoyaki and Yasai Tempura. Both are standard and not too impressive. I took advantage of their Lunch Special, ordering Salmon Sashimi and Salmon Poke. The sashimi was a thinner cut and good. The poke bowl comes with your choice of sauces and a base; I chose half salad and half rice. It was loaded with lots of greens but I wish there were more fish. My Grandma, Dad, and Aunt were all satisfied with their choices and we left full. A lot of my family raved about their experience at Namikaze--casual and calm, good food, and affordable. You have the option to deep fried the sushi roll at an extra charge. The parking out front the restaurant was limited.
