I was a regular at their Williamsburg location and constantly recommended it to friends which is why the disappointment stung more when this location did not live up to my standards. The store was clean and bright, I ordered my food for pick up and was very quickly able to get in and out and home while the food was still warm. I got the Shanghai chicken stir-fry noodles, pan fried pork buns, and regular scallion pancake. Everything was just ok. Not amazing, not exciting, just neutral. The noodles and pork buns were the most disappointing. The udon-style noodles had very little taste for how much oil they had, and the pork buns were small and mediocre. Not only did the pan fried pork buns seem bigger in my memory they also look MUCH larger in the order menu. Very very sad to call this a pass because I have some friends who also missed the Williamsburg location since we moved but I will not be recommending this. Not bad, not great. Driving down the road near my home, I happened to notice Nan Xiang Express. I had never heard of this restaurant before, but after doing a bit of research, found out that it is a NYC-based soup dumpling restaurant with at least 11 locations all over the United States. I brought the family there for dinner, and we ordered quite a few things. Among the things we ordered were Spicy Crispy Chicken, Spicy Beef Soup Dumplings, Wontons with Peanut Sauce, Pork and Crab Soup Dumplings, Spicy Beef Noodle Soup, and Shredded Beef with Peppers. I was expecting some of the dishes to be very spicy, like Sichuan "mala", but that was based on my mistake that this was a Sichuanese restaurant. It's not, it's Shanghaiese, so some of the dishes may be a bit spicy, but nothing that most people can't handle. The service was great! I was excited to see a Nan Xiang Express location opening in Houston, as I'd read about their New York location and crave dumplings at least once a week. I trialed their fare during the soft opening and enjoyed my visit, though am not sure I'd trek to this location over Chinatown for my dumpling fix. Located in a suburban strip mall, parking is easy and convenient. The inside of the restaurant is clean and brightly lit. Ordering is done through tablets at the front, and food is brought to your individual table after seating. I appreciated the soft opening perk of iced soy milk, which was tasty and fragrant. Service was friendly. Marinaded cucumber: Crunchy and fresh. I liked the garlicky marinade on these cucumbers. Stirfried noodles with beef: Good flavor, but a little dry. The beef was a bit unevenly cooked, with some pieces very tender and others still tough. Portion was generous for the price. Pan fried pork buns: One of my favorite dishes, I was disappointed to see these had been steamed prior to being pan fried. The dough was also much too sweet for my taste, which seemed unbalanced with the filling. I did like the addition of sesame and green onions. Steamed pork soup dumplings: These were well made and I enjoyed the fragrant filling. I could have used a touch more ginger. The wrapper wasn't the thinnest I'd ever had, but it was nice and elastic without being too chewy. Wontons: The wontons were of the large variety, which were a bit too meaty with thick wrappers for me. I enjoyed the broth with roasted seaweed. Choo choo!! Look out, Nan Xiang Express is coming through! The OG spot hails from New York but somehow they perched themselves in our neighborhood of NW Houston! Ample parking meets you in the semi-new plaza by 1960 and 290! Nan Xiang truly lives up to the word "express" in their name with their walk up kiosk ordering system and condiments and water bar for patrons to grab everything they need! There aren't really "servers," but there is someone at the register and someone who brings out your food. First time experience was a little bit chaotic because after ordering you have to walk to their DIY station - grab your waters, chili sauce, soup dumpling sauce, napkins and utensils. Nothing is already at the table and nothing else is brought to you except for the food. Outside of using the kiosk, no one really explained or directed us to the station, and on top of that, it was kind of cumbersome to keep having to get up multiple times to grab what I needed. We ordered the crispy beef noodles, soup dumplings, crispy pork dumplings, and the bok choy with garlic. Bill came out to roughly $45 for those four dishes. I was a bit bummed when they highlighted the soup dumplings, but just after the first bite I could tell it was TOO doughy! Dumpling making is an art and it's incredibly difficult get the thinness ratio correct, and sadly they missed the mark! Same goes for the crispy pork dumplings! I would not get them again here, but the crispy beef noodles were delicious! All the ingredients were fresh, the noodles were crispy, and the bok choy perfectly balanced a heavy meal! Lucky for those who live in Cypress, this spot that has locations in NYC and Boston has made it's way down South and they chose Cypress for their first location. When I walked in, the cashier was nowhere to be found though. They have no fountain drinks and I didn't see tea, but they have self-serve water over near the condiments. The beef crispy noodles is large and messy. The wonton in peanut sauce is saucy and flavorful. The pork crispy bottom buns are similar to soup dumplings, just using bao dough and have crispy bottoms. They were ok, but I prefer the delicate soup dumplings instead. Nice balance of flavors, the beef being tender. The wonton soup was just ok. Not bad, not life changing. The soup dumplings were legit. They had a good amount of soup and the broth inside was savory with the wrapper not being too thick. The spicy peanut sauce wontons were nice. The wontons themselves had good flavor. They weren't spicy at all though to us. The spicy sesame chicken was not spicy either. This is the most Americanized dish that we ate. The chicken was in nice chunks. The sauce was sweet. Very Panda Express vibes with this dish. My friend liked this dish a lot (he also loves panda). Why Nan Xiang Express would choose Houston as it's first location outside of the Northeast US region is beyond me, but I definitely stomped my feet in excitement upon learning this news. And after learning it was only a 15min drive from my office, I rushed here as soon as soft opening was announced. The dine-in area has a very limited number of tables and chairs, which makes sense as the "express" part of its name and the many dishes they serve you in paper bowls, even if you dine in, indicates that this is more of a take it to-go type of restaurant. The first item I had to order was the crab roe & pork soup dumplings of course. Crab Roe is a Shanghai specialty rarely found in any Chinese restaurants in the states, much less Houston. I also ordered the regular pork soup dumplings as a benchmark comparison for flavors. The soup dumplings were probably the only items not served in a paper bowl and came out steaming hot in huge bamboo crates. First bite into the crab roe soup dumpling and you can definitely tell there is a richness that you've never tasted from a regular pork soup dumpling before. I am slightly disappointed it wasn't as rich as when I tried a Nan Xiang branch location in Shang Hai, but how can I expect them to replicate the same level of quality as the birthplace of soup dumplings. The shrimp and cheese ones were fried and the other two were steamed. To drink, we ordered the flavored green teas. My daughter tried the melon and I had the grapefruit/passionfruit. We both liked everything and the drinks had jellies, which we liked. We both said our favorite dumplings were the soup pork ones. They also had a station for condiments and napkins/cutlery. Well one day i was like im just gonna pick it up, also because the app was giving me problems. So my wife called in the order on the way to pick up the food. Its 10 min from house. I took a screenshot of the order, so my wife could call it in. When i got there the price was different. So we checked the order and it was the same amount of food. There just almost a 10 dollar difference that wasnt accounted for and we both could not find where the math didnt add up or where the surcharge came from. I take that back...the fried rice was the best fried rice I have ever had. It was full of fresh vegetables, had lots of egg and not greasy at all.
