We had a group potluck and were going to bring desserts until a friend suggested that we bring Spanish rolls. He said people love them and to order them at a Filipino bakery called Nanding's. Our order was initially placed at another Nanding's location for pickup at 5pm. When we called to increase the order, we found out they were closing at 1pm. The lady on the phone said we can order from this location at Gulick St since it closed at 7pm. We called and placed our order for 50 rolls for pick-up at 5:30pm. Arriving at the store, we were able to park in one of the spaces out front. The lady got our box of rolls, we paid and were on our way. The box was warm and we could smell the fresh bread in our car. Trying them shortly at the potluck, the rolls were still warm and they were so soft and buttery and were not overly sweet. My first time trying these rolls and they were delicious. It's so good, that I will look for them at Filipino bakeries in the Bay Area. read more

Yes, the spanish rolls are great if they are hot and have a slight glazing on them. Oddly enough whenever I get a dozen, half are glazed and the other half are not. If they are right out of the oven, it doesn't really seem to matter as they get eaten so quickly as they are just the right size and they are buttery and slightly sweet. I prefer them hot to cold or reheated but that is a tall order as the bakery is across town for me and I seldom get there these days. I am going to try some other items the next time that I go other than the rolls and will post a review of those things later. read more

Spotted this little bakery just down the street from Ebikes Hawaii. This was our first stop on our ride up to Diamond Head. I had a half dozen bakeries bookmarked, but this wasn't one of them. I went in Yelpless. I wasn't worried though. I know in Hawaii the Aunties behind the counter always take good care of you. I needed help, too, because there was a lot of unfamiliar items in the case. I asked Deborah, the Auntie on duty, about the Spanish Rolls. She said they were one of their most popular items. At three for a dollar, how could I go wrong? I got a half dozen Spanish Rolls and some other items. Deborah smiled broadly as she rang up my items and sent me on my way. Just outside the bakery we immediately pulled a couple Spanish Rolls out of the bag. So soft and subtly buttery. And wow, they seemed to still be a little warm, like they were just made. I was super happy. What a serendipitous find. So we get on the electric bikes and haul ass up to Diamond Head. It's like a ten or fifteen minute bike ride if you aren't riding with a guy like me that insists on stopping at every scenic lookout along the way. LOL. When we get up to Diamond Head we park the bikes and I take a few pictures. Climbing back on the bike I was surprised to discover I now had a flat tire. Clearly, I wasn't going anywhere soon. But, no worries. I knew exactly what to do. I reached into my backpack and took out my bag of pastries from Nanding's. A couple Spanish Rolls later I was able to regain my composure and call the eBikes Hawaii office. It took them about a half hour or so to bring a replacement bike. parking is horrendous here. only three spot in the front and street parking is also sparse. so -1 star for this. otherwise, the items at nanding's is delicious. i've had ube pan de sal but never with a cream cheese filling so we absolutely had to get that and these are popular as they sell out by 12 noon so if you want them, you have to come early. and we're so glad that we did. they were so yummy! fluffy and the cream cheese filling gave it just that extra oomph and slight sweetness that helped filled us up as this was our brekkie. we also got the portuguese sausage roll. i thought it was just okay but my son loved it b/c he loves portuguese sausage. i did forget to order the spanish rolls though. doh! next time i guess...that is if i can find a parking spot...again. read more

We bought 6 orders of mungo hopia (36 pieces) Absolutely horrible, They were stale. We also purchased 6 bibinkas and they were also dry and stale. We were visiting from California and staying in Waikiki so by the time we opened the packages, it would have been too complicated to return them. Huge disappointment. I go here once a week on the week day. Go early, I'd say 5am as everything is hot and fresh! I order a dozen pandesal and the hot dog rolls as they are my favorite. The line after 5:15am gets a little long and wait sometimes can be annoying as some people in line still deciding what to order in front of the cashier. I wouldn't blame them as the glass window where the baked goods are at is blocked by the people waiting in line. The area is small, so it might be a problem if you are claustrophobic. There's 3 parking spots in front and I was lucky enough to snag the last one during heavy rain. I was so happy that the Spanish rolls and pandesal are just what I would expect from Nanding's. Some great Filipino finger foods here! And they open early enough for a quick stop in the morning! The staff were vibrant and welcoming as they catered to a continuous flow of customers (they were busy when I went!!) swiftly and quick enough to get customers on their way. I enjoyed their chicken and pork siopao my coworkers call the Filipino manapua! I also had some Filipino sweet bread that was so warm and buttery I ate it all before I got to pair it with my coffee. Their parking lot has 4 stalls out front but street parking adjacent to the bakery. Their location is in an industrial area downtown but easily accessed if you're passing by for work. They had tons of pastries to choose from and lots to offer. I would definitely go back to try other items on their menu. read more

Lawd Ham Mercury!!!!! The last two work functions, I've had coworkers bring "Spanish rolls". I've searched high and low, but today I found and I conquered. No matter what time you go, the bread is warm and lovely. Parking is terrible, but depending on time of day, it's do-able. BIG CHANGE!!! They close at 6PM, not 7! Also, bought one dozen, total $5.03. Spanish roll + cheap Filipino pastry HEAVEN. Their hours are great and everything is baked fresh in the morning (and because of this fact, you want to be here early). You can't go wrong with anything here- I've had the balintawak, ube rolls, corned beef rolls, etc on past visits. I will say that the balintawak is more of the bread than the filling and I'll give Golden Coin +1 on theirs, but as a whole, Nanding's is a lot better. I absolutely loved this place. They have a great variety of savory breads and sweet breads, good for snacks and lunch. They can be busy so just be patient. They also only accept card transactions with a minimum of $10 so that means A LOT Of bread since their price point is so slow. If you're not very hungry I recommend bringing cash. Love the Spanish rolls! Been giving these away to friends. Soft, lightly sweet buttery treats. Kids like those Arabiki rolls. Sort of like hot dog buns using the Arabiki sausage instead. Spanish rolls - them buttery goodness. At my old job, my coworkers would always bring in boxes and boxes of these. I never knew what they were until I tried it. Little did I know this little hole in the wall is DOWN THE ROAD from my house! I guess all the best hole in the wall places are located in Kalihi! LOL! They have about 4 parking stalls right in front of the store. I have never been to the place before since usually someone else brings it to work. But since my coworker was on a business trip, my supervisor tasked me to pick up some pastries for a weekly meeting where my coworker took it upon herself to do this and now we're just following her trails. We start work at 6am... so I am so happy this place opens at 430am!! Gives me enough time to pick up and get to work on time. I picked up some Spanish rolls of course and some corn beef rolls, ham and cheese rolls, and Portuguese rolls. I've had all before and my favorite is the corn beef rolls and hot dog. Prices are decent $1.50 each and Spanish rolls were 3 for $1! You cannot beat that! They even have adobo rolls, ensaymada, ube, hot dog rolls and more! Nanding's is known for their Spanish rolls among many other Filipino baked goods. I ordered two dozen Spanish rolls and grabbed a few bags of day old butter rolls. The Spanish rolls were piping hot! That's the best way to eat it. The sweet and buttery goodness is so addicting that I have to make sure I don't eat more than two in a minute. I can't put a number for the amount you should get per person. But like I said, it's best eaten when hot. There is very limited parking space in front. I think there were only four spots. The building next door has a parking lot, but there are several signs that clearly say no parking for Nanding customers. I had to wait a few minutes for someone to exit one of the spots. Once inside, they only allow two people at a time, so I waited a minute before entering. They were very quick in getting my order ready. Overall, it is definitely worth the wait for the Spanish rolls. The early mornings can be very busy especially on Saturdays. If they could find a way to get more parking spots, that would help, but that won't stop me from adding rolls to my belly. read more

I've actually been here a few times for the infamous Spanish Rolls. Like Judy C mentions those have gotten me out of quite a few rushes when I needed to bring a potluck item, and the counter people may not be the most social bit they are efficient! OMG when those are fresh and Hot they are Heaven! I also think they're perfect because kids and adults love them, perfect snacks to pick on and so affordable. They open at 430am so when I've traveled to the outer islands for work it was easy to pick up so early. Over the past 2 weeks I've stopped in 3x to pick up the Custard Pumpkin Pie. All 3 gatherings that I've been to they were a hit. Good texture, flavor, crust was flaky and the best thing is their Price Point of $10.50. These are Very close to Lee's but not quite as delicious and the size is a little smaller. I stopped in day before Thanksgiving and was able to pick up pies without pre-ordering them. I bought a hotdog bun, plain empanada, and a custard pie. They were all delicious. My friends especially enjoyed the custard pie because it was made fresh, custard was ono and just right! I will definitely go back again to try more ono goodies. I was first introduced to Nadings because of my church nearby, Kalihi Union. We enjoyed the buttery spanish rolls. There are a few stalls in front of this unmarked bakery on Gulick Avenue. Take a walk inside and find local style hospitality and reasonable prices. They are famous for their Spanish Rolls - only $1 for three pieces! I cannot resist the Custard Pie - just $8 - wow! The crust is fantastic (not mushy) and the custard is the right amount of egg, sugar, cream, and vanilla. YUMMY! Flew back from Maui........drove straight from the airport to Kalihi to look for the Nanding's bakery. Nanding's was pretty easy to find..........just off of Gulick Street & North King Street. The little bakery a GEM of a store in Kalihi! There is limited parking in front of the store, I want to say there are about 4 or 5 stalls.......but I was lucky today, as when I got there, a space was open just for me. I walk in.........set my beady eyes on the custard pie, and I think I almost fainted when I saw the price of the custard pie! No worry gang..........I did not faint, but at just $8.00 bucks & some change for a whole pie! Daaaaaay'um! How can go wrong??????? Maaaaaaaaaaaan, I wanted to buy two pies, but I figured I better not, as a pie in my house can me very dangerous (to the pie). So I forked out $8.38, and I ran out the store with pie in hand. Jumped into my car, & hit da gas..........got on the freeway, and off I went................ straight home! When I got home, the pie & I got to know each other real well! Burp! What can I say about the custard pie? The custard was creamy & delicious! This custard pie would easily give a hard rub to Dee-Lite bakery, Ani's Bake Shop, or the old Kapiolani Bakery! I got hooked on the spanish rolls a while ago. You get those a few times then you wonder about the others. You try them, you like them, you actually like them a lot. As simple as it is, I really like the big ensemada. It's not about the size it's about the amount of butter and sugar atop that tasty, soft, delicate bread bun. It goes so well with my early morning coffee. Such a great way to start the morning. Everyone seems to like their custard pies. Their pandesals, other pies, hopias, mamons and bread loafs like lilikoi, mango, and banana. They are all good, and go well with the decent cup of coffee they have there.. This hole in the wall might a little difficult to locate with such delectable goodies but it makes the hunt worthwhile. If you're coming from Ewa, this is a great place to stop for a morning bite. You can still get here, have a little morning coffee to do with your delight, and still beat the early morning traffiic rush. When I ate their choco chip cookie in the car after a huge dinner at Ray's Cafe this past Monday, I had a craving for the choco chip goodies so I made a special trip here this morning. Arrived shortly after 10am and this place was BUSY!!! All parking spots were full and even some people were double-parked waiting in their cars. I was advised don't let the line intimidate me as it moves fast. But if you ask me, a line is a good thing because it's an indicator that the product or service must be good. As I walked in I immediately looked for their cookies and saw them but to my disappointment, they didn't have any chocolate chip scones. When it was my turn I asked for the scones but was advised they were out and not planning to make any today but perhaps tomorrow. Perhaps I made the mistake of calling my sister before I got here because she strongly hinted that my favorite niece (I only have one so she wins by default) and my brother-in-law would enjoy them so I ended up getting 1/2 a dozen. My bag was HEAVY!!! These cookies are so ginormous, but no complaints from me. I know this place is known for their Spanish rolls and pan de sals but I'm a big fan of their chocolate chip cookies and chocolate chip scones. NOTE: This place reminded me of Chinatown. There was this elderly lady behind me that was so bossy as she directed people move closer to keep the line tight and she even tried to cut in front of me! And she only bought 3 Spanish rolls. I pretty much come here for the same thing the majority of the regulars come here for: the Spanish rolls! My staples are the Spanish rolls and Pandesal. The Spanish rolls are like little bites of Heaven! They're buttery and delicious and best when warm and freshly baked. They bake them all day long so it's likely you'll get them fresh if you don't mind waiting a few minutes. Pandesal, quite literally means "salt bread" but it's not salty at all. It's kind of a plain tasting bread that tastes best when warm and fresh. In my opinion, it tastes pretty good plain but many spread peanut butter, butter, jelly, etc. on it or dip it in coffee or hot cocoa. They have many other things to offer besides Spanish rolls and Pandesal but those are probably the most popular menu items and people usually order them by the dozen. They have cookies, brownies, Pianomo (a sponge cake roll with different fillings), bars, and other Filipino desserts. Their prices are reasonable but they only accept cash-no cards. Parking is horrible-they only have a few stalls in front of the bakery and there isn't much room for street parking. The bakery is kind of in a sketchy looking area. It's both a business and residential type of area on lower Gulick Avenue of Kalihi. Service is so-so. Some days the service is great and some days the employees seem overwhelmed as the line can get crazy and go out the door-especially in the morning when everyone is trying to get their pastry fix. I highly recommend trying the Spanish rolls and giving this bakery a try. They have a wide variety of pastries and although it's not in the best location, I'm sure you'll find something you'll like here! read more

Love Nanding's bakery. I always get the Spanish roll and this time I wanted to try something new so I got a few other things. It's really cheap and for the things that I got I only paid $22. I love bread and it will always have my heart so I'm glad I found this place. The only thing that I'm always annoyed about is the parking. Thankfully when I go there's always open stalls. It's only hard to reverse out of there because you can't make a u turn to reverse park. I can see how it may be a safety hazard if you're trying to get bread early in the am. First food in Hawaii, and it's fabulous! Simple, beautiful pastries, love the purple swirls in their fluffy Ube Ensaymada. The veggie Lumpia only costs a dollar, and it's very flavorful, even when it's cold.The Glazed Custard Roll is simple, but the custard is great, and the bread is perfect. Wow! Soooo much selection! It took us a while to decide what we wanted. Yelpers said that the Custard Pie was really good. First of all, it was not refrigerated. At least we only bought a slice. Food safety comes to mind. It was smooth but not sweet enough. There were no flecks of any cinnamon or nutmeg. Not saying that it was bad but, kinda bland. Bottom crust was a little burnt. I also bought a steamed purple rice wrapped in bananas leaves.I eat this a lot @ other plaA little overly oily ( I understand they use oil for the stickiness on the leaves). Great texture! Could use a tiny bit more sugar. U know what?! If u buy a bunch & stick it in the fridge & it gets hard, u can microwave it! It becomes nice & warm & pliable!
