I'm a food writer on vacation in LA this week. Even though I'm officially off work, I couldn't resist checking out Nando's after spotting it on a walk with my family. I pointed to it and said I bet they make good homemade pasta. My husband laughed and said I hadn't even seen the menu yet. During the day, I did some research and confirmed my suspicions. Eater had raved about this place too. I was in Manhattan Beach with four kids, no babysitters, and had been on a boat all day. My husband and I put the kids down at 8:30 and told our 15-year-old to call us if anything went wrong. We snuck out. We sat in a cozy booth in the back, the music was fun, and there were no frills--you came for the food. The owner was wonderful and took us on a culinary journey to Sicily, dish by dish. He guided us and gave us some of the best bites of my life. I told my husband I had no assignments in LA but couldn't resist writing about this experience. The arancini, lobster pasta, and Milanese were all to die for. My husband, a foodie and restaurant investor, is usually not impressed. But when he tasted the lobster/crab pasta and exclaimed, "This is excellent," I couldn't help but smile. He rarely says "excellent." The owner's brother was in the back, cooking, and we had to remind ourselves we weren't actually in Italy because the food, smells, and history said otherwise. Go here--it's a hidden gem. I'll be writing a story about Nando's this week, and I think it'll be titled "The perfect way to make-up after a marital squabble." www.manifesting4life.com

Very good Italian restaurant close to Manhattan beach pier. Appetizers: Focaccia bread- 5/5 Served warm, garlicky and nicely salted. Generous portion great for sharing with 2-4 people Caesar salad- 5/5 Refreshing, fresh, crispy. Wish it had anchovies but otherwise very good. Lobster ravioli- 4.5/5 Relatively light dish. Tasty, with small pieces of lobster Bolognese- 3/5 Most disappointing dish. Sauce was missing flavor. Have definitely had better. Tiramisu- 5/5 Definitely hit the spot. Service- 5/5 Note: they don't serve cocktails and hard liquor. Wine only.

Sicilian dining without traveling to Italy... My dining partner* (on this wonderful occasion) and I dined at Nando Trattoria on a Sunday evening. Nando is a cozy, authentic Italian restaurant located in Manhattan Beach not far from the shoreline. We parked at a meter on Manhattan Beach Bl. and took a very short relaxing walk to the restaurant. The environment was modern, vibrant and welcoming. The ambiance was intimate and subdued with soft lighting and soothing background music. We try to follow a mostly plant-based (vegan) diet. While entrees on the menu were very limited in that regard, they were very open to customizing something just for us. We started with a delicious spinach salad with pine nuts. For our entrees, after describing our likes to Valerio (waitstaff), the chef, Alessio, concocted a simply amazing vegan pasta dish off-menu. The dish was made up of pasta and accompanied by a light tomato based sauce with capers, olives, mushrooms and other vegetables. The texture of the sauce was creamy and clung perfectly to each al dente piece of pasta. All of the flavors were wonderfully balanced and robust. The dish was outstanding all around (timing, plating and OF COURSE... taste). Everyone working there enhanced our authentic Italian dining experience. Service was very warm, friendly and efficient. We look forward to our next visit! Grazie to Dario, Alessio, Valerio and Juan Carlo for an outstanding experience! *Another collaborative review. :)

Fabulous Happy Hour Menu! Started w/ fresh spinach & pear salad. We ordered their Margherita Pinza too. Outstanding. We sipped on their Rosé. We sat outside & enjoyed our al fresco nosh. Very attentive warm service. They could not have been nicer! Met the chef too who was very sweet! HIGHLY recommend their Happy Hour menu! So much food & wine for a steal! We'll be back soon!

Atmosphere - Indoor and outdoor seating available. Would recommend reserving a table. Taste - We had the Burrata, Gamberoni Blue, Crostone, Tagliatelle Alla Bolognese, Paccheri Di Mare, and tiramisu. Everything was fresh, authentic and well prepared. We also had 2018 Aleksander Wine which was well balanced,m and paired well with the food. Customer Service - Excellent! Staff was very attentive and friendly. Price - Average

I was a bit skeptical walking in since there was only one other family in the restaurant. My mom found this place on yelp and chose it for her bday. NANDO DID NOT DISAPPOINT. This is legit Italian food. There was not a single thing we ordered that made me think 'meh' or 'I've had better'. The one thing that really stood out to me was the generous portions of seafood/lobster in our pastas. The huge chunks of lobster made the prices of the plates worth it. I wish I took pictures because the presentation was wonderful, but I was just too hungry. The food tasted too good to stop and take a picture. Pasta was cooked perfectly and all appetizers were well worth it. As a local, I highly recommend Nando if you're looking to try something new or have friends visiting from out of town! Let's keep this place busy South Bay!!

Takeout review: this is my fourth order from Nando and I'm impressed by both the quality, price, and portions ... Not pictured but the rigatoni bolognese is also excellent. Would recommend truly everything we have tried here: vegetable plate, spaghetti, branzino limon.

An Italian gem in Manhattan Beach! Came here on a whim and they sat us outdoors with our dog and service was impeccable. Our waiter Juan was absolutely amazing and so attentive to us the entire night. He deserves most of the kudos for tonight since he absolutely crushed it. The food was also quite amazing. We ordered burrata to start and it was so fresh and delicious. The flavor came from the Calabrian chili and the small bed of grilled veggies, and of course the prosciutto. I highly recommend ordering the gamelli in truffle sauce since it was to die for. The Wagyu pasta was soft and melted in our mouths but the gamelli was something else with the truffle, that just elevated the whole dish. I don't get Italian often but Nando's definitely does it right!

    My opinion of this restaurant

This place should be dead last on your list of places to eat in Manhattan Beach. The food took over an hour to come out, and the waiter was... strange- insisting we follow these odd Italian customary dinner rules. They are trying hard to give "good service" it's off putting, ie someone leaning over me all up in my space splitting a pasta dish we were sharing one painfully slow spoonful at a time, or the strange man holding open the door to the women's bathroom making my girlfriend pretty uncomfortable. Maybe next time just go in with her! While all these things were certainly unpleasant, they weren't enough to fully ruin the experience. That happened when I got the check. We got an appetizer, an entree, and a salad to split with 1 cocktail and they tried to give me a bill for $170, trying to slip in a $15 charge for water we didn't even ask for. $25 for the cocktail, which by the way they aren't allowed to serve- they don't have a liquor license. But the server said he "had a bottle of vodka stashed away" he could make a cocktail out of. That alone implies that they are in it to bleed you for as much money as possible, as they don't even have an option on the menu for a cocktail- meaning he just chose some arbitrary number which was, of course, ridiculously more than what a cocktail costs. If I could give 0 stars I would. Don't give it a try, just go somewhere else

WOW. 5+ Stars I celebrated our anniversary dinner here at NANDO. My husband and I searched the web through and through to look for a cute small Italian restaurant that we've never been to or heard of. There were so many choices and we randomly went with NANDO after looking through photos ... (the photos on yelp does not do them justice) We were treated with such amazing service that we placed NANDO on our top list of restaurants that we want to come back to and recommend to our friends. * Amazing service * Great Ambience * FOOD FOOD FOOD We reserved this place for our anniversary. We were given a nice table indoors in the middle of the restaurant - even offered another table per preference.. we actually really liked our tiny table in the middle :) While looking into our menu, the owner brought out a champagne for us to celebrate our anniversary! how thoughtful! we already started the evening in good spirits! Ordered: - foccacia bread with truffle - Carpaccio Di Manzo - Gemelli Norcina - Cioppino Seafood The food was phenomenal. As someone who rarely eats Italian food, i thoroughly enjoyed every item that we ordered. Foccacia bread was so good! we personally didn't finish the bread worried that we would be too full to enjoy the other dishes. Every item was perfectly seasoned and presented! I can't honestly express how much I enjoyed our meal here. You have to come and try it! We already decided to celebrate our next birthday at this restaurant to try other menu items. Once finished and paid for our meal, the waiter told us to stay because the owner wanted to celebrate our anniversary again with a dessert! How thoughtful of them! He brought out panna cotta for us.. and wow. we were both blown away of how amazing the panna cotta was. We both shared that this might be one of the best dessert we've had in years! Coming again for this! It was a great evening for us and we feel that NANDO gave us an anniversary celebration

    Two Italian sparklers, both good.

Truly enjoyable experience with a nice indoor atmosphere, lots of outdoor seating, and a well thought-out wine list. Both the Italian sparkling wines we tried were very good, and I was impressed that the waiter matched the Italian wine profile to that of a favorite French Champagne on the menu (just didn't want to pay $35/glass for it). Had a nice Chianti too, which can be hit or miss with me. But no complaints about the food: the focaccia was dense and moist, our caesar salad was very good (although a bit overdressed), the carpaccio was good, and our pasta bolognese was terrific. Or was it? While it was tasty and well prepared, when you're paying over $30 for a pasta dish, you have to ask yourself if it was better than anything else around in the same price range. We're not sure it was. Even in the South Bay, there are others that compare or exceed the experience for less (granted, not a lot less). Not a great value, but certainly a nice food experience. The service was spot on and attentive...until it wasn't. Yes, the waiter was excellent. But as we were seated inside and most of the diners were eating outside, the waiters were easily distracted. No one checked on our meals, although they cleared our plates quickly. When it came time for the bill, it took us a long time to flag down someone. Finally, a busboy(?) came and took care of us (just as they had delivered and cleared the plates). Big props to them--the busser staff was on point.

The Caesar had a touch of spiciness and was dressed with toasted bread crumbs, a nice touch. I had the bolognese. It was tender and meaty and the pasta had the right amount of bite. The bread alone is phenomenal, and the meatballs are tender and packed with flavor. The only major downside to treating apps as my main meal? I begrudgingly have to share with the table! ;) Because the menu is so good across the board, coming here with a larger group is really the best move. It gives everyone an excuse to order family-style and try even more items--our group go-tos include the Calamari Fritti, Crispy Eggplant Parmesan, and one of their hand-crafted pizzas. Plus, since it's cheat day, pairing the meal with one of their crisp, local IPAs from the draft list is an absolute must. Once the waistband is thoroughly loosened, we finish off the night with dessert. We usually just let the table go with whatever seasonal special they're running, and it never disappoints. There are two TV's (that I saw) so maybe it might be a decent, hidden spot for me to catch a game at. For now, it's on my I really like, but don't love it.

I ordered Combo # 1 which comes with beef lasagna, ravioli (you can choose between cheese, beef or spinach; I got the cheese), spaghetti with meatballs, and garlic bread. Unfortunately, my entree did not meet my expectations. The lasagna, ravioli, and spaghetti were crammed into one plate and topped with too much sauce. I couldn't even see the lasagna and ravioli. It felt like I was tasting multiple things in each bite. I would have preferred to see and eat each item separately. Additionally, I did not find any of it tasty except maybe the ravioli. And don't get me started on the garlic bread. Suffice to say I've made better at home. For me, a 4-5 star experience starts with great food. As much as I was impressed with the service and value, I can't say that I would be excited to recommend this place since the food was, in my opinion, just okay.

Bread is not complimentary but we ordered a half order. Overall everything was quite good. The lemon drop cocktail was perfectly balanced, not too sour. The restaurant is small but very cozy. With mirrors on the wall it gives a larger impression. A great place to enjoy a great meal.

It was everything I was hoping for. Traveling solo, I sat at the bar. I had a super cool view of the sunset through the front windows. My bartender/waiter was amazing. She made me feel welcome, engaged me right away, and was a bonafied professional who Knows Service. I took her recommendation and ordered the Putanesca with Blackened chicken, and had the pair salad. AMAZING! She went through all of the specials (she knew it cold) but I went with the reco and was blown away. Anyway, I don't write these things often. Trust me - you will enjoy his spot. Ciao, saludos.

Seafood Combo Pasta (9/10): Very fresh pasta that doesn't feel too heavy in the mouth. Sauce is light and it is loaded with protein. Scallops were very tender and shrimps were huge. Paired with lemon and some bread on the side I was dipping the extra bread to soak up the extra sauce when I was done with the noodles. A must-try if you like seafood. Both plates were generous with portions and the bread appetizer was fresh with a garlicky olive oil dip.

UPDATE! We came…read moreback about a month later to celebrate Hubbers' birthday, but the experience wasn't the same. I'm guessing since they're coming to a permanent closure, it only makes sense that the quality of the experience (food and service) had began to going down. We were seated immediately, so we were off to a good start. It took a bit of time for Daniel (yep! We got the same server from the last time) to come around and get our orders. It wasn't too bad since the wait gave us the opp to decide on apps and mains, so we got to put all our orders in at once. CALAMARI: Battered thin and crispy. Dash of lemon juice made it better. Quality? Yes. Quantity? Not so much. I thought it was pricey for the amount we got. PEPPERCORN POLPETTINE: Meatballs in cream sauce. Even with the whole peppercorns, the sauce was good. The meatballs, however, didn't taste or look homemade at all. (I recently made frozen meatball soup at home and the meatball's flavor was pretty much similar.) So.. meh... BRUSCHETTA ALLA CHECCA: This was the best app out of the three. Crostini was perfect and the toppings were all perfectly balanced. SPAGHETTI AI NERO DI SEPPIA: Looked great, but lacked flavor. Asked for fresh grated cheese and added black pepper which helped a little, but still missing something... Hubbers got the linguine pesca mare which he loved (he emptied his plate!) So I guess that says a lot. And I'm really glad he liked it, being his birthday and all. He also chose crème brûlée to finish off his birthday treat. (No, they didn't comp it - which is fine, and I don't expect them - or any business - to, even more since they are shutting down. I understand they need all the profit they can get.) Overall a little less stellar than the first visit. I'll admit I was a teenee bit disappointed since we had an amazing experience the first time. All the same, I'm still glad of the experience and wish them well on their future endeavors!
