Great bakery and a must try for its bingsu and cakes! I ordered a fruit cake for my promotion ceremony and it was a hit! The cake was airy and not too sweet with plenty of strawberries layered throughout. As for the bingsu.. phenomenal! They use frozen milk shavings as their shaved ice, two layers of fruit (strawberries, kiwi, melon), cornflakes for added texture, condensed milk, and a scoop of vanilla ice cream. It's light, not too sweet, and hits the spot. Though this bakery not as frequented as Cafe Breeze or Shilla, it's definitely comparable. A sweet old man (maybe the owner?) made the fruit bingsoo for us and it was really good (better than Shilla)! This was my second time here, party of 4 Korean ladies. We had a Korean dessert called SNOW made of frozen shaved milk, topped with yummy fresh fruit and red beans. (Don't get the plain shaved ice because Snow, made of frozen milk, is so much softer and better than frozen ice.) Got the fried dough (pictured), a sweet potato bun, and a strawberry smoothie bubble tea. Fried dough pastry was amazing. Best one I've ever had in the states. I bought and ate it around 7pm and it was still moist/soft on the inside and crispy/sweet on the outside. At other bakeries, this is usually soggy on the outside with the sugar melted on the outside. 5/5 Sweet potato bun was deliciously sweet and chewy. One of my favorites. 5/5 The strawberry smoothie was more milky-yogurt-y than fruity (which was what I expected). The bubbles weren't fresh and soft. Skip this. Another one of the many Korean bakeries in Annandale. I just dig 'em all as alternative options for days you get too bored of one or another. The seating is limited and so is parking, but the baked goods are good. You won't be disappointed. Personally, I like the bingsoo at Le Matin de Paris better though. Used to go to this Annandale Napoleon Bakery location much more frequently in the past 5-years, however, stopped going there until just recently due to decreasing quality of the goods. During my last visit, noticed that several items out for sale, particularly the bread-type selection were stale and appeared to have been on the shelf for more than a few days. Located among Korean themed community businesses. The staff appears disinterested in customer service, and neither greets or inquires of anyone walking in and looking at the goods. Noticed staff talking on the phone near the back of the store when customers were at the counter to check-out. Not sure what has happened to this location, however, the selection is also less than what it had been previously. This is a chain of franchises, and would recommend seeking out one of the other locations with more of a focus on building a positive customer experience. Location has very limited parking in the front, and patrons may have to park on the street, or in other lots nearby. read more

As Stephanie N. mentioned, this place makes me think of the anime/manga Yakitate Japan! as well, but for different reasons. This is a kind of small bakery (Pantasia South Tokyo branch) going up against the goliath empire of Shilla (St. Pierre main branch) and the next in line Le Martin de Paris (some other chain?). Will it survive or be crushed to oblivion? Does anyone in the store have solar hands to help create more deliciousness in the bread? Is there someone in the store who will one day rise up to invent the next great bread and needs my support to achieve the dream? Eh...in any case, Napoleon does the standard Korean/Asian bakery staples and does a pretty good job at it. Cream buns, castella, Swiss roll cakes, pizza breads, highly fattening butter cream bread, chestnut bread, fruit tart things, and the like. I noticed that Fresh World/El Grande Supermercado is stocking their baked goods in the bakery. Since Asian bakeries tend to be pretty similar, here are a few things that make this place stand out a little in my mind. 1. Prices are slightly lower than other places. 2. Kind of greasy, but I enjoy the curry pan/bbang (curry bread), a panko covered deep fried bread stuffed with curry potatoes. I don't remember seeing this elsewhere. 3. Not Shilla. I shouldn't rag on Shilla so much, but still, I kind of feel like I should support somewhere not as popular, less crowded, and with similarly delicious baked goods. They don't have as much seating though. 4. They seem to practice the art of saabisu (service). In Japan, probably Korea as well, since they leave the goods out at room temperature all day, they normally don't try to sell day old bread the next day. ::cough cough SHILLA cough cough:: That means after a certain time, stuff gets marked down or they'll toss in a few extra goodies. This is call saabisu taimu (service time), or service for short. Last time when I was picking up a few things at Napoleon in the evening, they threw in a few extra cream buns. None were moldy. All tasty. I haven't tried their bingsu. The last time I tried the green tea boba, the bubbles were a little too hard but the smoothy was good. read more

I LOVE bingsoo, you love bingsoo.....we ALL love bingsoo! The weather last night was absolutely gorgeous; it was so nice I put the top down on my way home. I decided to take the long way home so I could go through Annandale and look for Napoleon Bakery. This was a hot tip given to me when I went to a nail salon on Wednesday, and it did not disappoint! I walked in to a cute bakery that was beckoning for me to buy more than just bingsoo. There were lots of buns, breads, and countless other goodies that seemed reasonably priced. I went after my fav red bean bingsoo; it was so much cheaper here than at Le Matin (around $4.50), and definitely not as sweet. There was a little shaved ice at the bottom, with a syrup of some sort (I think). Then there was mochi (dear God I love finding those little pieces!!!!), red beans, and fresh fruit, along with another layer of shaved ice. It was a portion meant for sharing, but I wasn't about to. I may have looked like a pig, but at least I was a piggy with a smile! This is my new favorite dessert place, thanks to the ladies at the Crystal Towers Hair & Nail Salon! read more

The Bingsoo tasted amazing, was well presented and well portioned. The ice cream was placed on top of red bean w/ syrup lined with fruit and crushed ice on the bottom...mmm... Definitely recommend going to this bakery. They provide free samples of their baked goods, make red-bean cakes and other yummy treats. Stopped by during lunch and it was very cute! I felt like I was walking into an episode of Yakitate! Japan :-D .... .. mm... maybe I should have kept that thought to myself. Anyways, number of great breads sold here, korean owned w/ a french twist. I purchased an almond cream bun ($1.5) and red been smoothie ($4.50). The bun was yum yum, but the red bean smoothie was too sweet :( I could onyl drink about 1/2 before tossing it. *Sigh Oh well, I'd love to try the Fruit Bingsoo next time and some of the other breads. After eating at honey pig my friends and I strolled over to get some bubble tea. Well I didn't want anything really but after sitting there I decided to get some bingsoo. Listen, the amount of ice that was on that thing almost brought me to tears. That and the fact I had to do an ice excavation to find the froyo, then continue much deeper to get to the sad fruit on the bottom. I don't even like melon that much and I feel like that was all there was. The only saving grace was the mochi but otherwise the experience was depressing. read more

Came here for an Asian cake, ie. cake with cream and no icing. They have three sizes to choose from, small for around 6-7 people, medium for around 9-10 people and large for 12-14 people. We saw that they have chocolate cake and fruit cream cake, and a few other flavors in all 3 sizes. The fruit cake has fruits inside layers of cake. The chocolate cake has chocolate cream and pieces of chocolate and the cake itself is not overly chocolate nor sweet. When we got there, they just sold the medium fruit cream cake we want. But then the lady behind the counter reassured us that they have more in the back that need decorating. Took her around 5-10 mins to decorate it and, viola, we have the cake we wanted. Staff was helpful and friendly. They also have various kinds of bread products on the side as well. We knew they're freshly made because we saw bakers at the back making breads while the lady was decorating our cake. We would come back to try their buns later. read more

This is my second time coming back here. I came here the first time for their BingSoo (shaved ice with toppings). It was good, especially after visiting three other bakeries in search of good BingSoo. They give you decent amount of toppings and the shaved ice is excellent. They are promoting their Snow Ice BingSoo which is a finely shaved milk ice over toppings. It was what a tried and I loved it. Coffee BingSoo is also good. Being satisfied with the BingSoo, I decided to try some their baked bread (which is baked in-house). I bought varieties of bread. The fresh cream bread, their original castella, and the rolled castella. The breads were very moist and soft. It reminded me of this nice bakery back in Korea. I highly recommend this place, even over popular bakeries such as Shilla and Tour De Jour. It really is a hidden gem. read more

Ordered my wedding cake from here and it was delicious!! If you don't like your cake to be overly sweet and if you prefer whipped cream frosting over buttercream, this is the place to go! Cho (the baker/owner) is friendly and very accommodating. We had a 3 tiered wedding cake, portioned to feed 200 people. He allowed us to have different flavors for the tiers and charged us a fixed price for the whole thing rather than per portion (which most places do). He arrived on time to the reception site for set up and did a beautiful job working with the florist to decorate our cake with fresh flowers. Everyone loved our cake and asked where we got it. If you're planning a wedding and are looking for a place to order your cake, I highly recommend you talk to Cho! I found him through a friend and am so glad I ordered from him. The cake was beautiful and even better than I could have imagined. I let him have a lot of creative license and only requested the flavor and the writing on the cake. The first time I went to this bakery it was a warm Sunday afternoon. There was plenty of parking in the lot because it is not a place that many people go to. I saw other reviews and decided to try the bubble tea. Its cheap for the Annandale area and it was creamy smooth with plenty of flavor. I had gotten the Taro flavor. While I waited for the bubble tea, I checked all the different FREE SAMPLES they had. There were soooo many. The prices were really cheap too. With the boba tea, I walked out with three pastries all for under ten dollars! I would definitely recommend going here for not for the FREE SAMPLES but also for the really friendly customer service!!! read more

Came here for a wedding cake consultation based on a recommendation and left incredibly insulted. We asked for a simple, smooth 2-tier buttercream cake, and he quoted us $100-$150 and said that he doesn't charge delivery. We then went on to discuss the details of the wedding (time, date, location). Our venue is about a 45 min drive from the bakery... he mentioned that it would probably end up taking him 1.5 hours to deliver it due to traffic. He seemed a little off so I asked him "oh, does that mean you can't do it?" and he said "no, I can definitely do it, I'm just saying it'll take me longer to get there." It was a weird comment, but I decided to move past it. He then told me that buttercream isn't a thing anymore and people don't like it. Being a wedding planner myself, I know that it is, in fact, a thing... but decided not to argue and he continued to say things like "you must not be well-versed in wedding cakes." I giggled uncomfortably and said "I guess not." He then continued our consultation by saying that if we want a 2-tier cake, he recommends making the base cake 17".... we asked for 12". We're having a wedding for 130 people and only 5 people will probably eat cake (we know our guests). We relayed that information to him and said we didn't need anything massive because it would be a waste, and he responded by going on a rant about how at 12" cake would be so dinky and how it wouldn't make a lasting impression on my guests.. We told him we didn't care and that we wanted a 12" base. Then he proceeded to show us 50 pictures of 4-tiered cakes he's made and kept saying that we're wasting our money if we don't do something like that. We went back and forth on this about 8 times. I'm never the type to be rude or anything like that to anyone, ESPECIALLY an elder, especially during a consultation meeting with a prospective vendor... but I was starting to get visibly agitated. He then asked me what my cake budget was and I said "$200 since I'm not looking for anything crazy". He responded and said "well this will cost $250 and that's not including delivery"... So let's just rewind.. he initially quoted me $150 w/ no delivery charge and then went back on his word. And because I'm still trying to keep my cool, I told him $250+ delivery was okay... I mean $50 isn't breaking the bank so it's fine. He then tells me that I need to get someone to pick up the cake because it would be a waste of time for him to deliver it to us (mind you, he's still scrolling through his phone showing me pictures of the cakes he's made). I reminded him that all of our friends and family live in Maryland and our venue is in Maryland.. so it would be out of the way for any of them to have to drive from MD to VA then back to MD. He scoffed. At this point, I'm ready to get up and leave because I was ready to go off on him.. but again, he keeps telling me things he's reiterated so many times "it's a waste of my time to deliver" "you should add more tiers" "your base tier should be larger" "you're wasting your money" "a small cake isn't going to impress anyone".... and prefaced all of these statements with "I'm only giving you my opinion." We ended up cutting him off and telling him we'd think about it and reach out to him and got the hell out of there. My issue is: if this is truly your opinion.. give it once or twice and then be done with it. I'm a prospective client and I'm telling you what I want..and even with the BS increased quote, I was still willing to pay for it.. If I need it delivered and you offer that service.. then it's your job to do it. If you want to charge a delivery fee because you think it'll take you 1.5 hours to deliver it, I'll pay the d*mn delivery fee.. stop arguing with me and trying to push something on me that I don't want. Do what your client is asking you to do and be done with it. Don't be condescending and rude... just be a normal human being.... I've truly never encountered such a difficult vendor at the initial meeting. I do not recommend this place for wedding cakes. Please save your time and energy and look elsewhere. read more

I have truly enjoyed their castella cakes over and over. They are light and fluffy and spongy and airy so not too sweet and pairs perfectly with a nice hot cup of black or green tea. I am not a fan of their heavy dense cakes, i.e., cinnamon cake or the crumb cake. It's not so much the taste; it actually has a nice flavor. But it's so completely opposite of qualities I prefer in cakes and incompatible with my palette. Those cakes are really really dense and dry and heavy. Your tongue, mouth, and throat begs for moisture once it enters your mouth. Don't try talking or even spitting it out (sorry for being gross) because YOU CAN'T! Instead go for the soft cakes, manju, and assortments of breads. read more

The coffee bing soo was ok as it didn't really have too much ice cream and a little to much ice. The coffee at the bottom is very bitter and not very tasty.The cakes looked very pretty though so hopefully they are good as they look. I bought strawberry jam cookies, and rice cake here. The strawberry jam cookie was good not entirely sweet I like my cookies a bit sweeter. The rice cake had peas, sweet potatoes and something else in it, I did not care for it since I couldn't get over the texture but my coworker loved it. Really wish you could give 1/2 stars. I would give this a 3.5 rating. I went here looking for a bubble tea from somewhere other than Pho Hot. Unfortunately, this was a disappointment. First, at $5.50, it is much more expensive. And there are less choices. Finally, I got the mango one and it definitely has that artificial flavor to it. It wasn't terrible, but I doubt I'd get another one here. I also picked up some of the fried dough twists, and as someone else mentioned, they are delicious. These mostly made up for the bubble tea disappointment. There were several other pastries that looked pretty tasty and reasonably priced and I will go back to try more of those. This Korean bakery is the best one in town to get wedding cakes. Unlike the Shilla bakery, the owner, Mr. Cho will bake the cake himself, deliver, and decorate the cake for you, and very reasonably priced too! My husband and i just got married on 5/7/2011 and our cake was BEAUTIFUL!! Our cake was 3 tiered for 120 people (only $300) and Mr. Cho lent us the fountain for the cake for free too. The first 2 tiers were mocha, and the top one was strawberry for my husband & I to take home. They were delicious, (not too sweet, Korean elders don't like too sweet :D) delivered on time, and BEAUTIFULLY decorated with live flowers we ordered from our florist.
