It's the baseline for a good sub, which isn't saying much. If you remember pre-global Subway here in CT, the portions are close and meats are decent. They have to cover the place in signs saying world famous and all sorts of travel channel junk, mainly because the locals know better and stick to places like Gaetano's Market (in Monroe), which truly does have world famous subs and looks at you funny if you order an 'italian combo.' I would not recommend anything behind the counter, merely the subs for their size and relatively decent pricing. I can't comment on the freshness of the goods, but I've been told things by people that I'd rather not pass on. All I can say for sure is things aren't ordered enough and they often have quite a bit of it behind glass, sitting there. read more

We got in to Danbury around 9:00 looking for a hotel and late dinner options. With everything in the area closed or with locked doors, we saw Nardelli's lights on and went running towards the door. Sadly, we found the door locked and someone mopping the floor inside. Instead of ignoring us, turning his back and acting like we weren't there, like every other place, he opened the door to talk to us. Knowing he'd just give us the response of "we're closed" and shut the door, I was beyond impressed when he actually let us in. He said they were closing up but they'd be happy to make us a quick sandwich for the road. The people behind the counter greeted us with smiles, offered to unpackage their cold cuts and cut fresh bread for our sandwiches. With everything in shambles, no thanks to the latest weather disasters, it was so nice for Nardelli's to not only open late for us but serve us one amazing sandwich. I don't stop by Nardelli's too often, regardless of how close it is to my place, but when I do, I'm always satisfied (and full) with what I order. Nardelli's prides itself with its huge sandwiches and quick and friendly customer service, which always seems to be top notch every time. I'm a fan of the staff double checking if you want everything included in "the works" or just partial of what it is. I know a lot of people in previous reviews complained about hot sauce being added to their sandwich, but personally, I think it's great. Nothing like a little tangy/spicy sauce to kick up an Italian combo grinder. I normally go with a full grinder when I come in, but I had a rather large breakfast and a large coffee earlier that morning, so it seemed a little overwhelming. I settled with the half Italian grinder instead with some chips. I've had the tortellini salad before which is pretty delicious and simple, the best kind. From ordering, to paying, to leaving, I was in and out in within around five minutes. No complaints. The Italian combo was delicious and filling as always. I also love how they don't assault the sandwich with hot sauce, it's just enough for it to be significant, but not too much to the point that it's all you taste. It's enjoyable. I'll be back again when I start having withdrawals. read more

I do not see what all the fuss is all about. I've tried this place a few times and every time I am disappointed. This whole concept of pre-making the sandwich fillings without the bread and keeping them in the fridge causes a lot of problems. First of all they make them too small so when they place it on the sandwich there is a ton of extra bread. Second, this causes everything to get soggy from the sauces and the cheese. This is especially bad for things like their breaded chicken. The actual preparation of the sandwiches is just as bad. If you get your sandwich warm, it's microwaved, and this makes the sandwiches even more soggy and chewy. Gross. And this whole pre-made "everything" concoction makes the vegetables soft and not crisp like they should be. And finally, they have McDonald's level employees making their sandwiches who have no clue how much of each ingredient should be put on the sandwich. What started out as a nice local sandwich shop has turned into a chain that I would categorize as a Subway with a few poorly executed frills. Even the no-name chips they sell are gross. read more

Absolutely fresh and clean atmosphere. Beautiful presentation of all the different offerings is second to none. The soups and Salads are equally awesome. The sandwiches are really first class and the Italian Sub is an award winner. I was equally surprised at the wonderful service from the friendly staff who takes real pride in making sure you are pleased! I'm going to refer to Jonathan S and his review of the pre-made sandwich concept Nardellis employs. Basically it makes for a sub par sandwich and really has me questioning returning. Also, that microwaves are used to heat sandwiches adds an extra pause to my consideration of returning especially that management reached out in response to his review and pretty much ok'd it's use as a company policy. Toaster ovens. Toaster ovens. Toaster ovens. I was steered here by a good friend who swears by this place and recently had his daughters engagement party catered to rave reviews. Granted it was platters of hot dishes like chicken marsala and cold cut platters but there was a long sub involved. Sooo, yea. (This was for a phoned in order but that shouldn't impact how wrong my sandwich was.) My Bacon Mushroom Chicken would probably have been delicious if I got what I ordered. The first two words of the sandwich were very obviously absent, which is ridiculously unacceptable given the name of the damn sandwich. I find this very strange considering the pre-made model this store uses and the fact I saw the bowl of bacon mushroom chicken behind the glass display. Its clearly in one of my Yelp photos and I see bacon but oddly no mushrooms. So that is nonsense for a deli with such a good rep. They also offer panini options which I asked for and did not receive which another photo shows. But the guy on the phone even asked if I wanted a half or whole panini so somewhere between my lips and his pencil my order got screwed up. Or the sandwich maker had his own ideas. The "diced veggies" were tasty but the ratio of meat to bread to veg to lettuce is way out of whack. The giant sub was good (not what i ordered though) but cavernous when my tiny piece of soggy chicken was placed in it, so whats the obvious? Fill it with more chicken? Nah, more veg. Not good. My wife says the chicken caesar salad was good except for the chicken. 0-2 on the meats. I got a fantastic cannoli. The second star is for the friendliness of the staff (not their order completion skills) and the cleanliness and setup of the store. I also like the bell ringing when a tip is left and the collective "thank yous" given by the staff. Ive only seen that one other time and I appreciate my tip being acknowledged. I will give them another try but will think hard about crafting a sub around Nardellis sandwich creating shortcomings. I'm sure I can wring a good sandwich out of this place, they have all the hallmarks of a great store but a few glaring flaws in the art of sandwich making. read more

Went to the new store in Danbury and was very surprised that my Chicken Parm Grinder was microwaved (both chicken & bread) and not baked. It tasted rubbery, bland and soggy. It is a sin to microwave chicken and the bread. Why isn't it baked the traditional way? I don't know if I will be going back... Very unhappy about my experience there.. The owner told me that they are too busy to do that - bad answer!!! IT SHOULD BE DONE THE RIGHT WAY!!! I was just very surprised that an establishment like Nardellis, "Best Grinders in the state" would microwave the insides of ALL hot grinders - just seems strange! There is nothing like a properly cooked, oven toasted Chicken parm grinder (or any type, meatball etc), wish you did it the proper way. I will not be going back! read more

Have tried many places off of 84 travelling from NH to NJ. Feel like we have pulled off at every exit along the way. Pass through Waterbury and see the Nardelli's every time and the Danbury location is just very convenient to get off and back on. Sandwiches/subs were good. The bread was excellent. We didn't test them much as we had some very pedestrian orders. Next time I would want to try the way that they recommend fixing up a sandwich rather than eating the stripped down versions that my kids insist on. I would like to try the eggplant parm. Need to do some more reading on Yelp before the next visit. read more

Excellent grinders! Their staple Italian Combo is very tasty and even the half is hugely portioned with plenty of meat. Their sausage and peppers grinder is also very good, to the point that you forget you are eating a sandwich. The bread they use is fantastic as well. The locale is inviting, with many choices on the board and many specials sprinkled about. We also tried their cheesecake burrito dessert but the ratio was off, having far more tortilla than it needed, instead of more cheesecake. I will make this a regular place to visit, because with 7 bucks or so, you can fill your belly with some good stuff indeed. read more

I ate at Nardelli's with a few friends two weekends in a row and had a great experience both times. The food is delicious and the service is quick. Our group tried the prosciutto hot pepper chicken, meatball parm, and other grinders, as well as lasagna, various salads, and desserts. Everything we tried was good. And the half-size grinder is good sized, even for a big appetite. I'll definitely go back if I find myself in the area again. read more

First time being to Nardelli's and the workers were very nice and restaurant was super clean . Wide variety of meats to select from took me a good 5 min to actually decide because it all looked so good , highly recommend the lasagna . Super delicious and an overall great dining experience! First visit roast beef grinder, pretty good but not amazing. Lots of beef, but kind of bland Their own diet root beer was ok, but not A & W. In business since 1922, which is admirable. VERY clean, including bathroom. I would eat here again, but would not make a special trip. read more

A very nice and clean little Italian deli with a rather large selection of grinders to choose from. My eggplant parm was wonderful, it could have used a dash of sauce though. The tri color tort salad was good as were the chocolate cookies. I would have liked to see more dessert choices and possibly a hot pasta offering other then lasagna but otherwise it's a nice place to get lunch. read more

I came up from Raleigh, NC to visit a friend. Fortuitously stop by this place to grab a sandwich, BEST PASTRAMI SANDWICH EVER, just my humble opinion. Totally takes me back to Flushing, NY--ole so many moons ago---for a while there. That was by far one of the worst, no actually the worst sandwich I've ever ingested. WTH are people rating with positive reviews, what are you use to! I was terribly sad eating it to the point that I discarded it. The chicken cutlets are pathetic and questionable, the chipotle chicken was tasteless, rubbery and drowned in 2 giant pieces of bread. Bottom line, it's fast food and a few notches below Subways. Have low expectations if you venture in. I usually eat here twice a week as I work in the area. I have never had a bad experience or meal. Every employee is super friendly and the place is spotless. The only problem you will have is trying to decide what to eat because everything is delicious. You must try the buckeyes for a snack. read more

I also think people are just plain happier when they know there's a good meal coming their way! For one set of meetings, I ordered Plan #4 -- grinders, salads, cookies, soda. For another, I ordered some ziti, salad, bread, cookies, soda. People loved both! I even called Nardelli's between meeting days to ask for some adjustments (fewer of the bologna sandwiches, more turkey, etc.), and they were happy to make the changes for the next day. Their service is responsive. They also deliver! I can't really ask for much more. read more

I always drive by this place and was curious to try. I walked in and wanted a simple wrap. I asked for pepper turkey and they said they don't haven "pepper turkey". Then I said ok let me have chicken with Muenster cheese, and they said they don't have "Muenster". Then I asked for spinach, they say they don't have spinach lol. Ok... so I settled for a grilled chicken provolone wrap with lettuce and tomato. The wrap falls apart instantly and the chicken was very chewy and firm. As if it was previously frozen. Walked in, looked at the food, and walked out. The fillings for the grinders are pre-made and then put on the roll to heat up. Unfortunately, that makes stuffings like the pastrami and cheese just look like congealed messes. Didn't look appetizing at all. Placed an order on DoorDash for a prosciutto cold sandwich. Received a chicken cutlet sandwich made a complaint on DoorDash and they issued a redelivery. I once again received the incorrect sandwich. Upon reviewing their menu it appears they were sending me a prosciutto hot pepper chicken sandwich which is a completely different item from a completely different part of their menu. It is not only difficult having to order out online it is an extreme inconvenience to have received the incorrect item after waiting over an hour. It would be wise to know the difference between a hot and cold sandwich and learn your menu. Money and time wasted read more
