Flew in and walked straight to the counter to pick up my car. These smaller airports don't have the Emerald Isle, rather they have a few keys behind the counter and tell you what they have for you to select from. The guy working the counter seemed to be rushed and not very personable with his approach to customer service. Then when I got outside to get in my car, the folks working the lot had renters bringing cars back stacked up in front of the cars that were being picked up, so a few of us had to wait a while for them to jockey cars around to free up the aisle so I could get out. During this process, I watched the lot guy hit another car and bend the bumpers on both, I sure hope they don't try to blame that on the previous renter! I just rented an "Exotic class" Mercedes "S" class car, paying about $250/day, and had problems with the tires which did not stay inflated. The National roadside assistance (seemingly outsourced to a company called Urgently) was useless. We almost froze to death (13 degrees outside). They said they were dispatching a tow truck and uber for us. Neither arrived. We called back numerous times. Useless. Then they said National was "taking ove the case" and I should call the local office at Westchester County Airport but they NEVER ANSWERED THE PHONE despite multiple attempts and trying all of the options provided. Back on the phone with various general phone numbers for National. Hard to get people and, most don't speak English well and seem to have little capability to do anything. I have always liked National because of their staff but this experience is the opposite. Their chat service doesn't work at night! What could be cheaper than manning a chat service at night? And they don't do it. I will never ever rent an expensive car like this through National. They don't have the capacity to manage it. I've always found this location of National Car Rental goes above and beyond. On slower days, I've had them drive the car up to the curb right outside the door for practically door to door service. On busier days I retrieve my car from the lot but they always give me the spot number so that the car is easy to find. As someone else mentioned, it's a small airport and they don't have the usual Emerald aisle, but they always give me several options for rentals, most of them being brand new. Most recently, they offered me a brand new 2025 minivan (in December of '24). I didn't need anything quite so big so opted for a car but it was a nice gesture none-the-less. If you arrive late in the evening, options might be somewhat limited as they're a busy spot but they'll do their best to get you something great. The workers are always kind and helpful. I had originally scheduled my return for 0800 10/4. I saw onlin that there was an earlier flight for me to get home so I got to the White Plains/Westchester airport early (~0700). I parked the car in parking slot 95, locked the car and proceeded to the National desk. No one was there but there was a drop box for the key fob. I put the key fob there and went on to the gate. After 4 calls to National, still no receipt for the rental (it's now 1900 EST). With my expense report due tonight (Saturday 10/4), I'm going to have to sit on a charge for 2 additional weeks because of this experience. I've used National for many years but with a small airport/National desk, I think it's risky at best. Very disappointing. And, by the way, calling the Customer Service line (844/370-9813) is a waste of time. All they will offer to do is send a "high priority" message to the rental location. read more

Had an amazing experience with renting from National Rental Car @ HPN. Picked up on a Friday night, dropped off on a Monday night. Jeremy checked me in and took *really* good care of me. I think he was thin on vehicles, so he ended up upgrading me to a really nice car... at least a couple classes of vehicle nicer than what I had booked. He also acknowledged me as an Emerald Club customer, actually thanking me for my business and honoring my corporate rate that I had booked. He was super professional in how he spoke and looked, and was refreshingly genuine in his interactions with me. Shortly after we returned the vehicle - my wife had realized she had forgotten her coffee mug in the car... and when I brought it to the attention of the guys at the HPN National Rental counter....they hustled to find it and bring it to me. They literally made me feel like my problem was the most important thing they had to solve at that moment... despite the fact they were somewhat busy with other business! Great service is a dying trend in the hospitality business ... but not so with National... especially at its Westchester Airport location. And that's why the next time I need a rental car - anywhere I'm at - I'm choosing National. read more

COVID Christmas 2020 we were looking for an SUV that would give our group a shot at getting home for Christmas while avoiding the airport. We were hoping to do the drive in one shot to minimize exposure risk, and needed a comfortable enough car to let drivers rest. Westchester Airport is pretty inconvenient to get to from the city and after getting stuck in traffic in Downtown Brooklyn we arrived at the counter maybe an hour late. We didn't call because the website states that they provide a grace period. When we arrived, we were told that our car had been given to someone else. They then told the same story to the three other customers who arrived after us also having reserved SUVs...a pattern emerges. They would not help us get the right size car at another location even though we offered to drive to one of the three other airports in NY metro. There was no other open counter and we felt we were out of options, so we agreed to take a "full size" sedan. When we got out to the parking lot, the car they gave us was a midsize, but we agreed as a group to make do. We split up so we could get the car we drove in back to the city, and when we met back up with our group, it turned out that the other drivers had had a problem with the key to the first sedan and asked for a replacement key. Instead they were told they would get a different car but same model, but instead were given a subcompact. So we went from having an SUV to a subcompact at the same price. We made the decision not to drive home for Christmas. Haven't seen our parents for a year. They don't have 24 hour customer service (!) and they don't let you contact the location you rent from (!!) so I had to wait until the next day to talk to someone. I was pretty upset at this point and got someone to agree to refund all our money and let me return to the location in downtown Brooklyn. It's two months later and I only ever received a partial refund. This is the worst car rental experience of my life. Literally spoiled Christmas during the pandemic. The worst part of all is they cheated us and everyone else in that airport and they apparently get away with it. You can't even call them about it. Let's get the obvious out of the way. Westchester is a very small airport, so unlike big airports the rental car pickup area is just walking distance from the airport. And there is only one parking lot that all rental car companies share as pickup area. And rental car companies don't have much choice here. National car in this location don't have best cars but they do have some nice ones from time to time. Especially if you are elite, you get much nicer ones and you can even ask them switch if you see something you like. They are usually very accommodating. Also their customer service is really good. Yesterday I was supposed to be picking up my car at 9 pm but my flight got delayed for more than 3 hours and by the time I landed it was around 12.20 am. The agent who would usually leave at 11.30 pm waited for us to arrive. And a tip, if you are arriving later because of flight delays, it's useful to call and let them know. But if you search for their phone number in Internet and in the national car website, it only points you to 800 number. But actual direct number is 9149469080. read more

Great service and car selection! I upgraded to the armada after driving it for a few days realized I really didn't like it, they swapped me out to the expedition for free! Way better ride. I don't know if the armadas tires were overinflated or what but it felt like it was going to bounce us right off the road. read more

This review is technically a 2.5. They get the A-OK because I had no issues with my car and the selected vehicle wasn't the worst. Here are some additional points: Pros: -Small airport so the car lot is not too far at all (no buses or trolleys) -Super friendly staff from the counter to the check-in process Semi-Cons: - The airport is so small that there is no shuttle and your car rental pick-up has to be taken care of at a counter near baggage claim -There is no true "Emerald Club" selection process. You get the car that they assign you. While I am sure you can ask what is there and choose with the clerk, nothing beats exiting the bus ahead of others and walking to the car of your (limited) choice -The lot is a stones throw away from the airport and there is no shuttle. Did I mention there is no shuttle?? I can imagine that this would be an absolute nightmare during inclement weather (rain, wind, sleet, snow, hail, extreme heat, etc.). Since the lot is so close to the airport, you are forced to drag your bag(s) down an uncovered walkway and to a flat lot of cars. I didn't mind initially but when I was returning my car, I was running late from a business meeting and didn't appreciate having to drag my bags down the street in heels! -When picking up the car, the person at the counter failed to tell me that there is no gas station anywhere near the area. I had to return the car minus some petro and had to pay the additional fee for them to re-gas Another small point that is outside of their control is the fact that when coming for the first time and at night, the route to the nearest highway can be a little confusing. Be careful trying to rent a car here. We were stranded in the area after our car broke down and this was the only car rental company listed as open at 8pm on a Saturday. If you call the number that shows up on google maps (844-370-9813), you reach a call center. I talked to someone who checked that there were cars available at this location, provided me with an email confirmation of my car reservation, and provided me with a phone number of the branch to confirm that a car was available before we took an uber to the airport. I called the number I was given (which actually was just the number of the call center again) and was assured that a car was available. When we arrived, we were told that there were no cars available, and that we were given an incorrect phone number for the branch and a confirmation email does not guarantee a car. The employee on shift was brusque and unhelpful. Although I appreciate that it might not be his fault that the call center will reserve cars that don't exist, he was unwilling to double-check or help us in any way. I frequent this location more often than any other. I'm also an EC Elite member but I guess my experience has been much different than other reviewers. I find this location to be one of the best for service and vehicle selection. Very rarely are they so low on inventory that they provide an undesirable vehicle. On more than one occasion, they have gone out of their way for me to find me a better car that has not made it to their lot just yet. It's not often that I rave about customer service at a car rental, but we had such a fantastic experience last week when renting a minivan from National at Westchester airport that it's well worth giving Justin Miller a huge THANK YOU for going above and beyond! He was friendly, polite, and helped get the car pulled up to the front doors so my parents could easily get in. I'd give more stars if I could. The staff who received the car when we returned it were friendly as well. Justin helped make get our trip to Westchester off on the right foot and we really appreciated his superb level of customer service. The car was clean and in great shape to boot. Arrived around 11:10 PM and being EC Elite, I was sure I would be in my rental car in 5 minutes. I really needed some rest. There was 1 person being helped by 2 employees. I waited (with 3 other customers behind me) for at least 10 minutes before the second employee finally helped me. I got an unfriendly response when I asked where the cars were parked. Would it kill her to be pleasant? I just wanted to get out of there so I took the keys and rental folder. I get to the lot and noticed that the car's space number was not written down on the rental folder. I found the car eventually by clicking the unlock button of the key fob. Joy! read more

Always a problem with this place, either the person behind the counter takes 20 minutes to process my rental (It should be under 5, I rent 60 times a year with National) or I get charged random fees after I've returned the vehicle and the receipt has been printed. I am very disappointed, when I learnt that the person at the counter charged my credit card for an extra hour without even mentioning that he is charging . I was right in front of him while he is closing the contract for about 10 mins, he never mentioned a word about the extra charge.
