Came in to this location after hearing so many people rave about the quality of the bagels to find myself only slightly impressed. We weren't greeted at all and stood at the register to order for a couple of minutes waiting. I definitely did not feel a warm and fuzzy vibe from a business opening a new location trying to capture business. Found the bagel quality to be lacking and the Everything Bagel had barely any seasoning on it. My girlfriends bagel was missing many ingredients and they almost charged her for double meat until I spotted it on the order when she simply asked for no Pastrami from the combo sandwich. I will certainly come again and my hope is to update my review. read more

A hidden surprise in the Maryland suburbs of DC, Neal's Bagels are handmade, boiled, baked in the time honored method. I am a native of Manhattan where there are zillions of bagel joints, including the venerable H&H on Broadway. I used to go there every Saturday night for my bagels to eat as I read my Sunday NY Times. Not the friendliest staff in the world, but I really just wanted a bagel, so it is what it is. I briefly scrolled through the reviews before leaving this one, and I genuinely don't understand how no one is commenting on the fact that a bagel is $1.75, but with cream cheese, the most basic of basic bagel toppings, it comes out to $4.50?! $1.75 for the bagel and $2.75 for cream cheese?? I quickly realized why they charge so much for their cream cheese--they put enough on one bagel for three or four bagels. It was honestly disgusting having to dig with a napkin into the globs of cream cheese to remove it to make the bagel edible (I had already left and didn't think I'd need a knife for a pre sliced and creamed bagel). Overall, terrible experience and will not be back. I'll drive a little further and wait a little longer for Bethesda bagels. read more

TERRIBLE! I ordered a regular coffee with my meal. The cashier told me to wait 5 minutes they're still making it. Then I witnessed ( I think was the restaurant owner) putting coffee into a large plastic tub, heating it up in the microwave, then dumping it into the lg commercial coffee urn. When I asked cashier about that, he told me they make a large amount of coffee in the morning and they heat it up during the day! Absolutely disgusting! HEATING UP OLD COFFEE isn't fresh coffee! Not to mention that putting plastic in the microwave to heat food is a cancer causing carcinogen. Shame on you! $7.50 for a tastless bagel and sm. stale coffee. Will NEVER RETURN! read more

Neal's is in my neighborhood so it's convenient. But it's not my first choice when I want a good bagel sandwich. I usually just get a toasted bagel with cream cheese here. The actual bagels here are good. They are a good amount of chew. But I noticed that they don't have as many bagel options as they used to. And whenever you order a bagel sandwich (hot or cold) they like to use day old bagels, not the fresh ones. For breakfast sandwiches, they make all the eggs and meat in the microwave whereas other shops use an actual griddle or cook top, using fresher ingredients. For cold sandwiches, they don't use fresh lettuce, tomato or onions. Every time I have ordered something with a "fresh" ingredients, it's either been bad or on the verge of going bad. Prices are standard. Service is inconsistent. The owner doesn't have a good attitude and always is yelling at the employees which creates a hostile environment in which affects how the employees handle the customers. read more

My Nova Scotia lox and cream cheese was good, but didn't make me say MmMmMm. The amount of lox I got was pretty small and it was mainly on one side of my bagel. I think I actually got more tomato slices than lox. The cream cheese was also lacking as well. It seemed like they were in such a rush to make the sandwich that it was poorly spread on there. The closing of Bagel City continues to crush my soul. Came to Neal's Bagels in search of decent bagels in the area. I will not be returning though, because the quality of their bagels isn't enough to offset their poor customer service. I felt unwelcome in a way I hadn't before ever in my life upon entering the store: all employees were intentionally looking down and starting up conversations among themselves as I tried to say hello and indicate that I was the only person in line to pick up my order. After standing/waiting for ten minutes, someone who delivers food for Neal's entered, stepped directly in front of me, tapped the cashier's counter, then the cashier filled that delivery person's order immediately. The eye contact the cashier made with me before filling their order was enough for me to realize that delivery orders take priority over your order, whether or not you placed it in advance. I do not know why there's a snooty, arrogant attitude among the employees at Neal's. If they don't change their style or at least offer an explanation for their behavior, as a customer I eventually assume that I am being judged for my physical appearance. Their desserts are pretty good but anything savory is just meh, such as their knishes and potato salad. Prices are fair here for what you get. I'm back to eating frozen Lender's if that helps you discern my level of dissatisfaction with this (bagel) place. read more

I purchased a bag of "day old bagels" yesterday, so the bagel in this picture is 2 days old. This bagel, once toasted with their vegetable cream cheese is DELICIOUS!!! Plus! Both sides of the bagel has sesame seeds on it which I think is EXCELLENT. I happen to live alone but with toppings on both sides, everyone wins should they choose to share. My gym is directly behind Neal's, so it's been a go-to, post-workout spot for years now. The staff consists of Neal himself, his wife, and usually a bunch of teenagers and young twenty-somethings taking any and all orders, from my very basic post-workout onion bagel, lightly toasted, with double turkey and light butter, to bags of bagels for a group of hungover jocks recovering from a night's prior White Claw induced rager. The service is generally fast and they have a variety of options, from bagels and deli meats, to Kosher options as well. Small bar with a few stools to eat inside, near the door. Small table with a few surrounding chairs right outside the door if it's a nice day. read more

My bagel pedigree is that for years my wife and I would drive all the way to New York to go to H and H bagels and buy 4 dozen custom bagels, then considered by many to be the world's best. My first trip to the new location. I've been going to Neal's for as long as I can remember at the original location. It was homey and very "Bagel Deli-ish." I wasn't excited about the move but decided to check it out. I was less than pleased. Are there new owners too? The change is very commercial and boring - and I hate the location. I missed being able to see what they had ready, the cookies and noshes. I'd expect a bagel place to be ready to go on what should be a busy Saturday morning. Despite at least 6 people working, they seemed backed up. At 9AM they were out of Salt, out of Everything, and it was going to be a 20 minute wait before they'd be ready. And I know they haven't been busy this morning - none of my bagels are warm (which is the best part). The bagels are still yummy but I won't go out of my way next time. So sad and disappointed. Great mom and pop bagel shop - this place knows its bagels. Their breakfast sandwiches are delicious. There is a small bakery with tasty treats mist everything served it freshly made in house. The only reason its not a 5 star is that the place is tiny, really tiny. It only has 4-5 barstools in the place, so it is a pretty tough to grab a seat and eat in the shop. Even the waiting area (really is designated area) space is scarce. I would have given it a 4.5 if I could. read more

The first time I went there, I was greeted by a very friendly man who took the extra time to help me choose the right bagel and also did a great job of preparing it for me. However, that first visit was the last great experience I had there. I went there today and there was an older woman working behind the desk who was exactly the opposite. I asked for a bagel with cream cheese on the side. She over-toasted my bagel and put the cream cheese on the bagel. As I was she made the mistake, I restated my request to put the cream cheese on the side, and she said I "never told her that" and then she offered to make me another bagel. She never gave me another bagel and continued to serve other people in line. I went to Neal's based on a coworker recommendation and the first time there was amazing, but there needs to be a stronger commitment to maintaining the same level of quality and customer service for every customer. read more

I called Neal's to let them know what happened. The girl that answered the phone appeared to empathize with my frustration, she put me on hold to let people know. On our way up north for some skiing this past weekend, we decided to not only stock up on delish bagels, but some baked goods as well. Seeing as they make NY traditional black-and-whites here, we decided to give those goodies a whirl. Different from what you'd get in Manhattan - but not in a bad way. The frosting is thinner and more liquidy, instead of a hard, caked on frosting. The cookie is also more dense than the usual fluffy cake-like consistency. This place seems good from the outside because it is one of the only bagel stores in the area. I am from New Jersey originally and have seen and tasted what a real bagel is. I am not comparing the two because bagels in New Jersey and New York are just naturally better but the lack of effort by Neals to make their bagel sandwiches is what brought me to do this review. Premier bagel shops will have real eggs and bacon and grill them because they care about their food. Neals is too lazy to even do that as they use liquid egg that they microwave for their egg and store bought bacon that they also microwave. I would not have done this review if I did not think that Neal's was putting more effort into their product for the customers. I used to frequent this every day and get the same exact sandwich. So this is really upsetting to me what happened today. My mom also comes here 3-5x a week for a long time too. I have never once had a bad meal until this Friday. I had gotten home. Which is a 5 mins drive like I dk every other morning. And the bagel was rock hard and it cracked my upper tooth. I went in Sunday to show the pics to the woman. And she was sorry and then the owner asked me what time I Came and then proceeded to tell me it was Strange. He didn't say sorry and didn't care. I was only here once. Got a honey whole wheat bagel toasted with chicken salad. The guy asked if I wanted onions, tomatoes, or lettuce and I replied no. Normally the chicken salad holds its own. However I thought I was kind of dry. Probably should have added mayor or something to give it a little more moisture as well as flavor. The bagel was good. Giving it 4 stars since it was my first time there. I'll have to try some other things before I knock it down or up a star :-) read more
