I straight up adore Negril, and this Negril in particular. I love everything about it, from the fried plantains to the cranky lady behind the counter. Everything, and I do mean everything, I've had at Negril has been good, but for lunch I find it is really, really hard to beat the Jerk Chicken sandwich. For $3.25-- yes, you did read that right-- you get a soft sweet roll piled with excellent jerk chicken, lettuce and sauce. It is happiness wrapped in a foil package, and it leaves you money left over for a Kola Champagne to wash it down. If you want to upscale it a bit you can never go wrong with their oxtail, goat (roti or curry) or escoveitched red snapper. Their plantains are freshly cooked and plentiful to an order, and their beef patties are warm and spicy. The line is *always* out the door at lunchtime, and with good reason-- the food rocks. The service is counter, but they do have a cute little dining room available. Don't get mad if the cashier is cranky, she's been that way for years, and if sometimes you have to ask the counter folks if your order is ready, well, that's just how it can be. If you're taking to go they've just opened a separate "to go only" store two doors down for basics like sandwiches, beef patties, plantains and cookies, making the experience somewhat more efficient. read more

It seems like the entrees got mixed reviews, but the jerk chicken sandwich won everybody's heart. I can definitely see why. I love jerk chicken and I LOVE a nice kick of heat. Unfortunately, the jerk chicken barely had any spice, so they should work on that because it's a necessity! Other than that, the butter roll was SUPER soft and drool worthy, and the chicken thigh was moist and well seasoned (other than the spice!). I've been a regular carry-out diner here for years. Since the pandemic, my experience has been less satisfying. Today I stopped by to order food and was told that my order would be about 20 min. since I ordered the curried shrimp. I was ok with this since I walked there on such a nice day. The problem was that I was trying to follow their posted rules limiting the number of people in the place to no more than "6". I waited outside as folks were randomly walking up and more than 6 were present inside. While I followed the rules, others jumped ahead of me so I kept waiting. This is a tough one. I was 10 years old when I first ate the Jerk Chicken sandwich and from that point on- my life changed. Now, age 24- I had a jerk chicken sandwich after not having eaten it for well over 9 years. It tastes the SAME EXACT which perplexed me. I've tried the curry and rice. Honestly this isn't truly authentic food. It's become commercialized. Everything is obviously pre cooked and not everything is freshly made. How can I be sure? My taste buds are out of this world. Parking sucks. The place is pretty open and clean inside... there are two tables in the room with the order counter and then a side room with many more tables. The Beau and I both ordered jerk chicken sandwiches... for some stupid reason I was expecting a chicken breast seared with jerk seasoning... but instead got many "pulled" pieces of chicken, that, I'm not even sure *were* chicken (I've never seen that much dark meat on a chicken before). Now - this is really good yard eatin'. Negril is definitely the spot for authentic Jamaican food. They have all the traditional meals - like beef patties, curry goat, oxtail, jerk chicken, fricasseed chicken, curry chicken, stewed chicken, rotis snapper...etc. They also have excellent carrot and banana cakes, and island juices. However, there is no ackee and salt/cod fish here :-( The prices for their entrees range from $8 - $11; and $2 for the patties and cake slices - which are pretty reasonable comparably. Their portion sizes are also pretty large - so "no problem" there. While most people seem to order out, they also have a side dining area - which is very nice for small parties. The fruit punch was just the right sweetness. I appreciate the great customer service I receive each visit. Parking can be problematic. The GPS address also doesn't lead you directly to the restaurant. You will see the bank parking lot. Enter that parking lot and park (if it's after bank hours). While trying to order during this my FIRST visit, another patron was breathing down my neck having cut the line and repeatedly tapping her fingers, sitting in my lap, and breathing hard stating that I was keeping her from picking up her phone order. The establishment should put a sign up for where pickup orders are too be received. It is highly unprofessional for one to be in line ordering and having others walk in from the street, right up to you, and then rush you from the line so they can pick up an order. Silver spring always has the best food spots so I just seen this on yelp and was in the mood for Caribbean food. I ordered the jerk chicken with rice & cabbage and coco bread. They keep the special hot sauce in capsules, I think thats what it's called but yeah I was pressed cause other places they just have the bottle and you would have to open your food to pour some in. While waiting, I noticed an Asian lady working there not really sure if she Asian but she was kind of rude to the people that were picking up assuming they didn't pay already I guess. I just minded my business, it was my first time here. As soon as I got in the car I set myself up for victory. I love the fact they give you the seasonings on the side but I just poured everything in so freakin bomb. I didn't like the cabbage it was dry and I had better coco bread before this was not soft enough for me. But they give you so much chicken and rice I had to eat it in two different settings. Sad cuz I am a repeater. My order from DoorDash today was very disappointing. Goat curry was straight floating in salt curry soup. It's not even thick or properly flavored. Just straight nasty. Compared to the other location in NW DC I would say this location has the better food in terms of entrees and the NW location has way better soup. The coco bread was very buttery and soft. They changed the lettuce from iceberg to a mixed lettuce, which I think is better. Easily and hands down one of the best beef patties in the DMV. I'd put this place up against Muffin Man and Just Jerk or any other competitor in the beef patty showdown. Warm, flaky, spicy beef, falls apart and melts in your mouth goodness. Coco bread is made fresh on site as well, and sandwiched between the two is a delectable treat worthy of notoriety. Their main dishes are great as well. The Jerk chicken is good, and comes with a side of cabbage and rice and peas. I order a side of Ox Tail sauce to drizzle over my rice and peas and it hits every single time. Also comes with a side of curry and peppa sauce that hits the mark. This place used to be the joint. Negril opened a couple of places. They had one in Laurel and one in Germantown but they both failed so this is the one left standing. In around 2005, this was really good and the only Jamaican restaurant that beat the other two. One was called Pineapple and I forgot the other one.They had Jamaicans working and making the food at this Negril place until the late 2007 I noticed a change in the quality of their jerk chicken and peas and rice and also noticed Latin workers making the food. That's a no no. If you really want to say "HEY MON" this is not the place. Try Island Market and Island Pride. Those two are same owners but hands down the best real authentic Jamaican restaurant in the Montgomery County, MD. I'm not even Jamaican and even I know that. Island Market is like a hole in the wall grocery store and that's when they first started out before Island Pride. Their jerk chicken, curry chicken, beef stew etc. are 10 times better than Negril. The chicken is tender and not too dry and you can taste the spices and smell the aroma! This is the "HEY MON" great food. This is located behind a strip mall across from Food Lion in Gaithersburg. Island Pride replaced a Jamaican restaurant originally called Caribbean Feast. Their location is across from Montgomery College Rockville. They're next to a Cuban restaurant and very close to Seafood Cameron's. This is hands down the best Jamaican restaurant I have eaten. Negril is nowhere even close. Island Pride opened after Island Market. I'm Chinese and I love Jamaican food. I'm open minded and love to try different ethnic food. Once you've tried several restaurants and even talk to real Jamaicans, they will tell you ISLAND MARKET AND ISLAND PRIDE MON! read more

This place is GROSS! Went in today for brown stew chicken, and came home to brown rat, pigeon, or idk. It was not chicken. It was tough and the skin was loose and slippery and not intact.
