I met a friend for lunch here today and the food was amazing! I had their House Club Sandwich and corn beef stew. The sandwich was awesome with a ton of meats and cheese and was more like two whole sandwiches. The corn beef stew is some thing everyone should try. It was amazing. Any way it was a ton of great food. The server was friendly and we talked quite a bit about the locale and random stuff at our table with him. they lost a regular customer today. they nickel and dimed us to a $50 bill for breakfast for 2 people. the food was fine but the gouging us for not even wanted everything the dish included was not acceptable. I had an amazing breakfast at Marlin's! The food was fresh, hot, and delicious. The breakfast potatoes were crisp and not too salty and the eggs Benedict supreme had lovely fresh veggies under a tasty sauce with two perfectly cooked eggs. It's only a weekend special, though. The servers were attentive and patient and wore masks and gave carafes of water and coffee for our table. It got busier as we sat there but there was plenty of seating. Came here today for the first time while my mom was in town (college student here), great experience! The market is such an interesting older vibe, lots of intriguing decor, with tons of candy and beverage options. We were seated quickly and our server paid us a ton of attention, even stopping to talk about the history of the diner and getting us copies of the neighborhood newsletter! Chicken and waffles were delicious, and the maple syrup is definitely worth the upcharge, and the pancakes were some of the best I've had. Just delicious. It's nice to finally eat breakfast at a place that knows how to make scrambled eggs. They're usually cooked beyond all recognition. Not here. Marlins is a little cafe that is tucked into a residential neighborhood that looks like the old-fashioned General store from the outside. I wanted to try the corned beef hash, as it seems to be a favorite. It didn't take long to cook it up. Maybe under 7 minutes and the place was pretty packed. Fast for how crowded it was. The food looked good. I still don't understand, it looked fresh, and well plated. When tasted, it was very bland. There was little to no flavor in the dish. You could see it was fresh, but everything tasted the same. What ever the way they prepare the food, it just didn't taste as it should. Everything else was fine. I've never tasted a plate that looked fresh, but didn't taste the way it looked. I guess this place is not for me. I would like to have flavor in my food when I eat it. Maybe you will have better luck. For me, not something I would want to try again. read more

This house in the York neighborhood was converted into a corner quickie market and snack bar. It's known and frequented by locals who walk, bike or bus here to meet up with friends for conversation. Pros -Laid-back, casual neighborhood diner/market -If you want something to drink, you can help yourself to items in the market, and your server will add it to your bill. (I loved being able to select a Coca Cola instead of Pepsi, but it's nice to know that both choices exist.) -Nice selection of brunch, lunch and dinner items on the menu. There are also daily specials on the board. -Small private parking lot and lots of free street parking available. -There is indoor and outdoor seating. Booths, tables and counter seating accomodates different group sizes. -ATM on site. Cash and some credit cards accepted. -Bus stop across the street. Cons -Customer service is slow and somewhat lacking. (Do you seat yourself? Do you pay at the table or go to the register? Is one server really enough to handle every full table on a holiday weekend?) -Food is somewhat expensive based on comparitive value with other establishments. (Fries were too salty. Skimpy on the hollandaise sauce. Side potatoes with brunch were completely bland.) -Doesn't accept American Express. I like how down to earth this place is, but I wouldn't bring out of town guests here. It's a good place for a quick, decent meal that won't break the bank. read more

Welp, we wouldn't know, because we left. Was really looking forward to eating here, the food looks good and the atmosphere is cute. However, we left after 30 minutes. The waiter was incredibly rude when I asked for a menu. No one is paying attention to who sits down and in what order. We waited 25 minutes, no coffee, waters or menus, then they go to tables that got there long after we did. I alerted the waiter to this and he literally said, he didn't care and that he only subbed in the weekends and don't have a way to know who is seated and when. I've been wanting to try this place for awhile. Today's my birthday so my husband called in breakfast orders for the two of us and our daughter. He and I ordered the full order of biscuits and gravy and our daughter ordered blueberry French toast. Hers was ok though would have been nice had they included butter but oh well. The biscuits and gravy were pretty disappointing. Super dry with a shockingly small amount of gravy. It was almost like a smear of gravy. Totally unsatisfactory. The only thing that I can surmise is that because it was a take-out order, they simply didn't care. I can't imagine they would have served something so dry and shameful to someone dinning in. Favorite breakfast spot! I had looked Nelson's up previously without realizing just how close it is to home. Now that I know, I'll be back and likely become a regular. There's a great breakfast selection available for a reasonable price. I was amazed at how large the two egg veggie omelette is. I've got a big appetite but wasn't able to finish my breakfast in one sitting. Indoor and outdoor seating is available. Service is very good. I was drinking water like there's no tomorrow and didn't have to wait for a refill. There's a small parking lot and street parking available. There's a bike rack out front. The bathroom is big and clean. Ask your waitress for the key. This is obviously a choice location for business. It was busy this Sunday morning. read more

The food was great, as was the service and ambience. I met up with a friend I only get to see once or twice a year, so our meals linger on. They had no problem with our extended stay. My only reason for taking off a Star (and if possible I would do 4.5 stars) was the fact the booth seat was wood without a cushion. This was my first visit to Nelson's Market. What a cute, quaint place. Who would have guessed a small market and a small restaurant could work so well together. The waitress Susie, was amazing. I let her know it was my first time there and asked her opinion on a few dishes. I ended up ordering the country fried steak and the gravy was different than any I had ever had before. It was delicious with a little hand of spice to it. I can't wait to go back and try their eggs Benedict. Susie told me that's one of their dishes that people come back for often. read more

Came to Marlins' Cafe at Nelson's Market for brunch on a Monday. Marlins' is inside Nelson's Market, which is pretty funky and fun, since most places in Bellingham aren't like this. It's located in the York neighborhood, which is especially fun! York is super cute, especially on a nice day. We sat outside since it was a beautiful day! It was pretty calm considering it was a weekday, which was nice for us. This was my second time here, and although it was good, I don't think this is a place I'd jump to return to. I ordered french toast and added blueberries and bananas to my order. The french toast is a super reasonable price at $6.75, but bumps up to $8 when adding either fruit. When I ordered bananas AND blueberries, that bumped it up to $10! Which is pretty ridiculous considering I received about half a banana and a small handful of frozen blueberries that had been thawed. I also ordered a half order of home fries which were amazing. Like I said, this isn't at the top of my list, but I wouldn't discourage anyone from going. Our waitress was really sweet and the food was good, but it's too weird to me how quickly your bill totals up with some really simple add-ons. read more

A classic cafe within an old-fashioned Market serving good food at affordable prices in an adorable vintage setting within Nelson's Cafe. My Caesar salad was freshly made with homemade croutons and shaved Parmesan cheese. My ginger-carrot soup special was tasty. Our waiter as nice as could be. And they pour a fine cup of coffee. Stumbled on this cute little diner before heading out of Bellingham. Seriously, this is the cutest diner!! We were lucky and it was a sunny day so we got to sit outside and have a nice breakfast there. The diner feels like you got in a time capsule and went back a few decades. The staff is very helpful and friendly. The food is also great and especially the pancakes!! The pancakes are huge and I was happy that they were real banana pancakes with banana mixed in the batter rather than over the top. The corned beef hash was really hearty and the meat was actually very moist. One of the better hash I've had. If I'm in the area, I'm definitely coming back. read more
