I gave this place a few tries over the years and it's just not good. Not only do they have employees that stare at and stalk you as you eat, but they also have the absolute WORST BBQ Rib I've ever tasted in my life! It was cold, mushy, and tasted like they had soaked it in bleach and dirty dish water. I've also seen the video footage of roaches crawling all over the plates. The selection was crappy and most of the food was hard, crusty, inedible, and just plain nasty. They used to get dinged on their health reports (back when those were available for the public to see) because they used to allegedly trap birds that flew in through an opening in their roof, and cook them. However to be yelled at for just wanting to help the establishment by taking pictures of the food and to give a none biased take on everything.. but to be given such a disrespectful remark and shut down was highly appalling. Up front; all my reviews are based on my expectation going in. I don't expect a wrap from the grocery store to be high tea with the Queen, and I rate accordingly. That said ... New Buffet City is my go-to for dinner when I am in Portsmouth for work overnight. they recently were closed for renovation and came out of it well. I have dined here more than 5 times and the food is always fresh and they are mindful of crowd size. the buffet is not over heated on slow weekdays, so the food is not overcooked. The hibachi bar (I call Mongolian barbecue) has many options and is always prepared perfectly right in front of you. I have enjoyed the taste of everything in the buffet. I stopped short of 5-stars because I think they could afford to have a bit more variety of the chilled food - salads, fruit and desert - and several visits it seemed like the soups were cook down. At $16.99 per adult you would think that the food quality was at least that of the Chinese food court place at Chesapeake Square Mall, but unfortunately it's not. We were seated under a very questionable air vent with what looked like black mold surrounding it. I wish I would have seen what the bathrooms looked like. Took a quick look around to see what we were getting into and some options looked promising for the price but it was just mediocre. The guest I was with mentioned that the chicken they had was either cold or very dry which makes sense considering it's under lamps for probably hours at a time. Overall, they really need to clean up, the vents looked like they hadn't cleaned them since the place opened. They also need to have more dessert options than dry sponge cake covered in pudding. This was some of the worst food I've ever had in my life. I ate a bite of every single thing at this restaurant and I didn't like any of it. Everything either no taste at all or had a super weird and off-putting taste that I didn't expect when I bit into it. The Texas toast was flavorless as were the spring rolls. The cream cheese rangoons were so stuffed with cheese that it was way too overwhelmingly sweet. All of the meat tasted like it'd been cooked in a pan that had never been washed, and nothing was seasoned. I mean nothing. Now don't judge my opinion of the buffet because this Sunday afternoon at 1pm, the restaurant was full of patrons... backs bent, forks up and down, smiles and laughter filled the restaurant. This restaurant has received several "Best of" honors... so they are winning. I am giving the hibachi station all 5 stars!!!! Maybe because I have a great rapport with the staff... they show me much love... but still the food made fresh ... overall so worthy of 5 stars! The parking in front of the restaurant is limited because this restaurant is located in a busy shopping area. Once you find a staple of something you like, you may want to tread carefully when venturing off. I am the type that likes to try new things and have often been penalized with tasting things I don't like after eating here. One of the things that bugs me is that sometimes the floors are slippery. This is probably my 10th time coming to this buffet in the past ten years...but the 1st time since their renovation. I normally only eat from the Mongolian grill, but I thought I would live dangerously and go for the buffet. I made two trips and the big thing that stood out was the food temperature. On the 1st go around the temperature of the food was a bit warmer than room temp (mind you, I came during peak lunch time). The second go around, the temps were better, but not as hot as I would prefer (or should be). PROS: -large selection -not overly dominated with seafood -plenty of soups -Mongolian grill always good -waitress was attentive -nice atmosphere -clean CONS: -food temps to low. -salad bar is skimpy -Buffett not so kid friendly if they are not big Chinese eaters. -$ a little high for lunch. A lot of things were a bit dried out. The fried chicken wings were TINY. I almost don't think it came from chickens.. it looked like they were probably Cornish hen wings which is odd. The egg rolls were dried out. The soup was good, noodles were good, chicken and broc good. I like that the Mongolian grill has a lot of options.. and you can make your plate, leave it and make a buffet plate. The guy will cook your food and cover it up when it's done for you to pick up. I'm back in VA visiting my family. We all decided to go out to Buffet City to get some ways. Chinese was the food of choice for dinner! Upon entry you are happily greeted by the hostess and quickly seated. To your left is the main counter with all the usual Chinese decorum and to your right is a large fish fountain. The setting is quite spacious. Plenty of seating from front to rear. I have heard this restaurant is known to be busy, but tonight was a bit slow. The selection of food is vast as well. If you fancy Mongolian BBQ, then you got that here! My grunts about this restaurant are: The selection of food is great but not all items are fresh...a bit dry when ready to eat (chicken wings, pork egg rolls, fried shrimp) The music I want to assume is native tongue and quite upbeat. Maybe there could be music that's more mellow and translated so we could know what the song is about b/c one waitress we asked didn't know what the song was/about. Pretty upset/disappointed with this place. I have been craving Mongolian for a few days now so my husband and I came in today excited to try this restaurant for the first time. First thing I noticed was that the meats weren't replenished, but I still grabbed a plate anyways... As I was half way through the bowl I noticed something mysterious with bones sticking out (didn't have any fish in my hibachi) I didn't really mind it until I picked out 4 more pieces of it from my bowl...
