I use to LOVE New China. I recently was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma and started chemotherapy over a week ago. I've been feeling pretty good the past couple of days & wanted to take my parents to dinner. So we went to New China, where we went to often. I was prepared with my antibacterial wipes, mask, etc. When we go in, my mom asks if we can sit in the back because there are less people. The guy looked at her like "why." She said she has cancer & can't be around a lot of people, there are less people in the back. The jerk said, "Well maybe you should stay home till you feel better." The guy who said that was about 60-70 yrs old. with glasses. Yup! Never going there again!! read more

I finally enjoyed the BEST CHINESE CUISINE I've had since I moved up to Northern California in 2005 from the L.A./Hollywood area of So. CA. Basically the Chinese cuisine, to put it bluntly, SUCKS up here! It has been disappointing, & killing me. Even Santa Barbara, San Diego, & Las Vegas have far better Chinese cuisine. I have not eaten any in San Francisco, for the record. I hear they have lots of tasty Chinese there. I could not eat at a bad Chinese restaurant in Southern CA! I ordered the two item combo w/ HONEY WALNUT CHICKEN & GARLIC PRAWNS, which came w/ the BEST CHICKEN CHOW MEIN I have ever had! Thinner noodles than usual, very moist, nice white tender chicken, & super tasty perfect sauce! The ALMOND CHICKEN, which I almost ordered, looked very nice in the YELP photos, & got many great reviews. I will have to try it soon. People raced that the WOR WON RON SOUP was the best they ever had, & the photos look very good. I kind of blew it because I did realise that they offer BENTO BOXES, SUSHI (they now have a SUSHI BAR!), TEMPURA, etc!!! I adore BENTO BOXES & TEMPURA, & of course love SUSHI!!! However, I have had the BENTO BOXES at SHANGRILA, (A fantastic Japanese cuisine restaurant!!!), in downtown Lodi, & it looks better than the photos of them here at NEW CHINA. We will see when I order one from here in the future. I must mention BEN, who took my to-go order over the phone yesterday (8-29-2019), & who I have met a few times since 2005, was & is so fantastic! We recently moved to town and have been trying restaurants to see what we like... We found the food here quite bland for our taste. We ordered fried rice, walnut shrimp, chow main, and kung Pao chicken. The kung Pao chicken was not spicey at all. I think we will try other places and skip this one. read more

All things considered with everything going on I have to say that I will be trying this place again after everything with COVID is done. This place is okay. The fried shrimp was okay. I think it might have given me and my husband a stomach ache but not really sure 100% if that was it. We also had the wonton soup, cheese Rangoon, and the Jacktobe roll. All three of these items were wonderful but the chow mein was not good for us. It was a lot of the lettuce stuff and hardly any noodles. Moving on to the fried rice it was chicken fried rice but the chicken was barely cut up so it had massive chunks in it. And finally we hard the sweet and sour chicken. I don't know if it is standard but it came as fried chicken and the sauce on the side. It was okay wasn't the best I've ever had. When it comes to the restaurant and staff. This place used to be on point with their food...today we decided to grab lunch...big mistake. We both ordered the Shiro Maguro (Albacore tuna sashimi), when it arrived, the presentation was pretty lackluster. 8 thick pieces of sashimi on assorted lettuce, both of us got lettuce cores...the color of the fish was a little off putting. Grayish white, with the smell of fish...but we decide to try em anyway. Both of our servings were ice cold and frozen. Not the way to enjoy sashimi. We ask the server to take it back and he offered something else, so we said the regular maguro sashimi. We must have pissed off the sushi chef because we got 8 paper thin slices of maguro sashimi, the funny thing is...they charge a dollar more for the regular maguro vs the shiro...yet they served us less than the frozen fish they initially gave us. Here's the sad part...we have been coming to this spot for years, and we have ordered the maguro before and the thickness of the pieces are usually the same thick slices that we are used to...this time they really let us down. Not coming back to this spot...such disrespect to loyal customers. The only reason for the 2 stars is the wait staff was nice. read more

So we normally love coming here and recieve good service but they had a new waitress who was AWFUL... She didn't understand anything we asked, forgot everything, and overall was just rude. We came for my son's birthday and my aunt asked for her check early because she had to leave, waitress brought it and my aunt gave her card, after she asked the waitress if she took her payment and the waitress said yes. After my aunt left we were ready to pay and the waitress came back and said my aunt didn't pay??? When I asked her why she told my aunt that she already took the payment when she didn't she said she 'didn't know'. So we were stuck paying my aunts bill. Then we noticed THEY WROTE IN ALL THEIR OWN TIPS!! Frustrated we paid for my aunts food and our tab and she brought the tab back with her tip written in again and then DEMANDED we sign it. Literally stood there as we were barely finishing and visiting and repeatedly told us to sign. We told her we will that we were still sitting and talking and she continued to shove the bill at us demanding a signature. I am just disgusted that anyone would think this service is okay. Finally my fiance got upset enough and went up to the front to speak to the manager and he just stared at him as well. Nothing to say. No apology. Nothing. Tried this place 2x and food taste horrible. Ordered chicken chowmein and it was nasty. Just the look of it makes you not wanna eat it. It looks like they just sauté onion and cabbage and add about 2 strips of chicken and did not season with anything. Also ordered soup and off course it was like drinking warm water with egg. Went to this place because people were raving about it on reviews. I did not come out to impressed. The breading on the tempura was hard and I could taste more of the flour than the shrimp. The sweet and sour pork dish was really delicious though. The restaurant is also kinda dimly lit, a little more brighter lighting would really be good to take out that pub feel. read more

Reading all these bad reviews makes me laugh! New China has some of the best food around. Their honey walnut shrimp is on point. Their chow mein is bomb. Garlic chicken, legit. It's an actually chicken breast instead of a thigh or drumstick. Sweet and sour pork is pretty basic but not in a bad way, it's good. Their sushi is pretty good too. All their flavors are awesome. I've eaten there and taken it to go a ton of times, I have never had a bad experience. I will drive from Stockton to get food here. I have eaten at so many Chinese restaurants and this place is one of the best! read more

Wow where do I start. Went to celebrate my birthday there last night, a restaurant I chose to go to because I love their food, I had a different restaurant in mind but made the mistake of chosing this one and not so much for the food but for the service. Wow the service has sure declined here. We ordered and had to eat cold food because they forgot to make one of my family members food so we all waited for her food to show up 20 mins late. Drink refills took forever if you even ever got one. Waited for water that never showed up. But the worst part was when the bill came they had added a tip to 1 bill, the tip was not much but i thought wow you want a tip when the service sucked so bad but ok and We had explained to the waiter at the beginning that everyone would be paying their own bill to which he said ok, now i think he might not have actually understood. So we took the bill to the front and asked again if we could each pay our own bill and the woman owner was so mad she actually yelled at us. Now I think if you couldn't handle a group of 11 you could have just asked us to leave. Im a lover of good food but I also think that if your paying customer has chosen to eat at your establishment the least we can expect is a lil common courtesy and a bit of good service because the reason you're in business is because of the customer. We asked at the beginning of our meal, its not like we sprung the paying situation at the end of our meal. Im sad because I honestly never thought I would ever be giving you a bad review but I'll tell you something I don't care how good your food may be if you can't be polite or kind to your customers you don't deserve my hard earned money. I went to new China Restaurant for dinner again today, this time as with my friends, they all had good comment in the food and environment. Every food there is good, I tried a lot sushi that I had not try before, they are all good, especially the King Kong sushi, still order the raw salmon, the quality of those fish is good, and each dishes are big, I couldn't finish all, so took some to go. Only place open late and really wanting some sweet and sour pork " VERY GROSS" I ended up getting chow main "had no flavor " fried rice was semi okay orange chicken was very good but different and sauce came separate and good thing it was because the sauce was nasty kung Pao chicken was HORRIBLE ! I like yelp. It's time like these I have to wonder if other reviewers eat at the same New China I do. Having lived around the corner from New China, and dated (eventually married) the girl who worked the take out counter, I absolutely love this place. The fried rice, garlic chicken, and kung pao beef are among the best I've had at any chinese restaurant. I also highly reccomend the Chow Fun, Mu Shu, and Salt Pepper Beef. I might also point out that in the evening, most the employees (who are family) have truly authentic chinese food, not the americanized stuff we're used to. So I'm sure they can make that for you if you prefer. I'd also like to address the rumor of them getting busted for serving dog. It's a rumor, that stems from the family's trip to China for two weeks in June every year. People see the 'closed' sign, and their imaginations of unscrupulous restaurants run wild! Little do they know, it's an annual family trip. Rest assured; the chicken is chicken, the beef is beef, and the pork is pork (although yes, the crab rangoon has no crab. I thought that as strange too... haha!). What's more, in the 5 years my wife worked at the restaurant she never once saw a single shady thing. I highly reccomend this restaurant to anybody who likes authentic or americanized chinese food. It's inexpensive, great tasting, and fast! read more

Truly enjoyed everything we ordered. Service is fast and friendly. The chicken Katsu child's plate had a lot of chicken, with rice, egg roll, and a tempura shrimp. and the kids love it. The Honey Walnut roll is huge and really tasty!! I ordered a vege chow mien and vege rice with fried prawns plate with egg flower drop soup. Very good!!! I go to this restaurant for lunch every month or so with a group of about ten people. I don't even like Chinese food, but this place is pretty good. The waitresses are incredible! This is the only place on this planet that I can sit down and order "the usual" and actually get the right stuff! There are a few in our group that have food allergies and need to be careful about what they get. The staff is very accommodating in this regard and one time one of the waitresses remembered one of the group had an allergy. When he ordered the wrong thing she reminded him, "Don't order that. It's got eggs in it." Any waitress that handles our group of ten to twelve picky, boisterous patrons and smiles the entire time deserves high praise. Our waitress today was named "Kitty." She earned high praises today! Somebody in a previous review mentioned that the restaurant closes down for a few weeks every summer. I think we tried to go here during the shutdown two or three years a row! I had never enjoyed Chinese food until I ate here. read more

Walked in and the atmosphere was pretty chill, my fiancé and I were greeted by an older lady her attitude was kind of on the rude side, the boss or owner of the restaurant was also rude at first as well. The waitress apologized to my fiancé and I about their rude attitudes which kind of helped lighten up the mood. The food on the other hand was really delicious. We ordered the chicken chow mein, juicy and fresh, the orange chicken was saucy and had a bit of a crunch, the California roll was okay. But it's a good restaurant with delicious food. I like rice. I like Chinese food. No matter how hard up I am for both. I will not go back here. The service is lack luster. The staff is cold and unpersonable. The service is slow. If you have any kind of allergy and need to omit an ingredient out of the dish (let's say... water chestnuts), they will charge you for taking them out. We ordered take out... Hot & Sour Soup, General Taso Chicken, Broccoli Beef, special fried rice and fried wonton. The hot and sour soup we unrecognizable with a taste to match, two people in our group did not like and we threw it out. The broccoli beef, was missing the beef, with only 10 pieces of beef and too much thickening agents. The rice was good and the General Taso chicken was okay. Sorry folks but I would not recommend this place to anyone and giving two stars for effort and the free egg rolls that were good. Will not go back read more

I have tried almost every Chinese food place in Manteca, since I have lived here most of my life. I personally Loved Dave Wong's in Stockton growing up & this place is the closest I have found. The only guess I have is that some people must have gone on a bad day. We all have them, one of the cooks gets sick, others have to fill in, and then the food might be "off" I love so many dishes they serve, however, I am not a sushi fan, so I will only comment on the regular Chinese menu. Some of mine & my family's favorites are the BBQ sliced pork, fried asparagus(seasonal, but the green beans are just as good an appetizer), even on days where I just want a soup & salad, the Chinese chicken salad & sizzling rice soup hit the spot!! My husband loves their pork fried rice & broccoli beef.....we also love steamed veggies with shrimp, Honey Walnut Prawns (very sweet), sweet & sour pork/chicken. (**Tip---the sweet & sour pork or chicken are great "to-go" items & since the pieces are fried, they give you the sauce on the side for you to cover the fried meats & mix together yourself so they don't get soggy on the way home) My mom & I love the almond chicken. They have so many dishes and I do try new ones, Kung Pao is good, my kids love the Fried Prawns & when in the mood their Garlic Chicken hits the spot. I will say, I have a sensitivity to MSG. I have learned to control it with avoidance and being cautious with what I eat. If you mention it to them, they will assure that nothing has MSG in it during cooking (this could account for the gentleman who had stomach issues after eating here) Yes they charge per person for tea, but not any different than if you went to another non Asian food restaurant and got a hot tea. We order "to go" from New China at least once a month & drive across town past at least 5 other Chinese food places to pick up dinner here, it is worth it, in our opinion. I take guests here for business lunches and when friends visit from out of town. Not one complaint in my years of going there. Also, yes they do have family vacations every June/July for a couple weeks, I try to get there for my fix before they take the break, and if I miss it & they are closed---I am usually one of their first customers when they reopen.
