I was a long time and loyal fan of New India until recently. The food used to be consistently fresh, delicious, and well-spiced, however, things have been changing and I am now done giving chances. The past several orders over a span of several months have been lacking in consistency, flavor, and quality. Everything is very greasy and flavorless. During my most recent visit last week, I was served some of the worst Indian food I have ever had. The jalaphrezi was so disgusting I sent it back, the mattar mushrooms (which is not what I ordered, but I did not complain) were bland and tasteless, and the aloo gobi had hardly a hint of Indian spices in it. Furthermore, my longtime favorite staple, the onion chutney, was watered down and oily. I don't know if they got a new chef or simply have sold out to unsophisticated American tastes, but they are doing themselves no favors. The food was amazing. The flavors were fantastic and the "hot" was perfect and just enough heat to have me sweating. I had the chicken biryani which was more than enough for myself. I brought up at least half of the serving and brought it to work. My coworker had a lamb vandaloo dish which was out of this world. I'd definitely come here again but unfortunately I gave up buffets for New Years so this place may need to wait. I'd highly recommend it. We got there around 5pm and it seemed that they did not have the heat on until more customers walked through the door. It was very cold. Delicious!! I've been here multiple times - several of them were motivated by coupons - and really enjoy the food. The atmosphere (if you're eating in) is also noteworthy with some pretty elaborate chandeliers that don't totally match their booths. The service was just fine - I am a little astonished at the mentions of terrible service in other reviews. This is not my favorite Indian restaurant in Columbus (see my review for Aab India) but it is entirely serviceable, great for take-out, and near several other restaurants if you and your dining companion don't agree on the same cuisine for the night (Hunan Lion is one example). We went to another Indian restaurant for a long time until it closed. Thats when we tried New India. Im glad we did. The food is great and the staff is really wonderful. During early covid we would get carry out about every other week from them. They were genuinely appreciative of our business. We just finished at this restaurant, and I felt pretty good about it! I read the previous reviews, and for the most part, I concur. The food was a solid 4/5. I would have given it a 3 1/2 stars as the service was clumsy and not really warm at first. We got them to smile by the end. The decor was average for an Indian restaurant. Not at all modern, but thankfully not a bright white room with fluorescent bulbs either. As for the food went, it was really good. Not the best Indian I have ever had, but better than most. We had an order of Samosa, which had a nice tamarind sauce and mint sauce. There was a hot chutney that came with our pampadum that was nice. The poori perfectly cooked! As was the balsmati rice, which I really hate when it's over cooked. Theirs was perfect! Our entree's were a mushroom saag aloo and a peneer in red sauce. Both were wonderful! Hot, medium spiced, and delicious. The really great thing about this place was the large vegetarian/vegan/gluten free options. Major kudos to this restaurant for that! All in all, I would definitely come back to this place. A pretty decent buffet with a decent price. I was impressed with the amount of variety they had even though the space seems so small. For around $11, they had tandori chicken, naan, saag,and about 5 different curries. They also had 3 different dessert dishes available. The food was hot and tasted fresh. Now of course the food is dumbed down for the less adventurous eater so that was my only disappointment. The only dish with a decent spice was the cauliflower dish. I'm no real expert on Indian cuisine but I enjoy it and have had it often, and this place has a very good buffet that ranks up there. From my conversations with Indian friends, this appears to be Northern Indian cuisine which is typical of the majority of Indian restaurants in the US. We especially enjoyed the Chicken Chili on the buffet, something I've never seen before in any other restaurant (and no, it's nothing like American Texas chili in case you're wondering - it's definitely an Indian dish - I think the work Chili in the name reflects the chili pepper probably and has nothing to do with American Chili powder! I also enjoyed the goat meat which is something you don't always find, and their Tandoori chicken was surprisingly moist, unlike the overly dry stuff we unfortunately typically find elsewhere. Overall, we felt the buffet was a cut above the typical in quality. Spices were on the mild side, probably to suit the midwestern pallet but not too mild either, probably just about right, even for a guy that likes more heat than most. And the price is very reasonable ($8.50 I think for Sunday lunch, even cheaper with a coupon), much better than some of my more local Indian buffets for the same variety and equal or perhaps better quality! read more

After moving here, It took almost no time for my wife and me to find an Indian restaurant in Columbus. Luckily, the first place we tried was the best: New India at Bethel Center. We've been to many other Indian restaurants in and around town, but this one takes the grand prize for having the best food at the best price. Not only is the food good, but the staff is always the same -- a quality I look for in a restaurant. It tells me that the staff is personally invested in the quality of its food and service. They are a decidedly serious group. Don't expect jubilation, just expect to be taken care of. The buffet -- like any buffet -- is dicey. Sometimes, the Naan will be a bit charred. Sometimes, it will be perfectly baked. Generally speaking, unless a restaurant specializes in its buffet, I don't gauge its overall quality from the buffet. Order off of the menu, and make your decision from there. You can't really go wrong! read more

I have not dined at the restaurant but have gotten take out from here several times over the past few months. Best place for Indian take out that I have ever had, including New York and San Francisco. Still the best Indian food in Columbus. I am in love with the fact that I can get it delivered directly to my face using Cafe Courier, which cuts out the middleman with awful service. However, my roommate and I were laughing about the fact that they somehow still manage to "stick it to you" when you do this. While I always order my meal "hot" (rather than mild), there was one occasion where the spice level was so hot I could barely eat it. I've been to New India about a half dozen times over the last 3 years. The food is consistent and has great flavor. I'm giving 5 star for their ongoing consistency and I've never had a meal that I didn't love here. The ambiance is peaceful, slightly outdated, very similar to other small ethnic restaurants. I've always found the place to be clean and the service staff is attentive. Tonight we had: Paneer Shahi Korma Fresh cheese in this slightly yellow creamy sauce spices with cashews and raisin. Slightly sweet and scrumptious. Lamb Saag The lab in the saag (spinach cooked with ghee [clarified butter]) gives out a very meaty, robust, salty flavor. Was wonderful to offset the other dish. I honestly could swim in this stuff. The lamb was juicy and tender. Poori Ohhh the poori, the precious, fried puffy bread. Crisp, flaky, chewy. If you have only had naan before, do yourself a favor and splurge on this tasty little treat. It puts naan to shame. There are coupons listed on their website and it is often on Groupon. I feel some kind way always getting it so cheap. Just make sure you tip your server off of the original bill. It's only fair, right. They do offer delivery from both Skip the Dishes and UberEats. And, I don't drink, but they have pitchers and half pitchers of beer on draft and some imported bottled beer. read more

I both love and hate this place. The food is simply the best Indian food I have ever had, five stars all the way. Chicken Tikka Masala is a favorite, the naan bread is lovely (garlic is my fave), and so is just about everything else you can get here. The service and the décor are something else entirely. If I wanted to eat at a medium-security penitentiary, I'm sure I could find some hilarious way of getting myself put into one. We eat at New India Restaurant at least once a week! I've tried many Indian restaurants in town but nothing beats their food! We've never had issues with their service - they're not up in your face with fake smiles asking you how the food is every five seconds but they are attentive and have never gotten an order wrong. There is a lunch buffet weekdays and weekends - we have tried it but prefer the menu to a crowded buffet. I had not tried Indian food before in my life and some friends recommended this restaurant as a good choice. I have to say I enjoyed the flavors and the fresh Naan. It has been a while since I've been back and I can only recall the dishes I had but both the Chicken Tikka Masala and the Chicken Saag were great. I preferred the Chicken Saag and with the naan it was perfect. I don't have much I can compare this Indian restaurant to other Indian restaurants, but I believe this is one of the better ones. The only real issue I had was our server was inattentive and seemed annoyed to be working at all. I am not picky when it comes to ordering and I give a server leeway if it is a dinner rush, but this was a slow day and a bad attitude is something you can leave at home when you come to work. read more

Whenever I'm in town, I make it a point to come back. Pros: -Amazing food. It's sooooo good. When I leave I'm happy. -Good variety in their buffet. Not watered down like many buffet places. -The aesthetic isn't fancy, but that's what I like about it. A true mom and pop restaurant. -I like the service. (I feel I should address it since that's sometimes the knack against them). They aren't mean, they aren't jumping up and down. They're in the middle and I like that. Starting from the ambience, it was great with Punjabi hits playing in the background. The food was great too, full of flavor. I ordered malai kofta, and it was by far the best malai kofta I had in Columbus. I was a bit worried as many of the reviews say that the service is horrible. But it was not the case for us. The food came within 10 minutes and we were properly taken care of. We had a Groupon coupon and two curries and two different bread costed us just 10 dollars. New India used to be my hands down favorite Indian place in Columbus for at least 5 years. Unfortunately they quietly changed ownership in 2017 and while they said the kitchen staff remained, things have changed. The quality and consistency of the food isn't reliable with less less meat/paneer, changing flavors on my old favorites, and little things like no longer serving papadum before meals when you dine in. read more

My main gripe is the the dishes we ordered were made with tomato paste, and not real tomatoes. This made what should be spicy dishes too sweet! New India is one of my all time favorite restaurants. Their Vindaloo is amazing and the Curry too! I have tried a handful of things from here and they have all been so good. Also the service is always great. We went before dine in was closed down and the waitress was wonderful. Now we do pick up probably once a month. Always get our order correct and sometimes they put a sample dessert in. They even hand write little thank you notes. I love the sincerity and quality of this place.
