We have been to New India twice in the recent past. The first thing you notice even from the outside is that it looks very dated. Even the sign outside looks pretty old. Then you enter the restaurant and you are not delighted with the design or the colors. Before getting into the food, I recommend they do a renovation to make it more attractive looking. We ordered chicken tikka masala and chicken biryani. Tikka masala was a 4 out of 5, but biryani was only 2 or 3. It wasn't bad, it just lacked the flavor I am used to getting at other Indian restaurants in Dublin area. How's this for an opener? I've been eating New India food for about 2 years, and I've never stepped in the restaurant. It's all been through a delivery service. How do you reconcile something like that? Well, I finally made my peace with it by saying I'll just lead with that provision in place. Solid food at a reasonable price. I particularly like their vegetarian options. I am a faithful fan of the "Aloo Matar", which is essentially peas and potatoes in a red sauce. Delicious. My wife is a Biryani fan. We're pretty religious in our devotion to these respective dishes, but I've branched out when the mood strikes, and the seasoning, preparation, and quality of food is usually above-average. I can't say it's the best Indian in Columbus, but it's near me, it's consistent, and it's never let me down. We had lunch at New India today, and both of us were very pleasantly surprised at how good the food was. The entrees were cooked to perfection, the sauces were delicious and spiced just right, and the staff was so friendly. I particularly enjoyed the music on the overhead speakers...it was soothing and made the dining experience there that much better. I had the Vegetarian Thali and hubs had the Tandoori Chicken that came to the table sizzling. We sampled each other's food and were completely full & satisfied when we left. New India Restaurant has great food! I love their Lamb Saag the most. We ordered carryout, and they accidentally forgot one of our entrees. I called the restaurant and they remade the order right away. While it was inconvenient to drive all the way back; we got our missing entrée and a complimentary juice. Obviously mistakes happen sometimes. Nobody is perfect! They rectified the situation in the end. I doubt this happens often, but it might be a good idea to check your carryout order before you drive off. I think I'll need to start doing this everywhere when ordering carryout just as good measure. read more

Solid choice for Indian takeout in Columbus, where finding good Indian food is tricky. A large order of food was ready fast and was clearly hot and fresh. Amazing Indian place. Im very generic with my Indian foods. Always just get Chicken Tikka Masala so my opinions on a place will generally be about 2 things. How good the service was and how good the CTM was. The service was quite good. They have pop in cans which is annoying but not the end of the world. The CTM which i got "spicy" however was spectacular. Probuably the best ive had. The naan was good as well. Good size, and not burnt or anything like it be sometimes. Highly recommended. read more

I think I found the perfect solution to the great food/awful service dilemma that others have mentioned regarding the New India restaurant. My dining-in experience about a year ago was so awful due to the rude and sullen service that I didn't remember whether the food was any good. I didn't even want to bother doing takeout for fear of encountering the same rude staff at the counter when picking up my order. However, after reading some of the Yelp reviews about the great food, I decided to order via Cafe Courier. My food has been delivered on-time, piping hot and delicious. And the person who delivers my food has always been pleasant and efficient. I've had the aloo naan (Mashed potatoes stuffed), Tandoori chicken, Lamb biryani, mixed vegetables in curry sauce, and several of their chutneys. All were wonderful and reasonably priced. The tandoori chicken was the best chicken I've had in any dish from any cuisine. Until the Yelp reviews universally reassure me that the service has improved, I will choose to go elsewhere when I want to go out for Indian food. As an introvert, I don't want to waste my social energy being in places where I feel my presence is not welcome. But New India has become my favorite place when I want to order delivery. read more

Here's the thing with New India: the food is 5 stars, but the service is horrible, so you've got to know that going in. Save yourself and just get the take-out. Or better yet, opt for Amul India, around the corner on Sawmill Rd and 5 stars all around. Anyway... chicken tikka masala is what you'd expect, creamy and spicy and delicious. Hubby orders the extra hot and I usually get hot or medium, and you can tell the difference just in the brightness of the sauce! Their naan is always great too, we've had plain, garlic, and aloo (potato - its the best one). Mango Lassi is only $2 and well worth it. Skip the gulab jamun - its only $2 too but you only get TWO of them. Service: really, really bad. They will not escort you to a table, they won't say a word except "what do you want?". I don't know if they hate their jobs or what, but its all of the servers. And you can't blame it on the language barrier - they always get my order spot on. And you can't blame the culture because every other Indian restaurant we love is super nice to their customers. read more

Meh. Here's the thing.. The food is SO good, but every time that we've gone, the service is just... bad. The very first time I went here, no "hello" or "how are you", not even a smile. The waitress literally tossed our menus on the table and asked us "drinks?". If they had waited a minute or two maybe we would have ordered a beer (more $$ for them). No help with recommendations, I felt nervous about what I was ordering and ended up getting a vegetarian sampler of some sort. The food was awesome. I ended up taking half of it home because the portions were huge, but I can't complain about that. My date got a really spicy dish (i can't remember the name of it). He loved it but we struggled to get refills on our water the whole meal. He had to borrow mine. I am a generous tipper but at the end of our meal I didn't feel great about giving my money to someone who was so rude to me. I tip well even on so-so service, I understand bad service if a restaurant is packed but we were the only table. If they had at least been "nice" to me our waitress would've been left 20%. I would rather get take out or something from here, not sure if they offer it but both times that we've gone to eat here we've received the same level of service. I'll give them a few more chances but I don't think I can keep going to a restaurant where the service makes me feel bad for being there, lol. read more

Very good Indian food and I would have given them at least 4 stars but as most non-western restaurants do, they interpreted my request for "hot" as "white girl spicy." My order was not spicy at all. Samosas were yummy. I'm used to a flakier crust but these guys had a more pie-ish crust. The coriander chutney was awesome-sauce! Ordered the paneer mahkani. Would have enjoyed it spicier, as mentioned before no heat in the dish could be detected really, but the portions were very generous. Lots of cubes of cheese! The garlic naan was great as well. I was craving a lunchtime Indian buffet and since Sheree Punjab was closed I found myself searching Yelp for local Indian eateries. I wasn't aware this place was so close to me , let alone existed! I'm not sure why others have complained about the buffet being small. It seemed to have the average things you'll find at any other buffet. I thought the Chicken Tika Masala was good. The Palek Paneer was ok. The naan and the veggie samosas were a little dry. The Pakora was tasty. The service was good. I thought I'd mention that since many others have written about bad experiences in that department. They were attentive with the water glass filling. The lunch buffet for 2 was only around $14. I really hate giving "bad" reviews but I truly have "experienced better". I stopped in some time ago with a groupon, and very much in the mood for something rich and flavorful. Since I had some "extra" money to play with, I chose a wide range of menu items, including coconut soup, naan, lamb shahi korma, spiced tea, and gulab jamun ...my favorite Indian dishes. The dishes were all nicely served - the typical silver colored platters and bread baskets - but somehow everything just seemed to lack flavor. The coconut soup came out first. It had plenty of sweet, warm, coconut milk taste, as well as very large pieces of actual coconut, though it was a tad watery for my tastes. The tea was also very good. ...but probably the most seasoned thing I had. Seasoning was the major problem I had with the main dish, the curry. I eat a lot of curry - it's my favorite food, regardless of type or nation of origin - and I like it at a medium level of spice (enough so there's a kick but not so much you don't taste the other seasonings). I know that this is what I asked for, so I was very disappointed when I got a curry that was so mild as to taste like eating beef gravy. The only seasoning I could really discern was pepper, of which there were large black flakes, though not so much that it made the dish "spicy". Thinking about it now, I honestly wonder if there was some ingredients left out? At least the texture and color were decent and there was also plenty of meat... though its flavor was a bit strong. Of course, maybe it normally is in curries, but the rich blend of spices make it seem milder. That just wasn't the case here. Oh well. Mixed with the soft rice and fresh (if again rather bland) naan, it was edible and filling. Just not... exciting. I honestly make better curry at home using the spices in my pantry and mixes I buy at the grocery store. At least dessert, the gulab jamun, was okay, and had plenty of cardamom sweetness. Definitely better than the times I have tried to make it, and a good end to any Indian meal. Atmosphere is nice - typical Indian restaurant with plush booths, glittery chandeliers, and a few pieces of art/sculpture. There is also a bar, popular with the college kids who came in while I was there. It's nothing to get excited over in and of itself, though. Service... again, not unusual for Indian places which for some reason often have curt, unenthused servers. She was, though, efficient and capable. A smile might have been nice, though. Perhaps it was just a bad day all around? At least the prices are okay. For the most part, they charge the same as most Indian places...maybe a hair less. However, New India also is involved with and offers a large range of coupons and discounts if you watch the websites/papers/deal websites. They often show up on Groupon, for instance, and I had no problem using mine. However, no matter how good a deal might be, it will be really hard for me to justify returning when there are so many other really good Indian places in the area with truly flavorful korma... read more

There are so many restaurants in this strip mall that it's hard to tell where any particular smell is coming from when you're in the parking lot. Then you start heading toward New India, and it starts to get more distinct. Not coincidentally, this is right about where it hits you just how hungry you are and how, yes, Indian food was the right decision tonight. The restaurant was about a third full when I went at dinnertime on a Friday. Service (to go) was efficient and businesslike. With "businesslike," I'm choosing a positive way of noting that the woman who rang me up had no smiles or chit-chat or even much in the way of a thank you, but it wasn't necessarily something to complain about. Two things I particularly like about New India, and one of them is the food. Have never had any complaints about the food. I had the chana saag (chickpea spinach curry) this time, and despite its sludge-like appearance, it tasted like a spice party where green veggies were everyone's date. Man, that was a terrible metaphor. But the dish was good. The naan is fluffy and warm, and it absorbs the curry perfectly. The other thing I particularly like consists of these eleven words: "Entrees 9 to 21 can be made vegan at your request." This appears in the vegetarian section of the menu. It's always helpful when the establishment makes it easy to figure out what and how to order like that. Plus, thirteen dishes give the vegan or otherwise dairy-free diner a lot to look forward to. The strip mall is old so the interior is not all to modern. However they have my favorite lunch buffet in the area and I feel that their food has more flavor compared to competing Indian buffets. In pursuit of the best Indian Buffet that isn't too far away from work, this is the 4th we have been to in about as many months. I will say that it is not the best and definitely not the worst. Walking in to a typical Indian Buffet decor, the first thing I disagree with is the too dim lighting. I am here to stuff my face at lunch, not a romantic dinner. The music isn't really Indian fare, seems more like something from the big band era. This strikes me as a bit odd. As for the food, I thoroughly enjoyed the naan. It was really good and well prepared. Second favorite would be some manner of eggplant and potato casserole where the eggplant is cooked down so far, it became more of the casserole base than the substance. Delicious. The tandoori chicken is also very good and supremely moist. Middling reviews go to the masala and chicken curry. I have had better and they lack both flavor and heat. All the other dishes I tried pretty much fall in to this category including the paneer which gets a resounding meh. New India is another trusty Indian place I frequent - but almost always for carryout. As others have mentioned, the service here blows, and the one time the boy and I ate in here, we were incredibly nonplussed by our experience. Since most of my experience at New India is about the food, let me tell you that while it's not the best, it's certainly very good. I recommend the vegetarian chef's special, paneer shahi korma, which is paneer cheese in a creamy yellow sauce with raisins and cashews and the most amazing spices. The paneer kulcha and the aloo naan are also favourites of mine. I really had high hopes for the kashmiri naan, but as it turns out, it is always very dry. I would love to try the chicken tikka masala here at some point... but Udipi's incredible paneer masala has definitely made me shy about trying anything that might be even remotely inferior (which, I am convinced, is anything aside from Udipi's). So, basically if you want carryout, give New India a shake - their North indian food is very good. If you want atmosphere or even just friendly service, try Bayleaf or Udipi or Taj. read more
