My experiences here (and there have been many) have always been good. The waitstaff varies from doting to capable-but-slightly-detached. The prices are reasonable too. Since I used to live near this spot I have eaten the buffet close to a zillion times. The chicken pakoras are yummy and a special treat because few Indian buffets have them in this city. I went to New India Restaurant with my husband last weekend. I'm a fan of Indian food, but we don't get out as often as ideally I'd like, so I'm not a seasoned gourmand or anything. I was delighted with the flavors and freshness of the non-vegetarian combo platter, called thali. It had small servings of lamb, chicken, and lentil dishes, plus some tandoori chicken, several pieces of fresh, warm naan, some basmati rice, plus a marinated carrot salad and a small serving of a sweetend rice pudding. It was absolutely scrumptious. I'm not usually a big fan of lamb, but the lamb dish and the lentil dish were my favorite! Looking forward to visiting here again (though with my track record, probably not as quickly as I would like!). :( read more

Best chicken makhani in town - hands down. My family loves Indian food so we've tried nearly every Indian restaurant in Columbus, but New India is our absolute favorite. We've never had a dish that we didn't love. New India has been a staple for my family and I. The food is always fresh and served HOT, which is amazing. Today when we had out food delivered the restaurant added a free small mango lassi, which my toddler and I enjoyed. It was such a nice gesture especially during these trying times. We have been ordering via Postmates for awhile and love the Chicken Tikka Masala ....it is delicious! My 6 year old requests it often. Terrible, terrible, terrible service! I'm giving it one star only because the food was comparable to the other Indian restaurants in Columbus, and zero stars isn't an option. The waitress tossed our menu cards carelessly on the table and couldn't seem to care less about the fact that she did not have the drink I wanted even though it was clearly on the menu. The food was as good as it gets in and around Columbus, but nothing spectacular. Clearing up, the same waitress decided to bang the dishes around and toss our cutlery into the dishes noisily, and generally was quite unfriendly and unpleasant. On top of everything, when the check arrived, the same lady thought it was necessary to circle the tip calculation portion of the receipt, and on being asked why, told us it was to help us calculate the tip, since many patrons struggle with calculators unable to calculate the tip. ( she yelled this out to us across the room, and told us we may tip if we wished to do so ) Phew! Never coming back! read more

Whenever I ask one of my Indian friends where I should go for good, authentic Indian cooking, she always points me to New India Restaurant. I'd be lying if I were to say that I wasn't a bit skeptical at times, since I hardly ever see anyone walk into the restaurant. Imagine my surprise when I was greeted by a nearly full dining area during lunch time! The buffet offerings here were far superior than what the best Indian restaurant in Toledo (Indian Jewel) offered. Never a fan of the vegetarian dishes, I breathed a sigh of relief when I saw at least four meat entrees. Chicken tikka masala, tandoori chicken, and lamb curry were all outstanding. Dipping the naan in the sauces of the aforementioned tikka masala and curry dishes sent me off with a food coma. I was also delighted to see that there were more than one dessert option, but who am I kidding? I MUST get the rice pudding whenever I see it, and so far, I've seen it offered at every buffet I've been to. The other dessert option was gulab jamun. The gods of Indian desserts must have known ahead of time that I would be stopping in that day, hence, the presentation of two of my all time favorite desserts. The staff was friendly and speedy. Plates were quickly cleared from our table and waters immediately refilled. Highly recommend for a quick and hassle-free lunch! read more

I have eaten here probably three times now. On two occasions I had the buffet, and another I had dinner off the menu. The food has always been solid. Nothing to blow me out of the water yet, but definitely worthy of return visits. The staff is pretty attentive when it isn't buffet service, and the lassi is good. I can't eat Indian without ordering a lassi. It's a problem. My main complaints would be 1) the naan is pretty poor and 2) the bathrooms are kinda...I don't know, dirty compared to the rest of the restaurant. There are far worse restrooms, but usually the dining room is to match. You would expect better considering the standard set out front. read more

Our group of 5 stepped into a near empty restaurant and had to wait for 5+ minutes before we were acknowledged and seated. The lesser said about the food the better. I have a love-hate relationship with New India. On one hand, their food is pretty dang good (4 stars worth in my book) and they offer one of the better Indian buffets in town but on the other hand, I can not stand to endure terrible dinning experience I suffer there almost every time. This time around, we had to dine in as we had a groupon deal and lo and behold, the service was exactly what we expected. The eternally grouchy lady (if you go here often, you will know exactly which one of the grouchy ladies I am talking about) stared us down when we entered and begrugingly pointed us to a booth. Later, she stomped over and yanked the napkins and untensils out of our cups and almost threw them down on the table - 1. why do you keep the napkins and untilsins in my cup? 2. that really makes me want to drink out of the said cup. 3. did we ever do something to you to deserve such a treatment? Anyway, after waiting for good long while, we got our orders in: an order of samosas, chicken tikka masala (my fav at this place), mutter paneer, kashmiri naan, mango lassi and chai. Food as usual were awesome. Samosas were crunchy on the outside, filled with yummy chunks of potato and some other veggie items with just enough spice and seasoning. Both entrees were good as usual, but we agreed that they should have been cooked a little more... the chicken had not had enough time to infuse with awesome and creamy tomato based sauce. Same for the paneers and the peas actually had uncooked texture, smell and flavor. Kashmiri naan is filled with a mixture of chopped up nuts and rasins... which makes for a delightfully sweet and savory filling to a wonderful flat bread - highly recommend it. Mango lassi was good as usual. Chai, which I tried for the first time here was just ok... I've had better. Our bill came to $35 before groupon and $6 tip. Wait staff never once came to check on us and begrungingly brought us to-go boxes when we finally got one of their attention. The service there has gotten to a point of comedy for us now, so we just learned to shake our heads and laugh. My gf and I love their chicken tikka masala (apparently it's a hybrid westernized Indian dish lol) and fish curry. We always order spicy and they actually make it spicy too. Price seems reasonable compared to other Indian eateries. Lunch buffet is pretty good too. But their service is dreadful... as others have mentioned here before me. Let's start with I'm a paneer person. I've tried to make that Indian cheese goodness at home and it's was pretty impossible tried 3 times. This place nails it! NAILS it! soft pieces of heaven that floats down your throat! I got the saag paneer but when i ventured in was looking for palak paneer - just as good folks not sure which I like better. For ppl who don't know it's basically a spinach spice mix w the most amazing chunks of cheese you'll ever have sever over the trademark Indian rice. The Basmati rice was spot on. Service was nice and friendly. My only thing is my rice pudding was severed w/o what I expected which was nuts, raisins and crushed cardamon which might have been my own fault bc I ordered "rice pudding" and not by its traditional name which btw was freaking great! No complaints the garlic naan was freaking amazing and I could tell it was made fresh. Naan beats the breaks off pita bread any day and boy this filled the spot for me. Over the past two years I have tried different Indian restaurants around the central Ohio area. Most offer daily buffets at a reasonable price with the option to try various dishes. The buffet option is the best value if you want to try unfamiliar flavors or spices. However, I return to New India for the consistent flavors and great value. I switch between the daily buffet or the nightly dinner. I love the Curry Goat and Chili Chicken. When I walk through the door the aroma alone brings a smile to my face. The owner and staff are consistently cordial and always willing to explain each dish. Overall an enjoyable experience that will have you returning for more. read more

i had to literally LOL reading other reviews. as most here, i experienced the same the few times i have been here. food: 5 stars, service: 1 star. much to the amusement (and sometimes creating fear of our food being spit in ;-)) of people with me i try to get ANY of the staff to say one friendly word during our time there. When asked for our order i will make it a point to ask the waitress first how her day was and if she is doing alright or pay her compliments - anything to get a smile from someone. NO SUCCESS so far. if anyone finds out something that works - please let me know. i want to go here more often but feel stupid spending $ here where i feel unwanted and quite possible supporting a business that gets their service personnel from human traffickers ;-) as one must suspect if they really hated their job this much they would just quit if they could ;-) OH and they HATE coupons !! they will try and argue with you saying the coupon / groupon / whatever you have is only valid on days where the sun is shining with medium wind coming from the west and one person in the party is wearing a green sweater vest - it is HILARIOUS ! read more

My favorites are the chicken tikka masala and the garlic naan. Sometimes I get a bowl of the masala sauce just to dip the nan in. The waitress was fine, but I just felt like we were being watched during our dining experience. I'm not sure if that's normal or maybe it was a slow day (weekday) and where we were sitting. We ordered 3 dishes, chicken tikka masala, a spinach dish, an eggplant dish and garlic naan. Portions are okay. The food didn't really stand out to me. I've been going to New India for over six years. It is hands down the best Indian restaurant in Columbus (and I've tried most of them). I've brought many of my friends and neighbors here as well and they are hooked. We call their food CRACK. We're not sure what the real CRACK is like, but New India's food is so awesome it is addicting. We literally go there once a week! Start off with Indian beer then onto appetizers. I would recommend the House Platter. For entrees, I would recommend Chicken Tikka Masala and Chicken Saag with Naan bread. Not very impressed overall. Mediocre at best. We got Chicken Tikka Masala and Chicken Tandoori. The food wasn't as flavorful as other Indian places we have been. There was barely any chicken in the Tikka Masala. The service was fast, but nothing remarkable, and they didn't seem too friendly. We purchased a $10 off $20 from Yelp before going; at first they didn't want to honor it because it was New Year's Day. We had to tell them there were no stipulations on the coupon for holidays. I've never ordered a sit-down meal at this restaurant, so my review and rating are only based on the buffet. When it comes to bang-for-your-buck, this may be the best Indian buffet around. Including taxes, it costs around $7.50 per person. There's a decent spread of options, from soup (typically lentil or chicken noodle) to appetizers to naan (both regular and garlic) to vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes (there are some mainstays, but at least one of each is alternated on a rather regular basis) to multiple dipping sauces to desserts. Both soups are rather tasty, and especially good on cold winter days. The dipping sauces range from mild to spicy, but are all rather tasty. My favorite of the entree options has to be the Chili Chicken. It's probably the spiciest of the buffet dishes, and appears to be a mainstay. As far as desserts go, I almost always save room for some jelabi. The service was lacking when I first started going to this restaurant, but has improved since that time. Basically the buffet was empty when I got there at 2:30pm, I had the last tandoori chicken and a little bit of butter chicken. They were out of goat (I came actually for the goat meat) and when I prompted the waitress about it she said that we are not adding more, we are out. I told the them that if your menu is almost empty then you probably shouldn't let me in or any other customers in that manner. This is my absolute favorite place to get Indian food. I have been going here since I was little with my mom. Their lunch is a very nice buffet, all you can eat, for a decent price. Comparing to other Indian restaurants in Cbus, this one delivers great food at reasonable prices and expected service. I like the food here better than Aab's, but I also like Aab a lot. We tried their buffet a long long time ago and had talked about going back for the dinner menu. Was flipping through yelp reviews and New India came up with a $20 for $10 deal offering a great opportunity to try dinner. The food was tasty, flavorful without being overly creamy and buttery. The potato naan was amazing I would come back just for that and anything with the tamarind sauce. And they have goat curry! I also like the mango lassi here better than most places. Now about service... I'm not surprised about some of the comments on service, but I'll have to disagree. Service is great in context of expectations from a restaurant like this. Think about it. You're not paying for a Michelin star or hootie tootie restaurant (nothing wrong with those... I do enjoy eating at high end restaurants just as much as a good hole in the wall). The waitresses tonight were helpful, explained things when we asked, refilled water without asking, never hovered, even reminded me I had a groupon before they printed the receipt... that's great service in any Asian restaurant if you ask me. I also think its a cultural thing. My favorite Vietnamese restaurants in CA I joke have great food/prices and "poor service" because they don't need the fluff (I'm Vietnamese, btw). Same as how I would expect my server at a hipster bar to be more boisterous. It's all about context. So keep an open mind... talk to your servers and ask them questions you may have. Decided to try this place because of the yelp deal being offered. I was not disappointed! Pretty standard prices for Indian food. Flavors were wonderful, had lamb vindaloo, chicken Tikka Masala. Also had the mixed grill appetizer, but don't think we would get it again, not that it was bad, but it wasn't particularly amazing. Staff was attentive as far as filling drinks goes and they had no problem taking my voucher. They were not extremely friendly but that sort of thing doesn't bother me too much.
