The portions are good for sharing, and the food is relatively flavorful. The waiter was really personable, but forgot a dish we ordered so we had to follow up on it a few times. My in laws treated me to takeout and I got to try the daal makhni, malai kofta, chana masala, tandoori chicken, naan, roti, rice - every single thing so darn delicious! Food here was awesome! Garlic naan is a must. Great garlic flavor and the testure of the naan was on point. Soft, fluffy, chewy, crispy edges, a little but of butter, garlic, and cilatnro flavor. So good! Loved the flavors of the curry...the palak paneer (spice level: mild plus -- sort of liek a level 2, between mild and medium lol) was so creamy and flavorful. The paneer had a nice sear to it so there was texture and creaminess. Also tried the goan shrimp curry (spice level: mild plus). Oh em geeeee...so good. Everyone was dipping into this one. There is a good amount of shrimp, and decent sized shrimps at that. The flavors of the spices with the creaminess of the coconut milk...such an amazing combination. Chicken korma (mild, zero spicy) was not my order but I sampled it. The curry flavor was also really delicious. I prefer the coconut flavor of the goan curry, but the texture and bold flavors of this curry was also delicious. Some bits of the chicken were a little on the dry side, but everyone still enjoyed it. I like spicy foods, but am not totally familiar with how hot Indian spices are, and wanted to be able to enjoy my food without burning my mouth off lol The mild and mild plus were reeeealllly mild lol Don't be too scared to try if you are sensitive to spicy. I could have done at least a 3/medium. Not sure if a 4 or 5 would be too much, but looking forward to going back to keep trying different levels lol Fyi, bonus: all the curries come with a side of basmati rice :) It was cooked perfectly and complemented the curries well. He was also great with the kiddos lol The service was fast, and all the workers are very attentive. We had our glasses of waters filled so many times. I can't tell you how many restaurants we've been to that you have to hunt down a waiter to get a water refill, short of walking in to the kitchen to get it myself. Our cups were never empty here :) They were also very quick with the take out boxes and clearing of the tables, and kindly let us know that there was no rush and we were more than welcome to stay and hangout. It was nice chatting with Ali and hearing him talk about creating an atmosphere to serve all the needs of everyone that comes in. There's a really homey feel to this resturant, and that is hard to come by nowadays. You get that at a lot of mom and pop shops, but that sense of "aloha" is not as common as is used to be. The only drawback might be the parking. There are only a limited number of marked stalls in front of the apartment building right next to the restuarant. Some of them are tandem so not sure if the restaurant will notify patrons in case someone double parks and blocks someone in. On the plus side, the parking that is available is free :) And can also look for street parking if the marked stalls are full. Also, not sure if it might just be me (because I tend to run hot lol) but it did feel a little warm inside...would've preferred it to be a little cooler while dining, but not a big deal ;p Overall experience was a 9/10 -- great food & phenomenal service. We just had an amazing dinner at New Kamana Kitchen, and it has been our favorite Indian restaurant in Oahu. We started with the veggie samosa--crispy on the outside, perfectly spiced inside--and it set the tone for the rest of the meal. The Goan shrimp curry was rich, flavorful, and had just the right amount of heat. The garlic cheese naan was warm, cheesy, and addictive (we probably could have eaten a whole basket on its own). The mixed grill was a highlight too--juicy, smoky, and beautifully seasoned. To balance it all out, the veggie salad and raita were fresh and refreshing. We ended with hot chai, which was the perfect way to cap off the evening. On top of the great food, service was excellent--Ali took such good care of us with friendliness and attention to detail. That's right! We ate Indian food in Hawaii. Although it may not seem like the most common thing to do, especially when there are so many great Hawaiian and other foods the island is known for, this was one of those times that we had to make it to Leonard's before they closed and didn't have a dinner plan in place. We were so hungry that we contemplated tearing into our little pink box of goodies, and that's when we spotted Kamana's kitchen in the distance. Ate at the original in downtown a few years ago and it was good. We were going to be in the neighborhood in Kapahulu, so we thought we'd stop by for an early dinner. Even though it was before 5pm, there were three other tables with patrons. All were East Indian so I figured that was a good sign that the food was authentic and tasty. Hubby ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala and I ordered the Palak Paneer (Indian cheese in spinach). Tikka Masala sauce was delicious. We ordered IT mild and it had just the right amount is heat fore us. Chicken has been marinated and roasted first, hubby would have preferred less marinated but that's personal preference. I loved the Palak Paneer, tasted so yummy. Nice and creamy, the paneer was firm and delicious, spinach was flavored well. Basmati rice comes with each entree order so we had plenty. It was plain, I think it would have been better with a touch of salt. Garlic Naan was good, but it wasn't piping hot and not fresh out of the tandoori oven. This is what made me give four instead of five stars - Naan has to be fresh! One order of Naan is one large naan cut into four pieces. There was plenty of food, we had enough left for dinner at home the next evening. Service is five stars. Friendly, courteous, attentive. Food came out quickly. Restaurant is spacious and nice. I feel the food tasted really good, the portions were generous, the shrimps were decent size and there was a lot of meat in the lamb biryani. The garlic naan was made perfectly- crispy but fluffy with sprinkles of garlic all over. Aside from the food being good, the service was wonderful. The waiter was engaging and made sure our water glasses were filled and he was able to talk story. He also knew when to let us eat. We're definitely coming back here. read more

Kamana has a location down town that I've been to, so I know their food was good before coming to this Kapahulu location. The Kapahulu location is located where Ka'ili cafe was. The parking situation is kinda weird, I'm always unsure of which spots in the neighboring lot allow guest parking, so I always friend street parking in the neighborhood and walk over. Inside isn't necessarily updated. They have the old style booths and tables. I like that they have big windows even though they overlook Kapahulu Ave. We ordered the samosas with sauce and chickpeas. It was an interesting mix of flavors that made the samosas a little soggy, so we couldn't take it home. But it was delicious and filling. We ordered a chicken curry and a lamb curry, both were flavorful and delicious and we ended up taking a lot home. The service was a little too friendly. They were very nice, but checked on us too often. If you like the original kamana, you'll like this place. Even if you just like Indian food, this is the place to go!! read more

Honolulu has had barely a handful of authentic Indian restaurants come and go during my lifetime. Still, I have had the pleasure of working under the Indian chef Ram Arora, who was credited for being the first to bring tandoori oven cookery to Hawai'i and his long-standing restaurant called "India House" and has taken cooking classes from another renowned Indian chef, Kusuma Cooray, who as executive chef introduced curry dishes to The Willows on Hausten Street. We'd also find Indian cuisine at the University of Hawai'i's East-West Center cafeteria and our other favorites, Café Taj Mahal and Sarithra. Because of the closures of some of our favorite local Indian restaurants, we often seek Indian cuisine wherever we travel, domestically and abroad. When we moved into the Kaka'ako neighborhood in early 2018, we often wandered into Downtown Honolulu to eat lunch. However, before moving, my husband's office was in Honolulu's Business District, so he introduced me to places he and his co-workers would frequent for lunch. I remembered how envious I was when he'd return home after work and bragging about the various cuisines, deliciousness, and fast, efficient service he and his co-workers experienced at these restaurants or cafes. Tsk. Luckily, he'd follow his Downtown food escapades by complimenting my home-cooked dinners. Otherwise, I would have insisted on leaving our kitchen alone. However, it wasn't until I read about Kamana Indian Restaurant on Bishop Street in the March 2018 issue of Honolulu Magazine that I suggested we try their food. We were hooked after just one experience and have been regular lunch and dinner diners at the Downtown location. However, hearing about Kamana Kitchen's recent expansion to the Kapahulu neighborhood, we made a beeline to compare the flavors and service. We quickly found the New Kamana Kitchen at the corner of Winam Street and Palani Avenue. This location was familiar to us as the former location of Kapahulu's Island Chopsuey and Haili's Hawaiian Food. Unlike Kamana Kitchen's Downtown site, this Kapahulu location offers about ten free parking spaces next to the restaurant on Winam Avenue. This larger dining room can accommodate larger groups and provide a paced sit-down eating experience. Their menu boasts several items that the Downtown site doesn't offer, and they don't provide lunch specials served on thalis since the Kapahulu dining scene is more family--or group--and leisurely oriented. Upon entry, we were greeted by the same female and male servers as in Downtown, who recognized us. The female server graciously seated us in a booth along a window and informed us about the newly added menu items. We inquired if they had a different cook from Downtown as we came in to congratulate them on the expansion and compare flavors. Luckily, she replied that she and the other male server and cook had been splitting their time between locations. We started our meal with an order of Vegetable Pakora, which consisted of fritters of shredded vegetables dipped in seasoned (chickpea flour?) batter and fried. The fritters reminded us of Japanese kakiage, but these mixed shredded vegetable appetizer bites became explosions of flavors when dipped in either the mint or tamarind chutneys for $7.50. Next, both our entrées of Butter Chicken or murgh makhani (tandoori bbq chicken pieces cooked in a rich and flavorful tomato, cream, and butter sauce) for $19.45 and Palak Paneer (a North Indian "curry" made with cubes of paneer or house-made cottage cheese, spinach, onions, spices and herbs) $18.95 were served in traditional Handi copper and stainless steel bowls along with bowls of fluffy basmati rice. We were comforted to find that our dishes' flavors, aromas, and textural consistencies were the same as at their Bishop Street location. We also tried their roti, or whole wheat flour bread cooked in a tandoori oven, two pieces for $3.95. It had a delicious, mild, nutty flavor and seemed denser than naan. We accompanied our meal with a refreshing glass of Mango Lassi ($6.95) and a hot cup of Masala Chai ($3.95). Service was friendly, welcoming, and well-paced, albeit considered leisurely in this new Indian restaurant. However, we're not complaining, as the leisurely pace fits better in the Kapahulu neighborhood. We'll be back! read more

This is probably one of my mom's favorite restaurants in town. We decided to have a late Mother's Day celebration and I thought what better way to celebrate than to order takeout from New Kamana. The food from here always hits and never disappoints. Some of my mom's requests were madras, korma, and tikka masala. I saw the option to order online and decided to add things to cart. I called the restaurant to see if they offered lamb madras, per my mom's request. The man who answered was very rude and made me feel like he had no idea what I was talking about. I mentioned how I was going to place an online order, but was wondering if they had lamb madras since it wasn't on the online menu. He made me spell it out and then read through all the lamb dishes that they provided, which I could already see. Kinda made me feel dumb like I made up my own dish. I guess New Kamana doesn't offer madras and my mom got them confused with Maharani. I hung up upset and continued to add other things to cart. When I got to check out, there was a $10 convenience fee. That strayed me away from ordering online, but then that meant I had to call the restaurant again to place my order... $10 fee or rude man on the phone?? I chose rude man on the phone unfortunately and I honestly regret it and should've paid the $10 fee lol. I got a lot of attitude on the phone and tried not to take it personally. My boyfriend ended up picking up the food for me, truly my prince charming. Other than that, food was great! My family was very happy. We ordered the palak paneer, shrimp korma, chicken tikka marsala, and butter chicken. All were a hit and great for leftovers as well. I will definitely be back, but please be nice... I ordered my favorite, the chicken tikka masala, and my husband ordered the saag paneer and later the sweet potato tikka masala, and we shared the bread basket. I literally looked across the table at my husband and said "the special secret ingredient here must be crack, because everything is SO good"! We're still having about it this morning, and I will definitely bring my parents here when they visit Hawaii next year. Service was great, and Bipin was very attentive. My husband shocked us all by ordering his food as hot as possible, then requesting extra chili sauce--and then dumping it ALL into his food! I don't understand how he's okay after all of the heat he consumed last night, but I'm now convinced that my husband isn't human. All the curries were very tasty and if you like spice the 4/5 level was perfect with a small burn. I always love to order papadum and pickles on the side cause it just goes so well with the curry spices. Servers were very friendly and accommodating. The booths were a bit on the small side as I had a hard time fitting and eating comfortably but if you can get a table that is probably better! I say this as someone who has eaten Indian food all over the world as well as at most if not all of the local spots here. What makes them so great? Quality of ingredients, good portions, good prices, and excellent service. My wife and I got our usual: kadai paneer, paneer tika, and palak paneer. All were fantastic, especially the palak. Felt like eating Indian food and this new restaurant got 5 stars on Yelp so I wanted to check it out. Made resies for two on a Saturday night. We didn't have to hunt around for parking because there were several parking stalls available next to the restaurant. Was greeted by owner Ben, an exuberant chap who made us feel welcome from the start. We ordered a simple salad, garlic naan, lamb kebabs and butter chicken. Each entree was accompanied by a large serving of basmati rice. This was way too much food for two people but gave us a decent sampling. The butter chicken was rich and flavorful, the lamb kebabs was a huge portion. Next time, I will request that it be grilled less as I thought it was a bit overcooked. Still delish and I'd order it again. As for the ambience, let me just say that it's a casual neighborhood restaurant. No need to dress up. It's in the spot that Haili's Hawaiian food used to occupy. I'm not sure exactly what is going on but Indian food is enjoying a bit of a renaissance in Honolulu as of late. For years it was basically Majarani and Himalayan and really not much else. In recent years the following have since opened: SPICE UP KAMANA KITCHEN (original location on Bishop St) TADKA INDIAN CUISINE NAMASTE INDIAN CUISINE This new place is a second location for Kamana, and has a few differences. They don't offer the lunch plates they have downtown, and unlike the original location, they are open on Sundays. The location is the old Haili's Hawaiian Food location in Kapahulu. I'm not sure if there is parking, but my understanding is there is limited parking on Winam Ave. I found street parking on Palani Ave. The decor is same as Haili's. The staff is incredibly welcoming and helpful. They were really wanting to make sure everything was good. A++++++ for service. We got: Baigan Bharta ($16.95) - Eggplant and veg stew. Was tasty. My mom wanted mild. I think it would have been better with more spice. Mixed Grill ($22.95) - Sizzling item with lamb, chicken, shrimp over onions with a curry dipping sauce. This was really great. I'd recommend it. Shrimp Tikka Masala ($22.95) - Was delicious. Lots of shrimp. Was a nice portion size. Garlic Cheese Naan ($6.45) - The breads is where this place disappoints. I could have sworn the naan at their other location was bigger sized and had more cheese. Majarani definitely has the best naan in Honolulu. Onion Kulcha ($4.95) - Was ok. But we just went to Namaste Indian Cuisine, and go the same thing. It was way better there. Gulab Jamun ($4.45) - Interesting, and tasty. Basically some kind of doughy cheese balls in a syrup. Not expensive, but portion is small. Pistachio Ice Cream ($3.95) - A must get item on the menu. Homemade, good portion size, and cheap. Its better than the Pistachio ice cream at Namaste. All in all, this place is a nice option. Service is amazing - unlike Majarani. The food is good. Only disappointment is the naan. read more
