After finding out New Line has a bison burger, I needed to try it on my bison burger circuit. Theirs is build your own, which takes away from the appeal, honestly, because I relish in discovering the chef's bison pairings. I chose a pretzel bun, Gouda, onion strings, and garlic aioli. I'll say that my combination worked well and the burger was cooked well, even though they didn't ask for my preference. I never thought much of this place. Looked like a high-end bar in a really strange part of town. But I was sure glad a co-worker recommended it. Since it's usually during working hours, my only experience has been at lunch. The three times I've been I had delicious and amazing burgers and the blue-cheese fries. They're all fatty-ass deluxe deliciousness and I cannot ask for a more delicious burger. But as it the case for all restaurants, atmosphere speaks volumes. It's loud. And some of that has to do with the decor -- or the lack of soft things -- so having a conversation with the person next to you is impossible in the main room. On the seats opposite the bar or the bar itself, you might have a better chance. And expect a wait. I've never been in and got a seat right away. But if you're a burger connoisseur, wait the fifteen minutes. The folks there (patrons and staff alike) are pretty sensitive to lingering. read more

New Line Tavern is next to the Green Line. Lake and Clinton...a perfect location for an after work bar. A place to get a couple of pops for the road. Good selection of beer, an OK menu of quick bites but all is lost with some terrible service. Yes, the selection of beer is decent, small but decent. The bar is fully stocked with plenty to choose from and the prices average. This is set in a nice atmosphere, although somewhat reminiscent of a hotel bar. There's plenty of tables, booths and stools to find a place in, and being new, every thing's nice. Ok...I can't do this but need to get to the punch. The service is bad. I mean, bad bad. The bartender is a college aged dude with the attention span of nonexistent. It took several shouts to get his attention ever and it never improved. He was great at refilling my draft when I went to the bathroom and without me ever asking for it. Thanks for that, it's got to be free because I didn't ask for it...no. At least the sliders were delicious with a nice punch of heat, but forgettable as it took 20 minutes after asking for the check for it to arrive. Wish I had tipped less. I have been coming here a lot lately. It's only a block away - it's like my new official neighborhood bar! I think New Line is mostly locals and people who work nearby. Every time I've been there, the crowd has been lively. If you're looking for a sports bar or something extra loud, you should go to the Jefferson Tap (which is a good bar!). New Line is maybe a bit more refined and subdued, yet still a good place to get a drink and even watch some sports. They have a decent beer selection. However, the beers are like $6, and they don't have any drink specials - not even happy hour. Argh. The food isn't too bad. I dig the garlic fries a bit. The sliders are tasty too. The other food is decent, though nothing has been terribly memorable. I much prefer the Paramount Room for good food in the area. Despite its relatively expensive drinks and average bar food, I still like New Line due to its atmosphere and location. It's a good place to unwind or to meet up with friends. It is certainly a lot cooler and more successful so far than the late Powerhouse restaurant. read more

We came here for after dinner drinks and this place was just MEH. The place was practically empty and after 11:00 PM our waitress went home for the night. I thought that was rather shocking for a Saturday night. I guess given the location it shouldnt be that surprising though. The wine selection is mediocre at best and they dont sell wine by the bottle, only the glass...annoying! Seeing that I am rarely on this side of town on the weekend, and its not a convenient happy hour spot for me, I don't really see myself returning. read more

Clean place with a good location to the station. We do our fantasy draft upstair every year and grab lunch here prior to help us make the best decision possible! Food can be hit or miss sometimes, avoid the south west egg rolls and cobb salad. Sandwichs and burgers are solid though. Decent beer selection, but would be nice to see more of a rotation. Brand new bar in the West Loop, just opened this week I believe. I stopped in for a beer since it was new. It's right under the Clinton Green Line stop. It was really clean inside, the people were friendly, and the menu looked great. I'm excited about this new place since it's only 2 blocks from my place. More like a bar that does a decent lunch business. The problem is that the lunch business is so go the place can't keep up. All of the tables were filled at lunch except for a tiny corner of the "communal table". We decided to sit at the bar. The order consisted of the New Line Salad, Santa Fe Chicken Salad, and the 4 Cheese and tomato panini with a side order of New Line fries. The panini was just OK. Really overdone on the cheese and I love cheese but it tasted more like a processed grilled cheese sandwich. The salads I was told were good, but disappointing that the new line salads didn't come with avocado. The fries had a garlic butter sauce over them with melted asaigo cheese. Could've used more cheese and less sauce since the fries were greasy. Serve was mediocre. They could use an additional waitress and/or hostess. The bartender, though friendly, was swamped. Our food came out in three sections, not very well timed. There were many business women sitting at the corner of the bar. The first comes in, in a suit, does a shot and leaves. Whew, must've been a rough morning. Two others come in, sit down at the end of the bar, and by time we left, they were on their third beer. Whew. Must be prepping for the remainder of the day. Looked like a secent selection of microbrews on tap. I do have to say that the prices were pretty reasonable for being downtown and in the loop. I am on the fence between 3 and 4 stars so I'll give the place the benefit of the doubt since they are new and hope they iron out some of the kinks. These were some of the best meaty wings I have had in the city. They don't have a million sauces to confuse you while ordering. The BBQ and buffalo sauce were excellent. There are eight wings per order and that is literally more than enough to enjoy. I will be ordering this time and time again! Very confused about the lowly 3 star review. read more

I had a much, much better experience with this establishment since I tried it the first time. While not a tavern person, I do like to take out food. So I will evaluate their food. The Buffalo Meatloaf I had was delicious - very tasty. The flat iron steak is good. The cheese quesadillas were very, very good. All in all, I found the food fresh and well put together. I will now consider them for take out more regularly. Now, a further word about the tavern part. When this place first opened, it was adequately populated with people. Now, there are a lot more people and they seem to be having a great time! It isn't way over crowded or anything like that, it is just a great place to go and enjoy a drink and company from what I see. I live around here and was eagerly awaiting this place's opening - it didn't disappoint. I've had the pullman burger and tavern wings - both were great. The pullman burger is well seasoned and tastes amazing. The regular burger is good too from what I hear. The wings were great too. They have tavern and regular hot wings. This long and narrow space was a good stop on the way home. I usually don't venture outside my comfort zone when it comes to local bars because I love Jefferson Grill and Tap so much but I made it over to this joint finally and no complaints here. Because this place is in my neighborhood, I really want it to be a happenin' bar. But it is not. And I don't know why. It is never crowded and you will have no problem finding a table. The burgers are ok; they're adequate. The atmosphere is like your typical bar with flat screen tvs mounted on the wall. It doesn't draw a huge crowd. If i was heading out with some friends to hang out, I'd go to a more happenin' bar too. One interesting thing: during the World Cup game between England and USA, my friends and I were in River North standing in line forever to get into any bar that we could get into. After waiting for 2 hrs and we were not making progress standing in line and the match was starting in 15 mins, we called up several other bars in the area to enquire about the wait situation. No luck with other places. Ah hah. And then I thought of New Line Tavern! We headed there right away. Lo and behold, that place was only half full! We didn't get the full soccer atmosphere at New Line Tavern but at least we got in, was seated at a table, and could eat comfortable on the table. read more

I give this place 4 stars for location, decor and potential. I think they are affiliated with Daily Grill on Lincoln Ave. That place has great food so I was hoping for better. I have to agree with previous reviews that the service is poor. We were there on a Friday evening about 8:30. The after work crowd was gone and there should have plenty of attention given to us. Our waitress seemed to disapear and forget to refill our waters and ask for 2nd drink orders. The food was very bland. I ordered the buffalo sliders and they were so tiny! I understand a slider is small but these were bite size. The spices and the sauce we just flavorless. Another one of our group ordered crab cake appetizer as his meal. Again, these looked like bite size balls! Hopefully this place works out their issues because it has the potential to be great! read more

My boyfriend and I have been here a few times now. We first came here because they serve Lagunitas, and jtap doesn't. Since the boy is a sucker for a little sumpin sumpin, we gave it a shot for a lazy friday night dinner. Healthy as he is, he got the veggie wrap, I think they call it the mediterranean wrap. It was delicious. The hummus was good, the sprouts were crisp, and I was jealous that he stole my idea of the entree. Being a firm believer in never getting the same thing as my dining partner, I tried the steak tacos. And they were good. No, wait, I think they were awesome. Um, actually, they might have been just ok. I'm still not sure. They were different. I've also tried their burger. Just a plain cheeseburger, and it was solid. Not out of this world or change your life, but damned good. Their signature fry, the new line or tavern or something, was borderline gross. Not worth the 75 cents. It's a good place for bar food, albeit a little loud, and sometimes the service is awful, but sometimes it's not, and the food is good, and the beer list is long. So I hate here after work with some work friends and have never been here before. I have walked by here so many times, so I was really excited to try it ! The drinks were good, the regular Moscow mule, old fashions, the classics that are hard to mess up. The food was alright. Let me start by saying that the best thing about my dinner at New Line was the beer, and I had Bud Light so that's not saying much. Our server was flighty and pretty much absent the entire evening. When we finally got her attention, we asked if we should try the Calamari or the Mini Crab Cakes as an appetizer. She quickly answered Mini Crab Cakes. They were terrible - bready, chewy, bland balls. Moving on - I had the Panko-Bacon Salmon Salad and my husband had the Pullman Burger. My salad was OK. I asked for the dressing on the side, the dressing came on it. It wasn't a salad that I would crave and go back for anytime soon. My husband ordered his Pullman burger medium, and it came WELL done. No cheese (you have to add that on your own for an extra dollar; we didn't realize; I believe a "signature" burger should taste it's best when ordered as is off the menu). The pretzel bread didn't do much for us either. Overall the sandwich tasted over-cooked and dry. To top it off, my husband ordered a second beer halfway through our meal and it never came. Not only did it not come, our server admitted she gave it to the wrong table. This place has a lot to live up to given that our neighborhood bar, Jefferson Tap, serves great food in an even better atmosphere. So far, New Line is not living up to the challenge. read more

Serviceable bar food. We saw that there was a new bar here and decided to drop in for dinner on a Sunday night. Service was good and the food was alright, but nothing to write home about. We both got "Pullman Burgers" which is their signature burger. A good bar-burger, but I wasn't wowed or anything. My burger was a little underdone (I ordered medium) but not outside one standard deviation. i think part of the problem is their "pretzel buns". It just sort of dominated the burger and I felt like I had a mouthful of pretzel the whole time. However, my girlfriend said she liked it. The big story here are the "New LIne" fries. Regular fries in garlic and asiago cheese. If you come here you should definitely get them. All in all if I lived closer I could see hanging out here for the occasional beer and bar food, but it's a little far from me for that. read more

A neighbor recommended this place as an alternative to The Jefferson last week. We love the Jefferson, but it's nice to work in a little variety sometimes. Turns out it was probably smarter for us to stick with the usual. I had the fish tacos (I know, but it was under the specials!) and the fish tasted dry but chewy. Side of guac for extra $ looked past it's prime and the rice was just plain dry. My friend had the pulled pork, and while it wasn't bad, it wasn't especially good either. My fiance had the Shrimp Po Boy - again, nothing worth lots of praise. Probably should have stuck to burgers...Oh, and the "special" New Line fries are not worth the upgrade. "Blah" tasting is being generous. Atmosphere is nice - not too loud, plenty of space, but we left feeling unsatisfied and were hungry in 2 hours. Just your average bar. TONS of TV screens everywhere you turn and lots of wood everywhere. The food is decent, portions are large, even the burgers. I would say it takes it a notch up from regular bar food, however, its more expensive than I would go to for bar food, and when Im drunk I dont really care that the food is marginally better than the average bar. Since I am training for a Marathon, I reluctantly pass on the beer selection and went right for the food. I ordered the Grilled Chipotle Chicken Breast Sandwich with sweet potato fries (up-charge). I really like this place. I even got one of those "repeater eater" cards since I live close by and come here often. LIKES: -- The place is not usually busy, which is nice because I hate rubbin elbows with random people. The food can be very good depending on what you order. The Sweet Potato Fries with chipotle aioli is awesome. The Jalapeno Wonton thing is damn good. The Black Bean Burger is one of the BEST I've ever had. I usually get it with a fried egg and I love it. If you want, get some garlic aioli with your fries. Also, they often have specials on beers (like Allagash White), which is a treat for people like me. Service has always been good. DISLIKES: -- There have been two instances where the chef screwed up, but no biggie. The salads... boring, usual crap. Wish they had a broader selection of top shelf whiskeys. When it's busy, you'll have to be patient. They need more staff. Overall, I'm going to come here often. It's a nice, chill bar and close to home. I like this a little bit more than Jefferson's and Paramount Room (although Paramount has some amazing tempura green beans). read more

Got a Chipotle chicken sandwich, Caprese panini and a burger w/ New Line Fries and a side of garlic aioli. The burger was great, cooked to temp, juicy, and on a great, soft pretzel bun. The LTO was fresh and crunchy. The New Line Fries were fine, the only difference between skinny fries & New Line Fries was that the new line fries had parmesan cheese on top and the skinny fries came with a tasty garlic aioli(go skinny fries just for the aioli for sure). The chicken sandwich was cooked well and also came on a yummy pretzel bun. Chipotle "glaze" more like chipotle mayo was good too and served on the side. The Caprese panini was very average. Lacked flavor and was just meh. Good service and nice outside seating. Tucked away from the bustling loop but close enough for a quick lunch. Ordered, ate, and paid in 1 hour. read more

Some say I am just cold by nature, but this place has a cold vibe to it. There must be a huge following of Guinness lovers coming here as it is always fresh and crisp just they way it should be. The place can get very loud which is also not my taste for a bar or hangout place after work. The food is okay nothing outstanding to write about. if you are into games then this place will certainly not fail you as there are many TV's at just about every angle to glue you face to. read more

I love this place...I work right down the street and have walked past several times. One day a coworker came in raving about how tasty the french fries were..after 10 minutes of smelling the aroma of the new line fries, I decided to place an order and try it out. I ordered the "Honeymooner" (turkey sandwich with bacon, mozzarella and honey mustard served on brioche) and OMG...it was amazing. Everytime I go in there its a handful of people having a few drinks at the bar, while I've yet to try a cocktail its definitely on my to do list. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because I called in an order once and when I went to pick it up they had no idea who took my order and I had to wait for them to make it. Other than that...the food is delicious! Try the Honeymooner, the Grilled Chipotle Chicken Breast and of course the skinny fries with garlic aioli dipping sauce...YUMMM! read more
