For the first time here I was really impressed. This spot is a bit pricey but ... free salsa and bean dip and two kinds of chips are served upon sitting down, also the servings size was what you'd expect at a Mexican restaurant. And yummy! I was happy with my chicken enchilada, on my combo plate. The chicken inside was cheesy, and saucy and so flavorful. I did find some cartilage in the chicken but for some reason this didn't bother me as it was clearly real chicken! The crunchy taco was cooked to crunchy perfection. My Chile relleno was also really good. I thought I would save some of it for leftovers but dang it, i nearly ate all of it! My boyfriends enjoyed the crunchy beef tacos but the meat hadn't been seasoned. They were crunchy but not much taste. His Chile relleno was the same as mine. Cheesy and delicious with a yummy red sauce. As we were leaving we noticed that in the kitchen cooking we're all woman. That is not something you see very often. I loved that! This hole in the wall Mexican restaurant has been in this exact location since the early 80's when my mom and dad used to take my brother and I there for dinner. Back then it was called simply "The Mecca" and was only one strip of booth tables in a small dining room. I remember as a young child feeling like the long wait to get a table was an eternity. But yet it was ALWAYS worth the wait. Now they have added another side to the restaurant including outdoor tables with umbrellas to block the sun. A new name change as well "New Mecca Cafe" as well as a fancy new sign to go with the new patio table look. But I'll tell you what hasn't changed and that's the food. Same delicious almost sinful bean dip that's served to your table with the chips and salsa upon arrival. As well as giving both regular corn tortilla chips and also a bowl of their homemade flour tortilla chips. Which I must say are the bomb.com! New Mecca is a Pittsburg staple. Before moving out here for work, I heard all about it and the bean dip too. It seems that the locals love it, so I wanted to see what it was all about. The first time I tried the food, I attempted to make a phone in order around noon and it was impossible to get through. So I went down there to place an order for my coworker and I, which took about 15 minutes tops. We both ordered the taco dinners, which come with two tacos with rice and beans. The crispy tacos were good and the plate was big and couldn't finish it all. Beware of bones, the menu even warns you that the shredded chicken comes with bones sometimes and 2/2 times, they were correct. It didn't bother me much, but beware. Also, chips don't come with to-go orders so I ordered a bean dip with chips, so we could get some and I could try this dip. The dip was like runny beans with enchilada sauce and cheese, not the best I've had but ok. I've been back once more and attempted to go today, which it was closed without notice. Their website says only closed on major holidays, bummer. I would say call first, if the phone is off the hook busy - they are probably there. read more

I attended a women's conference at Northgate in Benicia and lunch was catered by this restaurant. I had their salsa and warm bean dip with tortilla chips. Lunch was served buffet style with salad, chilaquiles, crispy chicken tacos, cheese enchiladas, beans & rice. Drove all the way from San Leandro for the hard shell taco and boy they were worth it. Arrived Monday evening around 6pm President's day and were seated upon entry. Sat at a booth overlookibg the neon Corona sign and was greeted by Paloma who was welcoming and has a contagious smile. I told her why I came and she suggested No. 3 which is 2 beef tacos, chili relleno with rice & beans. I opted to sub the beans for double rice since they served me 2 bean dips with the chips. Ordered flour tacos no lettuce no tomatoes, and I had two taco salads. Ordered small bean dip received large. Ordered flour chips received corn. When they then made my tacos, they made them with lettuce. So, they needed to be remade. They switched out the chips and refunded me for the bean dip. Pay attention here, so I know I'm a late bloomer but I never ate an Enchilada before and I came here to experience my first one. My eating buddy had raved about the Enchiladas so I was curious and willing to try it out. As inviting the restaurants apperance, the staff was hospitable and warming. Cozy and spacious, with quick service. I hear it does get packed towards the evening and weekends so I'm sure you should come early. Chips and their famous bean dip arrived right after our order was taken and I can certainly say it was worthy. Not your typical bean dip but also with queso. What did we order? Both half orders of the Cheese Enchilda and the Chicken Enchilada. Both meals come with a choice of salad or soup. My first bite?? Damn I've been missing out all these years because it didn't look delectable to me. I was truly wrong, not cheesy at all and my chicken was really tender. My buddy devoured his meal so no question there. TLDR: Got two super-sized wet burritos, one carne asada and one lengua and an order of chicken enchiladas to go, along with one bag of flour chips and their signature bean dip. This is what I liked: *Got the order right, despite it being a chaotic and busy Saturday with graduation parties and the regular weekend crowd in. Mr. Jenbert doesn't like beans in his burritos and neither burrito had beans. My mom asked for extra sauce on her burrito and it was essentially drowning. *The burrito sizes are YUGE, are a terrific value, and can feed 2-3 regular-sized adults easily. To further illustrate my point, the day laborers bought burritos in Orinda before showing up to work at my in-laws' house that same day. The Orinda burritos cost $12 each and it was an average-sized non-wet burrito that each person ate and finished individually. On the other hand, the super-sized wet burritos here are $11 apiece and my mom wasn't kidding when she said they're as big as one's face. They come stuffed with meat, cheese, beans, rice, guacamole, and sour cream. You get leftovers unless you're a 16-year-old boy or your name is Joey Chestnut. I guess his specialty is hot dogs, not burritos though. *Everything is tasty! The flour chips are just average by themselves, but once they are paired with that thick bean dip, they are amazing! Burritos were stuffed to the max and were delicious; some gristle in the meat, but everything else was so fantastically done. When I visited a Mexican friend in Four Corners section of New Mexico two years ago, her mom made chilaquiles for me, which I had never had before. I'd love to try the chilaquiles here sometime and see how they compare. read more

As a Mexican food enthusiast who grew up at a time when there wasn't too many Mexican restaurants and even taquerias I must say for my second visit here I was pretty impressed as far as it having an old school, California, Mexican restaurant flavor from my younger days. I remember the first time here I was not impressed but it really wasn't bad but that was about 6-7yrs ago to my recollection. I believed I probably had the steak enchiladas with ride and beans and I though it was decent at the time. And as far as reading my review I can only judge this place on my two visits. On my recent visit 24th June. I ordered the 1/2 order of cheese enchilada with an egg on the top with ride and beans. I could have sworn the server gave me the wrong order because my portion was huge and it came with a side quesadilla. Yes it was the half order, all for a $9.95. The meal was super yummy albeit a heavy meal. Growing up in a hispanic household I'll judge a restaurant on a few things. One refried beans. Their beans were very good but I would have preferred a little more moistness, but with a busy restaurant this can be a little difficult. Their red enchilada sauce reminded me more of establishments from the past, rich and yummy. And the two types of chips were a good touch, didn't think much of the corn chips but liked their flour chips a lot. And the Salsa was good. Service was good for a busy place and while we dined outside it was nice they brought a doggie bowl for my dog. I'll probably try it next year when I'm in the area. I live in San Leandro so it would be too far of a drive. But compared to my 1st visit I was more impressed this time! My 6 year old old daughter on the other hand ordered a bean, cheese, and rice bowl. Unfortunately the next day she was VERY sick! Took her to the doctor and she had food poison!
