It seems like this is a popular local spot. There were regular customers greeting each other as well as the staff. Ordering at the casual counter is quick. Take your number card and pick from seating outdoor or indoor. As I had my first few bites of the breakfast frybread with carne asada ($10.49)I was smacking my lips! The sauce was not too spicy for me to enjoy and it was full of flavor! Steam came out of the sausage burrito ($6.85) as I dug into it. Inside was overtaken by potatoes but with the salsa and when you hit the sausage it is nice! Regular drop coffee ($2.09)is all they had to offer in the cafe department but it surprisingly satisfied this espresso gal! !) I would have asked what the .59 charge was for on my receipt but noticed it after leaving. With the quick service and food served hot, I don't see why I wouldn't drop by again. read more

We got three different meals. Everything was good. I thought the carne asada was great in fact. Had a great flavor. Eat here quite often. Reasonably priced in today's economy. My favorite is the cheese enchilada combo that comes with rice and beans. I also enjoy their beef tacos. Their green sauce is very flavorful. I also like the red salsa that comes with the free chips. Limited inside seating but plenty of outdoor seating if that is your preference. I wanted to love this place. I was told to try it when I raved about another green chile establishment nearby. A few things that should have made me turn around before I ever tried it-first, sign in front said they had green chili. What? Chile with an I? Second, the smell that greeted us was the same slightly sewage-like smell from the old' Dos Gringos (iykyk). So onto the food- When I say I could eat tacos everyday, I mean it. I love them and make all kinds of them frequently. My husband and I didn't even finish half of ours. We couldn't figure out if it was the oil the shell was fried in or the shredded beef. It was just not good. My cheese enchilada was really only a bit warm and not melted. The red chile was pretty good, but the green chile was pretty dark in color. I make green chile sauce monthly and I could not tell what was in this sauce that shouldn't be. The refried beans, chips, and very fresh table salsa, were all good. The cashier was super nice, but we didn't love the choice of loud music playing, either. Just overall disappointing. So today, I decided that plain eggs and bacon just weren't going to cut it. So I decided to take a trip down to Gilbert and load up on some chile. Yelp reviews all looked pretty good so I took a trip down to Gilbert. New Mexican Grill is on Lindsay and Pecos, just 30 minutes from downtown Phoenix. A quick trip for me from Mesa but well worth the five dollar a gallon gas! The menu is right from the valley and the food came out hot and quick. I really enjoyed the red and green chile covered carne adovada that was smothered on a large piece of fry bread. I have no complaints about New Mexico Grill. Everything was good. Service, good; chips and salsa, good; food, good. While nothing was bad, nothing was great or spectacular either. The carne asada was cooked well and the toppings were fresh, but the fry-bread wasn't as light and fluffy as I am used to and the finished product was a little dry. The chips and salsa are a nice touch that you don't see often enough anymore, but the salsa was weak and not very flavorful. We decided to give New Mexican Grill a try tonight, after having checked out their menu a few times! We ordered a bean and cheese burro w sauce on the side (for my 1 year old), a beef tostada, a machaca fry bread, a couple tacos, and a grilled chicken chimi. There were four of us... We used Door Dash, so I'm not sure if perhaps this is where the disconnect occurred, but what we ordered is most certainly not what we got. For instance, the bean burrito was SMOTHERED in a red sauce, which ordinarily would be fine because it was delicious, but way too spicy for my toddler! We did not get the fry bread, only a side of machaca which was super weird. When I looked at the receipt from New Mexican Grill, the fry bread is not listed but the receipt from Door Dash does have it listed. (?) The bean burrito was good, the chimi was great. The guacamole (size medium) was TINY and brown/flavorless so do not recommend that. Overall, it was okay...will try again because I REALLY want that fry bread. read more

Just before my lunch break today, I searched for food to eat nearby. And this restaurant popped up on Google maps and was about a mile away from work. It had great reviews and 4+ stars. I have seen the photos of the foods others have taken and posted about this place. They all looked delicious. So, I trusted this place and I called to place an order for pick up. I ordered the enchilada combo. That consists of two enchiladas and refried beans and rice. My particular order was the combo, with ground beef in the enchiladas, chips and salsa, and a medium unsweetened tea. They said it will be easy in 10-15 minutes. I was ecstatic! Fast service! Especially, when I only get 30min lunch breaks. When I got there, the place looked inviting and comfy. The cashier was nice. The place was clean and smelled nice. Because I am a firm believer in presentation. And hoped the food was as great. As I returned to my office, I opened up the bag of food. I should have looked at it before leaving the restaurant. My enchiladas didn't look right. The tortillas were lukewarm and hard to cut through. They looked store-bought. On their website, it says that the enchiladas would have sauce and cheese on top. There was a small portion of bland rice and a small portion of the refried beans with little cheese. I had to use my fork to pry open the enchiladas; make sure there were more refried beans and the cheese. I was wrong. The chips seemed to be homemade and the salsa also. Those were delicious. But, unfortunately, the salsa came in a small 2 oz plastic container. As well as my sauce for the enchiladas. If you want more sauce and salsa on an order for pickup, you need to pay extra, apparently. And the enchiladas looked more like a taco than an enchilada. I had to try to wrap them up, individually as an enchilada. I called the company and spoke to two to three different people about wanting a refund. I explained this to the second person (female; possibly could have been cashier Jackie) on the phone. The first person was a man and I asked to speak to someone about my food. He passed the phone along. The last person I talked to said, "I'm sorry we don't do refunds. Since there was nothing wrong with your order; we don't do refunds." When I talked about how the enchiladas looked, she said, "Well, maybe they moved." Before her, (possibly) Jackie said, "They said they remember wrapping the enchiladas and the cheese is on the inside. And since you ordered them with beef, the cheese is on the inside." The clumped up cheese was on the inside of the enchiladas. And only in the middle. So, if I didn't order beef, then my enchiladas would have sauce and cheese on top??!! I had explained to them multiple times about what was wrong with my order. I paid in total a little over $20, including tip. But the lady on the phone said, "Well, that's what you asked for. And there was no mistake. We can't do refunds." I won't be coming here anytime soon. I really wish there was an option for negative stars or zero stars. *On my receipt, that is not how my name is spelled, FYI. read more

This place is under new ownership/management and the food quality, taste and consistency is no longer what it used to be. Ordered the red sauce burrito; tortilla was not cooked. It's like they took an uncooked tortilla, added a skimpy portion of shredded beef, wrapped it up and smothered it in a new version of their red sauce that was actually brown in color and tasted nothing like it did under the old ownership. Also, we asked for no cheese "inside" the burrito only on top and it was served with absolutely zero cheese at all; we had to ask for side of cheese. Pretty much ruined dinner for my family of 4, we all ordered the same thing. Will not be going back. My husband had been craving frybread so we were happy to stop by this place when in the area today! My husband got frybread with cheese and also carne asada tacos with rice. I got the veggie nachos, which was misleading as the only veggies on it were pico de Gallo if that counts haha. It wasn't bad just a little boring and I'd get enchiladas next time I think! Didn't realize they add beans inside however, very delicious refried beans! The steak was cubed plain steak pieces. It was okay, but being from Cali; I'm use to and prefer the carne meat that's marinated in flavorful spices that has been soaked for hours to absorb all those traditional additives. Their meat was cook well, however still wanting that flat top seared & chopped up texture of legit Carne Asada. I will say; their guacamole was a stand out in color, consistency and taste-it was spot on- really authentic.The red and green enchilada sauces were satisfying. My husband really enjoyed the green. Stated it had hatch green chilies in it which he enjoys and he was able to eat ALL of his. I couldn't finish my portion, so brought it home for another meal. This is a walk-up to the register and order and you seat yourself. The menu is posted at eye-level on the wall. The menu is extensive including all the faves. I ordered a extra large (one size only) horchata and a pork burrito. The food was delivered pretty fast. The burrito was huge and was drowning in verde sauce and topped with a thick layer of shredded cheese. It didnt say anything about that on the menu. Honestly not impressed. It was recommended by some bartenders nearby so we thought we would check it out when we were in the area. When we walked in we noticed it was small and simple so we were expecting hole in the wall - which usually provides amazing food. First up the service was not great... we were waiting to order at the counter for awhile and the staff was just standing there chatting. Then the food came out everything was very bland with no taste. We had chips, guac, crispy tacos and the grilled chicken burrito platter. It was about $30 and while we were full nothing had any flavor. I will say the food was very quick which was good because we were hungry. Neither one of us is planning on retuning here. I have been here a few times and have not been disappointed. Sure, there may be other places that have better fry bread or beans that I prefer, but, overall, I like the food here. The chips and salsa are some of the best I've had in a long time. I could probably sit and eat their salsa all day. Or, at least until they asked me to leave. On my most recent visit, I had the pork stew (Succulent chunks of pork with potatoes, corn, onions, tomatoes, red or green hatch chile sauce, with choice of frybread or tortilla.). I took my first bite and told my wife that it was dangerous stuff: nice and spicy with a good flavor and lots of chunks of meat. The bowl was large, a good value for the ~$7 that I think I paid, and probably 2x what I really needed to eat. But, I'd had a light lunch, so I powered through, dipping pieces of fry bread and enjoying it very much. The fry bread was more "pillowy" and less crunchy than other places I've had it, so it was more like a thick tortilla. I don't know if that was intentional, but it still tasted OK and did its job of sopping up stew broth.
