We went to Black Bear Diner for dinner with my two little boys and unfortunately had a really disappointing experience. I want to start by saying our server was great, the atmosphere was nice, and our food came out quickly, which we appreciated. We had only taken a couple bites of our meals when my boys needed to use the bathroom. I took them, and intentionally left my purse at the table so it was clear we hadn't left. When we came back, our entire meal had been cleared from the table. It was incredibly frustrating, especially with hungry little kids. The manager came over and apologized and offered to remake the food, but at that point my kids were hungry, upset, and honestly I was too. I just wanted to leave. I asked if they could comp the meal because this was entirely due to their mistake. The manager then said we should still pay 50% of the bill, which was honestly shocking. Paying half for food we barely ate because it was taken by mistake felt completely unreasonable. After I pushed back, they did end up comping the meal. Mistakes happen, and I understand that. What made this experience especially disappointing was the manager's lack of empathy and apology--especially as a mom trying to manage dinner with little kids. As soon as I walked in, it felt very rustic and bright. I loved the bear themed wood carvings, decor and all the cute gifts. I was surprised how busy the restaurant was. We had to wait a bit to get seated. I decided to try their biscuit and gravy with bacon and 2 eggs over easy. The bacon was kinda chewy with unrendered fat which was a turnoff. Even bigger disappointment was the biscuits and gravy. The gravy tasted so odd and off putting and the biscuits were huge but very dry and fell apart. Had a bite of hubby's French toast and it was the worst I've ever had. If they weren't so busy I probably would have mentioned something to the server but really wasn't in the mood. It was quite busy when we went around 11AM on a Thursday. I had the French toast with eggs and sausage. I also ordered a side of toast to soak up the eggs. The French toast was very thin and had absolutely no flavor. It was probably the worst French toast I've ever had. Wifey wanted to try their biscuits and gravy but she could not eat it as she said the gravy tasted yucky and the biscuits fell apart. The service was so so and was disappointing like the food. Food was awful. The avocado toast was a piece of avocado partially cut up on barely toasted bread. The tomato had a cut out of the side that looked like a bad part of the tomato and the fruit cup was slimy. The 1 egg breakfast hashbrowns were served uncooked. Since getting here in the Phoenix area, I have been to a Black Bear Diner three times. A friend of mine recommended it and I agree with him that Black Bear Diner is a great place to eat. You get a lot of scrumptious food for your money. I've had the biscuits and gravy as well as a veggie omelet. Everything was very good. The service is also wonderful. Our servers and cashiers were always a delight to talk with. They took our order without error and brought our food out quickly. Our coffee cups were continuously topped off. I liked the ambiance. The wall decorations, the outside decorations and even the souvenir store were great. On top of that the bathroom was clean and smelled so good. Today was my second time visiting this location. I got there around noon, restaurant was clean and was seated right away. My server Ana was amazing. She greeted me with a big smile and brought my drink right away. I ordered the Turkey Club, lightly toasted on white and crispy fries. She asked if I wanted to add avocado and I said yes, best decision ever!! My order came exactly as I ordered it. Ana kept checking up on me and brought my refill in no time. She was very attentive. I really enjoyed my lunch and will definitely be back. On my way out I noticed they have a gift shop with a huge selection of cute stuff. We've been to several Black Bear Diner locations around the Valley and in Southern California, and it's usually a safe bet for a typical diner experience. Unfortunately, this location was a big disappointment. We stopped in on a Friday around 9 a.m. with our family, two adults, a 2-year-old and a 4-month-old (baby in a car seat attached to a stroller). It was busy but didn't seem unreasonable, so we expected to be seated within a normal amount of time. There was no one at the hostess stand when we arrived. The checkout line off to the side was extremely busy, but no one ever acknowledged us or let us know what the wait might be. We stood there for close to 10 minutes without being greeted once and eventually had to leave. Getting two small kids out of the car is no small task, and having to turn around and leave meant putting our toddler back into his car seat, which resulted in a full meltdown after he thought we were going to eat. A simple "we'll be right with you" would have gone a long way. Because of this experience, we don't plan on returning to this location anytime soon. read more

I've always enjoyed Black Bear diner, and the steak and egg special is worth stopping in for. The steak isn't particularly great, but it's a satisfying meal, in a nice atmosphere, with very good service. They don't complain about substitutions, which is nice. $4 for a coffee or iced tea is sort of outrageous, but that's today's prices. read more

I made a quick stop for breakfast in the middle of my work day @blackbeardiner It smelled like home cooked breakfast in the parking lot, greeted and seated immediately, waitress was very friendly and went over some top favorites. I tried a few dishes but this stood out the most. Oversized soft fluffy biscuits, creamy savory gravy with the right amount of salt and seasoning, topped over that biscuit. Perfection! As I am eating I realize I didn't see the chicken and waffle plate on the menu and that was one that always hit for me. I'll definitely be stopping back for another brunch experience. I did have one bad experience but manager Cecily upon bringing it to her attention apologized and made things right. She was not working when I had a problem, seems when she's there everything is perfect. I do try to know when she's there as the diner seems to run smoothly when she's there. So I went to the blackbear diner this morning for breakfast ordered the Dave's omelette, which is bacon sausage ham in the in the omelette supposedly instead I got a scrambled egg taco all the ingredients spread across the top with the cheese on top of it not an omelette not even an egg taco just scrambled eggs with ingredients on top hashbrowns with cheese and up charge not gold. Staff are rude and uncaring about special needs of their customers. When I commented to the bus person that they shouldn't be slamming the dishes and glasses into the bucket and onto the table because of my tinitus and hearing affliction, we were asked to leave by the hostess. Met my family here for lunch and it was my first time trying Black Bear Diner. My family has eaten here before and so I had high hopes! I ordered the tri-tip dip sandwich deluxe style with a side salad. My first bite was "ok" the meat was very tough and kinda hard to chew. The second bite I got had the deluxe grilled onions and mushrooms. The veggies instantly tasted of cleaner as if they were sitting near bleach or some sort of cleaning product. It was very hard to get down. As I moved my sandwich out of the way to take a bite of my salad there was a long black hair IN my sandwich, to which would of been my next bite. I pulled the hair out and laid it on my napkin to show the server. Upon showing her, she acted as if she wasn't surprised. All she said was "want another one"? I replied "no I'm ok". (I'm not eating anything else from this place, are you kidding me?). The most disappointing part was that she didn't say sorry, no manager came over to apologize or see if we needed anything else. The tri-tip was comp'd off the bill, obviously someone was aware of the disgusting hair, but clearly no one cared. Red flag: that's alarming. I really wanted to be able to review this place more highly but just can't. The reason for the three stars and not lower is because they were willing to accommodate our large group at a late hour. But that's it. When we arrived, most of my party ordered water to drink. None of them could stomach the water. They said it had a weird taste and it actually made some of them feel sick. While we were a large group, our order took almost 30 min to come and that point the food was cold when it was served. Most of us did not finish our food and some did not eat it at all. So we decided to come have a late breakfast to get our day started. We had been to Black Bear once before and enjoyed it. When we arrived our server was rushing to take our drink order, which we totally understand when you're busy. Our drink cups were extremely dirty and the water tasted like dish water, it had a very odd taste. We asked another server for new cups since our server disappeared for 20 minutes. We placed our order and our food arrived 30 minute later; then when our food arrived my plate was super cold and missing the extra items I ordered. Again we tried finding our server but we could not locate her for 20 minutes; then we finally try to flag her down she disappeared again so we asked another service if they could heat the potatoes since that was the only thing that was appetizing at this point. Had a coupon for a free February pancake, so ordered that and a ham steak for breakfast. Very large, tasty ham steak with no fat nor grissle--just tender ham. The free pancake was actually two extremely large fluffy pancakes with butter and maple syrup. Way more than I could finish. I was seated very quickly and the service was friendly and fast. The food was very tasty. I was stuffed full. The check out was quick and just slightly over $5 for the a la carte ham steak and zero from the huge amount of pancakes. The cashier is located by the entrance/exit to the store and surrounded by Black Bear merchandise. The tri-tip was the toughest and chewiest that I've ever had. I had to take out a sharp knife to cut it, the serrated knife they gave me would barely cut it. Where to start off with Black Bear Diner?! My boyfriend and I have been regularly going to BBD for a couple months now and it really never disappoints. We usually go to the Chandler BBD on Alma School and Queen Creek Rd but we've been to the Baseline location and it's just as good. This specific day I tried the blackened salmon with steamed broccoli and their country mashed potatoes. I was a little nervous at first to order it bc it's easy to ruin salmon. I was pleasantly surprised how tender it was. Crisped perfectly and didn't taste "fishy" lol. The mashed potatoes were PERFECT with that white gravy mmmmm....I ate it so fast! My boyfriend gets the usual vegetarian omelette with roasted potatoes and side English muffin. He always adds grilled chicken for extra protein and they always make it delish for him. He eats pretty much everything! Also I can't forget we always order a bowl of chilli as an appetizer and love how savory it is! We also order coffee and ice tea too. The service at BBD is always so sweet and they make sure to greet us right away even if it's busy. The ambience feels like you're going to your grandmas house. People from all walks of life dine there and it feels like home. No judgement, just good food. We ended our meal today with blueberry pancakes (we share bc it's a lot). Sure, he said. He came back with gravy and all was well.....until my bill came. He charged me $1.10 for a ladel of gravy! First time here. We really enjoyed this place. It has a warm inviting atmosphere. Our server, Cecily was fantastic. Food portions are huge. The food is okay. I had the chicken fried steak and my wife had the California omelette. Most of the food had a serious lack of seasoning. The country gravy had no seasoning.
