This place is a joke, even the kaiser employees. My mon was sent there after a break in her arm. The first day I got a call from the Kaiser person saying my mom needed a ride for xrays, ok when? 2 hours from now. Uhhh ok I'll just quit my job and be right there. When I went to see her she was totally Incoherent and uncared for. They told me she wasn't eating, of course, because with that tough as leather chicken you had served could not be cut with one hand maybe. I asked one of the staff assigned to her whi was the person she wanted and the her reply was I told her he wasn't here" ok so who is here that has the same postion(physical therapist) all she did was go back to party in the next bed. She had to be moved to change the diaper, the woman turned her over by her broken arm, even after she told her that arm was broken. The next time I visited she was tired she could not stay awake even after being hoisted out and put into a chair! What undocumented drugs were they giving her to make that happen? Do not send a loved one here.! My daughter had to be there for a week following a serious knee injury. It's not clean, has a terrible smell from the moment you walk in. Understaffed and overcrowded. My daughter was brought by ambulance from Kaiser. No one came into her room or even acknowledged we were there for at least 45 minutes. Her pain meds were late. One night a nurse came in to check her blood sugar. Except she's NOT DIABETIC!! Twice this happened. When we complained we were told the nurse had misread the chart. The only saving grace is the PT people. Kaiser needs to step up and stop contracting with this facility. read more

My opinion of St. Joseph's Hospital has now been severely tainted; and I am now under the impression that all they really care about is the all mighty dollar. Do yourself and your loved one favor and keep looking. This place is terrible. My mother stayed here for 9 days. The moment I walked in, I got an uneasy feeling. I came everyday to see her. 1. On the first night there, I heard a man calling out for help. He was down the hall and I could clearly hear him from my mother's room. No one came! He was literally yelling out for help for 5 minutes at the very least, and no one came. I decided I would walk down there and check it out, and I was right. No one was helping him. He was struggling to get up from his bed and couldn't reach the button to call for assistance. I glanced over into the room next to him and there was a "nurse" in there. I let her know that he needed help, since clearly she was deaf, and she glanced into the room, shrugged and mumbled it wasn't her room, and that was it. So I then went down the hall to find two other "nurses" chit-chatting, and let them know about the situation. They literally rolled their eyes at me, and continued to finish their conversation. (Meanwhile, the guy is still screaming for help and saying he doesn't know what to do). About 5 minutes later, a nurse finally came into check on him and he wet his bed. They acted annoyed and bothered by the fact that they were now having to change out his bedding. That was just the first night! 2. It took the doctor 5 days to finally evaluate my mother. We were told he would do that the first. The "evaluation" was a total of 10 minutes. Seriously? 10 minutes? WTF! We're paying $540 a day for this? When I asked why it took it so long, I was told it was because we weren't paying through Medicare. I guess Medicare requires a doctor to see a patient within 72 hours. Since, we weren't through Medicare, there was not a requirement to do it in a timely manner, so we were at his mercy. When we would ask when he would be coming by to see her, we were never told a time or date. We were just told, he had odd hours and that he comes randomly throughout the week. Dr. D***shnia, you should be ashamed of yourself. I guess common decency gets pushed aside when money is involved. 3. When my mom was admitted she did not have one sore on her entire body. When she left she had 3 bed sores. 3! That should tell you right there the kind of attention they are given. 4. When I was saying goodnight to my mom, a nurse came in with meds for my mom. She had never asked for any and they tried to get her to take them. I told them, no! I guess a drugged up patient means they have to do less. There are many other things I witnessed, but I figured I should stick with the most important. If your family member is there, transfer them out of there. They will refund your money. P.S. I am going to be reporting this facility to the BBB. If you have a similar experience, please do so too. This place really should be shut down. read more

My father was recently sent here and what a nightmare. At first glance they look great, lots of staff is present at all times. The reality is quite different! My father had a heart attack and was there for rehab and was confined to a bed. The staff let him sit in a dirty diaper for hours and as a result go a bladder infection and had to return to the hospital to treat the infection. Nobody helped him eat when he could not use his hands and they were so rude. I would not recommend them to my worst enemy. read more

I did not give "as good as it gets" as I've only experienced New Orange Hills rehab center. As far as I'm concerned, it's A#1. My wife spent nearly three weeks under the watch and care of the staff of this fine establishment. Understand, it can be an unpleasant experience at times, given the various stages of illness the residents are in. My wife received, in my humble opinion, superb physical therapy sessions. Kevin, Luis, and Romy were diligent in their duties, encouraging my wife to work harder, reach higher, so that she could be more of a help to herself. The nursing staff, Jessica, Rosa, Cory, Nikki, the CNAs, Jas, Jely, to name just a few, everyone did their best to make my wife and myself as comfortable as one could be in this situation. We are home now. We will take the instructions, the encouragement, the kindness shown to us, and make our way forward into our new future. read more

Poorly treating patients. Handling patience rough while bathing. No checking on patients to use the restroom or change diapers. Lousy food.

Please do NOT consider putting anyone you love or care about into this wretched **ll hole! I had the misfortune of spending one night there after being released from the hospital for open heart surgery (I'm only in my early 50's). The other comments are accurate, the facilities ARE disgusting. The entire place is very dirty and rundown. My bathroom connected to a shower room which was filled with bins of dirty, stinking bedding. The door between the 2 rooms was wide open during my entire stay. The comments about the noise levels are also correct. My room was 3 doors down from the nurses station. You would think it was Mardi Gras, it was so loud. Finally, around 11 pm most patients had gone to sleep and I thought it would be quiet, but the nurses talked and laughed so loudly that I finally got up (remember, open heart surgery less than 1 week prior!) and walked over to asked that they please keep it down. I reminded them that they had patients that could hear (not all were senior citizens with reduced hearing) and who were trying to recover from traumatic surgery and would appreciate their consideration. I received a few dirty looks, but begrudgingly the one of the nurses said "they would try to keep it down." For a convalescent home, the facility is not set up to accommodate a patient with limited mobility. For instance, the bathroom fixtures are all placed very high, which in my normal healthy state, would not be a problem, but due to my heart surgery, I couldn't raise my arm high enough to reach the light, the paper towel dispenser, etc. As with a previous reviewer, I also had a mix-up with my medication order and was in agony for hours until I demanded to see a nurse practictioner (I had asked/pleaded for hours prior to that, but was told there was no one onsite.) After 7 hours of being in excruciating pain, I finally received the correct dosage and was just starting to doze off, when a young woman comes bounding into my room and flicks on the light. She informs me that she is the "activity person" and wants to know what I would like to do for fun that day. Are you kidding me???? I'm am there to recover, NOT to play bingo! Within the next 2 hours, 4 other staff members stopped by to introduce themselves and to welcome me to their facility. Each time, I was awoken (could they not see that I was sound asleep??) Had I not been trying to get some sleep after finally getting some relief from the endless pain I had experienced, I would have appreciated their friendly gesture. Instead, I felt that they were completely ignorant of the needs of a convalescing patient. And, to that point, I want to be clear. They DO market themselves to the hospitals as a convalescent home--not just a retirement home. So, the expectations is that they would be able to continue the care similar to that of a hospital: Cleanliness, quiet environment, soothing lighting, additional pillows (especially important for post-surgeries). Only wake patients if they require medical attention--NOT to tell them what's for dinner that night! Yet, the room I shared had dried blood droplets on the blanket at the end of the bed. The bed looked like it was from the 1940's and could only elevate partially. I had 2 flat pillows and was told there were no others available. The room, which I shared with 2 other patients, had one common bright light. There were small, dull lights for each bed; however, unless all 3 patients agreed to it, the overhead bright light for the room was kept on. It shone in our eyes and made it impossible to try to sleep. To give you more perspective, when I finally made it to my home, I was under the care of various homecare medical specialists (PT, nurses, etc.) When I told them that I had to stay at New Orange Hills for my first night of being released from the hospital, they were shocked. Unanimously, they all agreed it was a horrible place. One even said, she would not even take her dog into that place, let alone anyone she loved! I couldn't agree more. The only positive comments I could make are that the nurses who actually cared for me and my roommates, were extremely kind and caring (this does not include the rude and inconsiderate nurses I spoke with at the nurses' station.) And, although I wasn't hungry during my short stay, my roommates told me that the food there was very good. They were very surprised and relieved. Other than that, I cannot find anything positive to say. I was so distraught during my stay. I feel badly for anyone who has to be there for even one night. There needs to be drastic reform if places like that are allowed to take in people under pretense of offering them good care. My mother is in a highly rated retirement home in Simi Valley. I know what good care looks like. Their facilities are very clean, rarely any smells, decent food, very kind caretakers and nurses. New Orange HIlls should be ashamed of themselves and should be penalized heavily until they reform themselves. read more

I was there recently because i couldnt walk because of blood clots and they got me to do physical therapy and i am now walking without cane nurses did seem over worked at times but they did come as fast as possible if i had to complain about anything it would be the call buttton it seems like when you push it only the nurse assigned to your room will react so if your nurse is busy it might take a little time but the physical therapest were great. As far as physical therapy is concerned, they're great. I feel like they really focus on the needs of their patients. But, the reason why I only gave two stars is because there is a thief floating amongst them. How anyone could even think about stealing from a guest whose visiting a sick family member is beyond me. I was told by the Case Manager at St. Joseph's of Orange thaat ths was a great place for rehabilitation. Shame on you! My husband was there recovering and ended up with a serious life threatening infection that ANY doctor or nurse should have sent him to the ER. They didn't and he died as a result of incompetence. Please do not ignore the reviews like I did! I only had a few choices given to me by the hospital for my moms care after heart surgery, this was the closest to me and all the choices had pretty bad reviews so I chose this one due to location. The bad reviews were VERY true. I have so much guilt for choosing this place. The very first nurse I met when I came to see my mom after her arrival was literally chewing her gum with her mouth open and very rude when I asked about changing my moms diaper. My mom the nurses were impatient with her and she had to wait hours to get changed almost every time. The air conditioning was broken so they had dirty old fans running on people with open trachea wounds. My mom ended up getting a staff infection 4 days after arriving. She was feeling sick and trying to get help but no one answered the call button so she tried to get out of bed........they found her on the floor, not breathing, she was resuscitated and rushed to the hospital. This place should be shut down it is old, most of the equipment appears outdated, it smells strong of urine, the patients are shoved in rooms like sardines ( more patients = more money) at the expense of the patients health, comfort and safety. read more

There should be a negative thumbs down for this place is filthy. Here my roomy goes in from having a neck and back surgery. First day was creepy and odor funky kind, that you smell the germs. However after a little over a week of agony and mistreatment of filth day after day visiting. Roomy laid in bed in her own feces buzzing for help 30 mins go by, 1 hour goes by, 4 hours go by and not a staff in sight. The food is same meal everyday of the week every week etc...ugh Than just a few days ago roomy had a follow up w surgeon doctor to check on healing of area operated. OMG!!!! roomy was rushed to ER from doctors office for an emergency operation, because the operated area was severely/overwhelmingly infected. The doctor was in disbelief of what he had seen, there he had addressed his staff to ban all his patients from being admitted to NEW ORANGE HILLS after seeing that. The whole time she was there not one, NOT ONE! of the NOH staff bother to do there job to clean the neck/back area...NOT ONE!!! so why are these lazy people being paid? enabling the healing to be disabled possibly fatal. I mean I wouldn't even put my own enemy in there. Save yourself from being worse if not fatal from this facility. NOH!! i sure hope you folks get a suprise visit from the health dept because yall just dont give a damn. read more

This is the place Kaiser farms you out to after you have I & D of a diabetic foot ulcer. They can run your IV antibiotics, change your wound dressing, keep the wound vac running, keep your foot elevated, feed you and have you do physical therapy. The PT is especially helpful when you're big and bedridden. The place is a little old, but absolutely EVERY STAFF MEMBER from RNs to the kitchen help were unflaggingly helpful and kind. Like Yelper Cheryl G., I don't support the negative comments people make about staff not answering call buttons quickly. My experience was that mealtimes were bad times to ask for assistance. The reason: staff is trying to get everyone fed! My 7 1/2 days at NOH were not that bad. read more

My husband was a patient at Orange hills sometime back the physical therapy was good staff very friendly, but loud they spoke very loudly in the corridors without any consideration for patients in the rooms..My other complain was that every thing in that place is so old and falling apart beds are old and creaky the linolium floors are cracking in places, the door frames are falling apart, this facility needs to be completely revamped when we were there they were changing carpeting in the corridors but the whole place needs to be redone even the tiles in the bathrooms are splitting at the edges. The physical therapy did help him quite a bit, for which I am happy..but I will not go back there as its not safe and its very unhygenic as its just falling apart even the medication poles were so old they would not even move. This place needs a major face lift. read more

This facility is fabulous. I had never been in a facility where the vibe is sooo positive. It is very obvious that the staff actually likes their jobs! I had a rare infection that had me in Kaiser hospital for 3 weeks then I transferred to New Orange Hills for 4 weeks of rehab. I was treated as if I was one of their own family. This goes for ALL STAFF. They were kind, respectful and attentive. I know my recovery would have not been so successful without their care. I especially want to thank my wound care nurse Rosa - she is truly a gem! I highly recommend this facility - you will be lucky to get such care. God Bless them all! read more

Do Not take your loved ones here!!! This place is not fit for a cockroach. My dad was brought here to finish recovery for a UTI infection on Thursday April 5th 2018. He was to get rehab for losing strength in his legs from the infection. His mind and appetite were execelent when he arrived from Saint Joseph Hospital. The staff did not give him any help with water so he got very dehydrated within a day. The food looked like puke on a plate. My dad was now not eating except for what my my mom and I could get Into him. Less than 100 calories. This would have been 3 days with no nurishment. Had to argue with the staff to get extra blankets. On Saturday, I could not wake my father up his eyes were rolled up in his head. Thought he was close to death! Took over an hour for anyone to answer the nurse call button just to go to the bathroom. They want you to die so they can get someone else in and get more money. I can go on and on and on. We were able to get dad to a wonderful facility on Monday. The staff is happy and the patients are happy too. Dad is up and walking the entire length of the halls at Brookdale senior care in Yorba Linda. This is within 14 hours of arriving at the new facility. PLEASE DO NOT TAkE Your loved ones to new orange hills rehabilitation center!!! read more

We moved my mother here after her 2nd hip surgery because the last place she was at (which had a higher rating) ignored major signs that my mom's hip was dislocated. We all were pleasantly surprised. The doctor on site immediately reaches out to introduce herself to family & works with the patient closely to ensure progress. We also found the staff to be extremely responsive & work hard to please. This stay for my mother was much better. Also, a nice touch is their aviary - makes for a homey environment & a little respite for patients. They also work with family with co-pays. You pay at the end of each week of a patient's stay, so you're not overpaying or paying in advance. One negative is they do not have enough parking. Other than that, I highly recommend this facility. read more

I am so thankful for New Orange Hills! My grandpa had a stay there recently following a major stroke. I'm really to thankful for the guidance of the clinical team, the CNAs, LVNs, RNs and the physical therapy team. With all their help my family and I were able to bring him home. The case manager Natalie was amazing and super helpful. She helped arrange home health and kept us informed on his progress throughout and potential time frame for when we could bring him back home. Maria met us at the hospital to provide information about New Orange hills and guide us through the process of a skilled nursing facility. She was great at explaining to me how my grandpa's Medicare worked and the type of benefits he can receive with Medicare. We weren't well versed in Medicare, but she was so helpful in that aspect. The facility came highly recommended by my grandpa's physician at the hospital. We are forever grateful for the caring people at New Orange Hills! read more

This is a facility that is below Calif. standards. Most of the time patients have to wait 1/2 hour at least before receiving assistance at all, let alone bathroom help. They are understaffed and extremely noisy, with yelling and screaming all night long from patients, and staff gathered in hallways talking loudly after 11 pm. Their physical therapy staff are however very good, but the facility itself has gone downhill greatly. I escaped to a better facility. It was horrible there. read more

DO NOT BRING YOUR LOVED ONE HERE! This place doesn't even deserve 1 star, but it's the lowest rating I can indicate. The place is horrifying. My friend is a patient here. There are ants in her room. I saw a cockroach near a garbage receptacle in the hall. When I visited her today, I found soiled Depends thrown on the floor in her room. I'm frequently with her for 3 hours and no medical personnel comes in during that entire time to shift her position (she's paralyzed) or to change her Depends. There is medical equipment stored outside the facility. I wonder if the cockroach made its way inside when they brought put some of that stored equipment back inside. Twice my friend has returned to the hospital twice from infections she got while at New Orange Hills. Do not be enticed by the attractive exterior of the building. read more

Trying to get a Dr. to sign a death certificate for a deceased, is not easy with this facility. Have called several times for assistant from the nurse's there. The nurse put the phone down and continued talking to the other nurse's. The reason I know this is because she didn't put me on hold. I heard them talking and laughing while I was waiting. The deceased died on December 9th. It is December 27th. Still no signature from a doctor on the death certificate. Family is still waiting. I also don't understand the bad reviews on New Orange Hills. My dad is 96 and spent 13 days here after a stay in the hospital. You order your meals ahead and it is fresh and my dad said it tasted good. He had PT and OT 6 days a week. PT was 3 times a day and Jerry showed us tips on how to help my dad when he came home. Their goal was to get him home which was a plus. The staff is very friendly and helpful. I have a friend in the healthcare industry and she told me the key is to visit as much as possible and ask questions. Don't just accept something if it doesn't seem right to you. I talked to the nurses, PT and OT, and those who do the daily regiment for my dad. If someone did not know an answer then they found out and got back to my shortly. I never got a bad attitude from any of the staff here. Everyone smiles and is very helpful. I did have questions and concerns and they were answered to my satisfaction. There is no perfect place for a loved one for obvious reasons. We chose New Orange Hills because it was recommended by a friend and doctor. It was also close to our home. Again remember family visitation(as much as you can) and asking questions is the key. read more

My dad has been at New Orange Hills for 2 1/2 weeks, he's now almost ready to come home. In fact he spent a few hours at home today. The PT and OT therapy are great, they've gotten my father upright and walking again. The people there care about the patients. Yes, sometimes we have to wait for the CNA's, or for people to clean up the room, but this doesn't adversely affect his care. There are several lounge areas for the patients to use, and there are computers for them to use also. I have experience with two other care facilities and NOH is head and shoulders above them, I can't recommend NOH highly enough. read more

I made a comment some time ago and see i received some feed back.... Brain stated not supporting the neg. comments of not answering the call button fast enough, i'm not saying the didn't answer it fast enough i'm saying they didn't give my mother in law a chance to even push it... Wickedly put it out of her reach because she was pushing it to many times (i guess) and as i was looking up there number to see what was going on i saw another post of a picture where the proof was of them doing the same to someone else.... I didn't mention in my first post i saw staff on break smoking weed in the parking lot- Might be the reason why the didn't want her pushing it so much- She was recovering from cancer and a lot of pain- Now i didn't make this happen just stating facts- Very glad not everyone gets or sees this kind of treatment across the board but trust me it happens. read more

Avoid this place, especially if your loved one will be in a nursing facility for more than a few days. Unfortunately, dad was admitted here after his stroke. The place is understaffed and borderline negligent. Please make sure that there is a relative or friend with your loved one in the room. The idea of having my Mom stay in ANY skilled nursing facility in California made me cringe. However, the team at New Orange Hills was incredible. The Executive Director, Steve Flood does an incredible job keeping his staff engaged and focused on patient care. This is a tough industry to work in and wages industry-wide do not correlate to the importance of their work- yet Steve's team always demonstrated out of the box care and concern for my Mom. Leticia in Activities was very creative about how to engage my Mom even though she was unable to get out of bed- coordinating with my cousin in New Jersey to ensure that they could chat on the phone once a day. Kevin in PT was able to coax my Mom through her therapy so that she was able to get in/out of a car more easily and walk so much more safely- even though she had refused to exercise all of her life! Nicki her nurse would often station herself close to my Mom's room when she was updating her case notes- just so my Mom could hear a familiar voice. Lastly, Zora, her case worker was one of the most efficient, caring people going out of her way to find creative solutions to meet my Mom's care needs. read more

This place is NOT state of the art like they advertise. It is barbaric. And if you are here making sure your loved one is being taken care of, they get mad. Physical Therapy and OT is wonderful. Most of the LVN's are also very kind. It is not their fault they are overrun with patients and not enough staff. 45min to answer a call light is unfortunately very true. Do yourself a favor and never ever go to this place. The state needs to shut it down, and fast. Just look at the fines! All the administration cares about is filling a bed. My elderly mother recently spent over one month staying at the New Orange Hills facility after breaking her leg. Unlike previous reviews, I can honestly say that my mother was treated with the highest level of care, and was constantly given the utmost attention. She truly enjoyed the interaction with the staff, and all members of her rehabilitation team were truly professionals in the strictest sense. While many staff members attended to her various physical needs, there was one individual in particular who went above and beyond. The singular person who stood out the most was Mr. Vincent Amador. Vincent spent countless hours pushing my mother beyond what she perceived to be an acceptable level of physical performance, and encouraged her to keep going the extra mile in each of her many therapy sessions. My mother has attributed her rapid recovery to Vincent's constant motivation, and consummate professionalism. While others have given New Orange Hills mediocre (or lesser) reviews, I believe the staff at this facility to be a genuinely caring and professional cadre.
