Donut were stale and she tipped herself 20%?? I used to love this place I don't know what happened in the past few months. Their donuts used to be perfect, fluffy and nicely glazed. Today I got a dozen donut holes. They are stale and the glaze are completely melted and sticky. What's more baffling tho is the service. When I paid for my donut, before I can tap what tip I wanna give, she tapped it for me. She tipped herself 20%. I think I should have a say in that no? The donut holes are $3.64. Tip is only $0.73. I don't want to argue on that. But I was definitely flabbergasted. The place is still clean as usual. But donuts are not the same and I won't be able to finish the donuts. They have a great selection to pick from--your traditional, standard flavors to some more eclectic tastes. :P I came on a Sunday morning around 0730 and there were still many donuts to choose from. I went with the dozen mix and got a variety of original glaze, maple bacon, lemon custard, cinnamon, oreo, and fritters. My fav was definitely the maple bacon! Staff were kind and efficient. The lady helping me was very sweet and threw in a few donut holes on the house. They also have breakfast croissants! I will be coming back to try one of those. I'm not sure if there are a new bakers or if this place is under new ownership. The flavor has definitely changed.They used to rival Marie's on Freeport Boulevard. Unfortunately, I was here a few weeks ago, ordered a dozen donuts and was shocked at the cost; almost $30 for a dozen donuts. I didn't choose any fancy or any large donuts or apple fritters. In addition, the donuts tasted like they had been cooked in warm oil instead of hot oil, the flavor was a bit off, they tasted a few days old, they were very chewy, instead of "cake-like" and the icing on most of the donuts was sticky and melting similar to leaving a donut out on your counter in the summer; the icing was just dripping off the donuts. I ordered 2 breakfast croissants for my husband and I, not a fan. He said the egg was green and the croissant was hard. I thought mine was ok but first bite had a little bit of plastic taste? That was weird, but we had to throw them out. But the donuts!? Delicious!!! I got a maple crueler and hubby got a raspberry filled. They also threw in some donut holes in the bag, mmm, that was nice. One tastes like a slice of cake, the custard one was filled generously with the custard. They were fresh and light. My 35 year old daughter still wants the one with sprinkles. There's a nice variety. I needed to drop a family member off at Mercy General at 5AM and was delighted to see an "on" sign at this family donut shop as I came down on J. This is a no frills place and yet it still has a lot of charm--warm and welcoming, even with a small dining area to enjoy a cup of coffee with your donut. At 5AM they were still getting the donuts out so they were as fresh as they could possibly be, and when I wanted something that was not quite ready for the case the kind lady at the front went back to get it for me. These are the most pillowy, soft, airy donuts! Not greasy or too sweet. Literally perfect! This is one of the quirkiest donut shops around for so many reasons, and it just makes me love it more with each visit. Stanely's (spelled "Stanely's" on one sign out front but "Stanley's" on another) is a unique East Sacramento institution, not to mention they make a damn fine donut. Walk in and you'll usually find a lone customer sitting at the lone table reading a newspaper, maybe some other colorful neighborhood characters and a counter that could be a great communal space but is entirely occupied by massive stacks of branded t-shirts. Watch out for homeless outside and keep in mind there is no place to sit and eat donuts considering the only chair is taken by that one squatting customer. My son and I occasionally stop in for donuts before his school starts. The donuts are usually always fresh and they always throw in some extras for him.
