As soon as I learned about New World Bakery Fortune Cookies I knew I had to try them. This is definitely a hole in the wall gem. The store is pretty tiny but you're able to pick up bags of fortune cookies for $3 and mess up cookies for $2 as well as giant cookies for $6. It's clear consumers like me are a tiny part of their business, but they were super friendly and I picked up ten bags of cookies. All the best fortune cookies served with your checks from the local Chinese restaurants come from New World Bakery. Fortune cookie is the only thing they make and sell here at this tiny store. Specializing in Fortune cookies for many years since I was a kid, this is my only go-to place for it. Other brands I have seen has an orange-ish color with an off vanilla flavor, but this one here is the real deal. They offer super affordable options: broken cookies are $2 per bag, normal ones at $3, and individually wrapped ones for $2.50. No frills here, just high quality product for a low price. There is usually just one guy working the back and the front of this store, so be ready with your cash, he is a busy man. read more

This was my first time visiting this little hidden fortune gem and been waiting ever since COVID hit us. My bro had given us a bag of reject cookies a couple of years ago but I've never been able to catch a good time to come and when we did, they were already closed. This place is a true hole in the wall factory and I'm sure many have walked by never knowing this boarded up fortune cookie factory is there. A one pound bag of cookies is just $3 but the real deal is the one pound bag of rejects for only $2!!! Next I'll have to see if the San Francisco Chinatown fortune cookie is still open to the public. With the exhilarating year of 2020 nearing a close, I had hope for the future and a strange craving for fortune cookies. I'm glad I decided to try this rather hidden local bakery while driving by the historic district. After parking and taking a little walk through some of R street, I headed over to the corner of Quill Alley and 10th. The location is also a short walk from Roosevelt Park then. Staff inside was friendly yet seemed a bit busy arranging packages when I came in. There was just a small column shelf and some boxes with fortune and flat cookies to purchase at great prices. Pay by cash only. I can imagine the bakery mainly brings products to restaurants and grocery stores. The fortune cookies are fresh and pretty good with a nice crunch and flavor for this type of cookie. I appreciate the overall natural taste, despite the listed imitation vanilla ingredient. Flat cookies look great too and would be easy to snack on. While not all of the fortunes are actually fortunes, the words seem to mean well. Positively matching with my outlook towards the new year and forward, the first cookie I opened read, "Don't give up, the beginning is always the hardest." read more

At the direction of a friend, I went here to pick up several packs of fortune cookies for them. But I got a few for myself, too, and I was really happy I did. These super-fresh fortune cookies surpassed anything I had ever had before, even the Panda Express ones, which I used to think were pretty good. I am sure you'll be glad to know that these fortune cookies buck the trend of offering pithy, deep advice and instead contain actual fortunes. None of those deep thoughts that other fortune cookies tend to contain nowadays like, "Most of the sky is beneath your feet," or, "If a fly can't fly, is it called a walk?" No, these are *actual fortunes* in the traditional sense. (Based on the, like, twenty cookies I've eaten so far, anyways.) New World Bakery is such a random little gem in Sacramento. I've been eating fortune cookies from here for years! My mom used to get them and bring them home for me and my sister and we loved them. When I'm just getting some fortune cookies to nom on as a snack or to bring back for my boyfriend, we tend to get the "mess-up" or irregularly shaped cookies because they still taste great and we don't really care about what they look like. For Chinese New Year parties or little get-togethers, I'll "slurge" (lol $2.50 for a bag is still an amazing deal) to get the regular fortune cookies. They even have GIANT fortune cookies that you can buy as a centerpiece or display item for an event. Disclaimer though: they're really thick and not kind to your teeth; still edible and delicious, but super sturdy and probably best to use it just for show. It's definitely a no-frills kind of place, and they only sell fortune cookies here, but that's all I what and it's what I get. Great prices for great cookies! read more

Wow here's another place I didn't know existed!! I was so happy to find this on Yelp and decided even though fortune cookies aren't really Chinese I wanted to get some for Chinese New Year. I was lucky to get a parking spot right out front and walked in and the machines were cranking out fortune cookies and smelled fabulous!!! They had a rack to the left with cookie rounds, bags of fortune cookies as well as the big fortune cookie on a tray. The man was very nice and bagged up my choices and we wished each other Happy New Year. If you want to see how these cookies are made you can do it right here in town without driving to SF. The cookies are so fresh and crispy I had to crack open the bag and get one right away. I cannot believe this gem has eluded me for so long! read more

These cookies are very delicious. Not too sweet, just the right amount of crunchy. Highly recommend. I came here on CNY, but they had closed early (before 12 am or not open at all?). So I decided to make my own fortune cookies! Doesn't take much ingredients, but omg it takes forever to make a dozen. Since folding them must be done quickly, you cannot bake more than 2-3 at a time. And then times have to be quick about folding them. They came out alright but I burnt over half my fingers during the process. :( I came back the next day and bought some from New World bakery. The bags they sell here are 2.50 for a lb of perfect fortune cookies and 1.50 for the bag of rejects. 1000000% worth it compared to failing at making homemade fortune cookies. And they also sell a MASSIVE fortune cookie for 6-7 bucks. It fits into a cake box. Would seem like a cute treat to reward your kids when they did something good. read more

Love there cookies. They are fresh and a great price. The store was next door to a noodle shop. Now there is a record store next door. This place is located half a block from the park and is walking distance from most state buildings. The hours are short, but they are posted so you won't miss out. You have two choices of cookies, perfect ones with fortunes and the flat ones that didn't make the bend. Both taste equally as good. The real difference is the price. They also sell some giant cookies. I've never had one, but they look just like the normal size and are all wrapped up for gift giving. read more

I jammed downtown to make it here before they closed at 2pm. I found tight parking right in front, so I made it happen. The door was wide open at 1:50pm, so we walked in and were happily greeted by a couple of staff. I quickly scanned the shelves and got exactly what I came in for: the giant fortune cookie, packaged in a clear plastic cake container, with 4 regular fortune cookies and some colorful ribbon ($8) and a bag of fortune cookies ($2). Paid cash and was out in 30 seconds. I brought it to a birthday party that I was told were serving Chinese food. They changed the menu last minute to Italian. LOL The fortune cookies were a hit anyways, especially the giant pseudo birthday cake fortune cookie! The cookies were fresh, crispy, and yummy tasting. Fortunes were all unique and some even inspiring! This is THE place for all of your fortune cookie needs! read more

I have been buying my fortune cookies here for many, many years. I used to work down the street from New World Bakery and being a student at the time, I was constantly moving my car so I wasn't ticketed (damn you downtown!) Anyway, it worked out because if I didn't move my car, I would have never smelled the cookies being baked every morning and I would have never stumbled upon this hidden gem. It's pretty neat when you walk in because one, you get to see how the cookies are made and two; you see that they also sell for real cheap! I always get the rejects (fortune cookies that didn't shape) because it's super inexpensive (I think $1.25/bag) and it's super yummy! The owners are always so nice and sweet. Had no idea this place existed. Thank goodness for Yelp! Just down a bit from the Fox & Goose, this little fortune cookie factory smelled heavenly. I bought a bag of the "T.V. Cookies" -- the reject fortune cookies -- for $1.25. I suppose they are called T.V. Cookies 'cause the idea is to just munch them mindlessly while watching the telly. However, they should also call them "driving cookies" as I munched away at them while driving through traffic. On another note, "T.V. Cookies" could also mean "totally vegan". There are no eggs in them or animal fat. But it probably doesn't mean that. Not as dark as the infamous fortune cookie factory in that alley in SF Chinatown, this place is clean, friendly and helpful. They have a mega fortune cookie for $6.00. Outrageous. I first tried this place 4 years ago and got their bag of "flop" fortune cookies. Flops taste just the same as a regular fortune cookie, but without the work! Mmmmmmm does it smell good in there. This is a mom and pop fortune cookie store and it's the best kept secret! I agree with another review that when it is a hot day, they close early since the machines in there make the factory extra hot. You wouldn't even know this place is there except for the yummy smell of FORTUNE COOKIES...who knew it could smell so good?!?! Anyway, I urge you all to try their personalized fortune cookies to hand out at your next event. They come in one big bag or pay a little extra per cookie to have them individually wrapped. They can print a customized message for you on the front and back and in basic colors. It's very awesome. I have used them twice for birthday parties and they are a hit! They'd be great for baby showers or wedding showers too. They also have a big $7.00 personalized fortune cookie you can order too. I have yet to get one. One of the guys who works there, Kenton, is super nice and friendly. He will go out of his way to make sure your order is right. Oh yes! Still five stars, even though my favorite bag of TV fortune cookie flops has gone up from $1 to $1.25 for 16oz bag. . . Damn recession . . . but, I'd pay even more for that cookie love! And they now have "CD" fortune-less cookies (but, I need all the luck I can get), that are perfectly disc shaped for about $2.25, and a display of a huge fortune cookie that you can probably special order with a personalized fortune. Funny thing - just looking through the bag I bought today, and the first fortune I found was "You will inherit an unexpected sum of money within the year" - Hah! There's nothing like having a local fortune cookie factory in town that makes great-tasting ~FRESH~ cookies. As you enter the unassuming screen door, the smell of warm, freshly-made fortune cookies greets your olfactory senses. The scent of vanilla permeates this tiny little place. Never again do you have to tolerate stale fortune cookies. I don't know what hours they're open, but if I visit during the weekdays in the morning or early afternoon, they're open. The exception to this might be when there's a heat wave and it's 104 degrees out. I've tried stopping by during a hot summer afternoon to find them closed. [Another convenience is that the factory is next door to the Mei Mei Noodle factory! The meatball pan is my favorite the meatballs just does really well with the bread. Not going to lie, but I used to work here when they first opened in 2009 and I would never get tired of eating the meatball pan or the green tea melon pan during my break. After all these years, I would have a craving from time to time so I always return and say hello to the owner. Besides, they make a lovely goodie box for a party and I always throw in a bag of dinner rolls because the quality of their bread is so soft and delicious. I'll be lucky if I still have 1/4 of the bag by the time I get home.

The cherry pastry was a stunner and delicious as well with great flavor and a nice balance of sweetness. My husband wanted the Estelle Noisette and although it was good, it was my least favorite of the three. It had pleasant nutty flavors but it was a little too rich for me. In the end, the real standout was the Blueberry Choux. The cream was light and fluffy and it had just the right amount of blueberry flavor. I really liked the texture of the pastry too and how it complimented the fluffy cream. I would definitely order that one again and highly recommend it. The pastries are definitely on the pricey side, but the quality and presentation justify the cost. The interior of the shop was nice and definitely reminded me of patisseries in France. There was plenty of seating available inside but I took my order to go. I'm really glad I finally got to give them a try and while not every item was a home run for me, the Blueberry Choux alone made the visit worthwhile. I will definitely be back to explore more of their offerings very soon.

Once you're inside, peruse the bakery case, order, pay, and be on your way! They have some picnic tables outside, or you can take it to go. We chose to take ours to go. My best friend got a few pastries, and I enjoyed the Cardamom Bun and the Salty Sesame Croissant. The bun was super cardamom-forward, which I enjoyed, and I loved the savory nuttiness. Both pastries were flaky, buttery, and so soft. I enjoyed sampling my best friends pastries as well! I'm not too familiar with the bakery scene in Sac, but I do enjoy Moonbelly Bakery and would love to come back. The bakery is off Folsom Blvd. with free parking in their lot out front! Go early for all their offerings and indulge!

The waiters waitresses and bust people are on it. Dishes don't pile up on tables. Even though the parking lot is packed and you go in there and the restaurant may be packed You're still going to find a table. I like sitting out on the patio because it's not as noisy as being inside. Now my girlfriend and I have been regular customers of elite bakery on Fair oaks boulevard and that place is also five stars. But Ettore's edges them out because of a larger menu, daily specials and a larger selection of pastries. Plus it's a little cheaper. This is a bad place to go if you're on a diet. But other than that go there and get your grub on. I'm there all the time. You'll probably see me there. This place gets the coveted four pigs.

Some came home with me, and it reheated very well. It also came with Chinese donuts to put in the porridge. Chinese donuts are a little bit different. They definitely taste like a doughnut, except they are not sweet at all. They are savory donuts, and are perfect to use as a crouton, so to speak. The green tea was very good, and they didn't overdo it with the lemon, and that hotdog roll that I had later, the pastry was delicious with just a little bit of a "chew" to it, they were definitely high-quality hot dogs, and it wasn't just green onion.
