Stopped in after a quick Yelp search for "breakfast" knowing nothing at all about this fantastic little shop, other than 1) it served breakfast nearby, and 2) I was hungry. I was subsequently blown away by 5-star service and an exquisite individually brewed cup of Counter Culture coffee. I was paying more attention to my desire for food as I carefully selected my breakfast sandwich fillings and then thoughtlessly asked for a cup of coffee, black. I actually think I asked Mike if they HAD coffee. Uh oh. I'm an Oompa Loompa in this coffee shop. I feel as though I have stumbled into a Starbucks where everyone has fabulously ordered their double Lutz, triple Lindy, shaken-not-stirred, super duper extra tall grande venti soy oh boys ahead of me while I was ordering a regular black coffee. I began to ponder the folly of my question, "Do you have coffee?" (apparently disregarding the 2-foot high letters: COFFEE SHOP, clearly displayed on the front of the building as my tummy demanded full attention like a spoiled toddler). Mike gave me a forgiving smile and asked how I liked my coffee at home. I thought, well I said black, of course, but then I imagined my mixed collection of fairly traded, medium-roast coffee beans chilling in the fridge, waiting for the chance to unleash their flavorful aroma after a spin in the grinder and then gentle shaking, falling, falling softly into a fresh filter bed before a steaming hot water bath transforms them into the richly flavored black-brown deliciousness in my coffee cup. I don't have a special coffee drink. Gasp. There I said it. I enjoy a tasty cup of coffee but there are so many different varieties out there that I could never taste them all, even in several lifetimes. I'm a one man woman but a shameless coffee gigolette. Unexpectedly overwhelmed by the coffee possibilities before me, Mike selected and individually brewed a cup of Counter Culture Colombian medium roast by slowly and carefully pouring the hot water over the ground beans while I admired the interesting collection of various coins from all over the world located on (and fully covering) the top of the register. He explained why individual cup brewing was superior and then he even satisfied my curiosity about why there was a random coin collection on the register. Mike did his best to ensure that I would not leave his coffee shop as much an ignoramus as when I entered. He was not only extremely knowledgable about all things coffee, but he also brought me a delightful and beautiful Latte treat to our table for me to sample. Wow. I am now super impressed and I feel special. Mike seems so genuinely helpful that I can't help but think that he must make everyone who comes into his shop feel this way. It doesn't matter that I've tried lattes before, I don't drink milk and I really want my coffee, well, black. No sugar, no cream, especially no whipped cream because then I may as well have it for dessert. I will say though, that this special treat was quite tasty and if I did not have such an aversion to drinking milk I might enjoy another cup someday. Regardless, it was still a tasty, unexpected treat and I was grateful for Mike's thoughtfulness and generosity. Very friendly staff and a very good cappuccino! I also bought almond cookies and they were good too! I spent some time here waiting for my car to get fixed and the atmosphere was nice! You will not find a better cup of coffee in Raleigh. Mike and staff carry the best beans available and are excellent in brewing. New World is the coffee lover's cafe. Their cortado is perfect and they make the best pour over in the area. I'm very particular about the coffee I drink and Mike is my "go to" for recommendations. Cute coffee shop! I work from home so I've been trying to find public places to work from here and there. So I decided to check out this place. It's located in a strip mall off Glenwood Ave. and while there was construction happening in the lot that day, there was still available parking. I was greeted warmly by the two staff members and offered a beverage suggestion based on the preferences I mentioned. I even got a couple almond cookies that were on display. I found seating near the door and minutes later my order was brought to me. The latte was yummy although I might not get the cookies again. While it's not a huge place, it's not exceptionally large either...just enough. There are a couple cozy seats by the front window, 2 person tables in the front and a few tables for large parties, that can also be rearranged, in the rear. If I could rate lower I would. Absolutely the worst breakfast. I did not eat either meal I ordered. I got a sausage and egg sandwich on a croissant, I asked for cheese and there was none, which wasn't a big deal. Immediately after opening the box it smelt like a rotten egg, it was clearly a microwaved egg and sausage patty. The egg was dry and looked absolutely disgusting on top of the hideous smell. The patty was discolored and didn't even look like meat. After seeing the sandwich I was scared to even open the plain bagel and cream cheese I ordered. Looked fine but wasn't toasted ( like requested) and already had cream cheese on it so I couldn't even go home and toast it myself. Such a waste of money and food, would never recommend to anyone. My partner and I were craving sandwiches and coffee, and this really hit the spot! It's a little pricy for sandwiches, but it's a local spot so we were more than happy to pay the few extra dollars. He got a breakfast sandwich and iced latte. Both were great. I got the BLT lunch sandwich with avocado and chipotle mayo on sourdough. Sooooooo good. The avocado was perfect and added extra flavor and creamy texture. The chipotle mayo was good and there wasn't too much of it. Sandwich came moderately toasted, it was warm, crunchy, and flavorful. My main criticism was the side of pasta salad. I couldn't eat it. It wasn't traditional pasta salad and should be renamed as a side option when ordering. It's more of a "chipotle pasta salad." It is pasta noodles, black beans, and corn smothered in chipotle mayo. I like chipotle mayo, but definitely not that much. I couldn't eat it. Luckily, I was pretty full from the sandwich. A great cafe to get some work done! Plenty of seating throughout, and just enough noise to prevent you from dozing off in front of your laptop. And the coffee? Amazing! I've tried the hot lattes, cold lattes, brewed coffee, cold brew, americano,... The owner definitely knows his coffee, and he does it right. Delicious latte and excellent customer service. I ordered an original latte with whole milk and it was so so tasty. The owner/barista was so helpful and friendly. He brought both our drinks to us, no need to even get up! We also ordered a dark sunreyes. It's an iced glass of orange juice with a shot of espresso. It sounds really strange.. but it actually ended up being pretty good. Though the latte is still my favorite. I love that it's served at drinking temperature so you don't end up burning your tongue! Inside there's tons of seating. There are several booths that can fit 4, small tables for 2, a couch, and a large community table. The music is audible but not too loud. Somehow I had never heard of this spot but was feeling completely OVER starbucks nearby so typed in "coffee" on google maps and that was that! The shop is tucked away in a nondescript shopping center, and it was very quiet when I arrived at around 2 pm on a Tuesday with a few folks working/studying. They brew counter culture coffee which doesn't even compare to 'bucks at all. They also have OAT MILK! A nice change of scenery for the day and major points for a coffee shop with some real food. Let me start by saying I work in coffee shops a lot. Sometimes I just want to stay there all day like it's my home which means I'm going to get really hungry around lunch time and need something more then a muffin to munch on. I was running around town the other day over by pleasant valley shopping center and I was actually planning to check out this Thai restaurant I've been wanting to get to but it was passed 2:30 and they were closed. I had just driven past NWCH and decided to turn around and check this place out (they were advertising a BLT special on their blackboard) in other words I new they had real food. I stepped inside to a large space full of tables, booths, and a comfy couch. The barista was very friendly and I asked if they were still serving food. He said they serve food all hours that they are open - awesome more good news for me. I decided to order a veggie wrap on wheat with a cup of their homemade butternut squash soup. Everything was really fresh and tasty, overall it hit the spot for me. I also tried an iced latte nothing super special but it was a decent latte. I think I overheard him tell another customer that they do drip iced coffee so next time I'll be sure to try it. Something else that makes this place stand out is that they deliver your coffee to you. Walk in order at the counter and take a seat. They will serve your coffee, food and anything else you ordered right to you. It's a nice perk these days. I easily found a space to spread out for awhile and get some work done. There are many stories told by many people about 'love at first sight.' I will now tell you my story of 'love at first sip' with New World Coffee House. A long long time ago (this afternoon, probably about 6 hours ago,) there was a prince on white horse (just an Asian guy in his blue Honda,) when out into his kingdom, searching for his true love (a really nice cup of coffee.) Okay... so I'm no prince, but I did fall in love with this place after just one visit. When I stepped in, I had pegged it for just another run-of-the-mill cafe with free Wi-Fi; why would I say that? Literally everyone inside has a MacBook, and that was no exaggeration. EVERYONE. Walked up to the counter and scanned the menu, I see a clean-kept gentleman doing a manual pour of some really amazing smelling bean (we'll get to it later.) I wasn't sure why, but my eye was fixed on cafe au lait, so that's what I ordered. "Is that what you normally order?" The man asked. "Umm... kind of. Why?" "Because we have some pretty amazing latte," the man continued, and quickly explain the process with latte, with the cup size and shots of expresso and all that. "Amazing huh?" I thought to myself, "that's kind of presumptuous of him isn't it? let's give it a try then." He and I chatted for a few about coffee and about what he was pouring, before I got my large mug with double shots, came with the obligatory tulip latte art of course, then I found an empty seat and ready to take a sip of the "amazing latte," I amused myself. "WOW! THIS REALLY IS AMAZING" I think to myself, and mentally apologized for ridiculed the man, mentally. While I was indulging in latte, the nice gentleman now walked over to my table with a shot of the manual pour he was working on. It was Hacienda La Esmeralda, has nice aroma and clean roast taste, and it was his own brew, and he shared a shot with me. That was my story of 'love at first sip.' P.S. The atmosphere is decent, and seating space abounds. However, what prevents this establishment from having broader appeal like its competitors is the staff. They prevent you from ordering a drink the way you desire (say skim milk over whole). While I understand the logic, the problem is that it fails to consider health reasons and taste preferences of a customer. I ordered a cappuccino with skim, and all I got was a low quality drink with milk poured into it. Really unacceptable. If the owner truly cared about his product, staff would ensure that any product was quality and crafted with care. This attitude clearly demonstrates they don't understand coffee and it's meaning to people. The owner and his staff could use a good lesson in customer service! read more

I've been coming here to study for a few weeks, and can honestly say that this place is as good as it gets for that purpose (well, one minor complaint: see below...). The owner-operators take coffee and customer service seriously, and appear to have built a faithful customer base (plenty of regulars whom the owners know and address by name). Everything I've had (coffee, tea, and wraps) has been great. Also, the seating is comfortable, the wifi is reliable, and there are outlets more or less everywhere. A couple of things that particularly stand out for me are that the temperature is always well regulated (unlike, say, the nearby Caribou on Duraleigh, where it's always freezing during the winter months!) and that the background music is kept at a very innocuous volume. All in all, NWCH is probably my favorite coffee shop in Raleigh at the moment (and I think I'll go there now). (As for my minor complaint: Because it's such a comfortable place, NWCH seems to be frequented during the day by a number of people who work remotely and choose to make the cafe their office. Not a problem in itself, and I would probably do the same myself if I were able, but the one thing I wouldn't do is talk on my cell phone as though this were my private office. This is a pet peeve of mine, and it happens here an awful lot. For that reason I kind of wish the proprietors would institute a take-it-outside rule about cell phone usage.) read more

My girlfriend and I just finished climbing over at TRC and she happened to come across this place! We were eager to try the coffee and the food after checking the place out online! As we entered the place the cashier was complaining about the owner not being able to keep staff and how stupid he was to try and open another establishment. The guest in front if us was extremely irratated and left saying " Tell everyone how you really feel ". As we approached the counter, not ever being here, we were approached by a very smart alloc demeanor. My girlfriend was asking questions about the coffee and food because she has sensitivities. She was completely mocked by the two girls behind the counter. It pissed me off enough that I called them out on there crappy behavior and let them know how rude they were. With this being said and after all the complaining, they forgot to ring in my girlfriends order in which she ordered first. So after there messed up, the kitchen gal, (who was really nice), rerang up our food. I let her know how upset we were about everything. She apologized and still charged for their mess up. ( Which wasn't a big deal). I really expected a lot more from this place based on some of the reviews. Now on a positive note, the Counter Culture coffee is amazing and the food was superb. I had the Jubanto pour over coffee, which was delightful. I also ate the Turkey, avocado, swiss sandwich with the Asian slaw. It was so good! My girlfriend, fashionably late, got the BLT with the southwest pasta salad. It too, was soooooo good! We probably won't ever be back due to the crass nature of the staff. Dropped in here to read a book. The place is nestled between 2 food joints. They have plenty of options when it comes to their mocha flavors. The staff were friendly and explained what each one were. What I found amusing was that they were not amused by the necessity to have different flavors :p I ordered the cold Katan Mocha(might have misspelt) and some almond cookies to go. I found the Mocha to be creamiest that I have ever had. However, my wife was quick to add that they have added a lot of cream to the Mocha which is very unlikely. But tasted good ! The almond cookies is a disappointment. They have generously used butter which can be sensed in every bit. Totally, killed the almond flavor. I'm in here 3-4 times a week. The new owners, Mike & Helena have finally given a shop to NW Raleigh that can be taken seriously. From traditional Macchiatos & Lattes, and pour-over brews, to French Press... each cup is prepared with care BY A REAL LIVE HUMAN BARISTAS - as if you are the only customer in the place. If you like machines to make your coffee and employees who "dump" poorly machine-steamed milk into your cup just to get you out the door, go across the street to the place with the siren on the sign. If you are in on a Friday morning, don't expect to see Mike. Most likely he'll be over at Counter Culture's Roasting facility for a cupping, scavenging a new varietal or blend to bring back for New World customers to try. Saturdays and Sundays, New World also serves up Pancakes and French Toast, respectively. The Wi-Fi is solid and free. Seems like they are still tweaking the food menu, and I've only tried a Black Bean wrap - which was good - but there is always something interesting on the menu if you are having hunger pangs. Good for kids and adults alike - New World now sits atop the small heap of Raleigh's Independently-owned best spots for a cup. Only 12 minutes from downtown, and 3 minutes from Crabtree - skip the corporate green guys and give it a shot. It's a whole New World. read more

The coffee is overpriced, and frankly, the service isn't with a smile. We walked in, and my brother, who likes dark roast, mentioned he wanted a dark roast to the owner. He also told the owner that he used to work at a Starbucks. The owner made a face and told him that they don't serve dark roast, and proceeded to run down my brother's coffee preference. Right off of Glenwood/70, it's easy to get to, tucked into a shopping center with a big "Coffee House" sign. You won't have an issue with parking here, even during busy times of the day. No drive-through, which is a plus because the coffee made here is meant to be enjoyed. Lots of seating on the inside with a large table that can seat up to twelve(?) and can also be reserved. If you have never had pour over coffee, have it when your here, drink it black. I also highly recommend the traditional size lattes cappuccinos. I really like the non-chain look and feel of this coffee house. I found it while out running errands over the weekend. It was hot this day and I was tooling around town with the convertible top down. I stopped in New World for some cold refreshment while I sat for a while working on MBA homework. There's outdoor seating and free WiFi. The interior decor is nothing fancy, but it really adds to the charm somehow. The inside isn't very big but I managed to snag an open chair by the front window. They have coffee, espresso-based drinks and frozen goodies. I got the frozen PB (peanut butter) mocha, which was very good. New World isn't quite as close to me as It's A Grind, but I'll definitely be back! read more

I love coffee shops, but I might as well just get it out there that I don't like coffee. I really adore this coffee shop so much that I want to like coffee to fit in more. I don't have to do that though because they have quite an extensive menu. Smoothies almost couldn't get any better than at New World. They offer raspberry, banana, strawberry, mango, or mixed fruit in orange or pineapple juices. Most of the time I get mixed fruit, but every now and then I'll change it up. They're offered in two sizes and run about $4 apiece. For coffee drinkers, there's quite an array to choose from. Breakfast sandwiches are served all day everyday. My fave is to get sausage, egg, and cheese on a croissant. A little greasy, but very flaky, fluffy, and yummy! I've had their Apple Walnut salad a couple times as well. It's served with shrimp, walnuts, apples, cheese crumbles, and a poppy seed dressing. Most recently I tried a sandwich which had mozzarella cheese and prosciutto on it. It was pretty good, but not as good as that salad. They have quite a few different pastries to choose from, but despite being tempted I haven't tried any yet. Maybe next time. New World is cozy and located in the Townridge Shopping Center near the Wal-mart on Glenwood Avenue. It's privately owned by a couple. You'll see Mike there just about everyday. There are several small tables in the front, a couple booths midway down, then a couple small tables, a couch, and a large table which seats up to twelve and can be reserved for groups. I've reserved it for my book club once and we really enjoyed it, but if you're going to do a group and eat make sure to allot plenty of time for your food to come out because they seem to make each dish one by one. The WiFi and various seating arrangements make it a great place to sit and chat, read, or do some work. Their website really needs to be updated and they don't keep up with the discounts which they've offered on meetup (ie. sponsorship discounts have been offered, but they expire and still remain as current on the site) so that is frustrating. Other than that, I really enjoy this little spot and they cater really well to noncoffee drinkers. read more

The casual atmosphere of this place definitely got me! First off, the workers here are super friendly. I took awhile figuring out what I wanted to get, but they were patient with me the entire time. On a side note, I wasn't too crazy about the fact that their menu is written on a large chalkboard right by the cash register- I almost felt pressured to pick something right away. Anyhow, I got a frozen mocha along with a few of their mini almond cookies. Their frozen drink wasn't like a frappuccino you'd get at Starbucks- definitely much creamier! Also, the milk and the ice never separated as I took my time sipping on my drink so it had the same consistent taste and texture from start to finish! The almond cookies on the other hand were pretty bland in my opinion. I think the best part about them was the powdered sugar that was dusted on top of them. They weren't horrible or anything, but definitely not something I'm going to crave any time soon. Overall, the ambiance was probably what made me happiest about this place. I can't get enough of this place. New World is hands down my favorite coffee joint in the triangle, and I've been to my fair share (considering checking out coffee shops is one of my hobbies). If it wasn't for the distance I would probably go here every day. However, I have to limit my trips to when I want to indulge in one of their amazing traditional lattes or when I run low on beans for home. What I love most is that the people here really know and care about their coffee. They literally don't sugar coat it (which I also love), so if you're looking for some toothachingly sweet Starbucks concoctions, look elsewhere. Actually, even if you're a Starbucks junkie or are used to your usual place, I still say give New World a fair shot. I've never had a better plain old latte than I have here; it really doesn't need anything else. With all these new coffee places opening up and trying to stay modern and relevant, I can appreciate that there are no gimmicks here. Just good old-fashioned coffee and espresso prepared with expertise. I've never had the food, but the menu is simple and intriguing (homemade chipotle mayo sounds so delicious). Once in a while I'll have a plain or almond croissant. The almond croissant has a beautiful presentation, drizzled with flaked almonds, copious amounts of honey, and powdered sugar. Great place to go and get some work done. I got there right around 8am and had no trouble finding a place to sit. There's a large 'community table' in the back as well. I ordered a flavored iced Americano which hit the spot. I also did a build-your-own sandwich with sausage, egg and cheese which was pretty huge and definitely filling and delicious. New World Coffee is a hidden gem in a shopping center off Pleasant Valley. They serve excellent and always fresh CounterCulture coffee, and their baristas (especially Matti) are decently skilled and knowledgeable. They have a limited but tasty menu of pastry and fresh made sandwiches as well. I love and highly recommend the current sig bev, the iced plum shakerato, with Finca El Puente "Purple Princess" single origin espresso and muddled pluot that perfectly echoes the ripe plum and cherry notes of the coffee. read more

What an incredible hole in the wall coffee shop. I always drive by it and finally went inside to see what it was all about. They have a multitude of coffee, tea and smoothie options, as well as food. They have quaint little seating indoors and the customer service was super nice. It was a great place to meet up with a friend and try something light, yet filling. I came here for breakfast this morning and loved it. We had the iced mocha, vanilla iced latte (both great), and breakfast sandwiches. The sandwich was amazing! I like that you get to build your own, and there are plenty of options! We had egg whites, avocado, turkey sausage, cheese, and chipotle mayo on a croissant. SO GOOD! The service was great as well! Four stars because it's definitely a BIT pricy, $25 for two drinks & sandwiches. Still loved it though, so will definitely be back. read more

The owner of this coffee shop is very knowledgeable about coffee and is meticulous about getting the details of coffee brewing right. The coffee here is much better than that in the other local coffee shops that I have tried. read more
