BBQ and roast pork and roast duck
    Stella H.

I ended up coming here In search of BBQ pork since the shop inside Great Wall supermarket is undergoing renovations. The grocery store has all the typical Asian vegetables and condiments. But the restaurant area was amazing! We only grab the pork this time but definitely will come back to try all the other dishes since they smell amazing! Service is quick so you definitely can come in and out relatively quickly.

This is a review for the new Hong Kong Style BBQ stall in the food court of NY Mart. They opened recently and I've gotten food from them 3 days in a row. It's that good. Much better than what they've got at Great Wall and 99 Ranch. They roast half a pig each day of the weekday. They roast a whole pig each day of the weekend. They do sell out fast so if you go after the "lunch hour" you may miss it. I've had the ginger/scallion chicken, roast pig, roast pork, roast duck, soy braised pig knuckles and soy braised duck wings. All of it has been very good. Flavorful. Not overly salty. The owners that run this stall have a history of running a restaurant known for their barbecue meats as well as Dim Sum. I'm hoping they'll introduce some of their Dim Sum to this food stall at NY Mart!

*****2.5 stars***** Out of the Asian markets in the area, New York Mart has to be my least favorite. Prices are on the higher side, produce isn't always fresh or is lacking, and they have no shopping baskets. Why do I come here then? It's convenient (closest Asisn market to my house), the cleanest, and never crowded. The meat and seafood section aren't bad either. The food court options are okay. They have some new ones that recently opened that I wouldn't mind trying (such as Best Noodle House) and the steamed pork buns at one stall is pretty good and cheap. Not a fan of the stall at the end that sells fast food Chinese. Their counter top displays are usually empty or almost empty. What I have tried was bland. The pecking duck also had way to many bones in it. Staff is okay. I've interacted little with them (mainly during check out) and they just go through the motions of being there. Parking is usually always quick as their are plenty of spaces in the plaza.

Marufuji does carry a lot of Japanese imported items you cannot find at other stores in the area, and I think it's a great addition to Tysons. All of the employees are so friendly too, I love stopping by just to browse the new stuff they get in every once in awhile. It absolutely is pricey, since it's a very small specialty grocery store. The produce they carry is fresh, but the markup is quite high. You're likely not going to come here for your regular weekday grocery haul. When I shop here I always make sure I'm shopping deals/sales, otherwise I come here for the meat. They have the best quality A5 wagyu and kurobuta pork. Again it's pricey, but even full price it's worth it for the insane marbling. I did manage to catch their wagyu on a sale where it was $80/lb which was a pretty cool find. I'm also personally a sucker for the gachapon machines at the front of the store (which rotate semi-regularly).

The store is pretty good quality, otherwise I wouldn't be going a few hours out of my way to shop here. Things are tidy, neat, organized and lots of great selection for such simple things as soy-sauce, especially if you are a connoisseur, which one becomes if you are Asian and into cooking. Being a vegetarian, there are lots of choices in fresh veggies and fruits, and great Asian choices. There are also aisles for tea, noodles, and cookware. My problem is that their checkout system is not sufficient. I cannot help noticing that in DC Metro all these Asian stores hire a high proportion of Latinos. They work at the counter and in the back and number more than the Asian workers. Having come from an Asian small grocery, everyone my parents hired were Asian. They offered pay to Asian college students. They know that Asian-Americans would like to work, and can do at least as good a job in sorting, processing, cashiering. My mom was a very good cashier when she helped out. They can stand the work for long hours just like in China. But here, they are NOT giving enough of those kinds of opportunities to Asian-Americans, even all the college students in UM or MCC who would also love a PT job. Specifically, I became angry because a Latino couple stood behind me and was bum-rushing me at the counter. They tried to cut in front of me, but I pointed out my place in the line. I had just as small a basket of items as they did, so they should have been willing to yield, but they were not. When it came to putting things in my shopping bag to take out, the Latina cashier barely helped me. Then I had to pay, but the Latino couple was trying to crowd me out, since i like to stand right in front of the register to receive my change, which I have a right to. Instead they objected to my wanting to stand at the counter table. Then when I was rather slow putting things away, they sort of made a jeering comment about it. This really caused me to blow my top. How many times do I come to a Latino grocery store and am very patient and pleasant? How many times do I put up when the fellow shoppers refer to me as "China" and the cashier is a tiny bit edgy? They never hire Asian Americans to work at any Latino grocery stores that I know about! Never! I never see them cooking in the back, doing packing work, or cashiering! As for Indian grocery stores, it is also totally out of the question! They also proudly hire all of their own to pack, sort, cook, bake, their Indian cuisine! Asian-American businesses cannot even have the dignity of hiring all Asian workers many of who would love to work. Instead, they have to cater to corporate America and hire just so many Latino and black workers for their stores, and whether this is due to DEI is perplexing. Again, I never see that Latino/Black grocery stores are hiring any Asian American workers. That simply is not required so it does not happen! So these corporate pressures push Asian Americans who are more average students and from the lower-income towards crime and towards the underworld. They even have to work at nail-salons where they have to slavishly cater to the whims of women pretending to be mistresses and subject to all manners of abuse. From there they can fall victims of cancer, and rape, and much worse as they cater to the whims of disgusting creatures hoping for their moral downfall. This would be less if Asian Americans stood up for themselves by having all-Asian businesses like they do on the West coast, and where the authorities still respect and honor family businesses and allow them to hire as many of their own kind as they wish, because I absolutely refuse to believe that Asian Americans young or old would NOT want to work at these Asian supermarkets if they were given a chance! Just look at all those Asian housewives shopping here! They are so quick and grabby and focused that they just swim through the cashier line and never mind anything. They certainly would not mind some jeering by a few mouthy other minorities! Failing this, then the other option for older disabled Asian-Americans being bum-rushed and treated to Spanish conversation at this store at the check-out counter, is to PLEASE CONSIDER PUTTING IN SELF-CHECKOUT COUNTERS. I pointed this out to a manager, but he said all he can do is report any problems with checkout to the owner. CVS, Target, Walmart, and many other stores have gone Self-Checkout and it is to help accommodate shoppers since these self-checkout offer more space and a bit more time as well. There is nobody standing right behind you crowding in on you and talking up to the cashier. They can go to almost any other store in this region anyway and find a few Latino grocery stores to shop and play bum-rush at the checkout.

I saw a lot of things from Georgia and Ukraine, but I think I saw other products from that region (Russian, Lithuanian, Macedonian, etc.). The staff were very friendly, and cheerfully assisted me with some of the pastries we purchased. One had a nice balance of flaky pastry and fruit filling while the blintzes seemed a bit underwhelming. I also picked up a bottle of dessert wine and Children #1 and #2 picked out some candies that caught their eye. The inside is clean and somewhat small but easy to navigate. There is music playing (I don't know what language; I want to say Russian but in today's climate that could be a charged statement. Just want to say it positively adds to the vibe). I have no idea what had happened, but she didn't mind reading this woman the riot act. Then after she finished her first tirade, she started on everyone else. Listen lady, I'm here to pick up some celery and odds and ends, I wasn't even in this store. She kept this up the whole time she was in the store, whoever irked her, great job. I then made my way up and down the aisles. Each aisle was a different ethnicity. And each aisle was packed full with items that you would have to search far and wide for. I walked out of her with way too many snacks that are hard to find and do not regret it one bit. Yes, the customer service here could be worked on. But if they have to deal with customers like I described, I can see why they adjust their attitudes.
