Newk's is still A-OK with me. If you are looking for something quick, this is a really good option. Kinda like a panera, soups, salads, and sandwiches reign, but they also have some pizzas and baked goods too. Love the bread and butter pickles at the condiments bar. This past visit, I went with crab bisque and half a roast beef sandwich. Bisque was ok (I put a lot of added cheese and croutons in there) and the roast beef sandwich is pretty tasty. Love that it's toasted, and they'll let you know what's on it, (provolone, spicy mustard, lettuce, tomato) so if you don't like those things, you can always have them take it off. Place is clean, we sat outside on the nice covered patio, and had a nice quick meal before headed off to the airport. read more

We stopped at Newk's for lunch on our way to the airport. My daughter ordered the crawfish pizza, my wife ordered the loaded potato soup and half a steak sandwich and I order the Hopping John Soup and half a po boy sandwich. I have to say the Hopping John soup was amazing and I could have eaten more than a cup. By way that was a cup, their bowls are huge. The shrimp po boy, I was not impressed with. I am use to have fried shrimp on a po boy and the 4 shrimp on my sandwich were steamed, not good. The bread however, was soft and had a great crust. The thin crust crawfish pizza was very good and had a little kick to it. My wife enjoyed her meal and stated that the loaded bake potato soup was outstanding. Well let me start by saying i was a little put off by the name.. But when we walked in it was a bright welcoming store. They opened the door and asked if we'd ever been there. No one in our party had so she proceeded to walk us to the large menu on the wall. She explained the salads and sandwiches, sides and soups.. I opted for the soup and sandwich. I tried the chicken salad sandwich and it was awesome. Tasted very fresh. Had the pecans and cranberries in it. It was about 4 inches long. I wish it woulda been a little bigger. My soup was the crap and corn chowder. It was ok, alotta corn. The only reason i gave 4stars is because of the price. It seemed a little steep to me. Over $10 for my soup and half sandwich. I was literally looking at some of the workers with a "sshhhhh" finger over my lips . . . still full from lunch at dinner! Pathetic. My addition is that the more I go, the more I like the folks who make Newk's such a welcoming atmosphere. James . . . you deserve a sho nuff shout out! Uber friendly, uber helpful, and uber accommodating. He is a reflection (as are others) of leadership, uncompromising hiring practices, and/or great training. I'll also add that I finally ate something other than the pizza and a salad. i would like to announce that I ate a sandwich: the Royal to be exact . . . and it was absolutely DELISH!! A must try!! Finally some good food on the Northside. Newk's is a welcome sight to my traveling for food eyes. Usually if I wanted something good I went downtown or to riverside (my favorite section) or to the beach. I got to go into Newk's today and it is just like all the other Newk's that I have been into from Mississippi to the southside. I really like the open kitchen so there's no question if your food is fresh. I had the pepperoni n sausage pizza today and it was delishious. Cooked well not burnt, with plenty of toppings. Not too many but just the right amount. I'm a pie lover who has had some of the best in NYC. So next time I'm at Newk's it's the Italian sub for me and then we will see if they are as good as the ones that I have had before. Newk's Rocks read more

Very nice restaurant for lunch, brunch or early dinner. Being a new restaurant in the ever growing River City Marketplace complex of stores and restaurants, it is very busy, especially on the Friday night we tried it for the first time. The inside was very open and airy and welcoming. The outdoor patio was covered nicely with awnings with many tables. On to the food -- I had the Simple Salad and Soup; good salad, but could be served in a larger bowl to make eating it easier --- but it had mixed greens, grape tomatoes, slices of cucumbers, chopped onions, choice of dressings. The soup I tried was the Lobster Bisque, it was good, but not great. My mother ordered the Soup and Sandwich, her soup was better than mine, Broccoli Cheese, and her sandwich had lots of chicken salad and was too big to finish in one meal. The bowls of soup was nice size. In the center of the restaurant there is a help your self condiment table with crackers, seasonings, bread sticks (loved these with my soup!), cheese and extras for salads and sandwiches, such as pickles and croutons. One of my kids ordered the kids pizza --- it looked terrific, four slices of a great looking thin crust pizza. My older kid got a chicken sandwich and it was good, it took him all of 10 minutes to inhale it, so I have no idea how it tasted or looked :)! Drinks are $$, but larger than most fast food places, with good choices. The desserts looked good, but at $3.00 a slice I don't think I'll try one unless I go just for dessert & coffee. I will go back and maybe give this place another star. This place reminded me like Panera's minus the bagels and add pizzas; the pizzas only come in one size, 10". There is a completely open kitchen where you can watch everything being prepared while you eat, if you sit in the back, we opted for a window seat that was more openly feeling. You order at the counter, but the food is brought to your table and a "busboy" picked up the dirty dishes. This place uses real plates, bowls and silverware! The staff was very welcoming. read more

From the reviews, I had anticipated something different than what this ended up being. It's another version of Panera's. My broccoli cheddar soul was EXACTLY like theirs. The bowl was very large but the amount was the normal bowl amount. The serving vessel size was deceiving. On the other hand, if it were more filled, no one could eat it. I also got 5-cheese mac/cheese. Zero flavor. I mean, none. I did wait until it was a little cooler to try it but this should have allowed me to taste it better. I took 2 bites just to verify it indeed had no taste and stopped consuming immediately. Not wasting calories on this. Maybe the most important was this: if you have an open kitchen and only hard surfaces, noise gets amplified. One of the kitchen staff decided to sing her experiences and orders loudly. Off key singing loudly. My $12 wasn't going to include this. On wait, a manager type was just trying one of cakes for the first time and a staff member asked about it. Pouring rain and lights flickering seemed like a good idea to be inside a nice deli/sandwich shop. She got a small pizza that must have been good - I got 7 minutes of quiet- while I had the Royal samich. Great bread, meat a little light but tasty and coleslaw on the side that was average. Pleasantly surprised. Stopped here after landing at JAX and looking for a late lunch. We decided to get the pairings. Italian sandwich, brocolli and cheese soup, spicy shrimp pizza, ceasar salad, and sausage and pepperoni pizza. The soup is pretty good and chunky, shrimp pizza was great. Italian sandwich was ok, pepperoni pizza was good. The pairing size was bigger than panera. My pizza was medium sized but thin crust, so i was able to finish all by myself (either that or I just eat a lot) and the salad was a good size bowl (i couldnt finish it), soup was also good sized.. 2x the size of panera's pairing. I love going to Newks. I went there today and surprisingly my pizza was very salty. I normally get the 5 cheese pizza or the Margherita pizza and it's very good. Hopefully it was a fluke. I will try it again. Customer service is always good and they are timely with your food order. read more

The facility is clean, and a bit of an industrial look. We have been here twice and each time ordered a Debra Pizza. Very tasty and just about right for two people. While not very large they use quality ingredients and the crust is wonderful. The food here is fresh and tasty, and provides a healthy alternative to other restaurants, so I would give that attribute a five star rating. It's clean and the service is ok, but the overall environment is why I'm giving it 3 stars. It is very crowded and very loud each time I've visited (Sundays after church and for lunch during the weekdays). I don't mind a BUSY restaurant, however, every time I've come here, it's OVERWHELMINGLY crowded! We're seated literally back to back with other patrons at their table, sometimes elbow to elbow, squeezing up against people trying to eat, and we're bumping into folks as we and they are trying to get in and out of our / their seats. They do bring your food to you, but you have to get up from your table to get your own drink and refills, so that can be challenging in a tight space that's packed to the brim. It's pretty uncomfortable. Plus it's very noisy with an open kitchen, and you're hearing other people's conversations because you're so close and everyone is yelling over the noise to be heard. Bottom line: I would recommend picking up your order instead of dining in. read more

I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with Newk's. We eat out for every meal, which means our options can become a bit limited after 10 years of living in this area. We were quite happy to see all the new restaurant and used to go to Newk's all the time. The food was fresh and different than what we could get elsewhere. Then there was a stint with quality varying greatly between visits a couple years back. I actually talked to the manager about this and it seemed to improve. This most recent visit was nothing out of the ordinary. The menu is mostly always the same with a seasonal item or 2. I order the mac and cheese and some crab bisque (about $11). I have had an issue with the mac and cheese here and not coming out hot. This was the case on this visit as well. They run it through the oven which brown the top, but the center is luke warm at best. They place some shredded cheese on top after it comes out of the oven, which never even began to melt. My crab bisque was really just awful. It was watery and flavorless and tasted more like a weak tomato soup than crab bisque. My spouse ordered a sandwich which looked and was reported to taste great. This is a 3 star place. The food quality and selection is good, but do not expect great food. I will never order the mac and cheese again. It is good when hot, but what a frustration to have to worry about hot food at a restaurant. I also will never order any of the soups again. The bisque was a travesty. My advice, stick to salads, pizzas and sandwiches! read more

Great service and staff work here. I had never been here and a staff member was so helpful with giving me good options and popular items. Also, I ordered my food to go and it did not take long at all. The price is very cheap, which never hurts. I ordered a Caesar salad and mac n cheese combo. Great quik eats spot Stopped here while on vacation with wife, two children (3 and 6) and grandparents. We were staying at the Hampton Inn down the street and looking for somewhere for a quick bite. This little place with a cafeteria feel fit the bill perfectly. Kids had VERY reasonably priced cheese pizzas (which included drinks!) for just $4.25 each. Can't beat that. Myself, my wife and grandma shared a veggie, a mediterranean and a debra pizza. All three were great but the mediterranean was a slight favorite. Grandpa had the spicy shrimp pizza and enjoyed it all to himself. Afterwards we all shared a slice of chocolate cake and a slice of strawberry cake amongst ourselves. We were traveling on I-95 and found this place on Yelp for a lunch spot. The reviews were great and well deserved. The ordering process was a little confusing since you order when you walk in, rather than at the table. We decided to eat outside to maintain social distance and enjoy the fresh air after being in the car for several hours. They gave us a number to display on the table and our salads were delivered within minutes. The Black & Blue had a little too much dressing, but we'd order it again and just get the dressing on the side. The chicken salad was very good. The menu had a lot of options that sounded good. We're from out of town so had never heard of them. Checked out reviews and menu on Yelp. Was drawn to the 5 cheese mac and cheese. The young man who took our order was patient and friendly. I ordered a half steak sandwich with a half order of the mac and cheese. The sandwich was very good-- steak was tender and the bread was nice and crusty. Hubby ordered the Newk's Q which comes with a white bbq sauce. We both liked it. My teenage daughter was with us and tried bites of the sandwiches too. We all liked the sandwiches and would order them again. Unfortunately we weren't very impressed with the 5 cheese mac and cheese. I don't think I'd make a point to get it again. It was just ok. After ordering we went to sit and while getting my drink the waiter came up to me and said I was missing a side for my sandwich. I let him know no I just was not interested in a side. After he brought our food out I was again given another "lecture" on choosing a side. I finally said sure bring me fruit. My husband was disappointed that his chef salad had no meat.
