I love writing stellar reviews and advocating for mom and pop shops because I want the business to stick around. This place is fantastic, and it's the only one I know that sells the chicken cha I'm posting. It's such a treat but it's $19/lb...but we'll worth it. You can get the half chicken but we opted for the whole chicken for $117. This is a dish that I'm surprised isn't more popular - prob cause it's a specialty item that's harder to make. The cha here is a bit pricier - other places have the banana leaf wrapped cha for $7 but here, it's $10. But keep in mind you're paying for quality, not quantity. It drives me crazy cause my family's very particular about the food they consume, but when they give any place or dish their stamp of approval, it's a for sure solid bet. (: hope that's worth something. I think this place is well worth it and great if you're okay with splurging a bit more. As the other review posted, bashing a place merely cause it's outside of your price point isn't fair. I will admit I didn't try their banh chung but the $27-34 is pretty typical nowadays due to inflation...unfortunately. I have been going to Nguyen Huong for over ten years to purchase the Vietnamese pork bologna. On Saturday, January 13, 2024, I bought "xôi khúc" or sweet rice for $5 and pork bologna for $11. As a result, the pork bologna is good as usual but the sweet rice was totally unacceptable because it was sitting on the counter for many days. The sweet rice was completely dried just like eating raw sweet rice and could not be eaten. I immediately threw it away. What a waste of $5. Do not buy the sweet rice "xôi khúc". I do not understand how can a merchant be proudly selling to their loyal customer the food that cannot be eaten by anyone. It's an unethical business practice. If you really care for your customer, please apply "The Golden Rule" will properly justified. Another words, The Golden Rule is often described as 'putting yourself in someone else's shoes', or 'Do unto others as you would have them do unto you'. read more

I have read some of the negative reviews regarding Nguyen Huong and 3-4 of them are based on the proprietors were perceived to be arrogant or the banh chung was too expensive. These are very narrow views of this place and not what Yelp was intended to provide as a place to review the food. 1) if one feels that the owners or workers are 'arrogant' then or if the food is deemed to expensive, don't go there and support the business. These are mom-n-pop shops that are trying to provide a product as best they can. It is so easy to sit at home and post irrelevant information and give 1 star to an establishment without understanding the ramifications. I just found this place this New Year and I think it is a fantastic place with the best banh chung I have ever eaten. I was born in VN and came to the US when I was 5 so I am not an OG. I usually shopped at this place when I was very young in my country. Since they opened the one in a Little SG, I come once in a while. The cha lua tastes different from the other place. I heard that they were made from pork, not turkey. I like some of their specialty and I don't mind the price. Even they're the most pricey in town. What I don't like about this store is they are kind of arrogant. They think they do us a favor by selling their stuffs so I stopped buying anything from them. Not recommend to anyone. read more

This spot has probably the best 'banh chung' in Westminster's 'Bolsa' area. For those that don't know, 'banh chung' is a squared rice cake made from sticky rice on the outer and flavorful pork, mung bean and black pepper in the interior. Usually Vietnamese give these as gifts to friends and relatives during their traditional Lunar New Year. The size of the squared cake varies. some smaller ones are about 8" x 8" and about 3" thick. This place is a bit larger. The price is about $30 apiece when I last checked last year. This is on the pricier side. Other places typically sell it anywhere from $18 to $25 apiece. But this place is worth the extra $5 to me. They have a smaller version of this cake year-round. I think the price is $6-$8 apiece and they are about 4"x4"x2"? They sell out pretty quickly on any given day so if you want to try it, it's best to visit in the morning. read more

Once again a Mommy recommended place for Vietnamese delicacies. Honestly, who would know where to buy Cha Lua (besides the supermarket)? This place specializes in ALL different types of CHA (Vietnamese pork roll/sausage). Remember what your Mama taught you b/c there are lots of options. I basically "choked" and forgot the exact name of the cha I needed. Well, I knew, but wasn't 100%. Lady who worked there helped me out. I simply asked her what cha I needed for my Banh Cuon and she guided me in the right direction. Sweet! CHA LUA: $7 a roll. --it was fresh and warm. --well seasoned. This place is a little place with food :P (who doesnt know that right?) But this place has a traditional banh gio and banh chung. i honestly do not know what they would call it in english but then their foods are delicious :D Banh Gio - this item has ground beef with thinly sliced mushrooms wrapped around in a jello like dough. But the outer appearance is wrapped with banana leaves. It has a trapezoid shape. This item might look weird but its really delicious.My little brother likes to eat this with soy sauce but i like it just the way it taste and look. Its pretty small so you have to eat a couple to feel full. Banh Chung - If you know how big a small Victoria Secret giftbox look like then you know how big this dish is. This item is wrapped with banana leaves just like the one above but then in the middle it has grounded up green beans with pork meat, the out consists of sticky rice. This can get very fulling quick and some people get sick of it (as in eating it too much and wouldnt want to see it) My family calls me weird for being able to eat a big chunk of it without getting sick... But this Banh Chung is really delicious. Even though you leave this item in the fridge the sticky rice will not harden like all the other places that sell banh chung. and the sticky rice stays fresh and soft even after 5 days that i have bought it. Normally the vietnamese community would buy these and banh tet as a gift to each other for the lunar new year. I love there food :P This is not a resturant its more like a togo place. read more

I can't believe I just paid $27 for a banh chung and I'm not mad about it. We were in the area and since it was tet, decided to look up some places to buy banh chung. Nguyen Huong was close to us, so off we went. When we got there, we found out it was $27 for banh chung and $8 for the pickled veggies that went with it. We didn't bring enough cash and they didn't have an ATM machine. We were just a few dollars short and the nice gentleman let us have both, and just said to come back next year. He's so sweet, I felt great leaving there. When we got home, we realized why their banh chung was so pricey. They got the recipe down pat. The rice was chewy and sticky, the mung beans were super soft and creamy, and the pork was extra tender and not dry at all. I've been eating it for 2 days straight and I'm not tired of it yet. I think I'm going to have it again for dinner tonight. $27...totally worth the money. This would be a good gift to give out since it's so well made. Thanks to the team at Nguyen Huong for your kindness and for the awesome food. One thing that could be done better is the younger chubby girl that works at the counter. Smiles are free. If you're going to have ML face, maybe you should work in the back. I almost walked out after seeing how she treated her customers. They have one of the best cha hue, but for $10.50 a roll is pretty steep considering all of their other cha range from $7-8.! Their cha lua wasn't that great and the nam chua was not flavorful at all! a stick of Nam Chua was $14!!! so expensive for something that does not have flavor. Nguyen Huong is well known in the community for making the best banh chung but also at the most expensive price. There banh chung is $29. What makes Nguyen huong banh chung unique is that it tastes like a home made banh chung with main ingredients of sticky rice, mung bean kernels, pork with fatty strips, and seasoning. In process of cooking for several hours, the fat infuses into the sticky rice and makes it soft. You can get a idea of style of cooking when looking at banh chung. If the banana leaves looks discolored, the string looks worn, it's a sign that they cook in in traditional manner. The Nguyen huong banh chung tastes like a supercharged XXL Din Tai Fung sticky rice wrap with Vietnamese flavoring and mung beans. It will only take about 1 minute to heat up a piece that is left in refrigerator since the chewiness remains. WHAT TO WATCH OUT FOR WHEN SELECTING BANH CHUNG Some other banh chung companies make the packaging neat w/o the string to hold it together. The banana leaves are uniform. I suspect these banh chung in some cases contain pre-cooked items to speed up the cooking, and possibly wrapped in aluminum foil during cooking process to hold nearly perfect square shape together. When cooking is done, they may add a new string to make it look nice. For example, the mung beans may be precooked and mashed together. When you open the cooked banh chung, it will be less sticky, the sticky rice won't stick to mung beans, and you'll have 3 separate layers of the sticky rice, mung beans, and pork. When it comes time to heat up, you'll spend 2-3 minutes in microwave to heat up a piece. I've tried out Banh Chung from several places this holiday. Nguyen Huong: Best. Optimal proportion of meat and mung beans. Van Restaurant (not the bakery): $22, second bast. Bigger size. Comes hot out of oven. Too much meat. Minh Phung: I didn't like the taste. Would not get again. Sweetish. Some people may prefer a sweetish taste to the Banh Chung. read more

I've never been to this place but was given one of their banh chung by a friend. This place makes the best Banh Chung I've ever had and I usually don't like banh chung or ever really eat it. A friend of mine gave me this, after I took one bite it became several bites, next thing I'm eating 1/4 of it in one sitting then I finished the entire thing over a course of 3 days. Just like the other yelper said "even though you leave this item in the fridge the sticky rice will not harden like all the other places that sell banh chung and the sticky rice stays fresh and soft even after 5 days". I have walked by here a million times and never noticed it. The store always looks empty. I decided to come in one day after reviewing yelp. The Cha lua is $7.50 for a roll. I wasn't sure it was worth it until I got home and sliced it. It's delicious and super fresh. Same for their banh it. Would definitely return for more Cha lua. I have gotten too many old Cha lua at grocery stores so I'm delighted to find this place. read more

Awesome banh chung (square cake) and gio lua, gio thu (vietnamese sausages). Gio cost about $7, $8/piece. Banh chung cost $25/piece. Worth every penny. It's a small shop so if you drive by you probably won't notice it. Parking can get crazy if you go during lunch time as the parking lot is for all the restaurants/businesses in the plaza. They only accept cash. Banh chung- just the right amount of ingredients. Not too peppery like most places. Normally, I would fry it after it's been sitting in the fridge for a few days. This place used to have a good Square rice cake ( banh chung) however My brother in law got 2 yesterday one for his house and one for my mom. This morning she cut it out and the top one is still not cooking. My mom called them for the exchange and when I got there instead of apologized me and exchange me the new one the lady said this is the old square rice cake that I have last year. That is so ridiculous when the woman said that. I almost arguing with the lady. They don't admit their mistake and said the cake I bought is from last year. I told her if it from last year why the wrap is still look new and why I have to keep the cake for 1 yr to come here to complain. That doesn't make sense and why I have to keep that cake for 1 yr for. That is piss me off when they don't admit their mistake. They think their rice cake is good and don't responsibly what they did wrong. FYI....If you guy don't want to go thru like what I did think it twice before you go there to buy the square rice cake. I bought $27 banh chung. I ate right away. Tasted very good. But I couldn't finish the whole banh so I put in the fridge. The next day, I warmed it up but it no longer taste the same. It tasted just like as any other banh chung. I don't think I'll buy banh chung from Nguyen Huong again. They also sale banh chung year around but the size is super small. They charge $4.50. That price is just outrageous. With that price for a small (super small) banh chung, I'd rather go for Pho with a few extra bucks. I also tried their gio too but I don't like the taste. I never buy gio or cha que at Nguyen Huong again. Never. read more
