I always stop by here and get a few cha lua for my family that don't live here. They always request it before my road trip. They have fresh gio lua, but I get the ones in the fridge due to the drive. Last year we were introduced to Duc Huong for their "fabulous" bánh Chung (Vietnamese traditional squared glutinous rice cake for Lunar New Year) that we loved it very much. So naturally we came back for more; we purchased 4 pieces so that we can gift away to someone! Of course the cakes had been kept in the refrigerator (not freezer) as for being meat product! This morning we decided to open one as we couldn't wait any longer for that craving taste!...then we found disappointments all over. Here is the list: 1- The balance between mung bean, glutinous rice and meat is no longer there. Too much rice was used. 2- Scattered areas of uncooked rice were evident! 3- High pricing at $38 a piece does not reflect well here. For those reasons we decided to return the goods. The man at the counter wasn't impressed and had became upset. He started to accuse us for putting the cake in the freezer. He claimed how unethical we are to return the cakes and cursed that karma will find us to harm our children and grand children!!! How unethical for a business only take cash and do not issue receipts??? We didn't want to putting up a scene in public but feel that it is important for the public to know, so here is what the future customers need ti understand what can happen to them! We believe in good quality deserved good price, means when it is not ,.... As one can see from my picture, you will come out completely satisfied. What is Cha lua? Cha lua is basically made of pork and the best translation would be Pork Roll. Traditionally, cha lua is made of lean pork, potato starch, garlic, ground black pepper and nuoc mam (fish sauce). The pork here is pounded really well until it becomes a paste and then rolled in banana leaves to be steamed. It is also important to note the pork has to be pounded until it becomes pasty; it cannot be chopped or ground. There are also many types of cha, including my favorite cha chien, which is fried, and cha hue which includes whole black peppercorns. Even though this place is a small mom and pop 10x10 store, they specialize in cha lua, cha chien, and many types of cha. It goes well with banh cuon, white flour crepes, or com tham (broken rice dish), in a banh mi sandwich, with rice, or by itself. A good snack overall. The prices are decent as well as friendly and fast service. Right next to BOILING CRAB, but a BIG hassle to park on weekends. Park in the back if you don't want to waste time looking. read more

Chả lụa is always hot and good, but last time I bought the bánh dầy and it tasted horrible, kinda uncooked so I had to throw them away.

I used to support this store wherever I go to travel in LA or Texas. But the last time I bought cha in LA location, the cha was not cook well done and the taste of cha went down the quality. I felt disappointed with this business location. Also I have read a few bad customer services, bad quality of food for the consumer complaints. The date of this review is November 5, 2016. Reviews on Yelp and elsewhere, all point to Duc Huong Cha Lua as having the best Cha Lua (Vietnamese Pork Roll) in Southern California. Today I went there, around 10:40 a.m., to sample their Cha Lua. I purchased one large roll, four small regular rolls, and one spicy roll. All the rolls were very fresh as they were still warm and hot. They also have other varieties of the Cha Lua. The large roll is priced at $10.50 while the smaller ones are priced at $5.00. The store is very small in size but the parking lot is very large. There are many Vietnamese restaurants in the area as well as an Asian supermarket. The store manager was very cordial and helpful. She explained to me the varieties of Cha Lua that they make. The store sells only the Cha Lua product line. When I got home, everybody wanted to try the Cha Lua. By the way, they were still warm. I sliced the roll and sautéed them in a pan. I cracked a few eggs on top. The entire roll was consumed in one sitting. Just be aware that they only accept cash. But have no fear, a Bank of America ATM is only a couple of minutes away on foot. My suggestion is to arrive there early before the customers of Boiling Crab (primarily younger Asian folks) hog the parking lot around noon time. **** Inline update as of 11/12/2016 **** After a week has gone by, my family had the opportunity to try one of the smaller rolls. These smaller rolls are priced at $5.00 each compared to the larger roll priced at $10.50. For sure the larger roll is better value. I carved a few slices (from the smaller roll) to use for cooking. The taste of the Cha Lua was overwhelmed with the banana leaf. It appears to me that the moisture from the banana leaf found its way to the meat inside. Most of my family members did not like the smell or the taste of the smaller Cha Lua rolls. We could not taste the meat but instead tasted heavy banana leaf. I am not sure if leaving the meat in the roll, wrapped with the banana leaf, has contributed to the overwhelming banana taste of these rolls. Perhaps I should have removed the meat inside the smaller rolls and wrapped them with seran wrap (plastic). read more

My family has been coming here for years. Its the only place I can think of that they go to get cha from. Whenever family from out of state/country come, they go here. Whenever we're in the OC, we come here. Its a small little store in a huge plaza so there's tons of parking - this store has a variety of different kinds of Cha and its usually always fresh (they do have some that are in the fridge/freezer area). Small, unassuming shop that specializes in cha in a giant strip mall. We walked in with only 30 minutes before closing time. The man behind the register answered all of our questions patiently and kindly and even gave us tips on how long the cha would last in the fridge or how we should properly defrost it if we somehow had to freeze them. The cha was really fresh and you even smell/taste the fragrance of the leaves. The texture is soft yet springy. I'll be coming back to try their other kinds of cha.
