Stopped in this charming upscale neighborhood restaurant for happy hour a few fridays ago, busy with a wait but had fun energy. Had a strawberry basil lemonade while I waited that was sweet and refreshing. The food here is a hidden treasure among a sea of mediocre neighbors and the steak special is at an unbeatable price. This Shawnee location of Nick and Jake's is relatively new, having once been a Ruby Tuesday's restaurant. The space is modern and spacious- more of a restaurant vibe and family friendly. However, the menu comprises of traditional bar and grill fare- shareable appetizers, burgers, and sandwiches. Pastas, salads and comfort food (i.e. meatloaf, chicken fried steak, chicken tenders) are also available. The service was excellent and prompt. Bussers cleared tables promptly, our server refilled our drinks and checked in routinely, the manager was ever present in the dining areas, bringing in meals and checking in on guests. The food was okay, in my opinion. The family enjoyed their Mac and Cheese, chicken fried steak and chicken fingers. I ordered a Saturday special-mushroom chicken grill sandwich. The chicken breast was dry- dry dry dry. Did I mention it was dry? Still, I was able to enjoy the side of jalapeño corn grits. All in all, I will try Nick and Jake's again (I've been told that their Sunday brunch is wonderful). The service was great - the food wasn't. I felt like the meatloaf and mashed potatoes and peas that I had was a just a $15.00 TV dinner. The mash tasted like they were made with water and the meatloaf was slightly gelatinous and my second bite had something hard in it - at first I was mortified that it was part of my tooth and it turns out it was a tiny piece of bone - gross! My dinner companion ordered the French dip and it was very tough (like thick dried beef suitable for S.O.S.) and dry. My 8 yr old, niece who had been there before implored us NOT to try the bread pudding! The place is nice enough, the menu SOUNDS delicious and quite varied - we're less than a mile from this location, trust me we wanted to love it! We're lacking in sit-down restaurants out here! I have heard good things about the other locations, the brunch in particular. I don't know if it's because it's new or the management isn't used to that type of volume or exactly what happened but we were really unhappy with the food itself. As I said, the service was stellar! Refills, friendly, knew the menu, brought out some grapes and cheezits while we waited for our meals...very disappointing. It's restaurant week and COVID-19 won't stop me from trying new things at great restaurants. Their lunch and dinner menus for restaurant week are made for carry out so we don't have to miss the great tastes of Kansas City. Perfect date night with flavor for days. Starting course chicken gumbo and Caesar salad. Gumbo had perfect spice and lots of flavor good amount of chicken but light on the shrimp but delicious. Pork chops with scallop potatoes and asparagus the char and grill of the pork chop kept it moist and tender he asparagus was crisp and the potatoes with a perfect cheesy flavor. My favorite was the salmon and risotto the salmon had a rich creamy taste yeah that melts in your mouth. The risotto is cooked perfection with lots of flavor and again crunchy asparagus. We ended the dinner with dessert the rich and sweet carrot cake with cream cheese frosting and chocolate cake that melts in your mouth. My husband and I have visited the restaurant a few times since it's open late and reverse happy hour has some tasty appetizers like the crab cake. We tried their brunch and although it was good we weren't sure if it matched the priced we paid for it. We normally love coming to Nick and Jakes. Mother's Day was not their day. Ran out of lots of things/specials on the menu before we got there. Got a couple of prime ribs (asked for Med. Rare) and they were cooked well...? WHO ordersa beautiful cut of prime rib and eats it when it's cooked all the way? No blood. Disappointing. We ended up at Nick and Jake's after receiving awful service at some "other place" nearby. We joked with our waitress that we were impressed after receiving waters, and told her about our experience elsewhere. She told the manager, who promptly brought a complimentary appetizer and thanked us for giving them a chance. I was super impressed with how attentive our waitress was and we all felt like they wanted us to be there. The pear martini was perfect for a summer patio with friends and the prime rib quesadillas are reason enough for us to be planning our next visit. We are officially fans!!! read more

Both my sons ordered burgers The one was completely round all the way around except for where there was a bite mark out The other one was round everywhere else except for 3/4 of a burger was cut off. This Shawnee location is pretty new. My boyfriend and I tried it right when they opened. The food and service were not very good, it was below average bar food. We decided to give it another shot a couple weeks ago. It was much better! I got the fried chicken sandwich and my boyfriend ordered the cuban. Both were very good. Made reservations for here 3 weeks ago, they put us in a booth that was a really tight squeeze. No biggie, we made it work! We had great service! Manager checked on us a few times to. I will say I'm not one to complain about food but my steak was over cooked as well as my asparagus. Seriously, the asparagus came to the table dried to a crisp (so so so disappointing) I ordered a vodka soda and my first drink was made wrong. Other than that everyone else enjoyed their food! We also ordered the bread pudding and brownie and I'm not sure if they were supposed to be cold (usually bread pudding is always warm) but they weren't warm at all. We went in for brunch today based on recommendations from several people that the brunch is great. We were not let down. You have a great spread it brunch with prime rib meatloaf mac and cheese couple of different pastas a really good corned beef poached egg hash and the Grits were phenomenal. The desserts were great and the cold spread was great. Jennifer was our server and she was fantastic. I am very big on service and she pre bust our table accordingly, and even made us a couple of Iced Teas to go which I always feel it's a nice touch to end the experience. Not impressed. Two parties seated before us and then everyone seated after us in one dining room, were served before us. Waited 30 minutes for our food with 2 kids under the age of 6. Great food, nicely remodeled sit-down restaurant in an area where a restaurant like this was sorely needed. Patio area is also nice. It is usually pretty busy, so parking spots can be hard to find. She was very dismissive and could only accommodate one request at a time when the food was delivered one person wanted a salad not fries and she had to return to the table two times to understand the mistake. I want to like this place. The food was good. The atmosphere could be nice. The noise level is just awful. Could not have a conversation with my husband across the table.
