I ordered the Nick's Famous Ham n Eggs with hash and white toast, and wow -- that ham is on another level. The ham is hands-down the best I've ever had. Tender, juicy slices with this perfect light sweetness that cuts through without being overpowering, and crucially, not overly salty like 90% of the ham you get at diners. It was flavorful, melt-in-your-mouth good, and clearly high-quality -- I couldn't stop raving about it to my friend the whole meal. Paired with perfectly cooked over-easy eggs, crispy hash that tasted homemade, and classic white toast, it was the ideal hearty breakfast combo. Portions are generous without being ridiculous, prices are super reasonable for the quality and location, and the vibe is that classic old-school diner feel -- no frills, just solid food and friendly service. I'm glad I went out of my way to go here. Although I was a bit perplexed by nobody coming to greet me at the door (the sign at the podium says 'someone will be right with you') I just went in and seated myself and that seemed good enough. I changed my mind last minute to Nick's Breakfast Sandwich, which is eggs, cheese, ham on sourdough. The default is strawberry jam, but people who mix sweet and savory are deeply troubled and chaotic people. So I got mayo instead. Was shocked at how insanely good that ham is. That sealed the deal for me. Love the service that comes with some lovely charm and a bit of the ol spunkiness. I love this place, and the service is always fantastic, but $39 (tip included) for breakfast for one though is way too much for a diner. So I love Nick's cafe! It's right across the street from my favorite park. I go here with family on the weekends when I have a day off! I like sitting inside of the bar because I'm usually a little chilly. For food, we love the fact that we could have lunch for breakfast! I love corned beef hash so that usually is my go to but today I try them Machaca and I highly recommend it. I was wondering why they were not calling anyone and then they called like 5 groups at a time. The food was okay not great, chilaquiles are good. Not crazy about the potatoes and coffee. The restaurant looks very old which I know that's their thing but it's all dusty. Restroom is in bad shape but clean. There's a small parking lot and plenty of parking on the street. Coffee and water dropped off never refilled not one single time. It was 88 degrees outside and humid bare minium make sure water glasses are checked on. Food came out quickly and was good overall. Expensive for what you got portion wise truthfully 23 dollars for a scramble. Whatever. Waited another 20 minutes for the check to come and a further 15 for nobody to come by to collect payment. Asked the waiter for some foil to take a muffin to go. He forgot and never came back. I had to walk in myself and pay the bill and ask somebody else completely for the foil. The food taste and quality is a 5/5, however the service and the wait times are a 4/5. We stopped in for a 10 AM Sunday brunch and had to wait 45 minutes to be seated inside on a very windy morning. There are a lot of tables outside and inside is counter seating only. It's basically a large capital U. We were seated at the counter in the corner that was directly next to the other seat next to me, so I basically ate on top of the stranger next to me. It took a very long time to place our order, we did not receive quick drink refills, actually we only received one our entire meal, and then took an extremely long time to pay for the check. I almost had to stand up to get our waiter to notice to take the card and check after we finished. They have a very small parking lot, exactly 4 spaces, otherwise it will be free street parking. They do have a lot of great options on the menu so it's the sort of place where you'll be able to get a lot of different things. I started off with a cup of coffee, which is my go to, and always nice for breakfast, and then followed up with the Cajun Benedict. It had spicy turkey sausage, and I added avocado, which was a great combination. The eggs were cooked perfectly, and I loved the grilled onions addition. The hashbrowns on the side were really crispy and I enjoyed them. We also ordered a biscuit to share and it wasn't my favorite, but still good. It was not the traditional buttermilk type biscuit more of a cake type of biscuit. I plan to give it another try in the near future, and overall would recommend because the food quality was great, but I would really hope the service is better next time. read more

Bf has had this place on his list for a long time and was happy to finally cross this off his list. We stopped by on a Saturday around lunchtime and the wait was about 30 minutes for indoor seating. The inside seating area is small with only counter seating and outdoor they only have a handful of tables available so wait times could vary. Lucky for us the wait was not too long. For food we ordered the ham and eggs. They also offer a smaller portion for "light eaters" so I could order a smaller portion of ham and eggs. The ham was slightly sweet and overall enjoyable but there parts that were on the tougher side, so be sure to eat together with their red salsa. The hash browns could have been crispier but I'm sure it could be easily fixed by asking next time. Overall this is one of those places you have to try in Los Angeles. This cafe is a historic hidden gem lookout for the pig out front !! Located across from the LA State Historic Park too, highly recommend taking a walk here either before or after. There is a lunch rush so come either before or after if you want a seat inside. There is outdoor seating as well, but the day we went it was pouring so we really wanted an indoor spot. Inside the setup takes you yearssss back, with diner counters and ruby stools. The cafe is embellished with LA history and pig art, ranging from sketches to figurines. The portions here are HUGE trust me!! My group and I ordered, Nick's Famous Ham and Eggs, Mini Stack of Pancakes (3), toasted Blueberry Muffin, Breakfast Burrito, French Toast (3), and Chilaquiles. The Ham and Eggs were AMAZINGGGG and HUGEE, we did not expect to see an entire slab of roasted ham the size of their plates. The ham is well cooked and tender with a sweet honey glaze to compliment the savory ham. No complaints whatsoever, the 5 of us devoured it HA. The bed of hash underneath was exceptional as well. I haven't had a hash as good as this one. The top, bottom, and edges are crispy without compromising the center which was still soft and full of potato. The pancakes were ginormous too despite being called the mini stack, they're definitely shareable. The toasted Blueberry Muffin was just okay, a bit dry, it's a muffin cut in half with toasted edges. French toast was also 3 slices of thick baguette, didn't get a taste so I can't speak on it looked a bit plain. I had the Chilaquiles which were tasty, but not to my expectations. When served the chips looked crispy, but upon the first bite the sauce had already soaked through and all of the chips were soft. I was expecting at least the outer pieces to still be crispy just so I could I have a different texture. Even so, taste wise very delicious. The perfect bite encompasses everything all in one, a spicy saucy chip, a chunk of the grilled cotija, avocado with sour cream and house salsa, bit of the egg YUM! This is definitely a hidden gem located near chinatown. The portions are huge and I shared a plate of the California scramble with chorizo and we still had leftovers! TL:DR - Breakfast burrito was stuffed, but use the salsa. I had to come to downtown LA early one morning and had a craving for a breakfast burrito. I had never heard of Nick's before, but after seeing the ratings on yelp I decided to try it out. Just South of the Los Angeles State Historic Park, Nick's Cafe is an old school looking diner. There are a couple of tables outside and a full on 50's counter on the inside. Even though it was like 8:15am, the place was packed with blue collar workers and people grabbing food to go. That's a good sign in my book. I ordered the breakfast burrito with sausage, and was surprised when they handed it to me. There was a serious heft to the package and when I finally unwrapped the burrito and took a bite, it was just packed with ingredients. There is a strong taste of potato and bell peppers, which I don't mind, because I love both, but it did lack a little bit of flavor. Fortunately they packed two different salsas for me to use, and those brought the oomph I wanted with my breakfast burrito. By the time I finished the burrito I was stuffed. I wasn't really planning on getting this full before 9am, but here I was ready to go back to sleep. Overall, great breakfast burrito for the price.
