Found this place by accident. The original spot we were going to was closed on that day. I have passed by this place numerous of times but today, after viewing the high ratings and reviews, we decided to give this place a shot. Let me tell you this: looks may be so deceiving! My significant other and I came here to grab breakfast/brunch and can I say YUMMMMMMY?! :) When you take a seat in their old-traditional-diner-like place, you will love atmosphere this place has. The waitress/main worker, Julie, will make your visit enjoyable. She's a delight. There was a bunch of regulars that were there and I can understand why they're regulars! Nick's Cafe has been serving terrific breakfasts since opening in 1948. I only recently started dining at Nick's after reading a "Top 10 Breakfast Spots" article in the LA Weekly. I can't believe I've been sleeping on Nick's this long because they've quickly become one of my favorite places for breakfast in Los Angeles. I'm almost always stopping by on the weekends when they have an extended menu featuring over ten varieties of eggs Benedict. My usual poison is the eggs Florentine variation, but I've also tried their biscuits-and-gravy as well as the vegetarian omelette. Every dish I've consumed at Nick's has been superb. And typically I don't indulge in pancakes, but I must say that Nick's serves some of the best pancakes I have ever tasted. Seriously amazing stuff. Easy to Miss, Hard to Forget Read the reviews on this police haunt, so my dude and I trekked downtown to give it a try. We were impressed. The food - great. Exactly what we wanted - hearty fare. Tasty. Flavorful. And colorful atmosphere. It is a cop place. So be prepared to eat next to guns and cuffs. At least there are no perps. Decided to try this place after looking for a nearby breakfast place and found this hidden gem. The food is really delicious, they serve a good portion of food and super tasteful. The best part of the location was the service. Kim and the young guy who were serving were incredible! She really created connections with her customers and makes them feel welcomed. One of the very few times yelp has failed me, and i was really mad. first the place looked legit, we got a table outside, because it was busy. so lets begin. 1. we got sat down at a dirty table by the bus boy ( i don't really care) but the waitress did she yelled at the poor kid who was only trying to help. 2. 1 waitress for 5+ tables with at least 4+ people at every table. 3. took forever to get my food. 4. i got their famous ham and eggs, boy was it disappointing. the hash browns were BURNT basic eggs and while the ham was good it was not worth 10 bucks. 5. when i got my food we had no utensils and no condiments. i kid you not they had us share ONE bottle of ketchup between 3 tables...really? as busy as you are i would expect you to have more than one bottle of ketchup. 6. we weren't the only ones complaining about the slow service the table behind us that had about 7 people waiting were getting grumpy because they were waiting forever for their food. i have no idea what yelpers saw in this place while the waitress was nice and trying her best, trying to serve 5 tables with 4+ people at each table just isn't going to happen, not to include the people inside the place. the prices are insane too, 4 bucks for orange juice? Friend had the $20 for $10 Groupon so we ventured out to the odd "neighborhood" that houses Nicks. It's basically in the middle of nowhere, so not a place you'll just "happen upon". The place isn't much to look at, but the staff is super friendly and the vibe extends to the patrons... by the time you leave you feel like you know everyone in the joint. Breakfasts looked amazing but we wanted lunch fare. Sandwiches were good, served quick. I thought the onion rings were better than the fries but both taste homemade - much better than the frozen mess you'll find at other places. I see that people rave about their breakfast but unfortunately I had already eaten and was just walking around looking for drinks. Only having gotten a fruit bowl and some snapples, I can't rate them on their food. Service: There's only one waitress serving all of the customers, so expect to wait a while for her to take your order. We went on Monday at noon, and waited 25 minutes to order our food and an extra 15 for the food to come out. I think they are a bit understaffed; they could another waiter. Minus one star. Parking: There are only 5 parking spaces available in their private lot, but there's plenty of street parking around the area. The neighborhood looks a little ghetto. I was a little scared :( I bought a Groupon for this diner ($20 worth), and only had to pay $1.50 at the end. This place is CASH ONLY. I don't know if I would come back again. I really enjoyed my experience here yesterday! We came on a Saturday around noon...for breakfast :) There was a wait to be seated, but all in all we were seated relatively quickly. Since it was the weekend we had the Eggs Benedict (California style) in addition to a Machaca Skillet. Everything was flavorful and each bite was particularly satisfying. Portion size to price is reasonable, and everyone was friendly and in good spirits -- very nice lively atmosphere. Cash only, park where you can find it, and enjoy! I guess only 4 stars because I'm a harsh critic to breakfast food and unless I'm completely blown away, or dream about it the next day, I'll give it a 5. This is by far one of the best breakfast places in Los Angeles, period. It's why they've been around over 70 years. The place is a like a time warp from the mid-'40s. You can imagine oldl cars parked outside and men wearing fedoras. But the food, my God, the food! Please get their ham, which they are famous for. Any Mexican breakfast you get is outstanding. Went to this restaurant for brunch on a Sunday at about 2:30PM. Overall, I would probably have given this spot a 4 for food, but the 1 or 2 for service makes it balance out to a 3. This place is in the Chinatown area of Downtown LA, and it is a small diner type place that probably hasn't been remodeled since it opened in 1948. That is awesome -- a little piece of history and nostalgia. The menu looks great, and the food was solid; however, the service just kind of sucked. I mean the people were friendly, when you received service; however, it just was pretty much non-existent. We walked up to the hostess stand, which is outside under a canopy and waited to be seated. We waited and waited for about 6-7 minutes for someone to come out, and that didn't happen. We then asked someone who told us to wait a few more minutes. Eventually, a lady came out who told us "We can go inside and look around for a place to sit if we want". ??!!? We found two good seats on the end of the counter. The server took our order about 5 minutes after we sat; however, forgot our drinks. 15 minutes later, we asked someone else for our drinks, who brought us out half of our drink order -- along with our food at the same time. We then had to ask our actual server for our drinks a 2nd time. We had California Eggs Benedict which were pretty darn good and tasty. We also had a Reuben Pastrami Melt, also pretty good. No real complaints about the food, just the service. This diner makes a lot of "Top 10" lists in LA for diner food; however, I wouldn't place it in that category. We had a much better meal with equally good service at the Nickel Diner downtown. read more

Located near LA's Chinatown, Nick's serves up some of the best breakfast food I've ever had. The Pan San was what first caught my eyes and I'm glad i went with it. 3 huge pancakes, 2 eggs and your choice of sausage, ham or bacon. Since they are well known for it, I went with the ham which was friggin' AWESOME! Add a nice cup of diner style coffee and I'm in heaven! The woman serving at the counter was super cool and was understanding explaining to us ignorant New Yorkers what tri tip is. She was also super attendant with making sure our mugs were always topped off with coffee and when she brought us our food she told us to "rock it out". That we did. Prices are reasonable, but keep in mind that Nick's is cash only. However, they have an ATM in the restaurant if you're short a few bucks. I have nothing else to say except that we had this in NY and that I can't wait to go one more time before I head home to NY. So, get to Nick's and rock it out. Checked in through yelp which was good didn't wait as long. My coffee cup was never empty. I'm giving 3 stars because: The food took forever, our time waiting was longer than we took eating. We were seated outside and it started raining we were told to scoot in to avoid getting wet. There was a family next to us which didn't mind once they left another came, except the staff kept telling us to move away, mind you we didn't move an inch. The tarp had loads of rain coming down when I mentioned this to the waitress she said we can move a little before it. Food was good but they definitely need better customer service. Covid Review! Came here for breakfast on a Wednesday morning around 8:30/9. There was plenty of seating. I think they had more seats outside than they do inside. They provide hand sanitizer at the entrance and on the tables. They had fans and tarps for shade. The food is great as always.
