I probably drove past Nick's 50 times before I noticed the fading sign claiming, "The Best Homemade Gyros In America." I take my gyros very seriously so I had to give them a try. Quite simply, Nick's is by far, the best gyros I have ever tasted. Perfectly seasoned and cooked, not greasy, generous portions and delicious tzatziki sauce. Much more intense and complex flavors than any other gyros I have tried. Probably was here a dozen times for gyros before I could tear myself away to try the chicken shishkebob sandwich. Visited Nicks for the first time after moving to the area and was overall pretty pleased. I was looking for a new place to grab a gyro, chicken pita etc and this place was solid. The staff was attentive and the food itself was tasty. The gyro meat was sliced thin and you are given a solid portion in the gyro sandwich. Also ordered a side of fries which were good however could've been cooked longer as some were more done than others & a side of Mozz sticks which were the typical frozen drop and go ones. The home Made Gyros, complete garbage. Dry as hell and just inedible. I have know idea how this place is still open. Not only does there famous home made gyro suck, but so does everything else. I ordered a brat and literally watched the guy throw it in the microwave. I ate it anyway to try and of course garbage. I told my friend this story and he said "well why did you order a brat" I said cause the gyros sucks and it was on the !?!&$& menu ! read more

Fantastic experience at Nick's today. My mom recently had surgery and I wanted to surprise her with one of her favorites...gyros! So I decided to be a hero and treat my entire family. Called the day before and easily placed an order over the phone. What's awesome is that you can buy gyros by the pound (thanks to Jimmy for recommending this option). They were just finishing up with my order when I came to pick it up. Everything was super fresh. And the portions were extremely generous. We were provided with an entire pan of onions and tomatoes (and the raw onions were seasoned with fresh dill!). We also were given pleny of pitas and a ton of tzatziki. Everyone in my family commented on how the gyros were so well seasoned. So if you're looking for a family syle dining option or a party platter, Nick's is a great option. read more

Before the cold winter weather set in, I was eating at their outside tables adjacent to the parking lot. I last ate there in October 2021 and I have to say that the Gyros and the French fries are very good. When the weather breaks, I will stop by there again. They have many items on the menu but my best tip is try the Gyros and fries. Recommended. read more

I was feeling so sick when I first walked in here .... I feel so dizzy from not eating anything all morning to lunch .... my husband hurried and ordered me a gyro plate and sprite .... This is such a nice fast food! I ordered a cheeseburger which comes with fries and a drink. It was fresh and hot and the fries has a generous portion. The cheeseburger is juicy and tastes so good and the fries is perfectly seasoned. Their fries and cheeseburger is definitely better than chick-fil-a. I would love to come back. First time trying out Nicks Drive-In as our go to spot for gyros (Wallys) for many years has closed. Must say we were not impressed. Gyros meat was plentiful but lacking flavor and tzatziki sauce was too runny and tasted vinegary. Cheese fries were just possibly slices of American cheese or velveeta cheese melted on top. Not impressed. Also requested them to be well done/crispy and they were nothing like that but instead very soggy. Overall disappointed. read more

Lately I've been on a gyro kick and so I finally had the chance to stop at Nick's to give theirs a try. The parking lot is situated in a congested area so it was tricky to pull in. Not their fault but worth mentioning for first timers. It's a counter service style place very clean and consistently busy. Lot of regulars. Big menu board that I paid zero attention to given my quest for gyros. It's one of those places where everything is good. I ordered the gyro sandwich meat well done, fries and a coke. Everyone was friendly and made me feel welcome as I said it was my first visit. There is a tv on for those eating in. What felt like two minutes later and my order was up. First thing I noticed is the small coke was really small like a kiddie cup haha. It stood out because we are so used to huge drinks at fast food places. It was the perfect amount. Anyway who cares...onto the main show. The gyro was incredible, really really good. So good you think about it afterwards, longingly. What stood out was the meat has a peppery bite to it. It's by far the best meat I've ever tasted. You can eat it by itself especially when it's well done and has that nice char. The tzatiki is perfect, all of the flavors came together perfectly. Mouth watering. Of course it's super messy but whatever, that's the price we must pay. The fries were better than I was expecting, so that was a nice surprise. They were nice and brown, I'm so sick of places with weak fries. Needless to say I returned like a day or two later and ordered the same thing. It was just as epic. I also used DoorDash to get it delivered and I had them put everything on the side so I could assemble at home. This place is consistently great. Love this place, I'm a new regular. I have been coming here for probably 15 years so to say that I was very disappointed today to be here when a bunch of ignorant kids with no masks on walked right past the sign that said "Masks Required" into the restaurant and the owner said nothing. He took their orders and apparently more important to him took their money and said nothing. I am a little bit older and there was an elderly couple there as well, all showing our respect for others by wearing masks and these kids are walking all over the place touching tables with not a care in the world. I will not be back here if this is the way that the owner feels that his long time customers mean nothing. read more

I really hate to post this and especially being a very long time customer but here is my thought. The last few times ( about 3 months ago and yesterday 12/23/18) I stopped in for a Gyros I have found them extremely peppery to the point its not even enjoyable to eat. Has Nicks changed there delicious original recipe that that they had since day one and will it ever go back to the original taste. Sorry to say as of now I will not be returning until I hear that the pepper or what ever pepper like substance there using is removed ;-( read more

Check out my older review but years ago I had dined with this business on a few occasions, however it never hit home for me. Many years ago when the original Nick's drive-in was operating at Pulaski and Devon (Peterson Park) I visited this Edison Park location and inquired if there was any relation. At the time they said "yes". When inquiring at the (original) in Peterson park, the owner said "No". So I'm driving through the area the other day looking for a lunch spot & feeling like a fish sandwich combo. Didn't feel like Wendy's, so thought I'd give this location another go. Quickly scanning reviews on my android via Yelp, I wasn't feeling good about it but I noticed the sign was different and omitted the #2 which made me wonder. I walked in and gasped when I saw the owner from the PP location is now here!. Now it must be said that the Peterson park location has been closed for many years now, roughly eight years. It had been operating there for about twenty years and it was a neighborhood favorite of all char lovers on the North side of Chicago. It was a solid char grill with fantastic cheeseburgers, Italian beef, Greek food items like gyros, Grecian chicken & etc, barbeque chicken, man you name it, everything char and everything so good. My first time ever trying a triple cheeseburger was via a dare by a friend in elementary school. My first time trying their food, I think I was in the fourth grade and never ceased until the PP location closed. The food was great as was the value and because of word of mouth they would experience crowded lunch hours with lines streaming out of their door. This occurred daily. Man do I miss that place. Solid food. As happy as I was to see the old man and recognize a few other of their long term employees and reminisce, the legend didn't stand up for today's times. If someone told me that all of their items were prepackaged I would believe it because it tastes that way. It could all be frozen goods. A fish sandwich with fries and a drink ran me about six and a half dollars which is a deal. Although, the tastes were average. Pricing here is below average for a char grill, in other words its inexpensive but the quality is downgraded from most other Greek owned char restaurants of the same caliber. Today, I wouldn't think of this spot for a good gyros. It was unfortunate to see them operating like this but won't tarnish the good memories. The place is dated, like 1980's dated and is in need of an updated interior and attitude. I gotta say, in today's time, the new thing is "hand cut" fries. It's simple. Wash the potato, press it through a hand stamp and then fry. There's no reason to offer anything but the real thing... Frozen fries were last decade guys! read more

I went back two weeks ago, for the first time in several months. Before I went, I stopped at Trader Joe's and picked up some tzatziki sauce that I was planning to use, assuming Nick's was still using the runny sauce I had reported about earlier. I am happy to confirm that this visit was just like the ones I'd had for many years: The sauce is good again -- thick and flavorful -- and the gyros themselves are still fabulous. Back to five stars! This makes me very happy! And on top of that, one of the guys recognized and remembered me, and smiled and gave me extra sauce! He seemed so pleased! From December, 2016 - A reduction to four stars: It breaks my heart to do this, but I have to update the review and downgrade it by a star, especially after somebody wrote a similar review so I knew it wasn't just me. In my original review, from about 14 months ago, I mentioned that they had forgotten to put the sauce on my sandwich. I found out on my next visit I was wrong - they drastically changed the sauce, such that it's now thin and runny and gets absorbed into the meat so you can't even tell it's there. I've tried asking for extra and putting more on, and the effect is the same. So disappointing. The meat itself is still great, but if you want a wonderful sandwich you will have to provide your own sauce. I have mentioned this to the guy at the register, and also called about it, and I've been told I need to talk to their dad, the owner, because he's cheap and wants to save money and doesn't care. Such a shame. This place has the BEST double cheeseburger I've had in a long time. The burger is always moist and juicy. Nick's has a traditional small dinner feel. Went to the restaurant Dec. 2, 2021 for lunch during a Chicago food trip. Ordered the Gyros sandwich and daughter ordered the Chicken Kabob plate (Nice charred taste.) with greek potatoes. Nicks Drive-In. Not drive through. I bought the Gyro sandwich and a small drink. The Guro meat is apparently their own recipe and it isn't too bad. It's got a little zip to it which I like but I'm detecting a lot more lamb meat than I'm used to at any Kronos Gyro restaurant. It's not bad just not what I'm familiar with. The service was done without smiles or kindness. I felt like each movement the workers made had some anger in it, if that makes any sense. And now, here at the end of my meal, I'm full but not satisfied (guess I'm just a Kronos man). I'm not sure I'll be back. read more

This place is not a place I would ever go for Gyros sandwich or anything else! Gyros is tasteless, small amounts and their fries too dry and few. There's no atmosphere and not very clean looking place. The worst decor of a restaurant interior. Absolutely no taste. It looks like it's been there for ages and was put together by two people by nailing few plywood panels together and calling it a restaurant with horrible food. Avoid this place if you have a taste for Greek fast food. Any other Greek food type place would be much better. Actually they don't deserve any star at all but I'm being charitable today! read more
