Disappointed in the decline of this place. I've been going here for years and the sandwiches have always been HUGE and impressive. Seems like they are downgrading their quality as the $7 chicken sandwich I bought was so so tiny. Nick's is a local legend, with consistently good, simple food. It's the kind of place that local families have been going to for the last 20-30 years. It's nice to walk in and still see Nick (one of them, not the other) still behind the counter sometimes. They recently (last 4 years) renovated the inside to update the seating and walls and such. I miss the old photos on the walls, and the new plasma TV with them cycling through just isn't the same. The roast beef sammiches are good. Large, cheese, sauce, mayo, please. Fries, chicken fingers, chicken wings, onion rings, greek salads are all consistently good. Hard to go wrong with pretty much anything here, and it's all cooked to order and yummy. The parking sucks, more-so because people don't understand how to use the small lot. Stop driving out the wrong way, idiots. No credit cards, which is a bummer, but they do have an ATM inside. read more

Best loose-meat sandwich shop in Beverly, if not the entire North Shore. I have never had a better pastrami sub or sandwich than Nick's. Carved fresh, cooked to perfection, with an excellent quality bun, it just doesn't get any better. Nick's chicken fingers are excellent. The wife and my son both love their roast beef. I do wish the parking lot was larger and easier to get into and out of. However, the Hogan Tire next door closes at 6:00 so that becomes a nice secondary lot for picking up dinner. read more

Hands down the best roast beef sandwich anywhere. Period. End of discussion. I have been going there since 1978 when it was a small building with only a few stools. One of the Nick owners was always there and insured that the sandwiches met their standards. Over the years the quality has never waivered. The beef is tender, warm and melt in your mouth delicious. I stick with the junior beef with tangy sauce but they have a super size if you are feeling really hungry. They also have plenty of other menu items to choose from so if someone in your group wants chicken fingers they have them. The other menu item that I get occasionally is the fish sandwich. I have had several sandwiches from the Revere institution and while they are very good Nick's still beats them for flavor, consistency and value. If you are anywhere in the area you have to stop in. Nick is usually there surrounded by his extended family and they treat everyone well. One thing to remember CASH only. read more

Bummer. Long time customer here but tonight really sucked. Got a Large 3 way and a large chicken kabob salad. 3 way was so good. But then bit into the salad and got some very sharp feeling grit. Said "Eh it may be an olive pit/chicken bone piece..." Went in for the next bite and a shard of glass stuck in the back of my mouth and I tasted blood immediately. Brutal. Obviously spit the rest out and threw it away. I called the restaurant and they basically told me that it was impossible that it was glass I bit into because they don't have glass in the kitchen. I told them I just wanted them to be aware that the salads could be tainted. The manager woman I spoke to was rude and basically insinuated that I was incorrect. No apology, no offer for refund. What a joke. Longtime north shore customer no longer. This place calls itself, Nick's "Famous" Roast Beef. I have a few thoughts on this before we get to the food. I see many places around that claim to be "famous" roast beef place. This place is "famous" in its name alone, I assure you that this place is basically unknown outside of the North Shore. I have been to some actual "famous" places and they rarely actually say, "famous". If something or someone where actually "famous" they wouldn't need to tell you they are. And lastly on the fame issue...just because someone puts the word "famous" in their name...even if they are actually famous, doesn't make it automatically good. Nick's is neither famous nor good enough to be worthy of being famous. They do however, expend a ton of energy on trying to convince us that they are actually famous. I do often wonder why the obsession with roast beef in Massachusetts? I mean there are roast beef places in Massachusetts like most places have Starbucks. Now lets talk about this "Phantom Gourmet" that apparently visited here and called it a "hidden gem of the North Shore". Hidden Gem AND famous all at the same time...interesting. I have been to a couple places in recent months that the Phantom Gourmet apparently liked and neither were places that actually cook anything. Clearly the Phantom Gourmet is clueless. I had driven by Nick's many times in recent months and want to stop each time but always kept driving because there is almost no parking there. I hadn't been here in many years and recall good times with good friends, late at night at Nick's, so I really wanted to revisit this place. Finally I was driving by and there was some parking so I stopped. I walked in and noted that the place is clean enough, the people seemed friendly enough but there was an absence of the smell of cooking beef. My expectation for someone being the "best" or "famous" is that they actually make the food. My guess is that they just thin slice some decent beef like Boar's Head and call it a day...but I can do that at home. I told the guy at the counter to give me what people normally get and a few minutes later I get a roast beef sandwich on a regular burger bun with a bbq style sauce, mayo and a piece of kraft cheese. This is what I would make at home if I was being lazy and didn't feel like cooking. Actually, even if I were lazy I would go better than that, so I guess I should say lazy and if its all I had in the kitchen. The French fries were plain old French fries you'd get from Sysco. As I waited for my food and while I ate I watched and listened to the orders from the other people and I noticed that there were an unusual amout of adults buying chicken fingers...chicken fingers that are clearly straight from the bag and frozen. Are we really saying this is worthy of "fame"? Are you really telling me that as a 40 year old man or woman...you still consider chicken fingers, dinner? Are you saying that your kitchen skills suck so bad that you can't heat up your own frozen food at home? All my senses tell me that Nick's doesn't actually cook anything and what they assemble is edible but not "famous" and not going to ever actually be "famous". When you make such claims there should be some reason behind it and if you claim to be famous and ask me to pay for it...I expect that you will do better than what I would do at home if I didn't feel like cooking and didn't have anything left in my kitchen and too many beers in my belly to drive to the store and to care what I eat. I'd go 2 1/2 stars but not 3 as I gave Phillipes in LA 3 stars and they are certainly better and actually cook food there. This place makes me think I should give Phillipes another star. If you are drunk, extremely hungry, have the tastebuds of an 8 year old or otherwise don't care what you eat at the moment...stop by if there is parking. read more

We met Nick, the owner, on our first visit here today - he's a Greek immigrant who's been at this for almost 4 decades, and there he is mid afternoon on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend, supervising the goings on and greeting guests. We do not hate. We like a good North Shore roast beef. We understand that Nick's was featured in Jane and Michael Stern's "Road Food" and had been named a Phantom Gourmet "Hidden Jewel." For us, though, nothing about this place distinguishes it from Kelly's or Bill & Bob's or any of the other places you can get the same food for the same price. Had to work really late one night and the Mr. found Nick's by searching for places that were still open (past 10pm). We're SO glad he did because this place is AMAZING, I love roast beef sandwiches, so I've had quite a few in my lifetime and nothing I've had tops the roast beef at Nick's. The first time we were there, we were starving, so we asked for two super roast beef plates (had the sandwiches topped with cheese and BBQ sauce per the cashier's recommendation), which come with a sandwich, onion rings, fries, and salad. The cashier was like no no no, that's way too much food! She suggested that we get one plate and a sandwich on the side, and we're glad we listened because it was a LOT of food. I appreciate that she looked out for us instead of just wanting us to spend more. I also appreciate that they cook the roast beef to the doneness that you like. Normally we order it as is, but recently I needed it to be cooked well done and they did that for me no problem. It was seriously love at first bite. We always order the same thing when we go there and it's amazing every time. It's a no frill place and parking and seating can get limited during busy times, but we've never had problems getting a spot or a table. I grew up in Massachusetts, but only was recently (in the past five years) introduced to Nick's AMAZING roast beef sandwiches. Prior to that, I was eating the fatty sandwiches they serve up at Bill and Bob's - decent, but not outstanding when you consider the wealth of Roast Beef joints in Massachusetts. Then I finally ate at Nick's...and my life has never been the same. The roast beef on the sandwich is FANTASTIC. It is nice and red, tasty, moist, and has all the fat cut off. Get it served up on bread with cheese and their special sauce, and you'll wonder how you can buy something so amazing for about $5.00. Wash it down with a Coke and some fries or onion rings - their fries come in ENORMOUS sizes (screw the cheap asses at Bill and Bobs) and the onion rings are deep fried to crispy perfection. There is nothing bad to say about "Nicks Roast Beef". I have been a customer of theirs since they opened some decades ago. I am still a great fan of Nicks. It's a family operated business with the best beef in town. My children who are all in the military visit them when they are at home. They are warmly received and always leave with gifts of thanks from Nicks! When you make the trip to Nicks no matter where you are from, you definitely return and usually with company. It's not a chain so there is no skimping of the food. From the beef to the onion rings, they are GREAT! And they invite you to send them pictures and comments.
