I'm a sucker for a good Philly Cheesesteak & I'm notorious for venturing into Philadelphia to visit all of the places that I've heard had the best Cheesesteak so I think that makes me pretty qualified on this topic. We rented a beach house for the week, in Delaware, and somehow, some way, I got it in my head that I wanted a delicious steak sandwich & began searching Yelp for the spot that had the best in town. A bunch of establishments popped up, but there was something about Nick's that caught my eye. Maybe it's because of the reviews - fairly all were good. Maybe it's bc the location isn't some brand new, shiny facility with fine dining style cheesesteaks... no, I wanted the real thing, the real experience, and after visiting 'The Real Thing' in Towson, MD and loving their cheesesteaks better than Pats, Genos, Tony Lukes and John's Roast Pork in Philly, I have come to believe that I don't have to travel that far to get my fix. A lot of customers who left reviews mentioned Nick's customer service, and while there was nothing bad about my experience, nothing wow'd me customer service wise. That's about the only bad thing I can say, bc the cheesesteak was top 5. Hell, maybe even top 3. The ribeye melted in your mouth. This spot is a staple and centrally located in Dewey Beach. They got an assortment of sandwiches from medium to large to super large which clocks in about 2 feet long. You can't go wrong with a nice cheesesteak. The chicken nuggets although probably frozen are little bit than the basic ones served other places. Fries are OK. I had a Gyro too which was decent. They could given a little more meat but it was still tasty. The cold subs are the only ones that aren't amazing. They could use a little bit better quality call cut and slice them thinner in the sandwich. You're not getting an overstuffed Italian. Nonetheless if you want one they still do the job. They make excellent cheesesteaks! It's so close to the beach, we just called ahead and wait time was about 15 minutes. Loved the ribeye meat that is all chopped up with grilled onions and melted cheese, with its soft bread roll. I added lettuce, tomato, and mayo and we must have ordered from here three or four times during my week long vacation. Can't believe I didn't take any pictures! They have other foods that we tried, like their fried clams, gyro sandwich, chicken tenders (they were out of chicken nuggets) and crispy fries. Awful experience.... Last night, my husband and I took our 2 daughters into Dewey Beach for the Family Movie night on the beach. We have 2 daughters, our oldest is Intellectually Disabled...a result of a very rare genetic disorder. We got to the beach, set up our chairs, blankets, etc when my oldest daughter says "Mom, I need to use the bathroom." I did not realize that they would eventually open the lifeguard station on Dagsworthy as a bathroom. My daughter likes to get to places early...routine and a schedule are everything for her, so when she told me she needed to use the restroom, I knew it meant heading into town to use a restroom. The first store off the beach at Dagsworthy is Nick's Philadelphia Cheese STK. My daughter and I entered a completely empty store. There was not a single paying customer in the store and this was at 7:45ish PM on Aug 12th in Dewey Beach. Everyone knows how crowded it can be in Aug in Dewey Beach. Anyways, there was not even someone at the front counter when we first walked in...so I immediately led my daughter towards the bathrooms. As we walked towards the bathroom, a man came out from the kitchen area and as we were about to enter the bathroom, he said, "the bathroom is for paying customers only." I immediately stopped walking and said, "I am so sorry...I did not bring my purse or card with me. Would you mind if my daughter just used the bathroom please?" He said, "sure, your daughter can use the bathroom." I said, "thank you very much." As we walked to the door of the bathroom...my daughter said to me, "Mom, come in with me." As an Intellectually Disabled person, my daughter knows when she needs our help...the bathroom (even at age 14) has and continues to always be one of those places. I followed her into the bathroom. Within seconds of us being in the single bathroom together (I don't even think I had a chance to lock the door yet), I heard this man screaming at the top of his lungs, "I told you your daughter could use the bathroom, not you..now get the hell out" and as he says those words, he started banging on the bathroom door loudly. At this point, I am so freaked out. My daughter looked at me and said, "Mom, let's go." I took her lead...she pulled up her pants and I opened the door. I said to this man, (who was literally barricading us into the bathroom at this point), "sir, my daughter is disabled and she asked me to help her in the bathroom." He literally said the words, "well she shouldn't be using these bathrooms then." I stood there, shocked, intimidated, scared and my only thought was...let's get the hell out of here. I walked my daughter towards the door and we left. We found a restaurant, the Starboard Claw, a few doors down. I walked in and asked the girl at the front if my daughter could use their bathroom...she said, "oh yes, of course...it is right there," pointing towards the bathrooms. We went in together, used the restroom and returned to the beach for the movie on the beach. As I sat there watching the movie, the whole interaction continued to bother me. There was a part of me who so badly wanted to walk back in his store and tell him that there was a reason his store was completely empty on a busy Aug night in Dewey and that is because he treats his customers so poorly, but I didn't. I won't stoop that low. Instead, I am using my voice and my experience to inform others with this review. If this guy does not sound like someone you would want to support, then please consider spending your money somewhere else. It/he is NOT worth it! read more

OMFG We were on the beach at Dewey and craving a cheesesteak, didn't feel like driving. Found Nicks here on Yelp. Let me preface by saying I don't eat a cheesesteak traditionally. Sooo, I ordered the Nicks special minus the marinara (add sautéed mushrooms,onions, peppers and provolone) and added lettuce, tomato, hot and sweet peppers plus ketchup and mustard. I've grown up in a family where, when I was younger, my dad would drive us to Philly for lunch for cheesesteaks and to New York for pizza. In fact, we did a day testing out of all of the cheesesteaks in Philly including Jim's, Pat's, and Geno's (there were more, but these are the top contenders). Normally when I'm that hungry, most anything tastes delicious- hunger does that to a person!! But the chicken cheese steak was SO bland that I thought maybe the cook forgot the cheese or any sauce or spice that's supposed to go on the bread. Nope. Just white flavorless glob of cheese. My father ordered my sister and I dinner from this place to go pick up. After he picked it up, he walked to the beach and my sister and I decided to sit at the picnic tables and eat before meeting back up with him. The staff was so incredibly rude to us. I went back and asked for a fork because it was not packed in our to go order. After eating, my sister went inside to wash her hands. When she came back I intended on doing the same. The employee ran from the back and told me I can't wash my hands unless I buy something else. I asked for a napkin (because AGAIN it was not in our bag) and he told me they have no napkins. DISGUSTING. First and foremost, the staff was completely rude, unprofessional and unkept. Hygiene looked like it wasn't of importance to many, if not all, of them which made the thought of them coming into contact with food nauseating. Walking in was like trying to walk on a Slip-N-Slide. The floor was completely soaked and not a caution sign in sight. It was unbelievably humid inside which made the, already lingering, smell of mold and mildew so strong. The tables outside and inside were filthy. They were sticky, heaps of trash were scattered, crumbs were everywhere, and the staff never came from behind the counter to wipe them down. The cooks never wore gloves, they re-cooked meat that had been just sitting out with flys landing all over it, they wiped sweat from their forehead then continued to handle food. The bathroom floor was just as wet as the lobby and looked like no one had taken the responsibility to clean anything. Their means of soap was a mini bottle of dish soap. The surface of the toilet seat had abrasions all over it which had developed a black coloring to them. Every year Nick's is the place I always go to first. I love the cheesesteaks and the gyros here. It's really good late night drunk food... and the onion rings are crunchy and good at this hour. But for some reason I always order the gyro. The gyro meat is always soft and not dried out like some other places, the pita bread is always soft and fluffy, and they give you a good amount of all the other veggies and sauces that go into it. The cheesesteaks are always juicy and not dry and some other cheese steaks I've had, the meats were just way too oily and the bread would be soggy on the inside and the outside of the bread would be rock hard. Five stars for the Philly cheesesteak! There is a small parking lot and we were able to find parking fairly easily. The inside is old school with plenty of seating and some outside picnic benches as well. Looks outdated, but has an old school charm Menu is straightforward and you can customize the toppings as you wish.
