I used to love nicky rotten's downtown. I praised it as the best burger in San Diego but, they closed the Downtown San Diego restaurant. I wnt to the Coronado location and had THE WORST burger. The Patty Melt. One of the best melts in town and worth the drive over the bridge. Thanks to the restaurant going corporate they have changed their menu and no longer carry it. It is against their CORPORATE policy to make them even if a customer requests one. No more family owned menu.. instead you get a corporate menu like Chili's or Islands. Until they bring back the patty melt, I will no longer go to this joint. I ordered a burger. Good flavor but came out lukewarm. I also "upgraded" my fries (at a cost of $3) to get the garlic fries. They barely came with any fries and half a jar of garlic. I have been going to Nicky's for a while (loved the downtown site). The quality used to be phenomenal but is no longer there. This is the spot! On Sunday's it's one of the best places to go watch a game on Coronado. They have several screens to watch all games. The servers are always really friendly. Decent Beer List and tasty inventive burgers. Service can be hit or miss throughout the night. Our server once revisited our table after simply a 5 min span when we had full beers, then we didn't see her until 30 min later when our beers were empty for more than 15 mins. Ok whatever. The massive HD projector screen is nice if there's a game you need to watch. Though whatever you do, for the love of god DO NOT get the Garlic Fries on the side! They charge you $2 more simply to dump a huge mound of nasty minced garlic from a brine jar on top of your fries. It totally kills the texture and taste from normal fries in the first place and why someone would think this is remotely edible is beyond me. We went to the Coronado location to grab some lunch on a Friday afternoon. The food was excellent (I had the Bruschetta Burger and my husband had the steak sandwich). The only point that I find to be a bit on the "what the heck is going on" situation is that all over the bar it clearly said: Friday is Military Day and you will get 15% off of your bill. Cool! My husband was in uniform as well as half of the bar there yet after they already ran our card we saw that the discount was not applied. Perhaps it is our mistake for not prompting for the daily discount but one would think that someone in a military uniform would perhaps have it automatically applied. Alas, good food. TLDR on bottom of post. Here's my review of Nicky Rottens, I hope you all enjoy =) Nicky Rottens, a sports bar with a mobster theme. That's so freaking cool. I totally dig the whole wood and black leather design, set against the pin strip wall paper. And I have to say, they probably have one of the best spots on Coronado. They are located right across Centennial Park and have an open view of the downtown skyline. So if you happen to have a nice SLR camera with you, just walk across the street and take some awesome pictures. Parking here can be, 'hit or miss' but that's just the way parking is on Coronado. The wait time was not bad either. I got here at about 8:00 p.m. and only waited three minutes for a table for two. As my buddy and I were getting seated, I noticed that there was a live music act getting all set up. So bonus points for having local musicians play here. And now for the important stuff, the food. Appetizer will run about $8, hot dogs will run about $9 and burgers will cost about $10. For appetizer, I had the 'La Cosa Nostra' Buffalo Wings with a spiked ranch style. And it was pretty tasty. They came out piping hot, so hot in fact that as soon as i took a bite, all the hot steam was coming out of the wing. I kind of looked like a Kirby sucking in as much air as i can just to counter the steam. But I just took this as a sign to order a beer while i wait for my wings to cool off. And now for the burger. I ended up ordering the Rottens Breakfast Burger. Which has one egg over-easy, crispy potato cake, cheddar cheese, apple-wood smoked bacon and their special sauce. And dang, that was a tasty burger! After taking my first bite into it, I could see all the juices dripping out of the burger. Also I can't forget about the egg that was oozing out yellow awesomeness. At this point, I'm already in my happy place. But, how can you make this burger even better? BACON! Seriously, there has to be some scientific fact that states, bacon will make any meal better. But adding bacon to this burger puts it over the top. This is a great burger for anyone who loves breakfast, has a hangover or is recovering from some kind of medicinal herbs. Also all burgers come with an order of fries, but you can substitute the fries for onion rings, fried zucchini slices, tater tots, garlic fries, sweet potato fries, or a salad for a couple extra dollars. And I have to admit the service we had was pretty good. Our waitress was really cool, she was very attentive and patient with us and she also had a little sass to her. Sass in a good way, because we would always have some type of banter going on every time she would check in at our table. Oh and she made sure our drinks were always topped off. Nothing ruins a meal faster than having nothing to drink and dying of thirst. so bonus points for keeping my drink full. So overall it was a good experience. We've always been a fan of Nicky Rottens... We sure do miss their original location in the Gaslamp which is no longer there anymore (location is now occupied by a restaurant/bar called "1919" which is not at all affiliated with Nicky Rottens). We often patronize their location in Rancho San Diego. The Coronado location is nice, in fact it definitely has the BEST view of the two remaining burger eateries. Their outdoor sidewalk patio looks out directly across the harbor to the stunning downtown San Diego skyline. Their bar and dining area is expansive and the space is very accommodating. The signature burgers are still there! Our latest visit however experienced a short pour on the alcohol of my wife's cocktail. There's no way her drink had the standard 1.5 ounces of a measured spirit jig. Our table was in the slower dining section furthest from the bar and closest to 1st Street and our server rarely checked on us to see if we needed anything. We ordered their spicy jalapeño burger, and upgraded the usual fries for fried zucchini. It was served hot, fresh, and the side of zucchini was sufficient for the two of us to split the entree. I had an iced tea and it was "brewed" versus mixed with iced tea flavoring from bar's soda gun. Overall, no complaints, the price was reasonable... Here is the difficulty in this decision: There are 3 burger places on the same block! If you are just visiting Coronado briefly.. I would probably go to the Coronado Brewing company since its a truly Coronado experience with microbrewed beer. That being said, Firehouse and Nicky Rottens are also very good restaurants. We've been here for three hours and the first hour was just waiting to order for drinks, like water and mimosas. The second hour was waiting for our food, and the third was waiting for the bill. I'm embarrassed to say the garlic fries were soggy even though it has so many reviews on yelp. Maybe our batch just wasn't done right? Our waiter didn't know the menu thoroughly and explained he was new. Understandable but I stared at the menu while waiting for a good menu so I knew it better somehow. And the mimosas were weak. I can't believe how busy this place gets on a Friday night. We had a couple of burgers - the jalapeno veggie burger for me, and the turkey burger for him. Portions were huge. Parking is nonexistent here... there is either the filled street parking, the resident-reserved alley spaces, or a long walk up from the Ferry Landing parking lot, which also gets busy and full. I don't know how Coronado could have approved such a large establishment at this intersection where no parking is available. I visited this Nicky Rotten's on a nice Friday afternoon around 5 p.m. (happy hour drink prices) for an early dinner. At first we were told at the door that all seats were taken and we could be put on a waiting list. What? Apparently they only had the lower bar area open, but there were plenty of empty tables upstairs and towards the front. So we asked if we could sit at the bar and order off the main menu. So that's what we did: sat at the bar and ordered. That wasn't easy because the lighting is low and kind of yellow-orangish, which made it real difficult to read the menu. And it was VERY NOISY, almost a roar of noise, which meant that people had to lean towards someone's ear to speak to them. This noise continued the whole time we were there and really made it stressful. The food was just meh... but I do recommend getting the sweet potato fries when you're given the choice. The hot pastrami sandwich was just so-so, as was one of the burgers. Drinks were cold and okay... and the servers seemed nice. The lighting was so dim that I had to ask my dining partner (speaking loudly in his ear) if he could read the check total for me. I was ready to get out of here and take the long walk back to our car. I can't imagine how far away someone would have to park if all the restaurant/bar levels were open. Taxi? I just can't recommend this place when there are more relaxing restaurants and bars elsewhere in Coronado. And unless you lean towards the street, there isn't a view of the bay like the Ferry Landing restaurants have. The first night we tried to go there to grab a bite they had closed the kitchen before 9 pm. That would normally be a huge strike against a place like this, but we decided to try it again the following day for happy hour. We had sweet chili wings, hot wings, garlic-style tater tots, and fried zucchini slices for starters. The zucchini was a little underwhelming, but everything else was up to par. We saw an older lady a few tables over who got "Da Ultimate Burga Challenge" burger all by HERSELF, and it piqued our interest in doing the same. However, we split the behemoth 4 ways, and we still couldn't finish the fries. I'm normally not a sucker for the "Man vs Food" type gimmicky challenges, primarily because bigger is usually code for crappy quality and taste. Although I'm sure the smaller, individual burgers are likely much tastier than the 2.5 lb monster, the big daddy was done quite well. Two of the guys we were there with said the Bacavo burger is fantastic, and I wish we had been able to go there one more time before we left town. With good food and great drink prices during happy hour, I can see how this place could very easily become a local favorite of mine if I lived in Coronado. The decor is sort of sports bar-esque, but it feels much more hip than your typical neighborhood Buffalo Wild Wings. The vibe is very low key and relaxed, which is my kind of place. Looking around I noticed a lot of young guys there (probably Navy??), so I'm sure it can get pretty fun and rowdy on the weekends! I went on Monday to watch the football game. Tons of TVs. Happy hour is 3p-6p Monday through Friday with $4 wells, drafts, and house wine. Appears that there are no specials on Monday, but... Tuesdays are taco days...Wednesdays are $4 beer days...Thursdays are "$5 you call it" whatever that means...Fridays are 15% off military...Saturdays are 10% burger of the day. I was impressed. I went to the new Coronado location the other day for lunch and I have to say it may be my new favorite lunch spot on the island. (With the accept ion of the absolutely frigid AC blowing on me while siting at the bar) I ordered the Bruschetta Burger with the veggie patty, since I'm a veggie goer these days, and it was so yummy! I got a side salad instead of fries and it was also delish. My plate was also neatly garnished with parsley and a dill pickle. All and all I throughly enjoyed my lunch! Nicky Rottens A night of drinking but we tried foods at both Gaslamp and Coronado. Tried the Pesto Pizza. This crust but very flavorful with good texture Had ham and eggs with hash browns. The eggs and ham were ok. Hash was too soggy or mushy-don't really know how to describe it. Pastrami sandwich. Yummy-according to my wife. It was a huge serving, enough for two meals. Had sliders and bbq chicken salad in Coronado. Both were great. I loved the buns on the sliders. Very chewy, thick and wow. Service was great at both of the restaurants. Came here on a Saturday after some paddling. We were pretty hungry by then and were hanging in the Coronado area. We originally were going to go to Coronado Brewing Company, but they had a 45 minute wait. We walked back over to Nicky Rotten's and thought, why not? FOOD & DRINKS: I was impressed by the Maui wowi burger with chicken. Although I was super hungry when I got there, I couldn't finish it since it was so big. I was also sad I couldn't take it home with me since we were staying in a hotel. Everyone else enjoyed their burgers too, but I cannot recall who had what. They did have Saturday drink specials (always nice!) and, for food, they had a burger special of the day too. Even though we didn't go to Coronado Brewing Company, we were able to enjoy their brews on tap anyway. LOCATION/AMBIANCE: There was no wait, as opposed to CBC's 45 minute wait, and it seemed like everyone probably did that carry over here. If you're further in the restaurant (further from the bar), there's a view of the water and you can also do some people watching. We watched a quincinera's photo shoot, a lot of tourists walking by, etc. It was fun. SERVICE: We had decent service. The hostesses were nice and accommodated our request to be closer to the water side for a bit of a view, since our friends aren't from So Cal and don't get to see the water quite so often. Our server was a nice guy and I hadn't any complaints. Bottom Line - It worked out much better for us and I was pleasantly surprised, given the CBC wait and the ability to get a table so quickly here. read more

On my visit to Coronado, I saw Nicky Rottens' on my way down to Hotel Del Coronado and remembered to stop by on my way back to grab some food and drink before heading back to San Diego. Wow what a great place!! I'm so glad I stopped by!! I stopped in around lunch hour (around 12:30pm or so) and stayed till about before 2pm. Ordered a burger with fries and two rounds of local brewed IPA beer. What a great experience with sports televisions surrounding the bar and dining area. My server was also on point and proactive in requesting a refill on my beer. The vibe was quite active but relaxed at the same time since it was not too busy for the lunch hour here. I'm giving it a 2 star mainly because of the quality of food. Been here 3-4 times now and same poor quality burgers. There is no taste, texture or juice to the burgers. It's just a block of tasteless bland meat. I even ordered the pastrami burger and the pastrami was just as tasteless as the patty and not very generous portions. Our service was pretty good and location and view of downtown is probably the only reason this place is open. It appears that everyone that's either tired of waiting or doesn't want to wait at Coronado Brewery comes here, including us. I came here on a week night with my boyfriend and a friend. Food - The food was excellent! We ordered the Bacavo burger, the Breakfast burger and the Dirty Sanchez burger. All were delicious!
