She jokingly scolded me, "you're late!" (Men love that btw). For dessert, I asked her if the crème broule cheesecake was fat free and she went along with it and said "the best fat free cheesecake ever!" Great teamwork by the staff! We went yesterday (Saturday) for lunch. I regret not taking pictures. Music is always too loud to sit inside so we sat in the patio. Chairs are too low, so stacked two to get a good height. Other tables saw us doing it so they started doing the same. There was a line at the register by the door so the other cashier register by the food pick up counter waived people her way. I was watching and saw this a few times. Not sure if that is the normal thing but seems inefficient. Cashiers and everyone that worked there was friendly. We got our food pretty fast but it was bad. I've been there about four times over the years. Each time I tried looking for that wow. Sad to say it's gone from bad to worse. I came here because I had been craving a really good chowder. Thought this was the place to deliver that. Boy was I wrong. Clam/Lobster chowder was way too thick, like the bottom of the unstirred pot. Paste. Like eating extra thick poi. Fish was hard, dry, overcooked!! This is a seafood place. I expected perfectly cooked fish. Worse, it was not even hot. Now I know why we got our food fast. It was probably a mistake from another order. Nasty. My husband has the grilled fish sandwich which was also dry. They should put it on a nice soft bun. A hoagie bun is not made for fish sandwiches unless it's a tuna salad sandwich. My friend's Hawaiian food was bland. Everything on that plate had no taste! The squid luau tasted like there was no coconut milk. Didn't even look it. Lau Lau and Kalua pig also bland. I always bought their cookies. This time it was super oily. Ok, buttery, but seeping butter. There is something wrong with the baking technique for this to happen. Everything was bad. I hope it gets better. I did notice the local people who were there ordered only poke bowls. Maybe that's good. If we're in the area craving for poke bowls, MAYBE we'll give it a try. We had a big party of 7 & a few of the female greeters were a tad bit on the sassy side to me giving me short, curt answers which my family visiting from Washington state noticed. I tried to make light of it but my family almost wanted to leave but everyone was hungry. The server who took care of us was great. Wish that I got her name. I ordered the daily ono fried special and calamari. Took a bite of calamari was totally overcooked, inedible. 30 seconds in hot oil with this sized calamari max, these were just way way over rubbery. Had them refire a new batch, same terrible. Got a refund for those. The Ono was way overcooked also, however as it was a bigger piece of fish compared to calamari this was edible, but disappointing. It was not super fresh, blood line intact. I don't mind the bloodline left in but when the fish is not very fresh you gotta remove it snd also is a superior product when you do also. Although I LOVE LOVE Nico's I have to share my (super personal) disappointment when I had a huge breakfast craving for their Fried Rice and the only day they don't serve it is on Sunday Brunch day! I got the fish burger because it was on diners, drive ins, and dives. It was really delicious. My mom got the crab cake burger and she said it was good. My brother got pepperoni pizza and ate every bite. We shared the brownie ala mode and you can choose which flavor ice cream. We chose double chocolate. Staff service was attentive, friendly and timely. The food was delicious. There are 4 things that I think needs prompt attention. 1. We arrived less than 5 minutes before our 5pm reservations and were told to sit in the lounge as we would be seated at 5pm. Except for the wait staff that were standing around by the bar, the restaurant was completely empty. We would be the first table. I'm in my 60's, and dined at numerous fine dining restaurants in the past, I've always been seated if arriving less than 5 minutes from my reservation time. I found this to be a slight and quite rude. 2. Bar glasses smelled like fish tank water. Very strong and unpleasant fish tank odor. I have smelled this at other restaurants and sum it up to the restaurant's dishwasher needing to be serviced, deep cleaned, etc. 3. My party wanted to omit some ingredients, like goat cheese, from a side of polenta, not due to an allergy but personal dislike. We were told this was not possible, unless it was due to an allergy. 4. Another member of my party wanted to substitute a vegetable side dish for another vegetable and was told this could not be done. We have dined at Nico's Upstairs at Pier 38 many times in the past because of the food quality, ambience, service, location, ample free parking and am fully aware of how much our tab would end up being at the of our meal. food was great, the miso butterfish and panko crusted ago was amazing!!! the only and severely bad experience i had with my family was with the bartender with the neck tattoos. she was very short with us, she did not take the time to explain what was in stock and what was out of stock. did not say which type of lagunitas ipa she had , she simply said, "the ipa, the only ipa we have". did not spend the time to explain or give us a taste of what they had. mind you, lagunitas has multiple different ipas. "we have what you see" . the tap only said lagunitas, no distinction as to which one. after not tipping her because of her rude service, she approached my table after we were seated from the bar. at first i thought she was trying to be nice to say sorry but she started to argue with me in front of my guests stating that she would bring her manager over. even though i NEVER requested a manager. i told her that was not necessary and it's ok. she proceeded to tell me "she's going to come over here to talk to you , no matter what". i refused speaking to the manger three times and she persisted that a manger would come to my table . i went up to the bar to tell her "no need for a manger because i do not want to embarrass my elders that were dinging with me" and she said "no, she's definitely going to talk to you". i went up to the front desk to avoid confrontation to ask for the manager hoping to intercept the manager so that my guests would not be embarrassed or have any conflict. while walking to the front desk to intercept the manager, the bartender with the neck tattoos started to point and laugh at me so loudly that my guests asked why she did so. i asked the manager to please let us know if we would be able to have a night without conflict and just want a safe night. i told her if there would be a conflict, to please allow us to leave. the manager stated that she would ask the bartender what happened and that she would talk to her. thee was no reconciliation or any comfort that it would be a trouble free night. we proceeded to dine there hoping that there would be no confrontation. will never come back again if the bartender with the neck tattoos is here. very embarrassing and uncomfortable experience, which was not worth the amazing food. i think her name was "chaira" or "jaira" per the wait staff read more

Bodies and tentacles that were fried to perfection. My surprise of the day was the Fishermen's stew in a bread bowl! For $10 you get a bread bowl that fits and fills a mini size takeout container and overflowing with a delicious chowder like stew!!! If you just get this it will fill and warm your tummy! I would definitely get those 2 items again. The Double fish burger, get this if you want something really healthy! I'm not sure how they prepare the fish but it is like a fish patty! It was very dilly. If you are not into dill, I would avoid this. When I think of Diners, Drive-ins and Dives I think of fried fish and it was my fault for not looking for a picture. We went here last night for a family friend get together. It's been on our list for years, but somehow we just haven't gotten to try it until now. This place is located on Pier 38, with multiple parking lots to choose from. We got there ahead of our whole group, so we walked around and hung out for a bit. They won't seat you until your whole party is present. While you're waiting, you'll want to check out their blackboard outside with the catch of the day options. Once we were all together, we were seated quickly, and had quick attentive service. Our food came out quickly as well. My fiance ordered the fish n chips, while I ordered the seared furikake ahi. The rest of the table ordered the pesto chicken salad, poke nachos, and the arare crusted salmon. All are the perfect size. Not too much, but enough to make you full. The Ahi was cooked medium rare, and had lots of flavor! Served over a bed of brown rice, with some garlic carrots and green beans. It comes with a tartar sauce, but honestly, you don't need it. I thought that the ahi was flavorful, fresh, and delicious, but i really liked the veggies! I cleaned my whole plate. The Fish n Chips were good as well! The fish was nice and flakey, breaded just right. The chips were fresh and crispy, not soggy. I was amazed at how busy it was the whole time we were there, including the bar! This was impressive to me considering that they do not accept reservations. It was still super busy when we left as well! I know they have Pupu Hour, and live music! This restaurant was recommended to me by a coworker that is native to Oahu. This spot is highly regarded as one of the best seafood restaurants on the island and it did not disappoint. They do not take reservations and it is always busy, so plan on a short wait when you arrive. It took my party about 15 minutes to be seated. They have indoor and outdoor seating available, and if you are in a larger party, you will probably get the outdoor seating. They have a standard menu, but they also have daily specials handwritten on a blackboard outside of the front entrance. Live music seems to be a regular thing there and that just helps make the atmosphere even better. The seafood is fresh and very well seasoned. One more restaurant checked off of my bucket list before leaving the island, and I must say, I wish I had come here sooner. Finally decided to eat here for lunch yesterday and I absolutely loved our experience. The woman taking our order was so helpful and friendly, which made all the difference. My dad is a super picky eater, so she suggested a few items that most picky eaters typically order. We ended up ordering the double cheeseburger with fries, Hawaiian plate, shrimp tempura appetizer, and furikake ahi. Luckily the restaurant wasn't too crowded, so we were able to get a table by the bar area after ordering. It didn't take long as long as I thought it would for our food to be ready, so I was very happy about that--ya girl was hangry. The Hawaiian plate was absolutely delicious, maybe the best one I've had in a while. I didn't try the furikake ahi or the double cheeseburger, but I heard they were both good. The fries on the other hand weren't the best--not fresh or made to order. I read about this on several reviews, so my expectations weren't high...oh well...future fry consumers beware. The shrimp tempura was also just mediocre, according to the fam. I think my favorite part of my dining experience was the ambiance. I'm normally not super into live music at restaurants, but I loved the musicians who were playing yesterday afternoon. The music really made our whole experience fun and enjoyable. I will definitely be returning and would highly recommend to anyone who has been hesitant about visiting, like I was. Right in the middle of the restaurant is a huge bar with very affordable drinks! Right next to it is a band that plays music and honestly, this is what completed the ultimate vibe of the restaurant. The process of this restaurant is that there are no waiters that serve you. You choose a seat and order/pick up your food at the counter. I ordered the combo lunch plate with Hoisin BBQ Chicken and Braised Pork Belly with a side of Rice and Mac Salad. All of this was delicious, but the braised pork belly had to be my favorite. Even if the sauce they dashed on top of the pork was not a lot, the taste and texture were still one of the best flavors I've had. From the bar, I ordered the Kilauea Lava Flow which was so aesthetically pleasing to look at. The drink was very sweet that I could not even taste the alcohol.
