Here's the scoop: NIGHTINGALE BREADS is OPEN Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. It is CLOSED Sunday, Monday & Tuesday and that is because it is a run by one person and a very small staff. It is an honest-to-goodness little bakery where everything is done by hand. While I personally wish Beth was open all the time for my convenience, I completely understand that she's not a seven-day-a-week grocery store that churns it out....and her product shows it. I have been going to this bakery (or should I say "trying" to go to this bakery) since they opened their doors... which isn't very often... because the doors are rarely open. The bread is five star, the reason that I keep trying to go. Customer service is iffy... Beth is pleasant and helpful, but many of the young girls that she has working at the counter do not ever smile, nor do they say "thank you" for your purchase. The bakery is closed more than it is open, and if I happen to stop in at the end of the day when they are open, they are more often than not completely sold out. Really frustrating because the bread is outstanding. I wish the bakery were open more, and that the customer service was better. AMAZING BUHRED (bread)!!!!! Their loafs are amazing and this is what I call true bread. VERY SMALL STORE (ran by 1 lady). It is hands down the best bakery in sonoma county. All of the breads are excellent. My only knock against them is whenever we walk in they always look up from their work like we are bothering them. They obviously love making making bread, maybe just not selling it. read more

To those who have complained about the store not being open or the bread running out: just call ahead. They are happy to hold a loaf for you, and you can place orders several days in advance. It's easy to get what you want. And imagine if you were running your own bread bakery. You have to make the bread dough the day before you sell it, which means you'd never get any time off if you were open more days per week. Hiring someone else to make your bread, when you are the expert with true gifts, doesn't work. Believe me, customers want the bread SHE makes. You know from these reviews that the bread is to die for. The owner buys the finest organic ingredients and local products and has years of bread-baking experience that she finally allowed herself to put to great use. After years of being a nurse (origin of the bakery's name: heroine = Florence), she saved enough money to start her own bakery. All the personal touches that accompany a woman owning her own dream-come-true business shine through here, in every aspect of this wonderful world of its own. As a Forestville resident, I don't know how I lived before this bakery came to town. I wait for Wednesdays when the new week starts with fresh sourdough. I take a walk to town on Saturdays so I can carry home a warm loaf that just came out of the brick oven at 2:00. Whenever I bring Nightingale breads to a party potluck, they are inhaled almost instantaneously; I never get to bring home any leftovers, even if several people brought bread to the party. Beth, the owner, also does seasonal baking, so she makes special Rosemary Potato dinner rolls at Thanksgiving time, which you must order in advance. She makes a yummy pumpkin bread around Thanksgiving, and this year she made a cranberry orange loaf in the late fall. When fresh figs were in season, she made goat cheese fig foccacia that was out of this world. For some reason we just learned about this place. But, we tried it last week, & bought the sliced seeded French bread, a loaf of the Eppi, & a sour dough loaf. All were exceptional. And today we will try the cinnamon raisin, with plans to get a loaf of their rye bread tomorrow. So far all of the breads have just been perfect. We only live about 15 minutes from there so we are very lucky! Just love this place! read more

Got the sexiest baguette ever here. It was still warm, crusty on the outside and soft on the inside. One bite and we bought 5 loaves of bread! The seeded rye was also delicious, which is a first, since I'm not a fan of rye. Definitely worth going out of the way for. read more

Fellow food lovers, Nightengale is a rare find! I bought a loaf of their sliced, seeded sourdough, which is so good it blew my mind! I am used to San Francisco sourdough, so I know a good sour bread when I taste one. The rosemary foccachia is excellent and I'm on my 3rd loaf of that. The rye is a keeper. I haven't had any of their bread that is not far above average. And so pure! Only the best ingredients. Get on board while the getting is good friends. Bon appetite! read more

This place is absolutely fantastic! Finally, Forestville has a business worth frequenting! I think we've tried everything they have to offer, which includes the crusty goodness of the Forestville French and a killer Rosemary Focaccia. Though their hours are limited and their breads are pricey, it is worth it! They also do a late-bake, which I think comes out around 3. Update: I have been back a few times since this, and they still rock my world! I purchased the Cinnamon bread ($6.50, Thursdays), and it was amazing! Nightingale Breads is worth the wait (the wait of finally figuring out when they are open!) But like other posters have said.....this is a small artisan bakery and in our super paced connected world if we can see past the limited hours, Nightingale offers the gift of amazing breads and a step in to the slow lane for a minute! Came for the Saturday specials: Wouldn't get the cinnamon roll again. Just tasted like yeasted dough with walnuts and raisins in the middle. Would get the moonlight spent bread again. Made from the leftover barley used for beer. It had this fermented flavor, I've never quite tasted before. Also the crust doesn't tear the roof off your mouth. Instead, it's perfectly, simultaneously crispy and chewy. Roll in when it opens at 10am, and the breads are still warm. read more

This place is amazing! The bread is absolutely the best in the county. The French baguette is crunchy outside, chewy inside, and perfect taste. I can not stop eating it. While it's not a sit down bakery it is 100% worth it to get all your bakes goods here and take it home or to a park. read more

The BEST bread bakery around. Beth does an amazing job and every loaf is amazing. If you buy a warm baguette the challange is getting it home before ripping into it. The sliced sourdough is the only sandwich bread I buy now. If you're lucky enough to be there when she has one of her special "seasonal" breads available make sure to grab one......or 4. They are that good. The only problem is that since she opened my truck is full of crumbs - lol. The bakery is open Wed - Sat. with a late bake in the afternoons. Absolutely the best bread I have had. I love bringing it to dinner parties (any loaf, any kind of people). We have purchased loaves to take to dinner the next day and have finished off the loaf before we got home (about 5 minutes away). The prices are reasonable and Beth and the others who work there very nice. As others have said, the hours are shorter than I would like but if they were longer my diet would consist of only her bread! Seriously, tell more people about this bakery and then Beth will profit and perhaps be able to have longer hours. She even makes fantastic Challah around the Jewish New Year. read more

This is a fanTAStic bakery - I especially love the rosemary focacia and can eat a loaf in a heartbeat, and in that sense, it is dangerous. The multigrain bread makes great toast and sandwiches, and their bagette is really popular. It was started by a nurse, and has wonderful staff, so you know they have good health standards. The best bread in the west! She also makes points by donating bread to the AIDS food bank what is left at the end of the day. read more

I love everything I have ever bought here and feel better because the flour is organic. I bought the tail end of the cinnamon rolls yesterday as a breakfast treat for my family. I had to taste them to be sure they would be ok. . I'm telling you.... buttery, just the right amount of nuts and cinnamon rolled in everywhere! We all agree that these are some of the best cinnamon rolls we have ever have.... possibly the best! read more

They use a brick oven which produces a delicious variety of baked breads. Got there a few minutes before opening and there was already a line. We got the cinnamon roll which was full of flavor with raisins and walnuts. It was completely eaten less than 10feet from the bakery. Also got a hearty spelt bread which was so aromatic with the best softness inside and light outer crust. They have over a dozen varieties of bread with a few sweet choices too. Fantastic FRESH Bread. For those who complain about short hours or running out of bread.....you could go to a chain store....they are always open. What makes Nightengale Breads so special is that it is FRESH bread! and Beth makes every loaf. She is up late working in the bakery....making sure the fire is "just right" for baking, rolling baquettes, and making this mix. Wow. I've been looking for a good baguette after a trip to France earlier this year left me with a serious hole in my life due to a lack of good baguettes here. This place is as good as I've been able to find. The baguette is light, airy, and springing in the middle. The crust is brown and crunchy. Awesome!!! read more

The best bread I've had in years! I ordered the wheat bread round, made with 100% whole wheat products. It was so wonderful and moist. Honestly, since I was in Ireland last and had Irish Brown Bread I have not tasted bread so good! Very nice woman who helped me. It has a touch of rye which I didn't think I'd like but she told me she felt the same way about rye. But, I loved it....the pinch of rye set it off in a great way! read more

The rosemary focaccia here is so amazingly delicious, I usually can't wait until I get home to start eating it. It's wonderful for sandwiches, with soups and stews, and of course, just by itself.
