I really, really like this place...but I want to love it! After at least 6 visits for snacks, dinner or brunch something seems lacking. Never in service that is always great! But most dishes come across 4/5 fully conceived. Flat seasoning or a tough thin biscuit at brunch. Just because you have heard of a dish i.e. Biscuits and Gravy doesn't mean you can pull it off. First walking in, I was impressed by the decor and set up, but they shoved us into this booth where we couldn't hear a thing, and we were completely cut off to the rest of the restaurant (and the bathroom!). We started ordering family style, small plates. Everything was over-seasoned, too salty, over priced for the amount of food ordered. About 8 pieces of extremely salty broccoli was around 12 dollars..... We got the artichokes and the three of us probably got two small fork fulls. Overall, we left hungry with a gaping hole in our wallets, and went to taco bell after. If you're looking for a similarly promised experience, hit up Spill the Wine instead and get your money's worth. read more

Bunch was terrific, delicious and sophisticated with the addition of a live vinyl dj. I had the pulled pork with masa cakes, flawless. My bloody mary was a little smokey because of the house smoked peppers in the mix. Definitely a return visit is in the offing, I'll go until they try to change. read more

I don't like posting negative reviews but I just had to speak out. I went here for a birthday dinner with my boyfriend's family. We split everything on the "plates" part of the menu and had a few of the bruscettas as well. 75% of the items were unbearably salty. I enjoy salty food. I crave it often. But this amount of salt just distracted from the flavor of the seafood/meat/veggies so much that the ingredients did not shine. I will probably try this place again (ESPECIALLY FOR THE SCALLOPS) and see if I just came on an "off" night. Drink menu looked awesome and the menu overall is great. The service was wonderful as well. She checked in often and acted very friendly and casual. I'll post another review on my next visit, which I hope will be a better experience. read more

I read the menu. I read the reviews. I looked at the photos posted here. I booked marked it. Nightingale - I must go there. And I did. On the last Fringe weekend. While it was good, it was not nearly as fantastic as I expected based on said menu descriptions, reviews and photos. We ordered the scallops to start. The flavor was superb. You could taste the scallops themselves and the light gazpacho only added a little extra oomph. We also had Dry Aged Hanger, which came with garlic spinach, fries, beef fat aioli. Ok their fries ARE good. I'm not sure they are as good as the ones from The Happy Gnome, but they were up there delish. The steak was cooked correctly (medium rare) with the exception of the two end pieces. But the overall flavor was very meh. The steak itself was meh, and the flavorings/seasonings were also meh. The steaks I make at home when I just throw it on the stove to sear without seasonings are much more flavorful. The garlic spinach was exactly as you'd expect - garlicky spinach. That was good and helped with the less-than-flavorful steak. The atmosphere - we sat out on the patio and they did a nice job of trying to divide the busy Lyndale from the restaurant with planters. The service - phenomenal. There was always someone refilling my water - almost to the point of too much, but who is going to complain about that?! Waiters were constantly checking on the patio tables, there was never a moment where we had to ask for something - someone was always already there, ready to serve. I will be going back. I'd like to check out the atmosphere inside, and there were a few cocktails on the menu that need tasting. I will also be sampling some of the other small plates because one meh dinner is not enough to judge a restaurant when it boasts a menu like Nightingale's. read more

While the happy hour here is AMAZING, I'm not sure it would be the right place to go for date-night dinner. I've been several times since it opened, some for dinner and some just for drinks & "nosh." During the dinner hour, I've found the staff to be slow (even without a full dining room) - and small plates can hit the spot, but I find the portion sizes here to be inconsistent. HOWEVER, it is a GREAT place to meet up with friends before or after dinner - the booths are a dream, the specials are always good, and there's $3 Hamm's on tap (for the less adventurous type). The atmosphere is low-key but still buzzing - think Icehouse (over on Nicollet). Always good music on. Last time I was there the lights were a little bright for 10:30pm, but usually they are adjusted appropriately. If you need a place to meet friends where you can get a table right away, have a few drinks and an audible conversation, head to Nightingale. If you need dinner, grab a burger at the Bulldog next door and then head to Nightingale for drinks. read more

This was my fourth time coming here and each time the service keeps getting worse. I made reservations for a party of 6. We ordered food and it came out 50 minutes later and not all at once (one friend waited an hour for hers). Our bottomless mimosas weren't refilled. Our server hardly checked on us and never updated us about our food taking so long - we ended up asking a different server why it was such a long wait when the restaurant wasn't busy. The host came and told us that we had to give our table up for another party. I totally understand this, but if we had to wait almost an hour for our food,it would make sense and be reasonable that we'd stay longer to enjoy our drinks and food especially since it came out so late. The host also pointed out our table to the party waiting for their seats causing a very rude and awkward confrontation from the other party. Overall, the food was great, but not worth waiting an hour for. Service was horrible. Will not be returning and neither will my friends. read more

A Nightingale burger, cocktail, and oysters at happy hour is basically the closest thing we have to church. Literally order anything, and you'll be happy. Also worth noting: Nightingale has one of the best front of house programs in a city where bizarre and terrible service is the norm. Just.Go.Here! We have visited Nightengale countless times for afternoon happy hour both during the week and on weekends and it has become one of our favorite destinations. To me, it evokes a feeling of a quaint little New York restaurant and for that reason alone I love it. Today was the first time we have been to Sunday brunch. Our mixologist/waitstaff was Robert who was attentive but not "in your face". He displayed patience and was very courteous when I asked several questions about the cocktails. I settled on a "Corpse Revivor" and it proved to be an excellent choice. I highly recommend! But the star of our visit was the Eggs Benedict my husband ordered. OMG! Unlike any other! From the pork belly to the kimchi to the hollandaise and let's not forget about the potatoes. My husband said it was the best he's ever had and even I (who follows a whole food plant based diet) had to sneak a bite or two! Nightingale is my go-to restaurant. It is great for any occasion. Out of the number of times I've been at Nightingale, not once have I been even remotely underwhelmed by my meal. You can't ask for much more when the food and drinks are consistently flavorful, perfectly cooked, and beautifully presented! This place is one of my favorite date spots. It is laid back but upscale. Sometimes though it can feel a bit out of a poor hipster's price range. It has maybe a hundred different whiskeys and that is always very very important. I wish I could afford to be here more often and eat. That being said, they have a great late night happy hour 11-1, that will make the place more affordable to a broke teacher like myself. It also makes the bill a lot easier to swallow. There's a reason I'm not giving five stars to this place: The prices. Otherwise, this place is fantastic! The prices are a bit steep considering how much food one typically receives on the dish ordered. Granted, I haven't tried everything on the menu. And granted, part of what you're paying for is the very nice atmosphere - swanky but modest at the same time. You can dress casual or full formal and somehow either works here. The bar is somewhat separated from the dining area and has a great selection with normal prices. On both sides, the staff are very polite, attentive and not pushy at all. The food is delicious! But it's the food side that is lacking. Too many times I've left here feeling like I could eat a little more after paying quite a bit. But as I've just indicated, I keep coming back... read more

Chicken liver was flat and the thick bread was not paired well with it. Very busy for a Thursday night. Wine list is very interesting and refreshing. I was in the neighborhood for a book launch at Once Upon A Crime. I had some time to kill so I had a light dinner. It was that bitter cold day and I didn't even want to cross the street, so this handy place around the corner fit the bill. The whole staff is awesome. Anya is a very laid back server, and is always there for you. I got the market salad. They put on plenty of blue cheese, kind of in dollops. I didn't care for the hazelnuts. I got a healthy version of calamari, not fried. The couple next to me got the oysters in the shell. Not a fan, but they sure looked pretty. I left, but I was still early for the event, so I came back and was forced to have a dessert. I sat in the exact same spot. Only 3 things to choose from. I got the cheesecake because I love chevre cheese, that tends to cut sweetness. I deliberately took my time, that was so delicious I could have downed it in 2 bites. They finally got some decent jazz music after being tortured with old soul. I love it, but not here. From where I sat I had a perfect view of the TV, of the Brady Bunch on vacation in Hawaii. I wanted to like this place. It's gotten good reviews. Walk in and love the ambiance and look of the place. Peeped the menu and it looked legit. But man was I disappointed. Let me explain. We started with the platter of sides as an appetizer; this came with chick pea fritters, wasabi snap peas, and grilled zucchini in some sauce. 1/3 of these items were actually worth it. The chick pea fritter was meh. The wasabi peas didn't taste like anything; the ginger on top of them was waaaayyyy better than the actual peas. The zucchini with whatever sauce it is in was solid though. Next, I ordered the dry aged hanger steak with chimichurri sauce and my friend ordered the poached halibut. It took them 50 minutes to get these joints out to us. That's a bit ridiculous I'd say. Now if they were amazing and we were blown away it would be worth the wait. But they were whatever. And they were both almost $30! I've had similar quality and quantity of steak for $18; honestly nothing special about this one. And having to wait almost an hour for a mediocre, overpriced dish is mildly infuriating. We waited so long the restaurant took the app off our bill. All in all pretty poor experience and given the wait and price for what I got in return I can't give it more than 2 stars. read more

We were excited to come for brunch and made a reservation at 10:15 so on the earlier side. When we got there we were immediately told that the table was only ours for 90 minutes because they had lots of reservations and we could not linger. We had no intention to linger, there were five empty tables around us the entire hour and 15 minutes we were there and when we left there were still many empty tables. I was really excited when Nightingale opened only a couple of blocks from me. Unfortunately I'm not quite sure if it's even worth a two-block walk. The problem with this restaurant is how inconsistent and forgettable the dishes are. I've been there a few times for happy hour out of convenience and have tried several of their small plates and appetizers and I'm still not quite sure if I would recommend it to anyone. Some of the dishes that I enjoyed are the steak tartare, the roasted mushroom bruschetta, and the Brussels sprouts. The bruschetta was topped with mushrooms, goat cheese and sunny side up eggs. Though not particularly large, the flavor was pretty good and it had a nice textural balance. Otherwise it was nothing to write home about. The Brussels sprouts would probably make a nice side for some of the larger dishes; I had them simply because I love Brussels sprouts (plus they are prepared with bacon....and seriously...who doesn't love bacon?!). The only issue with these is that they're a bit on the sweet side. They would probably be perfect to share with someone, since the size of the dish is actually pretty large. The steak tartare was my favorite. It had a beautiful texture and was served with a perfectly proportioned number of crostini. It was creamy, tangy, and full of flavor. The bartender mentioned to me that people come back just for that dish. I agree..... .....although unfortunately for him, the bartending is one reason I wouldn't come back. I ordered one of their cocktails, and took note of the drinks other people were having as well. My drink was -at most- 4oz served in the tiniest glass I've ever seen and was obscenely overpriced. When I commented on the size of the drink the bartender tried to convince me it was 6oz. After I just started at him, he finally admitted maybe it was less than that and blamed it on the glass. The glass? Really? I'd stick to their decent beer selection if you go there for a drink. I've also tried the crab chorizo and leak bruschetta, and I'm still not sure where any of those ingredients were. It looked like cat food and tasted like the inside of a hot pocket...mushy, one dimensional, and texturally unappetizing. The fries are only worth the price at happy hour, and are nothing special. Overall there is some decent food here. Unfortunately, they get lost among some other unappetizing and overpriced options, and really aren't all that memorable to begin with. read more

This may have been the best meal I've had in Minneapolis to date. We started with the deviled eggs and a couple of sidecars.. The eggs were simply sublime. The quality of the eggs and the caviar was evident. Moved on to the wings and the mushroom flatbread. The wings were meaty and moist, with a great ginger,lemongrass and spicy sauce on them that had heat, but weren't overly spicy. The flatbread was crisp and simply. Wonderful mushrooms on top of a great bread. We then had the special tacos, duck confit which were divine. They were beyond decadent. The mussels followed - and they were the highlight of the evening. The mussels were simply the best I've had in Minnesota. The roasted tomato broth was something that if I'd been in the privacy of my home, I'd have drunk straight out of the bowl. Nightingale also offers a brunch which I can't wait to try as I've heard they have the best bloody marys in the cities. I came here with a friend and didn't know what Nightingale really provided. The drinks I ordered was amazing, light and fruity like I like, called Blue Forest (or something?). My friend and I shared an appetizer of fries and we both quite enjoyed them and the special sauce it's served with. Our server was delightful and very friendly. We always had full water glasses too.
