A time was had at the soft opening for Du Nord Cocktail Room, as a +1. #teamplusone From the customer service, ambiance, yummy food & the hand crafted Du Nord cocktails , everything was chefs kiss. The ambiance & food scream NOLA, which is my favorite domestic city, with their charbroiled oysters, poboys, and my new fav, the watermelon salad. Conveniently located in the Coliseum Building (for OG South Siders, the old Dennys, but w/the door facing the lot), on East Lake Street & 27th street, adjacent to Aldi's, Wendy's & directly across from Auto Zone. #dunordcocktailroom #yelpmpls

We stopped by the cocktail room before a dinner reservation at Lagniappe (same building and owners). We were greeted right away, sat at the bar, and immediately loved the ambiance--the low lights, neon signs, rich colors, and live plants. I had the Apple Affair that was perfectly sweet and tasted like Fall. The bartender happily whipped up a tasty old fashioned for my partner as well. I appreciated that we were able to take our drinks to our dinner reservation as well.

    MPLS strong!

The space itself isn't terribly large, and it looked like there were only three or four people working that evening. After being seated, it took a while before we were able to order our first round of drinks. Normally I don't focus much on service in reviews, but we could immediately tell our waitress was not having a great night. We were forgotten about a few times, but eventually managed to order some small bites, including a charcuterie board and some pretty yummy cheese curds. When we finally caught her for our second round, I complimented her glasses since they were similar to mine, partially in an attempt to cheer her up. I was met with a glare and a mumbled "thanks." When she walked away, all four of us kind of looked at each other like... dang, we're not sure what we did. Having all worked in service ourselves, we try to be respectful, stack our dishes, wipe up after ourselves, and generally make things easier where we can. Oddly enough, when it came time to pay, she returned with a completely different attitude... suddenly cheerful, friendly, and telling us to have a great night. Honestly, the whole interaction was a little bizarre! Service aside, the cocktails were balanced and genuinely good, the food was slightly elevated and hit the spot, and the atmosphere was great, especially with the DJ playing that night. We decided to Uber since we knew we'd be drinking, so I can't speak firsthand to parking, although it looked like street parking could be moderately difficult depending on the night. I'd still go back if I were in the area and the night warranted it. My guess is we caught them on an off night or they ended up busier than anticipated.

For beverages, they have cocktails, mocktails, wine, beer, THC drinks, milkshakes, pop, lemonade, and more! There are so many options which is great! The fries are crispy! One of my friends went with the ranch fries which were good, but in my opinion it was not worth the $2 upcharge for the amount of seasoning that comes on them. I would recommend sticking with the regular fries and ordering a side of ranch as a dipping sauce instead! This is the only place that I'm aware of where you can get a vegan juicy lucy! It is very cheesy, and it's fun that there's a meatless version of a MN classic! It was messy to eat though so make sure to have a napkin nearby! I really enjoyed the atmosphere, and would go back! Relatively easy to find, though you do have to hunt a little bit, Flora Room sits behind a nondescript metal door leading down a short hallway to the entrance. Take a long moment to allow your eyes to adjust if you're coming before sunset; this space is DARK. It's also perfect. Once your "night vision" kicks in you're surrounded by a nice bar, numerous bistro-style tables and booths. Candles adorn the tables creating a nice, cozy place to settle in for drinks. Once seated in comfortable chairs at a table, we were quickly greeted and provided with menus. The cocktail selection is relatively "small" but really nicely varied. Prices seemed a tad steep but frankly, given the quality of the drinks I'd say quite worth it. I started out with the Evita, a nice flavorful gin-base cocktail topped with a nice egg white foam. Very tasty. My wife opted for the Tapaculo, with gin, mezcal, pineapple, banana and bitters over ice. Also quite good. There are also bites available from the associated restaurant I can't recall the name of mine but I can say it was delicious. Bread-like bites with a really tasty dipping sauce. To close out the visit I selected Palo, a smoked aged rum cocktail that was really nice and rich. My wife chose the Nahualito with rum, walnut, amontillado and white chocolate. All should be on your radar. Flora Room really fit the bill for a nice, intimate speakeasy-style spot to spend time. Dark and cozy. Savory cocktails and friendly service will stand out and make you want to return. I know we'll seek it out if we return to Minneapolis again. I hope so.

Fortunately, I arrived at 5:30 PM on a Saturday, which was early enough to avoid a line and a velvet rope. I don't wait in line for anything unless I'm at a pharmacy, bakery, post office, or airport. Lines at restaurants and bars strike me as pretentious or bad management, and I don't tolerate either. However, I'm old, and at my age, nothing is worth waiting for unless it's a necessity. I found a seat at the beautiful and expansive bar and looked around at the Del Prado design. The colors might be different, but Flora was reminiscent of Minari and Noma. All three add to the Twin Cities' cachet. However, I was taken aback by the attire I saw around me. People were dressed in shorts, T-shirts, and sneakers. It's friggen Saturday night Minneapolis. Have some class! Flora Room was a lovely cocktail lounge, perfect for wooing, but don't expect to strike up a conversation with any of the bartenders. At these Del Prado joints, the staff must be trained not to engage. I'm out alone and enjoy talking. Bartenders used to be part of a lounge's attraction when I grew up in NYC. They learned your name, knew what you did, and gave you a hearty welcome. That, I guess, is not part of the culture in Minneapolis. Well, at least not at the Del Prado restaurants and bars. Chef Del Prado is from Argentina, and certainly, Argentina is one of the warmest and friendliest countries in the world, so I don't get it. I now live up the block from the Flora Room. I'm a neighbor and would like to be treated like one. Neighborly and the Flora Room are distant concepts.

Sides were standard, nothing special but serving size was small in comparison to the size of the steak. Overall everything was good! Not mind blowing and our overall tab for the steak, 2 empanadas, 3 glasses of wine and 3 beers was around $230.

Today the place was packed due to the festivities, and the parking lot was transformed into a large patio with a DJ, a small bar area, and an outdoor bbq that was slinging burgers, 1/4 pound hot dogs, tots, and popcorn chicken. There was also a meat raffle going on as well. Since it was pretty hot out, we decided to get a seat inside. The seating for today was largely communal to accommodate the large crowd, and we found a seat for the three of us. I went outside to get a smash burger, 1/4 pound hotdog, and a basket of tots. The wife stayed inside with the kiddo to order some drinks. The food cooking outside took tickets ($5 a ticket) and 5 tickets were bought for the food. Not a bad deal in my book. The food took under 10 minutes to get, and the cooks were working the fryers and flattop grill like pros. The smash burger was a nice size, came with cheese and grilled onions, and was on a brioche bun. The hot dog was a nice size, and the tots were plentiful, hot, and crispy out of the outside fryer. Run of the mill condiments were also available, and serve yourself. The wife said the smash burger was better than I make, and I make a pretty damn good burger. While we were eating, I totally felt the dive bar feel, and had the feeling this was pretty much a local bar hangout. Supposedly it's been around for over 70 years (with a name change). After eating, we went outside to see if we could win some meat in the raffle but didn't get lucky. We will come back though. Evidently every 4th Wednesday they have another meat raffle at the bar. The good news is the kiddo won a huge cake on the cake walk contest! We will definitely be back. I want to try their fried dill pickle broasted chicken. Time to eat some cake!
