Went for a banquet catered by the restaurant at the adjacent hotel. The food is quite good and seasoned perfectly. Even though it was fairly standard fare of arugula salad, filet, and molten chocolate cake, it was quite good and was better than what you'd get at most large steakhouses. Looking forward to coming back and sampling some of their more adventurous dishes.
I was in La Jolla for a little birthday getaway. I searched Yelp for recommendations and Nine-Ten caught my attention. We ordered Adobada Shrimp tacos and Jamaican Jerk Pork Belly entrees. My compliments to the chef on the sauces used for both dishes. 1. The Shrimp tacos were served on a thick and soft corn tortilla that had been seared with cheese that formed a nice crunchy bed to place the Shrimp on. An avocado sauce and salsa toppings were fabulous. I have eaten hundreds of shrimp tacos in my day, these were the best I EVER ate. 2. The Pork Belly had a nice spicy kick along with black-eyed peas, sweet potato puree, and carrots. The pork was perfectly seasoned that was nice and crispy outside and tender inside. The service was quick, the staff were attentive and checked on us throughout the meal, filling water glasses without being asked or prompted to do so. The restaurant is inside a hotel, nicely decorated for Christmas in the lobby entrance. We had a nice covered patio table, with a poolside view on a sunny day. My boyfriend and I made a reservation here since we were staying at the hotel for our anniversary and it was one of our favorite experiences of the entire trip. We booked for the Mercy of the Chef prix-fixe menu as well as the wine pairing. Each dish we had was so flavorful and unique and it just kept getting better every time! Compliments to the chef, seriously haha. Also, the service was amazing and we felt really taken care of for our anniversary. Would love to return to try to rest of the menu next time. Cannot recommend enough.
Absolutely loved this restaurant! We came here since it was on the list of restaurants for Chase Sapphire Reserve on Open Table and I was honestly blown away. We shared sourdough bread, cacio e pepe, hamachi sashimi, pork belly, and scallops. This was more than enough for 2 of us and we were full even before the scallops came. Everything was absolutely delicious. We enjoyed all the dishes we got but my favorite were the hamachi sashimi (so fresh and a balanced citrus flavor!) and the cacio e pepe (really great flavor and texture). We didn't get to try dessert because we were so full but would love to next time. Service was really kind and attentive. Our server said he's worked at many high end restaurants but this one was top notch and I can totally see that from our experience with the food and service. This is a great spot to come to for a nice occasion and you can make reservations online with Open Table. Street parking only in La Jolla so make sure to buffer that in for timing.
Came here for a date night with my wife on a Sunday evening after thanksgiving and we were fortunate to have a spot available an hour after deciding where to eat. Our server was very nice and attentive so kudos to the server! The scallops were very delicious and nice hint of citrus that was great. The hamachi was my favorite with a nice savory punch from the sauce smoothened out by the hamachi. The cacio y Pepe was an excellent dish for mushroom lovers and our waiter's suggestions to get the sourdough bread to dip into the sauce was on point. The bread was some of the best bread I've had both in texture and taste. We got the pork belly as well but I'm not as big of a fan of pork belly. The pieces had more fat than I'd like but that's pork belly! Definitely would come back to try other dishes.
One of the more disappointing fine dining experiences in La Jolla. Came here for a group dinner for a meeting/talk on a weekday, so options were limited. We all started with the salad, which was by far the most uninspiring of the night. It was just chopped lettuce sprinkled with maybe some vinaigrette and called it a day. There's maybe a spinach leaf or two, but the variety of vegetables or texture or flavor is utterly lacking. For the main course I got a filet mignon, which was cooked decently. It came with mushrooms and potato slices along with a green puree that looked just like basil pesto but does not taste like it at all. It's a bit sweet, maybe with some kind of fruit, but it's not a bad contrast with the beef. Finally, the dessert was some kind of cake, it was soft and had ice cream on the side, but I think the cake is a bit too sweet for me.
First time here Came here for a bday dinner. It's inside the Grand Colonial Hotel and offers cozy intimate dining with elevated service! Plan to come by around sunset so you can either dine on the patio or come out before going to get seated. Drinks, exceptionally made. Enjoyed all of our items: -Sourdough bread -Pork Belly -Gnocchi -Cod -Veggie main -Cheese plate Everything was amazingly executed and now I see why this place has the Michelin Distinction.
The service was excellent. We were seated right away and our waiter greeted us within minutes. He took our wine order and our food order since we had planned ahead and knew what were going to order. The ambiance is ok, might be better if they dim the lights just a tad. Overall service and food were great. Hamachi is amazing and highly recommend. The duck was my favorite dish. It has a nice crust to it that was excellent. I would return again.
My husband and I have been to Nine-Ten a few times for date nights as well as with our baby. We've really enjoyed our experiences each time and really appreciated them accommodating our baby as well. The outdoor patio is beautiful during sunset hour. The food is delicious - their duck breast is perfectly cooked and the Jamaican jerk pork belly is one of our favorites.
From the moment we stepped into Nine-Ten at the Colonial Hotel, we knew we were in for a special experience. The atmosphere is relaxed, open, and inviting, making it the perfect setting for a leisurely breakfast with friends or family. Everything on the menu is farm-to-table fresh, and it truly shows in every bite. Our group of five indulged in some of the standout offerings: Eggs Benedict - Perfectly poached eggs atop prosciutto cotto and a toasted English muffin, drizzled with velvety hollandaise and accompanied by herb-roasted potatoes. A classic done to perfection. This was my breakfast. Brûléed French Toast - My daughter could not stop raving about this. Topped with macerated berries, Chantilly cream, and a luscious crème anglaise, it had a delicate, caramelized crunch that made each bite irresistible. Simply divine. Short Rib Toast - According to my wife, this was her personal favorite. Tender short rib on a toasted base, topped with onion marmalade, truffled Mornay sauce, and a perfectly fried egg, served with a petite salad. Bold flavors beautifully balanced, every element executed flawlessly. Any of these dishes alone would impress, but together they make for an unforgettable breakfast experience, thankfully everyone was willing to share. While we didn't sample the fresh breakfast pastries, made in-house daily, we can only imagine how incredible they must be. Next time! Service was attentive and seamless, making the entire meal feel effortless and enjoyable. Nine-Ten delivers excellence from start to finish, and we cannot wait to return. This is breakfast done right, one thing that annoys me is when you see this on the menu, "To help cover increasing costs & support growing minimum wage a 5% surcharge will be added to all checks." I felt like this was already priced into the cost of the items, which were worth every penny, so my comment is not about being petty, just a simple eyeroll. This cost them a star, outside this it was an enthusiastic 5-stars.
Good food but because it is upscale, the portion sizes are small and for higher prices. You do have to make reservations considering how busy they are and their small size At dinner, I tried the Parker house rolls, the potato agnolotti and the half baked chocolate cake. The Parker house rolls (5 pieces) came out warm and were so soft. They're a little sweet on top and paired perfectly with the salted butter they give. They didn't come out with our food at first and when the waiter realized, he gave them to us on the house! The potato agnolotti comes with 5 small stuffed pasta pieces. The sauce is tasty, the green onion gives it a lot of flavor. The crispy mushrooms on top are meaty and add a good texture and flavor! The half baked cake is very runny so there isn't much substance to it. But the flavor is good. For breakfast the next morning, I tried the lemon blueberry pancakes, pavlova and some of the roasted potatoes. The roasted potatoes were so-so, they kind of tasted like they were seasoned with ramen packets and were still a little tough. The pavlova was good, but the meringue itself and cream were just a little too sweet. The tart strawberry compote that comes with it was good for balance! Lastly, the lemon blueberry pancakes (3) were very good! Great texture and size, lots of blueberries and the right amount of lemon to balance it. They were very good with metered butter and syrup on top!
We had an AMAZING experience at Nine-Ten. We had a wonderful business lunch with Daisy, the Senior Catering Sales Manager, and she could not have been more gracious and welcoming. We tried the house-made Parker rolls. I could have eaten the whole basket!! We also had the hamachi sashimi and the Jamaican jerk pork belly. Highly recommend both! The sashimi was so fresh and the pork belly was full of flavor! For lunch, I had the salmon. Others in my party had the Spanish octopus. Highly recommend. At the end of the meal, we met Chef Jason. Such a nice guy. We had such a great experience and we can't wait to return! Thank you!!
My first experience with NINE-TEN Restaurant & Bar was when I had a staycation at The Grand Colonial in La Jolla. We went to the restaurant for their happy hour and had a wonderful experience. They also provide room service for the hotel so that's what we opted for the next morning. And let me tell you - their french toast was unlike no other. It felt like a first kiss you with your childhood crush. I've visited NINE-TEN a few times now but unfortunately their breakfast & brunch failed to impress. 1st visit (Happy Hour): CHARCUTERIE BOARD: - generous portion and wonderful selection of meat/cheeses SHORT RIB PANINI: - meat was tender and juicy SHISHITO PEPPERS: - deep fried and nicely salted 2nd visit (ROOM SERVICE): OMELETTE: - nothing memorable FRENCH TOAST: - We had asked for all the components to be on the side (I think nuts and whipped cream). The french toast didn't need much though. It was the most decadent french toast I've EVER had. It must have been soaked in a bath of cream and eggs as the toast tasted almost like custard. It was so creamy, heavenly, and pure bliss. Not overly sweet. Truly one of the best dishes I've eaten all year. 3rd visit (MID WEEK BREAKFAST): BENEDICT: - The benedict wasn't very good. The hollandaise sauce was lukewarm and tasted too sour. SIDE OF SAUSAGE PATTIES: - We ordered a side of sausage patties and they were terrible. It was overcooked and almost impossible to cut through. We took one bite and that was it. FRENCH TOAST: - We again asked for the toppings to be on the side so we could add to our liking. Unfortunately, the french toast tasted nothing like the room service version. It tasted dry and condensed. There was no pudding or custard-like feeling to this version. It was disappointing to say the least. The entire breakfast tasted like it was cooked by line cooks. Just amateur and without much thought. I've read such fantastic reviews about the head chef here at NINE-TEN so I must assume he didn't work that morning we visited. 4TH & FINAL VISIT (EASTER BRUNCH): I don't like doing Easter brunch as it's always a chaotic, mass produced food, kinda day. I wanted to treat my girlfriend to brunch after church and decided to give NINE-TEN another try. They had a 3 course meal for only $35pp. Plus, bottomless mimosas for $16pp. NINE-TEN was incredibly disorganized that Easter Sunday. Especially with a set menu. Our first dish didn't arrive until almost one hour after we sat down. Other patrons felt the same frustrations. We ordered: FRENCH TOAST: - This french toast had a scoop of chocolate ganache. The french toast again was dry and deflated. The ganache was fine but very sweet. AVOCADO TOAST: - The toast was burnt. The avocado spread needed more salt. We didn't eat more than two bites of this small toast. HUEVOS RANCHEROS: - Girlfriend said the huevo rancheros were good. LOBSTER BENEDICT: - The eggs were poached nicely. The hollandaise sauce was runny. I wasn't sure if the lobster was fresh or canned. my blog has more detailed review and pics We were at NINE-TEN for almost 2.5 hours at this point. The food was that slow. We weren't really hungry for dessert after the disappointing courses. Nine-Ten set the expectation so high with an amazing first experience however they've been unable to approximate the first kiss. We gave the relationship a try though with four visits. Ultimately the breakup was sad but with no hard feelings. read more

Let's get right to the point - I am STILL dreaming about their Cacio Y Pepe dish 3 months after eating here! It was THAT good! I came here for dinner during San Diego's Restaurant Week and wow what a treat. I've always been curious about this restaurant since I often stroll by it while walking through La Jolla's Prospect St and we finally made a reservation during SD Restaurant Week to try this place out. The restaurant is situated inside a hotel but it is definitely not your average hotel restaurant. With great outdoor seating options, we chose to dine during sunset and were rewarded with a beautiful view. But let's not get it twisted, the star of the show was the food. We ordered the Cacio Y Pepe, Lamb Taretare, Pork Ribs, Duck Breast and the Ribeye. They were all so good! As I said above, the Cacio Y Pepe was amazing! So creamy delicious. My only complaint was that it's served as an appetizer...GIVE ME AN ENTREE OF THIS! So good. The meats with all the entrees were cooked well and the sides that came along with them complimented the entrees perfectly. I look forward to coming back to Nine-Ten to try other dishes. But rest assure, I'm coming back for that Cacio! read more

Nine-ten was an amazing foodie experience! Compliments to the chef. Ambiance: La Jolla -- quality hotel lily pad with a bar, main dining room and small outdoor space. Classy but not "upscale." Service: Perfectly pleasant. Food: Caesar salad was splendid! True to flavor with the anchovy-white dressing and rich croutons. There was enough parm with a base of fresh spring lettuce rather than romaine. Duck was phenomenal! Perfectly cooked. Perfectly seasoned. Perfectly crusted. Wonderful flavor. Very very nice. Strawberry and coconut semifredo was exceptional. Desert menu included cheese options - very true to the French contemporary vibe. We dined at Nine-Ten for our first anniversary dinner. The food was delicious and service was amazing. Not to mention the view of La Jolla Cove from our seat on the back patio was beautiful. They really had a nice ambiance with the outdoor lighting too. My only let down was not a whole lot of fish options on the menu, although the fish choices we did get were delictable! We were able to get a same day reservation using Open Table. Highly recommend this place if you're looking for a great restaurant with fresh seafood options! read more

Nine-Ten is connected to the Grande Colonial Hotel. It has the classy upscale vibe. We came for restaurant week and sat at the bar until our table was ready. Nine-Ten is one of the few restaurants that does not limit dishes for Restaurant Week menu. What you see during the regular dinner menu is being offered on Restaurant Week menu, with a few exceptions where there are upcharges. Our meal would have been $135 but because of RW prices, it came out to be $50 per person pre-tax not including drinks. They do not offer wine pairings except for the 6 course meal for $99. Luckily we have Russ as our server who was a certified Somm and we trusted him fully on what he suggested. He provided my friend wine pairings for each of her 3 meals and I asked for one white wine to go with all 3 of my meals since I was driving. We always ask our server what they recommend or what the restaurant is best known for. Our selection was dependent on his recommendations. Grilled Octopus - I have been obsessed with octopus ever since I visited Spain and Nine-Ten definitely delivered on the octopus and was not stingy on the portions. The potato chip was extra tasty. Cacio E pepe - Spaghettini was so yummy. I could have this dish as an entrée not appetizer. Main Sea Scallops - 3 pieces from small, medium, to large with apples that tasted like pears. Smoked Maple Leaf Duck Breast - medium rare with squash. Half baked chocolate cake - Very moist and warm topped with vanilla ice cream Coconut and Mango Parfait - Refreshing with a tang of sweet and sour. RW menu is an amazing deal compared to their regular menu prices. read more

One of my favorite dining experiences! It's a classy restaurant with great options on the menu. We went for dinner and, although the food came out quite slowly, the wait was definitely worth it. The sourdough bread with butter was SO good. It was still warm and the butter was light and the perfect pairing for the bread--definitely one of the favorite things I ordered. For the main dishes, we got the Roasted Cauliflower Steak and the Smoked Liberty Farms Duck Breast. Even though vegan/vegetarian dishes can be a bit lackluster, this cauliflower dish was so flavorful! It had pine nuts, raisins, romesco sauce, and more. The duck breast was great as well and perfectly cooked. The flavor combination of duck and rhubarb was amazing. We finished with the Strawberry & Coconut Semifreddo, which was delicious. It was light, perfectly sweet, and the buttermilk ice cream was the best part. Definitely hope I can come back for brunch/lunch! read more

There are lots of tourist restaurants in La Jolla-- George's at the Cove, Eddie V's, etc-- lots of flash great vibe overly expensive and hit/miss on food. Not so with Nine Ten. One of the most consistent experiences in La Jolla. Creative chef, very good service ( for a beach town) Mark knew is stuff and I always appreciate great advice from knowledgeable servers. 4.5 stars. Came for brunch service then returned for dinner service. Brunch - nothing to write home about. Dinner service, though? Delicious Apps: hamachi and pork belly. Would get that pork belly again and again Entrees: duck breast and prime rib. The prime rib came with the most amazing mushroom side with crispy onions. Duck breast had some beautiful morels. Dessert: stone fruit napoleon and strawberry semi- freddo. Both were good and very pretty. Best bites were definitely the pork belly and the mushroom side. Wonderful sommelier. Overall We were not impressed- Steak was salty. Scallops were okay. Desert was good. When I left 3/4 of the steak uneaten, server didn't even bother to ask why?!!! Our assigned servers service was not that great, but the other folks who was helping was good. There was no warm welcome nor friendliness with the group. I will not return to nine-ten to dine again. I was a guest at the Colonial Hotel and they do have friendliness and great services throughout their staff. I hope nine -ten staff can learn from them. read more
