The platinum haired gentleman actually took my hot chocolate and said I'll bring you a hotter one. It came out piping hot. I enjoyed the background music with our meal. Our orders were plated nicely. This restaurant blew me away. I can honestly say that I am not used to eating at such an elegant restaurant. Walking in, we were greeted and seated promptly for our reservation. It is a beautiful place with great lighting, La Jolla specific wall art (lot and block map incorporated - which is really awesome to see if you are real estate savvy). The orchids were beautiful and the service was fabulous as well. Our server and the staff were very attentive juggling their other tables and parties. They ensured a great expereience. We started with the Jamaican Jerk Pork Belly with baby carrots, swiss chard, thinly sliced plantains, black-eyed peas, spicy jellies, and a delicious sweet potato puree. This was my favorite. The pork belly was melt in your mouth delicious and all the flavors came through even though it looks so delicate. We also got the House-Made Sourdough Bread with their whipped salted butter. The bread was so soft and warm with a nice crust, and the whipped butter was perfect and fluffy on the bread. We tried the Grilled Swordfish Tacos with lime serrano crema (wow), smashed avocado, shredded cabbage, pickled red onion, micro cilantro, tomatillo, and serrano salsa verde. These looked amazing and tasted wonderful as well. The colors were beautiful and the fish was cooked perfectly. The other entree that I devoured was the Nine-Ten Burger which is a half-pound patty of Angus beef (medium rare of course), housemade pickles, butter lettuce, tomato, mustard seed aioli, with truffle fries and sauteed onions. This burger was so delicious and juicy. My mouth is watering thinking about this dish. Especially those truffle fries. So perfectly crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside also piping hot and fresh. For desserts, we got the Half-Baked Chocolate Cake and the Peach and Raspberry Tart. The Half-Baked Chocolate Cake was hot and decadent. The caramel sauce really came through and the col vanilla ice cream brought such a great balance to the richness of this dessert. The Peach and Raspberry Tart was also very delicious. The poached peaches, whipped raspberry cream, the delicate butter cookie, and the house made sorbet was to die for. It looked so pretty with the dried raspberry crumbles. Overall, excellent service and amazing food and presentation. I am a frequent customer at Nine-Ten. Last night was far from the quality service and food I have come to expect from the restaurant. First of all, the hostess seemed to want to make me wait (over 10 minutes) to be addressed. And then, she continually punched a screen and after some minutes led me to the only two top in the restaurant. It was not half full. After I said I was not happy with the table and that I am a regular customer, she cleared a booth for me and my guest.. I was the only woman in the restaurant who was not accompanied by a man. Coincidentally, my first entree had to be sent back because it was overly salted. My replacement entree,cacao Pepe came totally unsalted. One time every thing was going great until the waitress just split, we never saw her again and no one asked us how we were doing .This went on for too long so I walked up to the hostess stand and explained to her that we wanted to pay our tab and leave, needless to say that was that servers last night on Prospect Street. Shouldve been a sign that when I asked for the hostess to remove it, there was zero apology or any hint that there was anything out of the ordinary. Opened up the napkin to find another NASTY hair (different color than my own) in the middle. Multiple more hairs littering the small ledge that they seat you next to on the terrace. Wine was corked, again nope on any apology or any indication anything was out of the ordinary, which just isnt acceptable at these prices. Burger was super bland, dry bun, strangwly devoid of salt, and cheese tasted like Old Refrigerator. We didnt bother with dessert. This place did not disappoint. I had a great old fashioned. For starters we had the Caesar salad and Jamaican Jerk Pork Belly. It only comes with three pieces, but you can split the third easily. We both had the half jerk chicken, which was phenomenal. It was not only tender, but it had an amazing flavor, which was very unique. It was definitely, by far, one of the best chicken dishes I've had. The staff were extremely friendly with the manager making rounds to check on all the guests. The only feedback I have would be the interior. The interior feels quite old-fashioned, which doesn't create a cozy date night dining atmosphere. The bright lights and slow ambiance give it more of a cafeteria feel, and I don't remember any background music either. Besides that this spot is great! read more

This review is for brunch only. I highly recommend that you dine here for happy hour or dinner which I would say is 5*. Admittedly, I am not a 'brunch' person, I don't like breakfasts, and it was lunchtime anyway. I was tempted to order the short rib toast but went with mussels instead because I felt that the egg on the beef would be too rich. Well- if I hadn't been ravenous I don't think I could have eaten it. It was way over-sauced and the toast was soaking wet and squishy in the middle. The crust was beautiful so I felt like a gorgeous piece of bread was just wasted under this heap of mussels. I would have much preferred that they serve me a bowl of mussels with a toast on the side. The romesco-style sauce was a little too reminiscent of 1000 Island dressing. The diced fennel was there for crunch but I didn't taste any smokiness suggested by the ingredient descriptions "blistered fennel" and Calabrian chiles. I just tasted "pickles in spread" lol! At least at In-n-out the bread isn't soggy. My friend had the Reuben and I ended up eating her sauerkraut and actual cornichons which were ok. Her 'truffle fries' did not taste of truffle at all and I ate a lot of them in search for any hint. Finally, I asked for a shot of espresso with ... gasp... a shot of caramel. And was there any caramel at all? Not that I could taste. And I was once a professional taste tester. Overall ok, because our server Alex was so sweet. Loved going to Nine-Ten pre-Covid and was one of my designated go to restaurants once things opened back up after 6/15/21. My wife surprised me with an early birthday dinner which I enjoyed but I thought the service was a little off for the night. Our waiter missed some items we ordered and seemed like he was having a difficult time managing his tables. Nonetheless, I came here for the food and thought it tasted good but for some reason not as great as before. We started off with some WA oysters which tasted fresh and sweet. The tuna crudo was a great mixture of sweet and tangy and the tuna texture was spot on. My wife ordered the duck breast which was cooked just right and the duck jus made the dish come all together. I ordered the rib eye which I thought was a little over cooked but at least it wasn't chewy. It was also a tad bit on the salty side. But the Parmesan crispy potatoes on top were delicious! Took my girlfriend here for her birthday dinner. It was a nice surprise that they provided a card with a coupon (for the NEXT time we come) to use. Most of the staff was really friendly and welcoming, which was great. However, the actual atmosphere of the place wasn't great. Everything you did, ordered, said and looked at felt judged by someone or everyone. It was not comfortable at all. As for the actual food, the best item by far was the oysters they had as a special! Whatever sauce they used was to die for! We also got the lamb tartare, which I thought was pretty good except the olive flavor was way too strong. For dinner, I got the Halibut and my girlfriend got the Lamb Loin. Both dishes were pretty decent, but the flavor and the amount you get is absolutely NOT worth the price. We didn't even stick around for dessert. Overall, I had high hopes for this place, but everything was only okay in the end. Went here instead of going to little Italy for a birthday. It should be ten stars. The picturesque La Jolla scenic sunset was a beautiful backdrop, but the food and service stole the show. We did the mercy of the chef tasting and every bite was an explosion of perfection. Quinn our waiter and our server made the night extremely special and chef Jose gave us visual and palette work of art as well as the best food I've had outside of France and Beirut. Nine Ten is one of my favorite go-to restaurants for a special night out. It's beautiful inside, and the service is spot on. Chris was our server last night and we opted for the Mercy of the Chef offering with the wine pairing. It was extraordinary! There was a light refreshing salad, then we had a salmon dish that had a wonderful warm yet light sauce. The third course was a ribeye, with some charred onions and a yummy mexican-inspired sauce that made you think elevated carne asada. The fourth course was a cheese plate that completely surprised me with how delicious it was! The dessert was a whipped banana creme with a caramel wafer. Absolutely wonderful. The wines we had paired with each course were from Spain, Portugal, Italy and Hungary. Such a fabulous way to spend my birthday. We had the duck as an entree, which came with a pretty decent amount of meat, and asparagus and mushrooms on the side. We found this dining experience via OpenTable while searching for a great anniversary dinner in a new city. Their Mercy of the Chef tasting menu looked fun, so we went for it. The whole team gave great service, and our server, Chris, was super knowledgeable about wine. We don't drink, but we heard him having a really conversation with the next table over. If you're a wine lover, I'd request him as your server. Each meal was delicious. Pacing was fantastic. There were just two of us and we had to leave for a movie, so they kept it moving nicely for us, even adding an additional course and an additional dessert. We upgraded to the white truffles on the pasta course, which was really good and probably my favorite course. Hot tip for anyone who isn't too concerned with being elegant: keep the bread coming and use it to sop up the sauce with each dish. So good! The only thing I'd note for anyone considering this place is that as we drove up it was sunset time and the views were spectacular - and this restaurant doesn't have any views. The bulk of dinner was once it was dark, so it didn't really matter, but if you want an ocean view, this isn't your place. Otherwise, definitely a great place for a great meal. read more

I've been here once before many years ago and had really good memories about it, especially their salmon dish. My partner mentioned about wanting some good fish for dinner and Nine-Ten came to mind. Went in for a Saturday dinner and they did not disappoint! I ordered a salmon dish again for myself and I loved loved loved how they 1) crisped the skin and left it on and 2) cooked only to medium-rare to medium. Now THIS is how you enjoy salmon at its best. The other seafood dishes like hamachi sashimi and daily special sea bass were wonderful as well. Other dishes we ordered were cacao e Pepe and semifreddo which were great too. I've been here twice in the past month for 2 dinner meetings and my experiences were very different. My experience for the first meeting in August was not great and it was the first time I've ever sent a dish back to the kitchen. I had ordered the filet mignon cooked to medium and it wasn't even rare-it was pretty much just seared on the outside and completely raw on the inside. We all started with the salad which was good, followed by choice of either the halibut or filet, and then dessert. I cannot recall the name of the dessert from the first meeting, but see picture. That dessert was OK, nothing to rave about. Our food for the first meeting came in a timely manner. Our second meeting was last night and the food was much better. Same salad to start, with same dinner options, however the filet was cooked to medium as asked and came with a few different vegetables than the first time including Jerusalem artichoke which I had never heard of but were delicious. We had the half baked chocolate cake for dessert this time and it was great. Unfortunately with last nights meeting our food didn't come out until the entire presentation was over, so towards the end everyone was getting pretty hungry. One of my colleagues tried to take their leftovers home but was told the chef doesn't believe in to-go boxes and wasn't allowed to. I'm not sure if this is their policy for all people dining here or just for group reservations but I found that very surprising. All in all, I'm glad I was forced to give it another shot. We had a nice dinner meeting here for work last week and I already have plans to go back for a date night. The outdoor seating area has a lovely view of the water that would be perfect for a romantic dinner. We tried a lot of different things, but the cauliflower steak, watermelon salad, and panna cotta were amazing! They also have an amazing half price bottle night on Wednesdays! Came here for my bf's birthday after a day being tourists in San Diego (lol). I've been here before for dessert/drinks but never for a meal. Due to covid, they require you order food before you can order drinks, which was fine with us. We ordered an appetizer and entree to share, and each had drinks. We ordered the Jamaican Jerk Pork Belly (10/10 recommend) and the Braised Colorado Lamb with Piquillo Pepper and Goat Cheese Agnolotti (6/10). The pork belly was amazing. Soft and tender but not too fatty. The lamb was also delicious, but the goat cheese agnolotti were a bit much. I like goat cheese generally, but I found it clashed a bit with the seasonings on the lamb. The drinks we got were... drinks. Nothing spectacular and overpriced as expected. We also got dessert on the house. The Vanilla Cream Donuts (15/10) were sooooo good. I would come here just for these. My boyfriend and I went to Nine-Ten for our anniversary. I did some research to find good places to eat around San Diego and found that this place is #1 on TripAdvisor with a Michelin Plate of Distinction Award so we decided to make our reservation here. The complimentary bread was amazing as is usually the case for most fine dining venues. The butter tasted fresh with flaky sea salt on top, I wish I could take it home and eat it everyday. For appetizers, we first ordered the Jamaican Jerk Pork Belly ($17) following advice from the Michelin guide. And let me tell you it was AMAZING. If there is anything you have to try from this place, it's definitely that. The meat was super tender as if it had been braising for hours. The fat melts in your mouth and the combination of flavors just melded perfectly. Not a strong flavor at all. We also ordered the Cacio e Pepe ($17). They give a heathy portion of this it's almost enough for a full entree if you're in the mood for pasta. This was also really good but a little salty for my taste, not much complexity especially compared to the pork belly dish. Good, but not great. For entrees, my boyfriend ordered the Jamaican-Style Braised Oxtail ($34). I was amazed by the portion size of this entree. It came with a full bowl of roasted veggies which we were both a big fan of. The oxtail was cooked to perfect fall-off-the-bone tenderness. I found this a little too strong for my palate but my boyfriend definitely enjoyed this meal thoroughly. I ordered the Roasted Colorado Lamb Loin ($38). I was a big fan of the different flavors and textures this plate came with. You get some sweet from the pieces of apple, starchiness from the squash but also some savory sauciness from the squash puree. The lamb was cooked to a perfect medium rare without tasting at all gamey. Might I add, it also came looking like a piece of art. Lastly for dessert, we ordered the Pear Tarte Tatin ($11) and the Almond Mocha Mousse ($11). Both of which were honestly really disappointing especially when you want to end off a good meal. The tarte tatin had no caramelization, it was kind of just soggy fruit on dry shortbread. They serve it all deconstructed but honestly it tasted better with the ice cream providing a little moisture on the fruit and the crust. The flavors on the almond mocha mousse were overwhelming. The chocolate was a little too strong, and after a while got a little too sweet. Presentation is great for these desserts but not much else. Good drink selection as well! I ordered the French Twist ($14), made strong so be careful lol. My boyfriend got a Cuvée des Jacobins Rouge which we haven't found anywhere else. I'm writing this review a month later but when we came it was SD Restaurant Week so we were able to avail of a deal: $60pp - an appetizer, entree and dessert per person, which is not that great considering the a la carte prices of each of these items (listed). I think we saved $8 total lol. Going forward, we'll ask for an a la carte menu and skip the dessert. Took off a star for the sad desserts. Also took off another for overall ambience. The seats are placed so close together that if one person scoot their chair back they might bump into the chair behind them. We got sat in a booth but the table was pushed in so close to the bench it's a bit hard to sit in. I was also able to hear entire conversations around me from sitting so close to other tables. The place is fairly loud for a place with dim lighting. Also our server wasn't too warm if I'm being honest. I wanted to LOVE this place, but sadly I left feeling like it was a solid 3 in my book. tl;dr: order the Jamaican Jerk Pork Belly, you won't regret a thing. The meat dishes are amazing, so is the free bread. But if you're looking for quiet and romantic, this place isn't it. Skip the dessert and go elsewhere. read more

This restaurant is located in La Jolla inside a hotel, it is a small quaint establishment. They have limited tables outside that require reservation, they do have bar seating that is available first come first serve. I was greeted by a nice hostess and taken to our seat early, the service was average in my opinion. Everyone was friendly yes but I was expecting a little bit more from a Michelin restaurant. The ambience is a bit fancy, but you still have hotel guest who might be dining and shorts and a T-shirt, or passing through while you're eating dinner. I wish this was a standalone restaurant so you wouldn't have that distraction. The food menu is quite small, the two stars of the show were jerk chicken and the Cacio e pepe. The salad that came out was quite frankly a joke, it was so tiny. I understand fine dining restaurants typically have smaller portions, but it wouldn't have hurt to put more lettuce on the plate. Well I didn't enjoy my experience this is not a place I would be running back to. When I compare to other five star experiences I've had this experience was just okay. read more

I am sorry to say that Nine-ten was a big disappointment. The service was horrible. We had a reservation. When we got to the entrance no one greeted us for a few minutes. Then when a woman came by she confirmed our reservation, then took a phone call for a LONG TIME. We just stood there. Things went down from there. My salad plate sat empty in front of me for 30 mins. Our water glasses were not refilled and we had to flag someone down. our waitress acted as if we did not exist. The food was also disappointing. We routinely eat at high level restaurants. In the last few months we have eaten at The Marine Room, Mables Gone Fishing, Catania, Jeune and Jolie. Nine Ten does not even come close to these other fine dinning restaurants. They need a serious re-think and change of staff. read more

I didn't expect anything out of the ordinary... typical high end American menu. I saw they were Michelin recommended, and I thought it might be worth giving the place a try. Thank god we did, because the execution at this place is amazing. The food is fantastic . Never in my life have I ordered a swordfish and couldn't stop thinking about how juicy and tasty it was. Absolutely perfect execution on all the dishes. The standout, though, was the corn angolotti. Unbelievably delicious. Service was courteous but not as attentive or amicable as other places I've been. I was waiting for someone to come by and ask me if I wanted another drink (and I did), but that didn't happen until much too late (so I had whiskey for dessert). The inside was very pretty, bit it is a smaller space and most of the restaurant has no view of the ocean. There are a small handful of tables outside, otherwise you are placed inside, opposite the ocean. Overall, I can't recommend this place enough on flavor alone. Great job, chef! We were celebrating a special occasion so we decided to head for Nine-Ten to enjoy some fine-dining in the heart of La Jolla. The experience was everything we could have wanted, from beginning to end! We started the meal off by sharing two starters - The Cacio E Pepe and the Halibut Cerviche. The former was delicious - green spaghetti with Parmesan cheese; the latter is raw (similar to sushi) and served with tortillas that have been sprinkled with a spicy, tangy seasoning. Both dishes were good, but the Halibut was my favorite of the two. For our mains, I went with a pasta dish, and my friend ordered the fourteen ounce grilled Prime Ribeye steak. The meat was tender, perfectly cooked, and beautifully marbled; served with a baked potato it made me wish I had opted for a steak as well - good thing we both like to share ;-) Having taken the precaution of using Uber instead of driving, we both enjoyed several delicious cocktails with our meal, and then took a leisurely walk around La Jolla Cove before calling Uber to head home. Very impressive. Impeccable service, generous drinks and the finest food in La Jolla. I've been here a handful of times and been more impressed each time. Charming atmosphere with a rotating menu but I can highly recommend all the pasta dishes, scallops and the Colorado Lamb as consistently delicious. We enjoyed the brunch here, the hotel and restaurant look nice and the service was really good. The food for the most part was great, especially the espressos, cappuccinos, and pastries. The short rib toast was also tasty, but the burger ordered medium came out raw and the mahi mahi tacos were surprisingly bland. We will come back and try a few different things next time! read more
