This place is located in La Jolla inside of an upscale neighborhood, 1st floor of some hotel. I forget the name, but looked more of an old money establishment. $$$ Parking: Parking was moderate. I had to circle around a couple of times to finally park maybe 3 minutes walking distance from the place. We got there a little early for our reservation, so we walked down these stairs and hung out at La Jolla Beach. Wonderful view, very peaceful. Service: Excellent. The hostess sat us down at our table and our waiter was very helpful with suggesting food off the menu. Very knowledgeable and professional. Ambiance: Nice decor, actually looked rich and elegant, by looking at the place and view, you kinda already know the meal will cost a pretty penny. Ha. Food: They started us off with complimentary bread which came in a folded napkin inside of a small basket type box. After that, we ordered the soup of the day, some carrot type soup. Very delicious. I then ordered the Hanger Steak medium well. It came out very fancy like w/ green beans and onions. Prepared like something you would see on Iron Chef. Of course I have to wait until I no longer live here to finally make it out to this restaurant. Came for a graduation brunch/lunch for a dear old friend (but not old) of mine. Enjoyed lunch with her cute and funny family and a few close friends. The service was there as soon as we sat down. I went with the short rib panini, after battling out the options internally. Meat wins, this time, again, so sorry, healthy salad. Then, when the waitress asked, salad or fries? Sorry, stomach, fries wins again, especially when they're truffle fries. The short rib panini was a delectable infusion of flavor. The meat was succulent, the cheese was ooey and gooey, and the veggies and bread came together becoming a beautiful piece of art, in my stomach. The truffle fries, ohhhhhhhh the truffle fries. Kudos to the chef tonight, as Nine-Ten is pricey, but tonight it was worth it! It's small with a ritzy chic atmosphere, and my friend and I felt pampered. I tasted a Chenin Blanc from Stellenbosch, South Africa, and enjoyed this crisp white wine so much that I had 2 glasses for $9 each. It has a subtle taste of minerals. We also had salads at happy hour prices before dinner. The baby romaine Caesar salads were tasty, although not the best part of the meal. I liked the anchovy taste in the dressing. My swordfish entree was perfectly cooked, and it was nice and tender. It is quite pricey at $35 for an entree, so get your spendy trendy date to pay for dinner, or come with your friend who has that cool Passport Dining membership card, or come for happy hour, or ask if bottles of wine are still discounted on Wednesdays. I tasted my friend's Colorado lamb, and was impressed with the flavor and tenderness. The mushroom soup was very tasty and it was unique...lots of wild mushroomy flavor. Sweet stuff? For sure! I ordered the coconut cake with coconut lime purée, salted coconut crunch, and passion fruit ice cream, and it fulfilled my tropical fantasies for the evening. Funny, it looked like an Easter art project decorated by a pre-K class, but it tasted quite sophisticated. (-: Loved it! My friend had the classic half-baked chocolate cake, which is always a winner, and I've had it several times before. Come super early for happy hour and sit in the cozy lounge where they have plush furniture. You can have a private conversation before it gets crazy. Great Experience! La Jolla is truely one of the nicest part of San Diego; the sunsets, the ocean breeze, and the vibe. Downtown La Jolla contains several small boutique shops, ice cream parlors, and fine dinning. When it comes to fine dinning, you have George's California Modern, Wiskandladel, Roppongi, Nine-Ten and many other restaurants not mentioned on this list. A few years back my girlfriend, (now wife), and I stumbled upon NINE-TEN on a Friday evening while walking around downtown La Jolla. The first thing we looked at was the menu outside of the restaurant. Next what caught our attention was that this restaurant allowed the customers the option to add tuffles to their meal for an additional fee, (depending on the type of truffle: black or white). What finally sold us was the Nieman Ranch Tomahawk Ribeye chop for two, served with Gnocchi infused in white truffle oil. Til this day that was by far the best meal we have ever had. Now fast forwarding to the present. On September 22, 2010, my wife and I decided to participate in the San Diego Restaurant week, and guess who was on the list of Restaurants? NINE-TEN! Because of our last experience there, we decided to dine there again. At $40 per person you get a three-course meal, or for $15 more, you get wine pairing with your meal. My wife opt for the wine pairing with her meal. One thing I noticed when I looked over the menu in the restaurant was that the menu was slightly different than the one posted on the website. The menu in the restaurant had more appetizer selection. For our first course, I chose the Jamacian jerk pork belly, and my wife picked the house made spaghetti with lamb sugo and pecorino. Both were great choices. The pork belly was cooked perfectly to fork tender, and served with baby carrots, swiss chard, plantains, black-eyed peas, spicy jellies & sweet potato puree. My wife's spaghetti was also delightful, the noodles were perfectly cooked aldante, and paired perfectly well with a glass of Melbec blend. For our second course I chose the Butcher's "cut" steak (a.k.a. flat iron) served with corn and some sort of a creamy mousse, and my wife had the Rock cod served with sauteed vegetables. Both were good. Initially I asked for my steak to be cooked medium-rare, but it came out too rare and a bit chewy and required more cooking time. I ended up having to request that my steak be cook a little longer. The waitressed took the steak back without and questions. After they returned my steak, it was nicely re-plated and cooked to perfection (medium-rare). My wife's rock cod was perfectly cooked. Third course (dessert): For our third course, my wife ordered the chocolate hazelnut semifreddo, served with bananas, crispy chocolate wafer, and orange emulsion. I ordered the 910 signature half-baked chocolate cake, served with carmel sauce and vanilla ice cream. Both desserts were AMAZING! Overall, our experience was pretty good. I would have given this restaurant five stars if my steak was cooked perfectly the first time. I understand that cooking a Flat-iron steak can be tricky. What's not to love about this place? The atmosphere, the service, and the FOOD are all great! The only negative I could give is parking is difficult. Went on Thursday night and started off with a great $5 glass of the house red wine. I've tried a lot of not so good happy hour "house wine" but this one was very good. The reviews are dead on with the Pork Belly. Doesn't sound super appetizing, but I am now a big fan of this very flavorful bacony cut of meat. Then there was the short ribs... They were savory, tender, and easily tear apart delicious. I was introduced to the potent, a little goes a long way amazingness of the black garlic. The little dabs on the plate were just heaven paired with the meat. We also shared the chef's special of the night which looked like it came straight from the sea with the foamy sauce. The fish was tasty, the pasta was odd with it's very firm texture, the lobster good, the octopus was very whole and flavorless (which I didn't really care for), and the white asparagus and sauces were nice. Dessert was the Half Baked Chocolate Cake. It was very delicious with the hot caramel paired with vanilla ice cream, they blended well and it just melted in my mouth. Stopped by while in La Jolla for vacation. This is a hotel restaurant but was fantastic food! The children's menu covered the kids and the service was impeccable. Alia was our waitress and we were never in want of anything. We started off with the cheese plate - we tried all four cheeses and the accompaniments were delightful. The house made fig preserves and quince paste was amazing and complimented their respective cheese perfectly. The cocktails were great and reasonably priced, the steak I had was phenomenal which is saying a lot because I am a native Houstonian and we know steak. The truffle fries that came with my boyfriend's Reuben were excellent. They have many gluten free options which made it nice for me and they even had a Rosemary gluten free bread to accompany the meal. We shared a bunch of the half priced menu items, and enjoyed a few drinks-- I forget the name, but I ordered a drink named something like Colonial Sweet Tea, and this was delicious! (I had 2!) The duck confit was one of my favorites, and the pickled veggies on the charcuterie board were great. The short rib panini was pretty good, and the truffle fries we ordered with this were outstanding. The last time I came here for dinner, everything was also wonderful, service was great... We had an excellent dinner at Nine-Ten with some old friends. We were in town and staying at the Grande Colonial, so we decided to give Nine-Ten a shot. Very glad we did. All 4 of us had the prix fixe, which allows you to choose an appetizer, an entrée, and a desert for $55. To start, I had the alba truffle gnocchi, which was fantastic. Pillowy pasta with a creamy cheesy sauce that had shaved truffles on top. This dish was a little more expensive than the other appetizers, but it certainly was worth it. If they offered this dish as an entrée I would absolutely get it the next time we eat here. The wife had the lobster bisque. It had nice big chunks of lobster and a thick sauce. But, the soup needed seasoning, particularly salt. This isn't to say it wasn't a good soup, it was, but it certainly lacked a little flavor. For dinner, I had the short rib. This was flavored with red wine and served with a lot of root vegetables. This was a classic short rib dish, beyond tender. You could eat it with a spoon. The depth of beef flavor was strong throughout. With the root vegetables and beef consommé, it basically was like a vey fancy (and delicious) pot roast you make at home. The wife had the scallops. These were buttery and tender, with an excellent sear. Also, they were really impressive looking, it was a cool presentation. My favorite part of this dish was the piquillo pepper puree. For dessert, I had the half baked chocolate cake. This was beyond decadent. It was basically a cake with some thick sauce. The wife had the caramel apple, which was sort of like a deconstructed apple tart dish. The green apple sorbet was not overly sweet and was refreshing. Also, there was a nice and crunchy fennel and green apple salad. This was a unique dessert that she would order again. The wine list was good, but not hugely extensive. Service was fantastic. We decided to try new restaurant while we were visiting in La Jolla and we heard good comments about this particular restaurant. We chose the 3 items Combo dinner for $55.00 per person, that included appetizer, entree and a dessert. Food was delicious and service was good, but portion was quite small, after dinner, we were still hungry. In my opinion, this restaurant is for the Yuppie, its a place to impress others and feeling prestige; but it's not a place for those were very hungry for good food. Our party of 8 came around 4:00 pm after the SDSU graduation. We heard they had burgers on the bar menu (restaurant was closed) and found enough room in the bar area to seat all of us. 8 burgers were ordered and we sat in anticipation for what one member in our party called "The best burgers in San Diego." They did not disappoint. My blues cheese burger was plump and juicy, savory and well seasoned. Conversation came to a halt as everyone enthusiastically dug in. In the 70s-80s this place was the Colonial, which is part of the Grande Colonial Hotel. We would stay at this place every summer for 2-3 weeks it was my mom's favorite place to stay. I haven't been back to this place for over 25 years. This is a topnotch in every way, the service, the food and the decor of this restaurant. It's best to do a reservation 9:00 call time, be late be deleted. Once I was seated 2 waiter came over, 1 to fill the water glass and wish me a good morning and the other asked what I would like to drink to start with. Orange Juice please. I took a look at the menu before I came in on line. I ordered the Huevos Rancheros with a side of potatoes and a fruit bowl. The potatoes where excellent as was the fruit bowl, large amount of each serving, I have no idea where a reviewer would say the have small portions, look at the pictures. Potatoes-5 Fruit Bowl-5 The Huevos Ranchero, this was pretty good, eggs cooked just right, nice corn tortillas the sauce was excellent with a good amount of cheese, it all came together great, the only problem was they use to much black beans in it, I'm not a very big fan of black beans but it was workable. 3 Total Amount, $34.00 not with tip. Went with husband and infant to place order for take out on a Friday right when they opened for dinner. The service was horrible. The host did not greet us and avoided eye contact the entire time. I don't understand why he was standing there if he was going to act that way. A server (?) came and stood next to him as she took our order. Again, she didn't even bother to greet or introduce herself. The server who gave us the food didn't greet either and the host turned his body away when we went to pick up the food. I think the staff need to be reminded of common manners or something because it left a very poor impression on us... probably will not be returning again because of their rude services and the food was just mediocre. Ventured here for Easter breakfast after my sister made reservations and she was really excited about the place. The place was just as I thought it would be: a good breakfast spot, but not spectacular either. I looked on their menu beforehand to plan out what I would eat and I was a little disappointed that they didn't have some of the items I wanted, including the smoked salmon bagel. Instead I went with the regular eggs benedict which was good. Flavor was rich but not overwhelming, and the portion with a side of potatoes was plenty for a hungry person like I was. My sister complained that the food was lukewarm, and after thinking back on it, I have to agree. It didn't really bother me at the time, but the food could have been warmer, especially the potatoes/home fries (who likes lukewarm potatoes? not me!) We also shared the cinnamon roll (which I think has some grand marnier in it) and it was surprisingly good! But if you're thinking of a cinnabon style roll, fresh out of the oven, warm and gooey...this is not that type. It was room temp, more like a pastry style cinnamon "roll" you'd see at Starbucks. It still had great flavor though. coffee was cold....not OK. overall, meal had good flavor, reasonably priced for what you get, but not awesome...and they really need to up the temp on food..then maybe I'll go back again. read more

If yelp could allow me to give 10 stars, I would award Nine-Ten 11! Wow this was the best meal I've ever had! I went with a friend and we both tried the three course meal with wine pairing, making the meal itself cost $55 for each of us ( thank you restaurant week). The chef gave us complimentary bite-sized croquettes which were really good! I love croquettes! After I finished my first course I was already ready to leave. BECAUSE THE JAMAICAN JERK PORK BELLY WAS SIMPLY AMAZING. I don't usually enjoy pork, but wow this was something else. The soft, tender, pork was cooked perfectly and as cliche as this seems literally melted in my mouth. You know when you toast marshmallows how soft the insides are? Yeah it was very much like that. It was a meaty marshmallow. The wine pairing for this was especially tasty! My friend had the celery root soup and she said she really enjoyed it. I didn't taste it because I was too busy admiring the cook's pork . Honestly, after I ate this I was done, ready to leave. I did not know how the chef would top the APPETIZER. Next was the main course. I ordered the port wine braised beef short ribs. Again, I was amazed. I did not even need to cut the meat. I remember sticking my fork in the meat, and it literally cut itself! Once again, my course was cooked to PERFECTION! I've had great meat at many places, but the garnishes that were with the meat were absolutely phenomenal. If every parent prepared their vegetables the way they did here, KIDS WOULD FINISH THEIR VEGETABLES. So many flavors were being mixed that every bite was different. Every bite was amazing! My friend ordered the swordfish. I tried a bite and yes, the fish was cooked SO PERFECTLY. I always imagined swordfish as being tough (because they are so strong), but the fish was soft and very very juicy! Now on to dessert. Wow. I picked the spiced crumb cake on a whim, BUT THIS WAS THE BEST whimsical CHOICE I"VE EVER MADE. Everything was working so well together in this course. The mascarpone cream was heavenly and the bacon added the savory dimension. Put that mix onto the CLOUD THAT IS THE CRUMB CAKE ( THE CAKE WAS SO SOFT I WANTED TO CRY) and you really get a taste of heaven people. Wash it down with the OH SO COMPLIMENTARY WINE and you have this jigsaw of ingredients fitting oh so perfectly with each other to create a masterpiece. THIS DESSERT IN MY OPINION BEATS OUT THE HALF BAKED CHOCOLATE CAKE ( which was really decadent too, especially with the great port wine!). Although from the pictures the portions do seem a tad small, you have no need to worry. We had the last dinner of our honeymoon at this restaurant, we couldn't have made a better choice. This is the kind of place that you want to go to if you want to have a culinary experience. The food is just AMAZING! The decoration is tasteful, but nothing out of the ordinary, but the service and the food make it one of the best restaurants in the city. I really recommend the Cacio e Pepe, it's a very very special dish and you can accompany it with the 2020 Steward Ranch Albariño, a California wine that you can only find in a couple of restaurants in the city. We had the Almond Cake & Lemon Semifreddo for an after dinner sweet, a very light but complex dessert that went great with the rest of our meal. I will never forget this very special meal at NineTen, if you are thinking about going there, just do it, you are not going to regret it! My one and only recommendation would be to try to get the folds out of a tablecloths, it was the only thing that put me off a little bit. But this is a quibble compared to how wonderful everything else was. read more

If it hadn't been for the fact a friend introduced me to this place, I might not have ever visited. Thankfully I did, and enjoyed some of the best risotto of my life. The food is probably the best in La Jolla, with a wine list that would make any Zinfandel blush. The truffle fries are also real yummy, and I'd recommend that half baked cake since it's amazing like everyone says. Also, I gotta give a shout out to the staff who is not like their douchey counterparts at other LJ restaurants. Usually the scene goes as such: Walk into nice establishment, but greeted by 18-year-old La Jolla High School snob who owns nicer shoes than me (true). Great location in downtown La Jolla, but parking is always a challenge, so plan extra time to find a place on the street or pay for valet parking in front of the restaurant. With a baby and getting to the restaurant on time they stated they had to seat 5-6 tables before us and it would take 30 minutes to seat them. Not sure how it takes 30 minutes to seat 5 parties, should take 1 minute. I would have been happy to seat myself, but instead Eric and Veronica wanted to ruin the night for everyone. Opposite of what you want when you dine out to relax. Total opposite. They should be let go, host staff being nice is important for a restaurant and the fact that they are still working means management is horrendous. Shame on them. read more

Take a stroll down Prospect Ave and you will see a plethora of restaurants, one for every taste. Nine-Ten is towards the end of the road. It is located inside a hotel, but I imagine they get quite a bit of outside traffic. We came for lunch on a Tuesday and we were quickly seated and attended to. Food and drink came out quickly as well. The service was very courteous. The restaurant isn't big by any means, but it's comfortable. However I wouldn't bring a very large group here. I had the panini after reading some reviews. It was delicious, albiet a little small. Truffle fries were great. The menu overall is a little limited for lunch but the items that they have are done well. Overall I'm not sure if I would return since there are other restaurants in the area that I prefer to Nine-Ten. Worth a try though! read more

As a Clairemont hick, I never thought I'd set foot in a downtown La Jolla restaurant. But with a little better income than before and a restaurant week deal going on, I set my first steps into a La Jolla restaurant at this fine establishment. The wait staff were attentive, on point with their recommendations, and respectful. I had the foie gras, which is the dish I remember the most out of several others. Was a bit scared by some negative reviews, but they all seemed to be for breakfast or brunch... After dining here last night, I am even more curious as our experience was one of near perfection. Went for dinner. Sat in the back patio with a view of the ocean and the pool. Nice and quiet. Did three course menu... To start Lobster and Crab salad... a little small and there was an up charge, but it was good. Jamaican Jerk Pork Belly... Oh man, one of the best things I have tasted. Cap Steak and Scallops for entrees... both amazing. Cooked to perfection. The flavors and presentation were fantastic. Art on the plate and the palate. Desserts... basil sorbet... perfect for a summer night and the half baked chocolate cake, which is superb and rich and decadent. Wine pairings were well thought out and added to each course. Our realtor recommended this restaurant, before that we walked passed this so many time and but somehow never got inside thinking, a restaurant inside a hotel, how good can it be. Plus, our favorite gelato shop and one our favorite coffee shop was just around the cornet. But how wrong we were. We went there for a celebration, we were welcomed with two flutes of champagne. But the surprise was they wrote a card for us with all the staffs signatures, which had a very personal touch. We ordered spaghettini, the sauce was excellent with hint of sea urchin. And we realized the chef wants to tingle wide spectrum of taste bud. Subtle to intense. She ordered prime rib and I ordered lamb, we didn't want to order any salmon or halibut as we just came back from Alaska. The lamb was one of the most juiciest and how pretty was the plating. And just as the appetizer, chef wanted to cover a wide spectrum of taste buds. It had coriander seed, fennel seed and the end result was amazing. The prime rib could have been better, it was a bit too sweet for our taste. But texture was nice and fork tender. The dessert was fine, but we absolutely love the candied hazelnut came with it. I loved the passion fruit iced tea, delicious tuna tartare appetizer with crisped rice garnish, and the wonderful apple sorbet (great texture!) Came here for happy hour with a friend after work! The first thing I noticed when I walked in was that the collective average age of everyone in the room was like 70. Surprisingly, this place wasn't too crowded and we were able to find a table right away. I ordered the charcuterie board with Fromager d'Affinois cheese, salmon rillette, and something similar to a pork pate. This board was very pretty and came with 3 different types of grilled bread/baguettes, pickled veggies, honey & onion marmalade, and a schmear of balsamic horseradish. The cheese was very similar to the taste and texture of brie, making it creamy and delicious. The salmon was shredded and mixed with a creamy sauce and green onions, and I thought it was interesting. The pork was rich and kind of salty, best eaten with bread and pickles. My friend got also got a charcuterie board, but with only 2 cheeses. However, hers was much plainer than mine and only came with the marmalade, walnuts, and considerably less bread. I would definitely recommend getting at least a 3 or 4 item spread because you get much more for a few extra dollars. I also got the short rib panini with truffle fries and I would have to say that the fries were my favorite part of the meal! The truffle flavoring was very prominent and the fries were cooked perfectly. The panini was quite good as well, but the meat was slightly sweet which I was not expecting. For dessert, we split the half baked chocolate cake and I have to say I was very disappointed with it. For a hefty $10, it was about the size of a tennis ball and came in a small bowl with a scoop of ice cream and whipped cream. It had this strange gummy texture that made it taste like it had been over-mixed or something. Although the food was good, except for the dessert, service was on and off. My friend ordered the lamb meatballs and after we had gotten all our other food and waited for 30 minutes, asked for it to be checked on. At least the bartender was honest and told us that she had forgotten to put the order in due to being distracted by personal problems, so we appreciated that she was straightforward about it. And she took the dessert off our bill at the end so that was nice and we weren't too upset. However by the time my friend's food had finally arrived, she was full and just picked at the new stuff she finally got and ended up taking it home. On another note, when the fries my friend ordered arrived, I asked the server (different from the bartender) for more ketchup. She RUDELY brushed me off, saying "What you don't have anymore? Here just use the ketchup on this plate". Excuse me??? I would not expect this sort of response from what I thought was an upscale restaurant. Sorry for making your life harder by asking you to bring me 5 cents worth of ketchup. If I'm at this sort of establishment, how can you ask me to mooch it off of my friend's plate? She obviously never came back and brought me any and I was too mad to ask anyone else for it again. Overall, my experience at this place was alright. I thought the quality of the food, especially for happy hour pricing, was fantastic but I was put off by the service we received. read more

What an exceptional night! The Nine-Ten tasting menu "Mercy of the Chef" is a tour of delights. Each of the five courses gets a detailed introduction and it's own unique plating. If you're ordering for two, you can expect most of the courses to be different, so bring someone who doesn't mind sharing and trading! Of course, with such small plates it becomes a test of caring and reciprocity to make that work. You've come out to La Jolla.. you used the excellent front-step valet parking at Colonial, you've committed to a great meal, now go all the way with wine pairings. This takes it over the top.. each course enjoys a pour of something unique.. we toured the whole world with never a boring glass. Our server/sommelier Chris had an encyclopedia of info on each, and a natural feel for what would make each plate interesting. I'm going with ALL FIVE stars. Sure, it's pricey, so the bar is high, but they delivered. We've done this twice now and both times were exceptional, so the consistency is there. Reservations were confirmed and on-time, staff always professional, energetic, and attentive. Even though the place was full on a Saturday night, we never felt they were hurried or understaffed. If I had to pick on something, it's the seating. Some of the tables are near structural columns that make for blocked views or distance. They have the one seat on bench + one chair arrangement that prevents sitting too cozy and close to your date. Also worth noting -- they can sell retail wines, so if you try something you like, it can save the trouble of hunting down your own bottle. The Chef's Mercy and fine wines are not inexpensive at about $89+$45, of course, but if you're looking for something uniquely memorable and a little extravagant, this is a special way to celebrate. read more

Great dinner, with a magical view. We went for anniversary, and had a great time! I had Japanese flavored Rib-eye and my wife had the halibut with side of oysters. For desert we had a banana cream pie with a wafer. Food was great, staff was great. read more

Just stopped by here for drinks did not do dinner that will have to be another time. The bar and restaurant are lovely though and I have heard great reviews about the food. Will defiantly come back here to eat. read more
