Nine-Ten is excellent. I've eaten many a lunch at this establishment, and pretty much always stick with the 3 course meal. The quality of the food is excellent, presented and prepared nicely. The service is always friendly and attentive if not terribly prompt. I had dinner here once, and all I can remember--because it is forever imprinted in my psyche--is the truffle gnocci I had. Holy cow. It was probably one of the top five most unbelievably rich and delectable dishes I've had in my life. I still dream about it... Hubby and I have been meaning to try this place forever-- and the perfect opportunity came when my cousin and his wife were down here for a conference a few weeks ago. We made reservations for a Thursday night, and got seated out on the terrace. It was a perfect night, perfect setting. Our server came out right away and was super nice and helpful and brought us an amuse bouche of duck foie gras. The sommelier came out to help us pour the wine bottle that we brought. We ended up just bringing our own wine and paid the corkage fee. Each one of us went with the 3 course menu (one hot/cold starter, entree, and dessert) for $42 a person. Now -- how in the heck do you pass that up? I ended up going with the lobster risotto, along with 3 grams of shaved truffle on top. Mmmm. Hubby ended up with the hamachi sashimi, my cousin with the pork belly, and his wife another lobster risotto also with the shaved truffles on top. My lobster risotto was a bit underdone, as it was still a little hard, but the piece of lobster was absolutely perfect. The shaved truffles on top were a perfect pairing. My cousin's pork belly was un-freakin' believable. We even considered just ordering some more because it was that good! My husband's sashimi was also nice and fresh. For the entree, I went the lamb way, hubby with the halibut, my cousin with the beef shortribs, and his wife also with the halibut. My lamb medallions were cooked to perfection. My hubby's halibut was excellent! I wanted to swap with him because it was that amazing. Dessert didn't let me down either. I went with the olive oil semifreddo, in which our server commented that it was his favorite. I can see why!! It just intrigued me reading it off the menu... meyer lemon sorbet, ginger, olive oil powder... it was a nice, smooth, light finish to a great meal. Hubby went with signature 910 half baked chocolate cake, my cousin with the rosewater panna cotta. Both desserts were also delicious, but I have to say I'm totally hooked on the semifreddo. Took my hubby here for dinner last night. Since we were celebrating his birthday, we got the Mercy of the Chef. He got a birthday card signed by the staff, a nice touch. It was 1/2 price Wine Weds so we got to enjoy two nice bottles of wine (and corked the second to bring the leftover home). This is a smart way to try a bottle there, as they start over $50. The food was 3 stars but the 4th is there to compliment the waitstaff, who were all extremely friendly, helpful, and attentive. We experienced no aloofness. We chatted about Napa and France and all kinds of things with our waiter. I think in the end owing to the two bottles of wine we might have overtipped, but he was worth it. So, on to the food...there are officially five courses (app, fish, meat, cheese, dessert) but we got three little extras also. First must mention the bread offered at the start: the white bread had that crusty stale quality that reminded me of CPK's bread. The brown was OK, nothing special. The crackers were meh. Bread is clearly not their strong suit. Amuse bouche was crab with apples and brussels sprouts in a vinegary dressing. This was truly delicious! The acid was just right to balance the rest and the crab was fresh and the real deal. It was also a generous portion...I got TWO bites! Woot! Second we had an appetizer course, and they brought two different dishes to try (great idea! we shared everything). I had the hamachi sashimi appetizer, which had two small mushrooms and three nicely sized portions of fish, and a scallion dressing. The fish was good, not like wow, but certainly nice. The second offering though completely overshadowed it (and unfortunately, was the best thing all night...and the first...), which was lamb tartare. I hadn't had this particular meat as tartare before and it was divine. There was a lot of pepper in it and some toasted pine nuts. Just a wonderful explosion of buttery, rich umami flavor. YUM! Third was fish. I first tried salmon with an aioli and I think celery root? Something crunchy on the side. I really loved the salmon, it was warm and melty. The second fish was scallops with dots of brown sugar emulsion and cruciferous vegetables (including a pretty romanesco flower, love that vegetable). The scallops were cooked well and the root veg was nice, but overall I found it a little blah. Maybe the veg was overpowering the scallops. I didn't care for the sweetness of the sugar dots. Hubby preferred this one so I just tucked away the salmon. Next we got another surprise...this time uni over squid ink pasta. My first taste of uni (after seeing it at farmer's markets for ages) and sadly, I am NOT a fan. Tasted like feet. The first bite I had was just the pasta, and I liked it OK, but then after eating the uni I couldn't get the taste of it out of my mouth. So I just wasn't able to eat this course. Bummer!! Normally I love squid ink pasta. At least now I know I hate uni. The waitstaff noted my barely touched plate but didn't offer any replacement (which is fine, it was an extra after all). Meats were next, short ribs and jamaican pork belly. The short ribs were not cooked to my liking. I think they needed a bit more time to get melty--just seemed a bit dry. I needed more of the accompanying sauce because the meat just wasn't that great alone. The pork belly was ok, not really as hot as I'd like for a jerk dish, and I prefer how we make our pork belly at home. Neither meat dish was something to write home about, which is obviously disappointing since I think it's supposed to be the star of your dinner. The cheese course was next, which was really just two types of cheese served in two hunks on crackers. There was a nice humboldt fog that went well with the accompanying jam and our claret we were drinking. The second cheese was a gorgonzola, which I enjoy, but OMG it was like two GIANT hunks of it. Nobody needs that much gorgonzola. A small bite will do. We left most of it uneaten. Would have preferred more variety and smaller bits of cheese. Finally for dessert we got a tart-like dish with huckleberry and one other (goat?) ice cream (I wish I'd made them write down all the dishes). It had a candle in it, how cute. It was fine but nothing special. Again, we make really good ice cream at home. The second dessert was chocolate cold something (ice cream? gelato?) that was good, on a cake that was dry, alongside a couple chesnuts which are better left to singing about than eating. At the end we were treated to a homemade ginger truffle with our coffee which was really good -- better than the other desserts. So overall, I'd say we had a nice experience. We were happy to get a good price on wine and attentive service. The meal started off very promisingly but didn't really hold up throughout. Unfortunately when you spend nearly $300 on dinner (as this was, after tip), you do hope to be wowed, and we simply were not. read more

What Nine-Ten does very well is pull together combination of ingredients and give it a fresh feel. If all they served was soup, it alone would be worth the trip. In other words, what ever you decide to order make sure to get a side order of soup. I had the ham and brie sandwich with greens for lunch. I felt like a light lunch so this was fine. If I had more of an appetite, I might have went for the prix fixe lunch. Inside is cozy and seating is limited. Prices are reasonable for the quality of food. We had our son's birthday dinner here. Everything about the restaurant was better than expected. The service was superb and the food was amazing. We were pleasantly surprised to learn that wine is half price on Wednesdays. I had lamb, my husband had the rib eye , our son had duck and his girlfriend had a delicious pasta. All were delicious. Went to Nine-Ten based on Yelp reviews while on vacation in La Jolla. We wanted to share a drink with a friend who was not having dinner and they held the table for us. Really appreciated this. That being said, it was just ok. The squid ink risotto was excellent but the squid and chorizo was almost too rich and hid the delicious risotto. The lobster and crab salad was good, but the jelly was completely unnecessary and did nothing to enhance the flavor of the salad. The biggest disappointment was the short ribs. This should be flavorful from the slow cooking and fat. This version was cardboard tasting as a well done filet. It had some beef flavor but dry. Sorry to say, would not go again or recommend to anyone - especially for the price. read more

You know when your mother tells you this will be moment that she never forgets, every last detail has to be top notch. That was our dinner at Nine-Ten. SHORT VERSION: Perfect courteous, attentive, knowledgeable, friendly, attractive service. Innovative, delicious, memorable, sexy food. Great location, nice decor. Not cheap but worth every penny. NOT SO SHORT VERSION: I heard about Nine-Ten from the sous-chef at my restaurant as well as a few other employees who went to try it out a while ago. They all loved every thing about the place, especially the food truly being modern. I went on a Sunday night with my mother. We didn't have a hard time finding free parking on Prospect St. I knew where the restaurant was located in the hotel so finding the restaurant was a breeze. The hostess had us seated at a nice table towards the back of the restaurant very quickly. Our amazing server, who's name escapes me right now, promptly made her way to our table introduced her self and told us a little about Nine-Ten. She was a red head probably about 5' 7" and worked at Thomas Keller's Buchon in Las Vegas, ask for her. After her informative introduction speech I was even more excited and my expectations were at an all time high. I have a love hate relationship with menus that have too many amazing looking options. We struggled to narrow down to a few fantastic choices, this was challenging. So with a little help from our server, we ending up going with the 5 course prefix "Calivirgin Olive Oil" dinner. We did choose to add the wine parings. I must also add that while searching for what to eat, I was blown away with the outstanding, diverse, new and fresh wine list they boasted. Almost no "grocery" store wines! I loved that so much. Soon after we placed our order, another friendly lady, while the name also escapes me right now, poured us some bubbly rose from Liore. YEAH that's how to start any great meal! She was also a great accompaniment to our server. The first amuse bouche came out. A chilled cucumber, yogurt, apple soup. This was not the highlight of the evening. Perhaps if this was presented as a palate cleanser it would have been better. But not a great way to start the meal. The second amuse bouche was a fig crostini with house made ricotta cheese and aged balsamic with a dab of olive oil. Holy Moly! This was so tasty. I could have ate tons of them. They contrast between the aged balsamic and the sweet figs was exciting. The whole experience was house flawlessly and a firm crostini bed with a soft ricotta blanket. The orgasmic flavor combination got me really excited for what was to come. Cherry tomato Salad. While the name doesn't like anything special, it was unique and scrumptious. The salad had little droplets of olive oil jam, accompanied by tomato caviar, basil, confit tomatoes, and garnished with crispy mini rice bread cakes. Wow Mr Chef Jason Knibb, you are an awesome man, you please all my senses in one dish! The different textures of tomatoes, paired with the different flavors of each ingredient created a unique flavor with each different bite. Jalapeno Olive Oil Infused Tuna After that salad I didn't think it could get any better, I was wrong. This dish started with a jalapeno olive oil spread across the bottom of the plate, then with amazing precision fresh tasty tuna was added. The dish grew in complexity with compressed bananas, orange puree, shaved hearts of palm, and cilantro. The result was another unique dish that I will hold in the highest regards. Everything on that plate worked together in unthinkable ways. Lemon Olive Oil Poached Halibut This was with out a drop of doubt the best halibut I have ever had. It came plated with Chino Farms corn, chantterlle mushroom, and an uni-lemon oil emulsion. The fish was that perfect level of tenderness with it doesn't just fall apart, but you could eat it easily with a spoon. It also was insanely moist and flavorful. The crispy from the corn was a great texture adding idea. Another dish where all the flavors were just outstanding. Basil Olive Oil Marinated Duck If you have actually read this far, you can probably guess that I loved this too? Well yes I did! It was accompanied by cranberry beans, cipollini, and charred duck essence. The duck was not surprisingly cooked perfectly, it was moist, med-rare and delicious. This was a great last course in the food before desert as it was a little heavier and filled me up just to where I wanted to be. Olive Oil and White Chocolate Mousse This had to have been the best plated dish of the night. It looked like it out of the French Laundry cookbook or some place like Alinea. It took me a few moments to first admire the plate before I dug in. Had I known how delicious it was, I probably couldn't have waited as long as I did. Went here with the lady for Valentines Day and made a reservation using Yelp (I think this is a new feature? It's really easy to use!). Started off with some mixed drinks "Gina's Pleasure" and "High Jacked". Both were really good, although the High Jacked was a bit strong for my girlfriends taste. For our food we ended up ordering the Tuna Tartar, Jamaican Jerk Pork Belly, Halibut, Steak, and Scallops. The Halibut was on special that day and I had to try it - SO worth it, some of the freshest fish I've had in SD. The steak was also to die for, so juicy... every bite was amazing and my mouth is starting to water just thinking about it. Everything here is plated nicely with a mixture of wonderful sauces proportioned perfectly. Every bite of the meal is enjoyable. For dessert they had ran out of the Napoleon so I almost wanted to give them four stars... but the Nutella Tart and Green Apple Sorbet were amazing so crisis averted. Excellent and attentive service, fantastic wine selection, and a beautiful ambiance round out one of the best dining experiences I've ever had in San Diego. I've never actually consumed solid food here, but their menu options for a liquid diet are superb! The bar area is small but trendy. Chic atmosphere, innovative drinks, and great bartenders. With all of that, the right group of people migrate here. Everyone is polite and well dressed, no one too rowdy or wasted. By the end of the night there may be a few hot messes left conversing, but that's to be expected with the deliciously strong drinks served in frosted martini glasses that are impossible to stick to just one. My husband and I had a nice dinner on the patio, starting with splitting the cacio e pepe and bread starters. The pasta was super rich and we really appreciated the addition of mushrooms to the dish. I had the halibut and it was perfectly flaky and crisped on one side, with a delicious green sauce and tender vegetables. My husband had the cauliflower steak and loved the romesco sauce. We finished with the honey cake - not too sweet and lots of variety in the dessert's elements. Researching the San Diego restaurant scene while listening to my instincts, I decided on Nine-Ten in La Jolla for a celebratory meal over the holidays with our dear friends who moved from Houston to San Diego several years ago. My expectations were high and Nine-Ten delivered. I clapped with glee (thinking in my head that it was a subconscious reaction rather than the scene I was creating) when my first course appeared. The menu description of the "Maine Lobster and Dungeness Crab salad" read like poetry ... tangerine jelly, radishes, micro-fine herbs, horseradish aoili and tangerine reduction. It was a revelation in both presentation and flavor. I savored every bite. We enjoyed a variety of menu items created from quality ingredients and thoughtful, innovative preparation and presentation. From sushi-inspired raw offerings to meat and potato courses including the Port Wine Braised Beef Short Ribs, everything was consistently fabulous including the Half-Baked Chocolate Cake we shared to conclude the meal. I would love to return and try the Roasted Figs with peanut butter crumble, concord grape and bread ice cream. How's that for a combination of flavors? I rolled into San Diego for the Chargers vs Dolphins game. I always stop by La Jolla to chill out and relax. I wanted to try out a new place to eat so I busted out my trusty Yelp app. Nine-Ten looked like a good spot to try since it got high reviews. 1) Saturday night was really busy. I didn't have a reservation so our group grabbed the only open table in the bar area. I tend to favor the bar area because I like to relax and people watch. 2) I ordered the short ribs. O-M-G! This dish is A-mazing. Don't be fooled by the small portions of the two ribs. This is high-end cooking from the flavors to the presentation. I swear I was like a kid opening up a Christmas present with every bite. 3) The salmon entree was cooked with expertise; not overdone and slightly pink in the middle. The sauce is heavenly. I had to ask the server how was it made (not that I even have the capacity to recreate it). The flavors in it were so complex and delicious. 4) I had a glass of Meritage (forgot the name of the wine company). It complimented the ribs perfectly. Btw, the pour for a glass of wine is more than generous. It was like two pours. My friend got an Oban scotch neat. Be prepared to pay $18 for that pour. The service was stellar. I wouldn't expect anything less from a place like this. I'm coming back next time to try their 5-course tasting menu. I believe it was $100 (can't recall if that is or without the wine pairing). Awesome dinner experience! First off, the restaurant in the Grande Colonial is definitely more modern than the hotel. I doubt that I would stay in that hotel but moving on...creepy fixtures reminded me of the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland, just without the cobwebs. They offer a 3 courses for $45, include wine pairings and it's $60. The wine pairings are not just selected per course, but selected per plate. Very attentive! So, we all did the 3 courses and wine pairings. Before our appetizers were served, we were served an amuse bouche of salmon and something lemony. Definitely fishy...not like salmon nigiri. Interesting to say the least. I had the soup of the day, corn chowder and it was very good. I could have done without the fritter in the middle but it was good nonetheless. My friend's himachi was amazing! Then I had the duck! I'm usually not a fan of duck because it's too gamey for me. This was actually cooked perfectly and it was amazing. It was served with swiss chard and quinoa. One of my friends had the short ribs and she just said that she wished it was served with a heartier starch. Dessert was phenomenal. We all decided on the chocolate semifreddo. It wasn't too rich at all and the different flavors on the plate (caramel, bananas) just made it pop. This definitely is a splurge but worth it! read more

Decently good food and nice service without the wait of most popular brunch places. We sat on the back (slightly heated) patio with a peek of the ocean in the distance and our server was very attentive. I ordered the nine-ten omelet with potatoes and toast, which I considered good (mostly cause i love anything with avocado) but not extraordinary; my boyfriend ordered the eggs benedict and compared it to some of his favorites. We were recently in LaJolla and had a lovely dinner here. At first we were unsure of the selections on the menu and they weren't offering any specials the night we were there as it was a Thursday. We ended up ordering their ribeye steak and the Cacio de Pepe appetizer. It was literally one of the best steaks we've ever had and paired with our appetizer and Italian red wine we were so happy! It was enough to share and a very good value for the price. Our server, and all of the staff were awesome and we would highly recommend. Ordered their popular halibut dish, which I thought was too bland and dry. It was served sitting on a bed of tomato sauce, which I thought doesn't pair well with the fish, because if the fish had been more juicy and flavorful, the strong tangy tomato sauce would mask the delicate flavors of fresh fish. In this case, the sauce couldn't save the flavorless and dry halibut, since both flavors just don't go together too well. Also had the crab & lobster salad, which I thought was just ok. This came with tangerines, chunks of cold hard lobster meat and some salty crab meat, covered with a tangy gelatin. It was different, but I wouldn't order it again. The almond tart with almond gelato was good, especially the gelato, but after a few bites of the almond tart I felt it became a bit too sweet. Overall, the atmosphere was classy and nice. The servers were extremely attentive and professional. However, the food was just ok ... nothing spectacular given the prices. read more

You know how food is supposed to make you happy? This is the place that does it for me. I've been to Nine Ten 4-5 times over the past three years. It's my special place to go when I want to impress someone without going completely broke. Simply put, the food and wine is some of the best you will find in North San Diego. I first tried it during a restaurant week back in 2007 but was so impressed that I went back a month later to try the regular menu, and boy, was I a happy customer. The Main Lobster & Crab Salad, the New York Steak and the Half Baked Chocolate Cake are hands down delicious, no question. The selections are very good and the wine expert on staff really knows what he is doing, let him pair your choices and you will still be able to taste the wine and food the way it was meant to taste. They have a patio for lunch time and early evening. It can get a little chilly at night since they are only 2 blocks from the beach and cove. Their bar has a dozen or so seats and there is plenty of space to mingle while you wait for your table to be ready. The staff is all professional and knowledgeable. Considering its fine dining in La Jolla, two can eat for a decent price, about $120. If you pair wines with each course, spoil yourself once in a while, then it can get up there, about $200-225. Returned last night for the umpteenth time. We had the 3-course dinner with the wine pairings. Lamb Tartare and Mackerel en Escabeche were both excellent starters and the Duck Breast entree was sublime. Finished off with Green Apple Sorbet which was also excellent. Hot Tip: Have the wine pairings with your choice of the 3-course or Mercy of the Chef, which is a royal feast for a special occasion. I am a burger fiend. Tried a lot of burgers in a lot of states. Been living in SD for a while so I have been on the best burger hunt. I have had quite a few good burgers in SD. I found this place on Erin's Jackson 10 best burger place. The restaurant is located inside a hotel in La Jolla. Parking can be tough on the weekends since is is just around the corner from La Jolla Cove and Seal Beach. The restaurant is typical of a nice restaurant but that is not what I was looking for. I was looking to try there Nine Ten burger. I ordered the burger medium and the burger came out cooked to perfection. Perfectly pink in the middle the way I like it. The burger was delicious and you can taste the beefiness in the burger. It was accompanied by a perfectly sized brioche bun. You can tell that someone or some chef cooked the burger because it actually take experience to cook a burger right. This is not the usual fast food type burger or commercial burger joint. It is an upscale gourmet burger. It may be pricey but most gourmet burgers are pricey. You get what you pay for. Going to try their burger at happy hour for half the price. read more

On our second night at The Grande Colonial, we had dinner at the Nine-Ten restaurant and it was quite simply the best meal we've had while in La Jolla or on our recent travels to LA and the Central Coast. We both had the striped bass and it was fantastic. So my wife and I went out for our 9th anniversary dinner last night. We went to nine-ten, named so because its address is 910 Prospect. Its in a hotel, but it was really good food. Decor was ok, I mean its a hotel bar/restaurant so they have a mixed group of guests, but I think Firefly is nicer for the view. So the day before I brought over a bottle of our anniversary wine (Sterling "Three Palms" Merlot 2001) and talked to the maitre d about what I wanted for my anniversary dinner. I requested the "Mercy of the Chef" and asked that he pair a few of the courses with the Merlot. So this is what we got....by the way the Mercy of the Chef is five courses, and we each got something different on each course so we both got to try 10 courses !!!! A Free Amuse-Bouche - Fresh local strawberry with balsamic drizzle with a free glass of prosecco. Because it was our anniversary :) First course Me: Octopus, fingerling potato, parsley, kalamatta olive, spicy aioli Her: Ahi tuna, shaved mini veggies, green goddess dressing Second Course Me: Seared Salmon, lima beans, peas, arugula, Meyer lemon sauce Her: Seared Scallops, wild mushroom, pea pods, coconut cream sauce Third Course Me: Lamb, herb and cheese stuffed mini raviolis, mint olive oil drizzle Her: Rib eye, salt mushrooms, broccolini Fourth Course Me: Cheese, pear mustard, walnut bread, crustini Her: Cheese, honeycomb, walnut bread, crustini Fifth Course Me: Rhubarb crisp, Rhubarb Gelato, foam Her: Honey Almond cake, fresh berries, crème fresh And get this, they are on the Qualcomm Passport card, so we paid $80 for one of us, and $20 for the other :) We also got a half bottle of a white wine to go with the seafood dishes, and that was half price because it was Wednesday :) :) I think they may have a coupon in the Uptown Magazine too. read more

I was shocked when my teenage daughters said that they wanted to go to Nine-Ten. We went last night during Restaurant Week, and it was simply fantastic. The food was superb, but I need to mention how great Thiery was as our server. It's nice to see a professional in action. He was incredibly gracious and patient, and I know that he helped make the experience better for all of us. The Restaurant Week menu is very broad, and it is a great value. The surprise of the night was the tofu entree. My wife, an unabashed carnivore, raved about it all night. This is a special place. You don't just drop in -- but plan a nice night out and you will have a wonderful experience. read more

My wife and I experienced the Mercy of the Chef's Dinner last evening. Our eight course dinner was so creative, full outstanding flavors, fresh and local, and offered great textures that made this a dining experience to treasure. Excellent service and food. We both had the mercy of the chef dishes. There were six courses in all and nearly every course was different for both of us which allowed us to sample even more from the menu. The food was creative and the portions were perfect. Not too small or too much. We thought about ordering a regular meal but the Mercy of the Chef is the way to experience most of what the menu has to offer. Very impressed. Chris was awesome as our waiter and the rest of the staff were top notch. First time here and even though I frequent various levels of culinary delightness this one was well worth the price. We have been here many times before, but decided to enjoy the evening for Valentines this year with another couple. The menu was pre-fixe which always concerns me since I worry that there will not be enough options for all at the table. Well, the menu did not disappoint. Every meal was thoroughly enjoyed. I absolutely love this place. Jason, the chef is fantastic making sure the ingredients and tastes are current. The service has always been first class as well. This place the epitome of a five star restaurant. I have had the pleasure of dining at the nine-ten restaurant twice and each time was amazing. The customer service is outstanding and the food is delicious and exquisitely prepared. It's a little on the pricey side, but you get what you pay for! If you have the means to dine here, I would definitely recommend it! Additionally, if they are still offering the truffle gnocchi appetizer, get it! It's to die for! read more

Outstanding food! Feels like you're at a MasterChef final contest. The perfect mix of textures and flavors. It is clear they know what they are doing in that kitchen. We accidentally came here on a Friday of restaurant week. The reason I give them four stars is because their service is impeccable. We didn't have reservations but they still found a way to squeeze us a table out on the patio. It was definitely cold out there, and we were the only guests there. Yet they still graciously moved heat lamps and shared delightful conversation while serving us these elaborate dishes. The prices are definitely high so prepare yourself. We weren't blown away by our food but we were really glad we got to try the dishes we did. Overall it was a positive experience and I'd recommend at least going once for the experience. read more
