Nine-Ten knocked the ball outta the park on all counts. We went to celebrate our anniversary and had another couple join us. Nothing short of a fantastic experience. Upon seating, we had a card signed by all staff congratulating us on our anniversary. Perfect start to the evening. Our server greeted us... great guy, incredibly friendly. We took the opportunity to order a favorite wine from the extensive wine list. It was great. We all ordered starters and mains, and a few of us went so far as to get the 3-course menu (which added dessert). I had the pork belly (amazingly unctuous and tasty) and prime New Yrk steak (one of the best steaks I've ever had - surprised me too!), and the molten chocolate dessert. SO GOOD... all of it. Wife had the broccoli soup (so fresh and clean) and the chicken roulade (tender and moist with crispy skin... and chicken usually bores me). Before dinner we were given an amuse bouche... very good. After dessert we were given a small passion fruit gelée which was great and intensely flavored. Also at the end of the meal we were brought a complimentary glass of dessert wine. Such a perfect touch to the end of a perfect meal. Nothing but good things to say about Nine-Ten. read more

Looking at the number of reviews I'm now not certain that this place is a hidden gem and that I shouldn't give away how good it is...but I'll go with it anyway. It's in the bottom of a hotel and you walk through the bar to actually get to the dining room. It's a little cramped at first and the attire of the patrons didn't impress me, but I it came recommended by a friend who's views on food I take as gospel. As it was our wedding anniversary we decided that we were going to do something we don't do very often and ordered the tasting menu with the wine pairing. They served us complimentary champagne for our anniversary, which was a nice touch. Each of our plates was different from each others. We made a conscious decision to not eat off each others plates, even though in hindsight it might have been better if we swapped plates on occasion. While I don't remember exactly what was served to us (this was a few months ago) the highlights of the meal for me were the white wines they served and the cheese plate. Very good, and very well paired. Their reds were also very good, but as I usually drink red vice white wine having truly remarkable white wine came as somewhat of a shock. (This review is for our Restaurant Week Experience on 9/17/2012) While perusing a bunch of menus on the SD Restaurant Week website, my heart leapt as I read that one of the options for a first course was ceviche. My husband and I absolutely adore ceviche; that coupled with the rave reviews made me recommend this place to him for our date night. The restaurant has a classy-romantic ambience-- dim lighting with a crisp, clean appearance. Our server, Sarah, was a joy. She served us with a great smile and a wide knowledge of everything on the menu. We started our meal with hamachi sashimi as well as the ceviche. The hamachi seems to be a new addition to their Restaurant Week menu as it's not on the website just yet; it also might be the best hamachi I've ever had. It was so fresh and light with the perfect amount of ponzu and a delicious addition of tiny mushrooms. Delightful! Also, the smoked avocado on that fresh ceviche was to die for. The hubs ordered the duck breast with figs. I can't remember much about it aside from the fact that the skin was beautifully crisped (it's not on the online menu either) because I was so completely enamored by my port wine braised short ribs. It was so moist and tender I could use my spoon to break it apart (which I would've done anyway because I'm Filipina and that's how I roll but still-- it was MELTY tender!) It was also accompanied by this black stuff beautifully drizzled on the plate, which I discovered to be a charred broccoli puree. Oh lordy... I absolutely loved the short ribs and the puree together. It was a party in my mouth. Finally, we settled on the coconut chiboust for dessert. Not gonna lie, I wasn't a huge fan. I like almond chocolate anything. I like caramelized bananas. I like passionfruit sorbet. So it should've been a hit all together, right? I thought so too. The passionfruit sorbet just felt a little overpowering for the plate. Maybe my palate isn't refined enough to appreciate it. Or maybe I was still so hung up over those short ribs that nothing could've even come close to pleasing me after that, no matter what it was. :P Maybe next time we'll try the half-baked chocolate cake that everyone was raving about on yelp. But still, the first two courses being what they were, we left absolutely satisfied. All in all, a homerun of a date night. :) read more

we came here last year for our anniversary, the only reason I docked them a star is because the menus they gave us were apparently old ones and so the dish I had my heart set on I couldn't get =(.... But, we started with the Jamaican jerk pork belly with black eyed peas and i almost fainted! It was like really good foreplay in your mouth!!!! The belly was tender and the black eyed peas were cooked and seasoned PERFECTLY!!! I wanted more! I had the fish, i forget which kind, but it came with an asparagus puree and perfectly cooked asparagus as the beg. It came with less as well but i hate peas so i modified my order. My fish was perfect! And i never enjoyed vegetables so much! The asparagus was tender and seasoned well, the puree complemented the fish perfectly. It was smooth and creamy and light and citrusy. I think my boo had a steak, i cant remember because i was cheating on him with my food! We had some complimentary dessert, i think, i cant remember but everything was good! While we waited for our table we sat at the bar and snacked on their housemade poatato chips: regular, sweet potato, and purple potato or taro. They were good, but nothing to rave about. We liked this place so much we're planning on going back as our last date before i have our first baby!!!! Hopefully we make it because i can pop her out any day....maybe the chef will send us a congratulatory platter of food if we don't get there before she arrives lol! read more

I do kind of like this place. Came here late on a Fri night. Their bottled beer prices are absurdly cheap. Their food was good. I had some hamachi w jalapeno + some lamb meatballs. Would order again. My experience at Nine-Ten was nothing short of spectacular. For starters, the cozy restaurant was tucked in the corner of the large hotel and had a sense of privacy. The servers knew exactly what drinks and wines to recommend, especially with what we ordered. The appetizers are constantly changing and the entrees are as well, so there's always something new to try on the menu. We had the lamb and the New York steak, both of which cooked perfectly with fantastic presentation. The desert menu also changes seasonally except for the staple in the menu, the half baked cake. Service was swift and always accessible if we needed anything and I would most definitely recommend eating at Nine-Ten no matter the occasion. read more

Came here last night to celebrate a 40th birthday. It was an amazing dinner. The cheese plate was amazing the Brie just melts in your mouth. Wine selection was great. The food and drinks were delicious. Although our server was friendly, service was very slow. It took at least 30 minutes to even place a drink order. We were told we could sit in the lobby outside the bar (there were other people ordering food in the same location ) and there seemed to be confusion as to who would be our server. We actually placed an order for appetizers after the drink order and gave our credit card at the same time so we could close out our bill in a timely fashion. Wow! I went with my girlfriend to the 910 3 course meal for two which was a birthday gift. The food was delicious, from the amuse bouche smoked salmon bite, to the pear and macarpone cheese dessert. My girlfriend had hoped for the Halibut which we heard so much about, but instead due to seasonality they served the seabass. The seabas was good, but the most mediocre part of the meal. The scallops and jamican pork belly were absolutely amazing. Would recommend to anyone for a long meal or even just dessert and a drink. We are going back for there special four course Valentine's menu, so excited! read more

We came here for a bachelorette dinner and it started out a little strange. First they had my reservation under Mr. (even though I know I sound like a 12 year old girl on the phone) and then they had my correct gender under a different reservation with a different number of people. Needless to say we were seated promptly in a corner booth, which was comfortable. We all tried the 3 course pre fix dinner menu for $45 and were really please with what we had and the amount of food that was received. Usually at fancy restaurants, I am always still hungry, but not in this situations. The presentation and the servers were really nice. I had to subtract a star because the food was overly salty and although the servers/busers were very nice, they were also pretty MIA during the dinner. Overall a great experience. read more

Went for a date which was a great atmosphere for it We had: Jamaican Jerk Pork Belly Hamachi Sashimi Beef Short Ribs Duck White Chocolate Mousse 910 Signature Half Baked Chocolate Cake with homemade caramel sauce (I would risk death to swim in a pool of it) The staff was so nice and attentive. We were sat at a table that was incredibly breezy and they had no problem moving us. The food was prepared to perfection! They could've used the plates again because we cleaned them! It's more 3.5 stars. Valet is surprisingly only $5 which is worth it since you can easily end up spending that much on gas to try to find a spot (we went Friday evening). Hamachi app is an absolute A MUST have and my wife and I both had as a part of our 3 course $55 option which, BTW, is worth it only if you're going to have the lamb chop or NY steak. NY steak (I had rare and wife had med rare) was significantly UNDER flavored and disappointing (although I gotta admit, it was extremely clean tasting in that it didn't have the liver'ish aftertaste). We wish we could've just ate another plate of the Hamachi app instead, & that alone could've pushed it to 4-5 stars. Side note- for the 3 course meal, they say that portions are the same, but eye comparisons with other tables puts a major question on that. read more

Located inside the Grande Colonial hotel. The broccoli and cheese soup was delicious. It had bread crumbs that were minced, and it had a very crispy texture that paired nicely with the thick soup. The manchego cheese plate was great with the honeycomb. Too bad I was already so stuffed from the main entree. Our waitress was a beautiful blond with a lovely British accent. Best overall breakfast in a snooty breakfast town. All the food there is classy and served distinctively. (Check the crystalline sugar coffee stirrers. Dig em.) It will not kill you for price either. It is a little more than the average fare down the street and around either corner, but the coffee alone will be worth the difference in cost. The thing about bacons that I notice first is whether or not they are skimpy and fatty. (You know the kind: at drunk-food hangouts at 2 AM, the $4.99 breakfast bacon.) In this case, they are thick and rough-hewn, like a butcher cut, and they don't taste all over-smoked and flavorized full of nitrates. It didn't say it was organic, but it wasn't Farmer John's. In any case, a good bacon sets up for belief in good eggs and so on. Lastly, I have never been here when I couldn't find street parking around the corner. And the key to here: you are steps away from the shore to view seals or shopping, your choice. read more

My Husband and I went here for restaurant week and it was amazing! Yes it is expensive, but for a good reason. The food is fabulous, and the staff is helpful and very nice. There was a lot of really great options on the menu, but I went with the Halibut. I am not a huge fish person and was nervous it might be fishy. It was perfect! It was perfectly seasoned and didn't taste fishy at all. I have been wanting to go back just for the Halibut! sooo good! My husband had the pork tenderloin and loved it. It was cooked perfectly and tasted great. I highly recommend this restaurant. If you are from San Diego you know there are a lot of mediocre restaurants out there and very few great ones. Very nice place in downtown La Jolla. Valet was great as parking can be a problem. While the servings were small and expensive, the taste was superb. If you are very hungry then go somewhere else, if you are looking for a great tasting meal experience, then go to Nine-Ten. We had the short ribs and cod. The short ribs were excellent. Cod was a bit too oily for my taste, however that is the nature of cod so not unexpected. Great wine selection, but keep in mind you can spend as much for a few glasses of wine as you spend for the food, we did. They close at 10pm on Saturday night, so you want to have reservations for no later than 8:15pm. I would recommend it to a friend, but I will try other venues first. read more

One of my all time favorites. Happy hour, lunch, and dinner there are all what I consider A Very Good Time. I'm particularly fond of every fish or salad I've ever gotten there. We've had beautiful risottos, pastas, steaks - all really wonderful. The only disappointment I can remember ever having at Nine-Ten was when the panna cotta I craved wasn't available. Nine-Ten: You gave me the best meal that I have had in a long time. We came here for our anniversary dinner tonight. We were thinking of George's since we go there frequently and decided last minute to go here instead. It was a Monday night so not very busy. First, the service. They even gave an anniversary card and complimentary drinks for both of us. Our food server was Summer and she made the dining experience superb. There was another wait staff who brought out our food. He was excellent and explained what each food item was. So now the food--We were so impressed with the innovative sauces on our appetizer tortellini special with the myer lemon sauce. Then the carrot soup--the complexity blew me away! For the main course, I had the halibut since I don't eat red meat and it was the best halibut I have ever had with its flavorful crusted outside and perfectly moist inside. My husband had the mushrooms for the main entree and I have never had a more delicious vegetarian meal. And the dessert--white chocolate with passion fruit sorbet. I didn't know if the meal could get better but it did with our last course! For a foodie, this is the place go go! Highly recommend it! read more

This is one of my most favorite restaurants in San Diego. At my most recent visit, I enjoyed the peach salad for an appetizer, king salmon dish for my entree, and compressed melon for my dissent. I enjoyed all three items that I ordered. The king salmon was cooked medium-rare, and I especially liked the eggplant puree that came with it. Also, the dessert was a surprise. I ordered it because it sounded interesting (it is vacuum-cooked). It was a light and refreshing dessert... so if you are looking for something rich and decadent, this may not be for you. I also had a bite of the tuna tartare that my partner ordered, and I loved it. I wish if there was more room in between the tables, but they typically do a pretty good job seating people with empty tables in between. Presentation: 10. All three courses looked amazing. I had the sea bass ceviche, my strip, and the panacotta wih chocolate ice cream. Taste: 8. The ceviche was good. The ny strip was a tad over medium rare but the sauce was really good. There was too much panna cotta, but the ice cream was great along with the chocolate crumbles. Service: 8. I love this place. It is my favorite for an anniversary dinner with my wife. We always eat whatever the chef tells us to. Several courses with wine pairings and a desert or two. I always get someting I have never had before and I always love it. It is easy to spend 3 or even 4 hundred, so be prepared, but for a rare ocassion it is awesome. read more

Dined here yesterday after hearing great things. Well, can't say it was a great experience. They served me the wrong dish. I ordered the lamb shank, but somehow I ended with a vegetarian disk. They were nice enough to give me fries while I waited an additional 20 minutes for my meal. Everyone at my table pretty much finished their meals and mine hasn't come. Finally just told the server to take it to go. To top it off, the server charged me the 20% gratuity when their policy states 6 or more people. I enjoyed some of the dishes. But the service was terrible. If it wasn't for my clients. I would have taken it to management. read more
